Book Description
Doctors write more prescriptions for drugs that combat the pain and inflammation of arthritis than for any other pharmaceutical. But many of these medications have harmful side effects and should not be taken long-term. Fortunately, researchers at several universities may have found the arthritis miracle for which so many people are searching. Lyprinol is a natural compound derived from green-lipped mussels found off the coast of New Zealand. Lyprinol shows exceptional success in halting the progression of joint and connective-tissue problems, as well as in promoting the healing and regeneration of arthritic and injured joints.
This informative book explains the many benefits of lyprinol for treating arthritis and other illnesses, such as asthma and skin disorders, as well as its important role in immune health.
Book Description
While researching an article on Gen. George S. Patton, Kevin M. Hymel made an astonishing discovery. Browsing the Library of Congress's Patton index, he found lists of photo albums. Opening one, he found photos Patton himself took during World War II, a gold mine of historical photographs of which even Blumenson, Patton's official biographer, was unaware.
Patton photographed everything that interested him and produced tableaux of the battlefields of North Africa, Sicily, and continental Europe. For Patton, history was everything, and his Leica camera-standard issue for reporters and historians in the U.S. Army-ensured he could provide historians an accurate depiction of events, free from interpretation. His photographs depict the victorious face of war, with GIs on the move, military bridges under construction, and tanks slicing through the countryside. They show defeat as well-smashed German tanks, prisoners of war, and bodies strewn across the landscape. Moreover, they provide a record of where Patton fought, showcasing historic sights and the different terrain from North Africa to Europe.
Now, for the first time, many of Patton's personal photographs are presented in one book for the reader to observe history as Patton saw it. Hymel provides background information and captions for the photographs and occasionally uses Patton's own words to describe the sights. Patton claimed his hobby once saved his life. Stopping to take a photograph in Italy, he witnessed a salvo of German shells exploding on the roadway up ahead, where he likely would have been had he not stopped. With Patton's Photographs, readers can now view that life during the war through the eye of one of America's greatest commanders.

Incredible Historical Perspective on Patton.......2007-10-06
Throw away all of the previous biographies of Patton (and Patton's own posthumously published diaries) regarding his exploits in World War II unless you read them in conjunction with, and in light of, this book, which stems from an historian's treasure trove of 15 oversized albums of photographs by Patton and other memorabilia he sent to his wife during World War II, often with stories behind the photos and mementos. (His wife, and then one of his daughters after the slapping incidents[s] in Sicily, helped to put the albums together.)
Patton's photo collections, for reasons that are best explained by prior biographers of Patton, lanquished untouched, unviewed, and unused in any history of Patton until the author of this book discovered them in the U.S. Library of Congress in 1996 and was eventually able to publish this selection of those materials in 2006.
The result is an unparalled insight into the mind of one of the greatest military visionaries, strategists, and tacticians of his, or any other, generation.
You cannot claim to understand Patton and his mindset unless, and until, you see the war from his perspective, which this book does in an astounding way as it includes about 150 photographs taken by Patton of things he found to be of interest as he and his armies progressed from North Africa to Sicily to France to Germany.
Also included are about 75 other photographs relating to Patton and his military adventures, including photos taken of him by others and maps/diagrams on which he outlined his strategies and tactics.
The book basically tells the otherwise well-known story of Patton in his various campaigns, beginning in North Africa in November 1942, to the end of the Third Reich and Patton's brief post-war experiences until his untimely death in December 1945 from a vehicle accident (his famous, almost last words, when the doctors arrived on the scene were: "I think I'm paralyzed" [he was, from the neck down and died from complications 11 days later]).
Each chapter of the book is enriched by numerous sidebars about Patton and those around him as well as enhanced by footnotes for the many quotations by, and anecdotes about, Patton sprinkled liberally throughout the text and the captions of the photographs.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I have read dozens and dozens of photographic histories relating to World War II on a wide, wide variety of topics (not to mention hundreds of standard works and texts and the not too occasional foray into historical fiction). (In this regard I disagree with those people who believe - mistakenly - that a book is somehow beneath them and has nothing to offer unless it is a dry, poorly written, dusty tome devoid of illustrations and about some minuscule aspect of history that more often than not fails to put its subject matter into any kind of context because the author suffers from the syndrome of being unable to see the forest for the trees.) This stands out far and above as the best photographic history that I can recall, especially as it relates to a specific person or subject. It is must reading (and viewing) by any serious student of Patton or World War II in general.
