This book is clearly intended for the home schooling market, which is part of why this book is so dangerous. Dangerous, I say, because it represents the worse kind of old-fashioned teaching, which equates the knowledge of labels, categories, and descriptions with education.

For example, it lists the basic types of clouds (stratus, cumulus, and cirrus), but gives only the briefest discussion of the water cycle, or weather patterns, or meteorology and weather prediction, etc. In other words, your child would be taught *what* things are called, but may never understand the proces or mechanisms involved. The study of history is similar, if not worse -- consisting mostly of names and dates, presents a naively heroic and linear progression of events, and focuses entirely on American history. Your child may know what Paul Revere was famous for, but will have little understanding of the historical processes which were at play in the American revolution. For the author, it is sufficient that the child learn that "the colonies had a dream to be free!" I think even a 5th grader deserves a better explanation than that (worse, if an adult believes it, too).

The title itself is misleading, since there is very little on "how" to teach; it mostly tells about "things to know." The section on critical reasoning and thinking is particularly disappointing, devoting about one paragraph to "evaluation," which is the single most important step. Not suprisingly, a lot more pages are devoted to "describing," "classifying," "summarizing," etc. It's as if this book is stuck in the Middle Ages, trying to rediscover Aristotle's natural philosophy.

In my opinion, this book could serve well only as a basic primer for a parent whose own schooling was rather lacking. But if that is the case, the parent is probably a lot better off entrusting the education of his/her children to someone with some knowledge and professional expertise.

As a final comment, I should note that this book takes the effort to point out that humans are the "highest" form of animal, and are primates only because humans have "flexible hands and feet." Not only is this wrong, it also stinks of a religious agenda.

2 out of 5 stars A fair start, but I probably won't use it to teach my son........1999-08-30

I too found the constant references to the Gulf War tiresome. I also found some factual errors (koalas are not bears) and a few words that were spelled wrong. I will use the book as a reference, but will find other books to use, also.

2 out of 5 stars some good tips.......1999-03-15

Just finished scanning this book. As a home schooler, it seems to have a very good list of phonics facts. I did find however the continuous references to war and violence when the author was illustrating a point-a bit - no, very tiresome. Perhaps the gulf war was of special interest to the author or perhaps it was a conscious effort to make the book appear timely. In my humble opinion it was just plain annoying.

As a Canadian, I found bits and pieces of useful information. I will NOT use this book as my only resource - but will keep it for reference.

3 out of 5 stars Love true war stories.......2006-03-11

I love true war stories. This one doesn't flow real smooth though. Very "Diary" like and not a real mix of characters and activities. Much more direct or clinical but I did enjoy the stories.

5 out of 5 stars Revealing About the Untold War in China.......2003-08-10

"Sharks Over China" is a great book for any historian or anyone who likes war stories. This book details the true account of the fight in China in WWII after the Flying Tigers disbanded. You hear about Europe and the Pacific quite often, but few TV shows or books bring up the fight in China. It is an interesting scenario as US and Chinese forces tried to put the vice on Japan as the Allies were taking back the Pacific. If any historian ever wondered what happened to the AVG and the fight in China, this book answers them. The US finally took control and expanded Chennault's tools. Unfortunately you find out that the campaign still didn't receive everything it needed to defeat the Japanese. I urge anyone to buy this book, you'll enjoy it. "God Is My Copilot" is good to read about thte AVG, and this book will pick up where Col. Robert L. Scott left off.

5 out of 5 stars Strap yourself in and fly away!.......2001-03-06

I always wanted to be a fighter pilot. When I was young I read "God Is My Co-Pilot" and imagined myself in China with the Flying Tigers (AVG). That book ends with the author (Robert L. Scott) still in China, and I always wondered what happened afterward.

Carl Molesworth's book does just that. Utilizing information gathered from diaries, interviews, and official war records, he presents a detailed and personal history of the 23rd Fighter Group, from it's creation after the dissolution of the famous AVG, to the end of World War II.

