    Book Description

As Ells guides you through an honest look at the family you grew up in, he examines the ways family members relate to one another and how those patterns affect generation after generation. Ells draws from his own family experiences and the experiences of families he has counseled to demonstrate how parents who are too attached or who are not attached enough shape their children's needs and expectations--and their future relationships with spouses and children.

                  Book Description

Charles Stevens, a prominent neurobiologist who originally trained as a biophysicist (with George Uhlenbeck and Mark Kac), wrote this book almost by accident. Each summer he found himself reviewing key areas of physics that he had once known and understood well, for use in his present biological research. Since there was no book, he created his own set of notes, which formed the basis for this brief, clear, and self-contained summary of the basic theoretical structures of classical mechanics, electricity and magnetism, quantum mechanics, statistical physics, special relativity, and quantum field theory.

The Six Core Theories of Modern Physics can be used by advanced undergraduates or beginning graduate students as a supplement to the standard texts or for an uncluttered, succinct review of the key areas. Professionals in such quantitative sciences as chemistry, engineering, computer science, applied mathematics, and biophysics who need to brush up on the essentials of a particular area will find most of the required background material, including the mathematics.

2 out of 5 stars Sloppy if not downright wrong.......2006-01-23

I bought this for half price from a used bookstore (they had several copies) so I should've been warned. Within a few pages of starting this book, in a section of vector algebra, the author states that all vectors in an orthonormal basis are eigenvectors of all unitary operators. That's a ludicrous statement that is trivially wrong. Being a bit afraid that I might be led astray when reading sections on material I didn't already know, I checked the web for other mentions of this book. The only website I found (besides the publishers) was one hosting a lengthy errata for the book, full of corrections to sloppy mistakes in this book. Warning number two. Here it is (you'll need it):

                  w3.pppl.gov/~hammett/talks/ 2001/core-theories-errata.pdf

I think the idea behind this book is great, and I haven't found anything yet as aggregious as the mistatement about unitary transforms. But beware. This isn't a book by a physicist, and it shows.

5 out of 5 stars Great companion for learning QFT........2003-06-11

I am self-studying QFT and have bought several of the standard textbooks -- they are all tough going.

Stevens's book helped me greatly in understanding the path-integral approach: the section on functional calculus was very well presented, then applied in the two chapters on quantum mechanics (QM) and quantum field theory (QFT). I especially liked the connection made with classical probability theory, something I haven't seen in my QFT books.

You will not learn QM from this book. In fact, with a QM-101 background, you may find the QM chapter hard to follow. However, if you have started to learn QFT, it should add value.

The other chapters were of less interest to me personally, but I thought they nicely reviewed their topics from a fresh viewpoint, in particular special relativity and thermodynamics.

3 out of 5 stars Six Core or "hard" Core?.......2001-04-21

While it's pleasant having an overview of physics in one place I am unhappy with the lack of care in writing the text. For example, the section on functional calculus frequently changes notation during an explanation. Also, much more emphasis should have been placed on the fact that the differentiation of functionals produces functional DENSITY derivatives. However, with some effort, I DID succeed in understanding this section. Needs greater clarity of presentation, perhaps with more diagrams.

5 out of 5 stars great pocket book of physics.......1999-11-07

This is a concise and elegant summary of the fundamentals of the six core theories of physics. It even includes a convenient math review. Although the author might have the "beginning graduate student" in mind, now at the end of my Ph.D. training in applied physics at Harvard, I still had a great time reading it!.

                      Book Description

Strom: Mercury How did Mercury get such an enormous iron core? Why is its tectonic framework so different from any other planet or satellite? What is its crystal composition? Why is the crust so depleted in iron when the interior is so rich in that element? What are the polar deposits? Where do the elements in the exosphere come from? Mercury is a planet shrouded in mystery. Only 45 percent of its surface has been seen in any detail, and that was from the Mariner 10 flyby in 1974. Yet what is known only makes the planet more fascinating. New Earth-based observations have shed light on surface and exosphere compositions, and re-evaluations of the Mariner 10 data, using modern image processing techniques, show evidence for volcanic flow fronts, pyroclastics and other volcanic phenomena not seen before. This ground-breaking book not only chronicles what has been discovered, but looks ahead to what has yet to emerge. An accompanying CD contains all the best Mariner 10 images, including the data for each image, photomosaics and maps.