Stunning Job!!!.......2007-06-02
This book is great. Not only does the reader get a general history of Patton, but also many, many photographs taken by the great General himself! It is amazing to think that when you are looking at these photos, you are really seeing what Patton saw! Imagine what it would be like of Julius Caesar, George Washington, or Napoleon had carried a camera so that we could see what they saw. Well, essentially, that is what this book is - it allows you to see what a great hero saw.
I congratulate Mr Hymel on his wonderful find, and encourage all who are interested in Patton or just WWII in general to take a look at this great book...
Patton's Photographs: War As He Saw It.......2006-11-10
Excellent book - would recommend to any fan or person interested in General George S. Patton. Photographs show his interest and focus as he battled through WW 2.
Not the best quality pictures, But The Most Interesting.......2006-05-17
There are several famous photographs of Patton with his camera around his neck. It never occurred to me that if he carried the camera he probably used it, and if he used it, the pictures would be interesting to see. It apparently never occurred to anyone else until Mr. Hymel found some references to Patton's Photo Albums in the Library of Congress.
The result is this book. Patton was not the best photographer ever. The pictures taken by the professionals of the U.S. Army Signal Corps of Patton (a few are included in this book) are better. But what Patton's pictures show is not the great technical quality of the pictures, it is the content that interested Patton.
Patton was the consumate general. He was concerned with the equipment of the enemy - and here are pictures of German tanks. He was concerned with things like how his army moved - and here are pictures of his soldiers building bridges.
I have seen the George C. Scott movie of course. This book follows the same general path. What's interesting is to see it as Patton saw it himself. This is a fascinating book that belongs in any World War II book collection.

Customer Reviews:
A fascinating book.......2000-03-31
A well-written book full of interesting information. The only problem with the book is that Agnes Keyser seems to be more of an afterthought to Alice Keppel than a subject in her own right. The treatment of Mrs. Keppel is wonderfully detailed. I highly recommend this book!
Book Description
Reportedly, Camilla Parker Bowles said to Prince Charles when she first met him in 1970: My great grandmother was the mistress of your great great grandfather--so how about it? Here, you can read the story of her great grandmother Alice Keppel, and see how her affair with Edward VII has paralleled with Camilla's relationship with the future king today.
Customer Reviews:
So So biography.......2006-08-13
This is a good biographical overview of Mrs. Keppel. I found the information in the book about Agnes Keyser to be skimpy and somewhat lacking in clarity. The info on Mrs. Keyser is placed in this book almost as an afterthought, to give the book a new angle. If you are looking for general information on Edward and Mrs. Keppel this is the book for you. If you want an in depth biography, use another source. An ok read if you want to kill a couple of afternoons.

Book Description
Charred Souls describes the childhood of one child and her 6 siblings as they grew up in a family that used child abuse as a source of entertainment. In her book, she describes the methods of intimidation, torture and isolation used to keep the children from seeking help from others. It also describes how, since much of the extended family practiced the same type of abusive behavior, the children assumed the whole world lived this way. This family, while they may have been reported as potential child abusers, were never charged or prosecuted despite the atrocious, sadistic torture they subjected their young children to. Trena, the oldest child, became the parental role model, nurturer and caretaker for the younger children from the age of five, never having anyone to nurture or care for her.
Customer Reviews:
You have to read this book if you are stuggling with recreational child abuse.......2007-10-16
This story really moved me. It's told in an honest way, which means the language is graphic at times, but we are dealing with child abuse and child abuse is ugly. The form of child abuse Charred Souls focuses on is recreational child abuse which is basically when a parent abuses a child for fun and entertainment. The fact that Trena survived is amazing and that she survived to become a well balanced adult woman is a tribute to her dynamic spirit. I wish her sibling had been so fortunate. If you were moved by "A child called It" this story will likely move you as well, caution, the language is just as Trena remembers it..but I personally feel it is needed so we can really know what it was like to be a charred soul.