The book is very detailed, presenting a seeming blow-by-blow account of the air war in China as the 23rd Fighter Group fought it. There are stories of the various missions they flew, the hardships they endured, and the amazing feats they performed as one of the most undersupplied units of the war. At the same time the book is very personal, with many anecdotes and stories. There are quite a few photos of the pilots and their planes as well, a major plus.

The text is well written, flows smoothly, and keeps the reader's interest from start to finish. While reading it was very easy to imagine that I was in China with them, behind the stick of my very own P-40. This is a book that any lover of war or aviation stories will enjoy.

I bought this book for my Western Civilization class and I was very happy with it. The authors did a great job. Particularly pleasing was the way the book before each chapter had the timeline for all the events covered in that specific chapter. This helped one get a better grip on what happened first and what came after that. I would recommend this book.

For anyone interested in Western Civilization and European History.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely outstanding...if you have the time for it.......2007-07-27

This was by far the most interesting history book that I have ever read. It is a brilliant amalgamation of facts, interesting analysis, maps, and historical documents that constantly touches on recurring themes throughout European History. I read it for the AP Euro class I took last year and, truthfully, it is the only thing you need to succeed on the essays of the AP test. However, all of the chapters are at least 30 pages long, with much material to comprehend and note-taking is necessary to remember much relevant information. If you have the time to put in to it, though, you will not regret slaving over this textbook.

        1 out of 5 stars Poorly edited.......2004-07-29

This textbook is filled with misinformation, typos, and blatant grammatical errors. I hope professors stop requesting that students read this text. The only thing worse than the book is the compainion website. It has practice test questions that contradict the "real" test and quiz questions that they provide. If you take this course DL like I did, this really makes a big difference. I have spent the better half of the semester arguing for points from my professor (and winning) who apparently never bothered to read the tests or the text (I should get paid from him!!)
One example, on a practice test, when you type in the name Pompey, a correct answer, it tells you that you are wrong because it is Pomey (there is no such Roman General)
When you contact the publisher's website administrator, they tell you that you need to talk to your professor to get anything changed. That was two months ago, he nor they have done anything about it. I am not exagerating when I say that is one of at least 25 examples that I have noticed.

Also, there is a lot of inconsistency in the writing styles of chapters. There is an overemphasis of women. Now, I am a women and I agree that we have been left out of history for way too long. This book has a section per chapter just reminding you how bad we had it throughout history. Chapter after chapter in the ancient and middle ages sections at least, women's lots did not change a lot. I think they could have just updated us when major advancements were made.

4 out of 5 stars Great for AP Euro!.......2003-11-08

I took AP Euro as a junior last year and actually really enjoyed this text. It was a lot better than the other book that had been used the previous year which was comprised almost completely of political history. The pictures are nice when you have a big chapter to read and the writing is simple to comprehend. The pitfalls of the book lie in the chapter on the French Revolution and it is obvioius that toward the end the deadline was coming up because numerous spelling errors and other typos were found throughout the final chapters. The formation of the E. U. and its development were almost not at all covered, but much of the material is excellent. In preparation for the AP test my class did not do very much in terms of information, but spent most of its time doing DBQ's and essays. I read the entire book cover to cover and did not even have to study for the AP test and recieved a five, so I highly reccomend this book but look somewhere else for the French Revolution or if you really want things structured in a strictly chronological formation.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Overview of European History.......2003-04-15

I am a junior in an AP European History class. My class uses two textbooks, one of which is Kagan's Western Heritage. The Kagan textbook is by far my favorite of the two textbooks to read. It is very interesting and thoroughly covers all the topics of European history, many of which are skipped in my other textbook. I am even considering buying the book so I can read the chapters my class skipped and keep it on hand as a reference. The order of the chapters is not at all difficult to follow as long as the reader has a basic knowledge of European History or looks at the timelines at the beginning of each section. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Europe.

        2 out of 5 stars Too complicated........2002-09-27

I am a freshman in high school, and this is my textbook in my AP European History class.