Introduction to the Physics of the Earth's Interior describes the structure, composition and temperature of the deep Earth in one comprehensive volume. The book begins with a succinct review of the fundamentals of continuum mechanics and thermodynamics of solids, and presents the theory of lattice vibration in solids. It introduces the various equations of state, moving on to a discussion of melting laws and transport properties. The book closes with a discussion of current seismological, thermal and compositional models of the Earth. The new edition of this successful textbook has been enlarged and fully updated, taking into account the considerable experimental and theoretical progress recently made in understanding the inner structure of the Earth. Like the first edition, this will be a useful textbook for graduate and advanced undergraduate students in geophysics and mineralogy. It will also be of great value to researchers in earth sciences, physics and materials sciences.

                                Book Description

Surface Science is understood as a relatively young scientific discipline, concerned with the physical and chemical properties of phenomena on clean and covered solid surfaces, studied under a variety of conditions. The adsorption of atoms and molecules on solid surfaces is, for example, such a condition, connected with more or less drastic changes of all surface properties. An adsorption event is frequently observed in nature and found to be of technical importance in many industrial processes. For this reason, Surface Science is interdisciplinary by its very nature, and as such an important intermediary between fundamental and applied research.

                                    Book Description

In 1941, Mary Matsuda Gruenewald was a teenage girl who, like other Americans, reacted with horror to the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Yet soon she and her family were among 110,000 innocent people imprisoned by the U.S. government because of their Japanese ancestry. In this eloquent memoir, she describes both the day-to-day and the dramatic turning points of this profound injustice: what is was like to face an indefinite sentence in crowded, primitive camps; the struggle for survival and dignity; and the strength gained from learning what she was capable of and could do to sustain her family. It is at once a coming-of-age story with interest for young readers, an engaging narrative on a topic still not widely known, and a timely warning for the present era of terrorism. Complete with period photos, the book also brings readers up to the present, including the author's celebration of the National Japanese American Memorial dedication in 2000.

I loved this book. As a Sansei, 3rd generation Japanese in America, I learned so much from reading this book. Both of my parents were interned during the war, but in all these years, they've only shared bits and pieces or vague generalities of their own experiences. Reading Mary Matsuda's vivid and detailed account of her own experience gave me a much greater appreciation and understanding of this traumatic, stressful period, along with a better understanding of basic Japanese customs and beliefs that have guided my own life. It has been a powerful step towards better understanding my own family's history, and I so appreciate that this story was shared by the author. It was beautifully written. I highly recommend this book to all.

A must. Extremely readable. Should be required reading for Junior or High School students. Evokes a sense of what it felt like to be Japanese during that infamous time.

My family was also sent to internment camps, actually some of the same ones as this author. We came from the same beloved Vashon. Being a child of a parental figure who came from that era and having had aunts and uncles, grandparents and great grandparents who had lived that experience but never spoken of it, this book has opened my eyes and helped me understand the severity of it all. I can understand now the turmoil emotionally and physically that they under went. I cried with this author. For even today, in this wide spread nation, I can still see the ripples of underlying current made from this time period and the choices made by our leaders. This is a wonderful book. You'll learn something, and if you don't, you should ask yourself some hard questions.

5 out of 5 stars Strongly recommended to all Americans.......2007-01-28

Even if one is aware of the internment of the American Japanese, I doubt that most people can form any real idea of what it was like without reading a personal chronicle like this. It is difficult to express how painful it is to read, and I already knew the basic story. Sure, now we know that it didn't turn into a second Holocaust, but the people in the camps didn't have that comforting foreknowledge. One needs to be reminded that although the intense portions of a tragedy may be long over with, the ramifications for the people who suffered through it can last all their lives, even for those who didn't lose everything that they had owned before the catastrophe.

Jeanne Wakatusi Houston also wrote a classic memoir: Farewell to Manzanar, and it is well worth reading both of the books for the similarities and differences between the two experience. Houston was perhaps 8 or 10 years younger than Mary Matsuda, and her family dynamics were quite different, so they really complement one another. Being older, Mary Matsuda had to confront personally and directly issues that Jeanne Wakatusi Houston didn't, although of course her family members did. JWH tells us more about her life after the camps; MMG ends her books in 1945, with only an afterword summarizing the later lives of the Matsudas.

