Book Description
In today’s tense geopolitical climate, terrorist groups avow their allegiance to the Islamic faith in their edicts, while the president of the United States undertakes controversial wars in Islamic nations and openly refers to his Christian faith as a key component of his decision-making. With the recent surge in terrorist acts and military confrontations, as well as ever-strengthening fundamentalist ideologies on both sides, the Christian-Muslim divide is perhaps more visible than ever—but it is not new. Alan G. Jamieson explores here the long and bloody history of the Christian-Muslim conflict, revealing in his concise yet comprehensive study how deeply this ancient divide is interwoven with crucial events in world history.
Faith and Sword opens with the tumultuous first centuries of the conflict, examining the religious precepts that framed clashes between Christians and Muslims and that ultimately fueled the legendary Crusades. Traversing the full breadth of the Arab lands and Christendom, Jamieson chronicles the turbulent saga from the Arab conquests of the seventh century to the rise of the powerful Ottoman Empire and its fall at the end of World War I. Faith and Sword then explores the complex dynamics that emerged later in the twentieth century, as Christendom was transformed into the secular West and Islamic nations overthrew European colonialism to establish governments straddling modernity and religiosity.
From the 1979 Iranian revolution to the Lebanon hostage crisis to the present-day war in Iraq, Faith and Sword reveals the essence of this enduring struggle and its consequences.

The Longest War.......2007-08-13
A brief, but comprehensive account of the thirteen hundred year conflict between Islam and the Christian civilizations of Byzantium and Western Europe. The book is only 222 pages in length. Yet it is amazingly inclusive. Nothing significant has been left out. At the same time the author's non-judgmental approach eschews the usual anti-western/anti-Christian, or anti Muslim, harangue.
The Crusades, for example, are presented as just one episode in the millennia long see-saw struggle for control of the borderlands between the Islamic World and the West - a European push-back that came after four hundred years of Islamic Jihad and conquest of the Christian lands around the Mediterranean from the Levant to Spain and Portugal.
This book serves no ones ideological or political agenda. It is an objective historical account of the perennial struggle for dominance between Dar al Islam and the Christian (later secular) West. It is primarily a study of conflict, rather than of peaceful intercourse, between two civilizations. (For that see: Zachary Karabell's PEACE BE UPON YOU.)
Four centuries of Muslim expansion and Christian defeat were followed by a period of Christian recovery (during the era of the Crusades and the Reconquest of Sicily, Spain and Portugal), which was followed by four more centuries of Muslim advance under the Ottoman Turks. Finally, the tide of Islamic expansion was reversed by a secularized Europe remade and revitalized by the commercial, industrial, technological and military revolutions of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
What we are witnessing today is a renewed Jihad (Holy War) against a predominantly secular Western Civilization led by fanatic Islamists from some of the most remote and primitive reaches of the world, whose proclaimed objective is to topple the most economically and militarily powerful nations on earth.
Can they succeed? Only if the west crumbles from within through a loss nerve, a collapse of will and self hatred. Only a loss of faith in its own historical achievements, culture, religious and political beliefs and institutions, and a loss of confidence in the rightness of its cause and the will to defend it, can bring Western Civilization down.
It is well to remember, however, that once before (in the seventh and eighth centuries) a horde of backward desert tribesmen inspired by a fanatical faith in Allah overran and destroyed the vastly more advanced Roman Civilization lying peacefully and contentedly around the littoral of the Mediterranean basin.

Book Description
This book reveals the main trends of the formation of petroleum pools in major parts of North African basins. It deals with the regional geology of this important oil- and gas-producing area. Emphasis is laid on paleoenvironmental and provenance reconstructions, trap formation, diagenesis, compaction-decompaction equilibria in petroleum-bearing reservoirs and related fluid geodynamics and oil and gas generation and entrapment. Organic and mineral interaction is shown to be the main process in enhancing reservoir entrapment and filtration properties. This involves a close association of the source and trap formations in time and space. The computer program for basin modeling simulates the burial and thermal histories and petroleum potential in sedimentary basins. Several new concepts and alternative methods are proposed in petroleum geology.