The events depicted are often out of order, making it harder to understand the timeline. The writing seems inconsistent, sometimes short and understandable but often is long-winded and unclear. The authors of this book assume you have some knowledge of both of the geography in Europe and at least some knowledge of Europe's history already. In most of my fellow students' case, they assume wrong. If you do not already have some experience in studying Europe, then I would recommend searching for a different book.

              Book Description

It is received wisdom for today's politicians and scientists that the only way to produce enough food for a growing global population is to clear and claim more land for agriculture, to specialize in certain high-yield crops, and to utilize every chemical and technological aid, including genetic engineering, to promote growth. This is also highly profitable for the multinational companies who produce the fertilizers, seeds, pesticides, herbicides, and GMOs for agribusiness. For Vandana Shiva, this is a recipe for disaster. A world in which nature's own abundance--the infinite variety of species, or "biodiversity"--is allowed full range is the only world that can offer either hope or safety. Over-dependence on a limited number of crops is unwise. Genetic engineering may bring with it hazards impossible to predict and impossible to reverse. Among the most obvious of the sad consequences of biotechnology in the West is the threat to so many songbird species, but there are other less apparent dangers in depleting the diversity of the gene pool, most important the loss of genetic material to help sustain the complex environmental balance of our planet.

5 out of 5 stars Siva opens eyes.......2001-12-10

Vandana Shiva started out as a physicist, is now a crusader for biodiversity. She has a terrific clear and direct style.
This short book tipped me over the edge, to an anti -GMO [geneticaly modied organisms] position. In the long-term GMO's may do wonders, but in the short term they are instruments in the hands of Global Capital, used to steal from the people. VS has a very important take on "yield" - the appropriated bottom lands "yield" less food and fibre, but they do yield profits for the corporations - this a is truly radical concept. Her stories of hundreds of farmer suicides in the wake of modern monoculture introduction are chilling, as are the dangers we are piling up by relying on vast areas of identically vulnerable crops.
Read this book and be changed.
              Beyond the book:
A recent story suggests cause for hope. In Honduras, farmers on the slopes use grass berms on the contours and legumes to improve the soil. Their production is more valuable than that of the valley flats. The hill farming takes labour, so Capital cant take it over. This looks like the way ahead for the majority of the world, deserted by Capital. A key to the method is use of the correct varieties - winged beans the most prominent, but different altitudes benefit from different legumes. Information on varieties is crucial. Reports from Africa also suggest that legumes plus controlled animal grazing and fodder collection are making successful small farms . A truck to market can put the farm into the cash economy.

              Book Description

The Go-Getter is Kyne's most famous work, first published by William Randolph Hearst in 1921. The story centers around disabled World War I veteran Bill Peck, a worker who must overcome many obstacles in order to build a successful life for himself. At every turn he is thwarted by life's circumstances and must rely on his own tenacity and wits to see him through. American novelist PETER B. KYNE (1880-1957) was born in San Francisco, California. From early on it was clear that he had a gift for writing, and his time in the army during the Spanish-American War and World War I gave him plenty to write about. Kyne's novels include The Three Godfathers (1913) and Cappy Ricks (1916).

It can be used in almost any setting to encourage the reader to accomplish what seems impossible to accomplish. I first heard the story 35 years ago and have told it at least one hundred times. I finally found the original source and purchased it. After reading it, I have already loaned it to others and encouraged them to buy and mark their own copy. It's a great book for business, for school officials, and just about any setting! Buy it and read it!

Easy to read, easy to comprehend, excellent story approach. Try it, you're sure to be delighted.

4 out of 5 stars Good quick read.......2007-07-02

Short book that has a good moral. The writing style is very dated, and may be a turn off to some (it almost was for me).

You can read the whole book in under an hour, and will definitely find a way to apply it immediately.

4 out of 5 stars Old is Gold.......2006-11-22

Reading a book on leadership written about 80 years ago is an experience. While we all know that new advancements will lead to a need for new skills. This was true for all periods. The best part of The Go-Getter is its relevance for all ages.