I found the book very vivid. I could easily imagine how I would feel having to destroy so much family history, even being afraid to keep a set of dolls lest it add fuel to the anti-Japanese fervor. And I feel that I have some inkling of what it was like to live for years under constant strain, not knowing what would come next, or if it would ever end. I was close to crying at points, which is unusual for me. The Matsudas lived on Vashon Island in the Puget Sound, which should make the book all the more interesting to fans of Guterson's Snow Falling on Cedars.

The book includes a bibliography, a glossary and numerous black-and-white photographs of the Matsudas and the camps.

One of the key events of the "Forgotten War" in the Aleutians was the Japanese attack on Dutch Harbor; the first combat on U.S. soil since the Civil War. So threatening was it considered that it was kept secret from the American public lest it cause panic on the West Coast.
Rourke examines the attack and its significance with maps, charts, photos, documents, and memoirs by participants on both sides, giving a clear picture of all aspects of the battle, its planning and aftermath. The reader who wants more information about the ground forces, however, may wish to consult "The Williwaw War", by Goldstein and Dillon, (University of Arkansas Press), which details the experiences of Arkansas National Guard and other soldiers present.

Not long ago, neighborhoods such as the South Bronx, South Central Los Angeles, and Boston's Roxbury were crime-ridden wastelands of vacant lots and burned-out buildings, notorious symbols of urban decay. In House by House, Block by Block, Alexander von Hoffman tells the remarkable stories of how local activists and community groups helped turn these areas around. For sixty years, federal policy has attempted with little success to solve the problems of housing and poverty in America's inner cities. Yet increasingly, local organizations are picking up where Washington has left off. In a series of dramatic and colorful narratives, von Hoffman shows how these groups are revitalizing once desperate neighborhoods in five major cities: New York, Boston, Chicago, Atlanta, and Los Angeles. The unlikely heroes include: the tough-talking Bronx priest who made apartment buildings for low-income people glisten in the midst of ruins and despair; the "crazy white man" who scrambled to save Chicago's historic Black Metropolis from the wrecking ball; the Boston cops who built a task force that put the brakes on youth gangs. Thanks to locally-based, bootstrap efforts like these, in inner-city neighborhoods across the country, crime rates are falling, real estate values are rising, and businesses are returning. Von Hoffman also shows that grass-roots work can't do it alone: successful revitalization needs the support of local government and access to business and foundation capital. Based on years of research and more than a hundred interviews, this book is the first systematic account of the dramatic urban revival now going on in the United States. House by House, Block by Block will be a must-read for anyone who cares about the fate of America's cities.

4 out of 5 stars Review of House by House, Block by Block.......2007-01-06

House by House, Block by Block tells the stories of how urban neighborhood revitalization happened in five cities across America. Alexander Von Hoffman, an historian and specialist in housing and urban affairs and senior research fellow at Harvard's Joint Center for Housing Studies, takes his readers on a journey across America from east to west and describes how neighborhoods fall into decline as well as how they rise back up from the ashes of blight and devastation. The histories of neighborhoods in New York, Boston, Chicago, Atlanta, and Los Angeles are revealed through a series of case studies about specific neighborhoods in those cities. The case studies were developed from personal interviews, census data, private publications, and newspaper articles. Each chapter dissects the rebirth of neighborhoods beginning with the causes of decline, identifying and describing the people who facilitated the transformations, how the revitalization began on the street, and ends with a summary of lessons learned from that particular case. Overall, the book takes a comprehensive look at how change happens and who makes it happen. This book should be read by everyone interested in a step by step outline of how neighborhoods change and how neighborhood change leads to the revitalization of entire cities.

House by House, Block by Block provides a kind of "organizational chart" of how neighborhoods change in different circumstances. Each case study is centered on the people in the neighborhoods who make and are affected by revitalization. Von Hoffman's use of storytelling entices readers, pulls them into the situation, and personalizes each cast study. The author discusses politics in a realistic and candid manner and does not hold back criticisms or compliments of politicians or public policies. He also recognizes that neighborhoods decline for a myriad of reasons, and that there is no prescription for neighborhood revitalization. That said, von Hoffman asserts that neighborhood turn-arounds require support from citizens, non-profits, politicians, and corporations, but these organizations join together in very different ways depending on the time and place that change occurs. There are few weaknesses in the book, but at times, the litany of acronyms and last names can be confusing to the casual reader. While the use of acronyms makes certain sections difficult to read, the book is generally easy to read and friendly to the lay-person.