Customer Reviews:
I read this every month.......2004-06-16
Hi My name is Boswell Hemmerich. Coach K can do no wrong. This book goes over how Duke calls each player's name with one syllable instead of two or even three - for example, Chris Duhon is known as 'Chris' instead of 'Chris-Duh-on' and Shelden Williams is 'Shel' instead of 'Shel-den'. This is why Duke and Coach K and this book are nuber 1!!!
You'd have to be a true Blue Devil fan to like this book.......2001-07-12
I got this book thinking it might give me some insight into how Coach K motivates his teams, organizes his practice sessions, and instills leadership qualities in his athletes. What I got was a less than thrilling re-hash of some of his best quotes as seen through the eyes of a local news reporter. You'd have to be a true Blue Devil fan to like this book. I didn't, so I gave it to one of my co-workers who graduated from Duke. He likes it.
Total Class.......2001-03-23
What an awesome book! I would compare this book to Rick Pitino's "Success is a Choice". Much of this book can be used as a guide for how somebody should conduct themselves in relationships. Basketball fans will love this book, as it uses examples from Coach K's life to illustrate points that he makes. Pick it up.

Book Description
This is a definitive and authoritative account of the conservative interpretation of Islam that is the official creed of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: Wahhabism. Muslim critics have dismissed it as a heretical innovation that manipulated a backward people to gain political control. David Commins dismisses the clichés, examines the nature of Wahhabism, and offers original findings as to how Wahhabism rose to dominance in Arabia and projected its influence in the Muslim world. He also assesses the challenges that it faces from radical militants within the Kingdom.

The Best book on Wahhabism and Salafism in the Gulf.......2007-05-09
Of the recent spate of books on Wahhabism, this is by far and away the best. David Commins is better qualified to write on Saudi fundamentalism than just about any other scholar I know. He speaks and reads Arabic with a fluency very few non-natives can match, having lived in the Middle East off and on for many years over the last three decades. He spent over a year researching this in Saudi Arabia as a senior Fulbright Fellow. More importantly, Commins has written on Salafism and religion in the Middle his entire career. This is not a 9-11 inspiration. His earlier book on Salafism and religious reform in Syria is also a masterpiece and should be read in conjunction with this. Commins' knowledge of Islamic movements throughout the Middle East gives him a unique ability to place the Wahhabi movement in the broader context it requires. He compares it to the doctrines of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt and makes judgements throughout that are insightful and wise. Invariably, he strikes the right balance in explaining what was new about Wahhabism and why it developed as it did.
At the time of the Hama massacre in Syria, Commins was living in Damascus. Even then, he was studying the Muslim Brotherhood and Salafism as one of the last students of Richard P. Mitchell, who wrote the classic work on Hassan al-Banna and the Egyptian Brotherhood, "The Society of the Muslim Brothers."
Syrian Authorities told Commins to shave the beard he was wearing 1982 so as not to be arrested on suspicion of belonging to the Ikhwan. Commins befriended Baathist and Muslim Brother alike in his effort to understand all sides of the contentious history and modern debate over Islamic puritanism. In his most recent book, he continues with the same even-handedness and ability to record the voices and opinions of all sides. Commins writes lucidly and compellingly. He does not try to obscure his own opinions, but never lets them get in the way of the sources themselves. This is a brilliant book and a pleasure to read.

A great reference for everyday life.......2007-01-08
I have purchased this book twice now - once for myself, once as a gift - and I wouldn't hesitate to buy it again. Most of the ideas are easy to implement and are accompanied by clear explanations of the ecologic and economic values of "being green." The sections are easy to read and generally interesting, and the resources provided within the text and at the end are quite useful. When you implement the suggestions in this book, you will help the Earth and save money, making it a great value in more ways than one. Highly recommended for "greenies" and "non-greenies" alike. This book was written by the folks at "E the Environmental Magazine" (also terrific, and chock full of great ideas for everyday living).