When I was reading the book for the first time without even referring to the period when it was written I felt that the author has used the lumber industry to indicate a generic pattern across industries. I felt its clear relevance in the software industry which is still in its adolescence globally.

Go getter attitude will take us to reach any of our goals. This requires three important aspects - the ownership of the activity or problem, courage to handle it even without having the complete knowledge of the activity or the problem but have only broad guidelines and perseverance to withstand the hurdles come on the way in completing the tougher task on hand. The Go-Getter demonstrates the same very well. The blue vase test has opened some powerful insights in me and I should agree my thinking and attitude towards any activity I am looking at had been changed dramatically after reading this book.

This book gives us great insights about making our own fortunes. There is a saying that the normal worker waits for the job description and the Go getter writes one and exceeds the same. This book offers motivation to look at opening doors(opportunities), finding ways to make way, take ownership, show perseverance, think laterally to find maximum alternatives on hand, respecting the designer/assigner of the job and his instincts and finally the strongest of the messages - It will be done attitude.

A must read for the younger generation to learn how to find their way in the new executive jungle. Considering the economic growth majority of the economies are experiencing the managers are always flooded with priorities between managing growth vs creating supporting structures for planning further growth. The amount of time new age managers/leaders are spending on grooming and counseling the subjects has drastically come down and it is important that the subjects learn some life skills to sail through the tough waters. The Go Getter definitely offers the required life skill - being a Go Getter.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Refference.......2004-05-10

I found this book to be the best refference I've come across regarding Luftwaffe aircraft. Very well researched with good photographs, provided appropriate detail and attention to each aircraft. One might be surprised that the Luftwaffe even possessed helicopters, along with some highly advanced rocket and jet aircraft. For example, there was even a prototype for a jet-powered flying wing, very similar to our B-2 stealth bomber! Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Black crossed planes, star crossed designs.......2001-01-10

I'm no expert but I am familiar with most of the Luftwaffe planes and I can't seem to think of one that's not represented here. Represented is rather a weak term for what this book provides. 250 pages, most of them with at least two or three illustrations of the various types. Photographs, a few of them in color, color drawings including quite a few 'three views' (front-on, top down and profile) of the more important types. There are also about two dozen 'cut-away' diagrams showing the structural and internal components of the planes.

That's just the visual treats the book provides. The written descriptions give the required information - powerplant, dimensions, performance, armament, etc. Where there were prototypes, modifications and variants, details are also given. Of interest to me, and highlighted by the book, is the fact that much of the history of the Luftwaffe is also a story about designs and designers. Experimental designs were almost a rule rather than the exception. The great designers like Willy Messerschmitt, Ernest Heinkel and Claudius Dornier live on through their wonderful planes, even the great 'what might have beens' (Me 262, He 162, Arado 'Blitz' and my personal favorite, the revolutionary Do 335). All are beautifully depicted for us here.

5 out of 5 stars Clearly a book made with love...........2000-09-05

... for aviation. The book is really beautifull. It is precise in it's descriptions, although not in-depth for all presented models. The aircraft described in the book all have reached the flying status, so experimentals built but not flown didn't make it in. You might miss some aircraft, I'm not an expert (yet), but it looks very complete. On the down side: The extensive use of pictures (some wartime color pictures too!) sometimes forces the accompanying descriptive texts to be placed in a chaotic manner. I Just can't get past those first pages, so much do I enjoy them. Yes, truly a work right from the heart...

4 out of 5 stars An excellent reference source.......1998-02-07

For those looking for an indepth reference oriented book relating to the Luftwaffe of WWII, this is the book for you. The author provides a very thorough look into a wide array of aircraft (a/c), giving both a developmental history as well as a fairly indepth look at what specifically changed from variant to variant. The information provided is very detailed and well laid out. You will find various color drawings interlaced with actual photos. As well, many types include a detailed "transparent" which details the components of the a/c. The author has also included a very handy quick reference feature in the form of a chart which provides a snapshot of important characteristics of specific types. As an example, the chart for the Fw 190 includes a snapshot of some 50+ variants from the Fw 190 V1 to the Ta 153. In describing a given a/c, the author does a very good job of giving a well rounded view of the plane; what was good about it, and what wasn't. You won't find, however, pilot accounts or actual combat recollections. The book is very much reference oriented. Overall, an excellent addition to ones collection. Trevor Myler

5 out of 5 stars Single Volume Encyclopaedia of German warplanes in WW-2.......1996-06-23

Pros: Very complete, includes all the front-line types plus some of the most interesting experimental planes. Interesting text, planes arranged in alphabetical order. Most pictures in black and white, but it has many color side-drawings for camouflage illustration. Many cutaway and double-page illustrations.