Chapter Four begins with the story of Earnest Gates, a successful black man on the brink of moving out of a bad neighborhood and into a luxury apartment in a wealthy neighborhood. Gates decides to take the money he would have spent on a fancy new apartment and renovate a home and begin to revitalize his old neighborhood. Not only does this story exemplify one way neighborhoods start to change, but it typifies von Hoffman's ability to intrigue readers with a touching story. Storytelling is one way to draw in a reader and keep them interested on a personal level, and it conveys information in a way that is accessible to a wide variety of readers.

House by House, Block by Block is an important book for planners because it details neighborhood revitalization from the beginning of the decline and includes sociological, political, economic, and locational reasons for change. The author openly discusses the racial tensions that exist in American cities and their effect on the decline of communities. He also points his finger at inept politicians, planners, and police and blames them when they are at fault for problems in their cities. The holistic approach to analyzing how neighborhoods evolve brings to light that true neighborhood revitalization requires more than simply building new housing; it requires cooperation, trust and a group of determined people and organizations with a vision for a better community.

This book supplements existing planning literature about city revitalization very well because it details events happening outside of downtowns at close range. Many planning texts and articles focus on development and revivals in downtowns and neglect the importance of the inner city neighborhood surrounding those downtowns. Von Hoffman focuses strictly on neighborhoods and fills a gap in the existing literature. He highlights the significance of neighborhoods, their inner life and soul, and the importance of the people who live in them.

The relevance of the books lies in the descriptions of how social change happens. Agents of social change range from members of the clergy to community members to landlords to politicians to urban planners. The change happens in different ways and on different levels in each case, but the outcome is always a similar - a healthier neighborhood. Studying social changes in this detailed manner reminds readers that there are no usual subjects for agents of change. Reminding people that change can happen anywhere and begin with anyone also inspires people to be revolutionaries in their own neighborhoods.

                                          Book Description

Yosemite is a world-famous destination that has attracted celebrated photographers such as Eadweard Muybridge, Edward Weston, and Ansel Adams, along with environmental organizations, rock climbers, and tourists. Yosemite in Time puts this park in a new light with re-photographs of some of the most enduring images taken at Yosemite, and three essays by noted cultural critic Rebecca Solnit. The photographs and essays reconsider the iconic status of Yosemite in America's conception of wilderness, examining how the place was appropriated by its early Euro-American visitors and showing how our conceptions of landscape have altered and how land has changed — or not — over time. Arresting and incisive, Yosemite in Time is an intimate reconsideration of a park that millions of people hold dear.

Having read many books on Yosemite, I always find a new take on the material to be refreshing. And while there are other books which use rephotography (taking a new photo in the exact same location as an old photo), the photos in this book are nonetheless spectacular. There are several tri-fold pullouts which are pieced together panoramic views incorporating both new and old photos. The book isn't all photos, as there are quite a few pages of text, telling the story of how the book came to be and about the history of yosemite's photographers.

4 out of 5 stars Yosemite Native Americans - History is always RE-written by those who won the war...and those who helped........2006-07-19

I liked the idea of re-doing Eadweard Muybridge photos. I was amazed at how the photos were re-done. To see how they looked years later was very interesting. Sadly, History is always written by those who won the war...or those who helped with that war. In the book it states that the Miwoks were the original Native Americans of Yosemite Valley. That is really not correct. The Miwoks were the ones who were the guides and helpers of James Savage. Chief Bautista of the Miwoks and James Savage were actaully allies. Other groups that later became Miwoks helped James Savage scout out the Yosemites and guide them to the hidden camps of the Yosemites, who were in fact Mono Paiutes.

That is a sad chapter of the TRUE history of Yosemite. That now the Miwoks are claiming to be the original Indians of Yosemite when they were the ones who assisted James Savage and the Mariposa Battalion.

That is the truth and you can read that in Lafayette H. Bunnell's book "Discovery of the Yosemites". Bunnell was the only man to meet Chief Tenaya.