Cons: Would have liked it more if it had included all the second-line types as well.

                                      Book Description

In 1994, the INS launched Operation Gatekeeper, the Clinton administration's drastic effort to regain control of the U.S.-Mexico border. However, even as miles of new fence and hundreds of trained agents were added, the border was enjoying unprecedented economic growth. As Joseph Nevins details in this book, the effort has failed to significantly reduce unauthorized immigration, but has undoubtedly contributed to the hardship, and sometimes death, for many unauthorized border crossers. With a journalist's eye for detail, Nevins provides an immensely readable account of what has become an increasingly central concern for developed nations: keeping third world immigrants out.

                                      5 out of 5 stars I Liked .......2006-12-13

This book so much helped me understand the ironical and paradoxical situation of operation gatekeeper in such globalized, and multi cultural country like the U.S. This book offers the readers various ways such as historical, political, social and cultural perspectives to look at and think about the truth of relationship between Mexican immigrants and U.S. government and the factual background in which the operation gatekeeper has been generated. And it also lets you understand how this policy influenced the whole world in terms of globalization or internationalization and also the geographical and economic aspects. I'd recommend this book because Nevin's work in this book was tremendously brilliant and remarkable.

                                      5 out of 5 stars Operation Gatekeeper.......2006-01-17

Very well-documented. A useful and must-have source for anyone interested in Southwestern U.S. border enforcement issues.

                                      5 out of 5 stars A fantastic book.......2005-09-30

This book provides a great overview of the U.S.-Mexico border and a compelling analysis and explanation of how we arrived at the point we now find ourselves in terms of immigration and boundary enforcement. I had to read the book for an undergraduate class and found it to be a great way to conclude the course. The book totally challenged me in a way that few other books have.

2 out of 5 stars From a 13 year Border Patrol veteran and first hand witness to Gatekeeper.......2005-09-25

All books have some value. That is the only value of this book.

By page 10, an objective reader will surmise the true intention of the author, to disinform those not familiar with border control issues firsthand. However, the author is arrogant in his methodology, repeatedly rephrasing terms such as illegal alien into more "humane" terminology, in an effort to convince the reader any policy to secure the border runs counter to human rights. The bottom line is that although first offenses at entering the United States illegally are often considered administrative violations(8 USC 1251), there are criminal penalties at 8 USC 1325 and 1326. A fact left out by the author. The decision to prosecute as a criminal matter depends upon many issues including budgets, bedspace, criminal history, and workload of US Attorneys.

As for Gatekeeper, this author has not done his due diligence research. For example, the authenticity of the operation itself and reported results was challenged by the Border Patrol Agents union. Another important fact left out. The resulting investigation, acknowledged as a whitewash by even supporters of the operation, sought to coverup field reports from agents of incompetent strategies and false reporting of results.

In the end, take this book for the only value it provides; one liberal view of border issues. The real irony is that the Bush administration practices what this author preaches. I guess you can call it the convergence of liberalism and capitalism.

4 out of 5 stars Important story often overlooked, excellent book.......2003-11-14

Especially for those of us who live in the Southwest, this is a very important book that contains a reality which is underreported in national and mainstream media. The only reason I have given this book 4 stars rather than 5 is a result of the overall writing style. It is a very historically-based book that can come off as a bit dry at times, but the content and shock value alone more than makes up for it. Read this book and learn about the violence that takes place every day on the US-Mexico border in the name of democracy and freedom.