Very good read..but had a few little minor scrapes.......2007-03-26
This is a good book if you are studying child abuse, or familiar with it. I was looking into going back to school for social work and this book is really good at making you aware of what can happen out there to children. Trena tells a good story. Whoever edited it though, didn't do a good job. It can be repetivie , but that didn't bother me as much as the misspelled words (there were only a few)
The author did a good job at telling the story and if you can overlook some of the spelling errors you've got yourself a pretty darn good book!!
Incredible........2006-08-11
Ms. Cole's book was recommended to me by Amazon after a search. I found it to be well worth ordering it and worth the read from the moment I started reading. Ms. Cole has taken a terribly horrid childhood and risen above it in order to write a book that could teach all how to see signs of child or recreational abuse of a child(ren). It is very useful for all who deal with, are relative too a child. This book tore at my soul reading, it hurt to read but I could not put it down. I am blessed to have come acrossed it and have recommended it to others as a nurse, a mother and friend.
Ms. Cole knows of what she speaks and where she came from to be able to look upon her past and learn from it. Cold hearted is the soul that can look at this book and not wish they were on hand to steal this poor children away and give them a better more loving life. Or imagine that they know better what this life was like and what name to call it by. If the name, Recreational Child Abuse fits and helps Ms. Cole and others on their way therapeutically(sp?)all the better. I cannot imagine a person reading word for word in this book and not seeing into the horrors of these young lives.
These things (any sort of abuse, but the worst being to a child)happen and happen far too often. People do over look warning signs until it is too late. This has happened in our society time and time again. Ms. Cole's book is a fine aid in learning more about abuse. I believe that it has more than likely saved a child somewhere in that someone had knowledge gained from this book.
I look forward to the next book by Ms. Cole and I am sure I will be recommending to others as well.
What a kid!.......2006-08-03
I guess I should say "What kids!" because there were seven all together and all were impressive in some way. I had to buy Charred Souls for a class and I can't wait for school to start so I can discuss it with my professor and fellow students. This is an incredible story about constant emotional and verbal abuse of children. I was impressed with the raw emotion Trena Cole emitted with her writing and I was actually impressed with her style. Yes there are grammatical errors but I think this story is important enough to forgive those. I give her enormous credit for sharing her emotions and feelings through her book. It wasn't an easy read but it couldn't have been an easy write either.
poorly written.......2006-07-03
I was excited to read this book, but am finding it very difficult to get through because it is written so poorly. The whole book is very repetitive which gets very annoying. A better editor or publisher would have done this book wonders.

Book Description
Kesselring is a complete and in-depth biography of this key German commander who was a master strategist of the Second World War. The book is based on pioneering research and access to Kesselring's private papers.
Customer Reviews:
straight to the recycle bin.......2006-02-25
While my copy of Kesselring was the ancient hardcover edition, it took me until last year to finally get around to reading it. This is a disappointing book in that it is typical of much of military history written 30 to 40 years ago. Lacking in the original detail that comes with a well-researched study, this generalized text provides neither balance or a real portrait of this enigmatic general. Macksey fails to rise above his bias or provoke any new discussion on "Smiling Albert" with this mundane biography. My copy went straight to the recycle bin.
great General, mediocre biography.......2001-01-04
This isn't a very well written book; it is positively fawning of Kesselring and occasionally unfair his foes (the slighting of Rommel is relentless.) Curiously, after finishing it, I wondered if Kesselring can really be termed a strategist at all in the classical sense. Throughout Kesselring's expertise is proven at the operational level, but I could find only one example of Kesselring's decisionmaking or views impacting effecting strategy -- the fighting in North Africa after El Alamein/Torch. Kesselring is portraited as consistently urging a fight for Tunisia, as opposed to the depressed Rommel, who counsels withdrawal to the mainland. Kesselring wins the argument, and the result is one of Germany's most catastrophic defeats, and certainly its most preventable -- the surrender of 345,000 battle-hardened men, irreplacable tanks and mountains of equipment stores at Tunis. In hindsight it seems unarguable that Kesselring's 'defend Tunisia' viewpoint (which crammed in resources Hitler denied Rommel previosly and desperately needed on the Eastern Front) was disaster strategically despite his operational successes there, yet Macksey never addresses this phenominal blunder, one would assume because Kesselring's advice was clearly wrong.
We are constantly told by the author how brilliant Kesselring was but he doesn't produce many compelling examples to show it. One example is laughable -- Kesselring is praised because he forbid planes to fly with defective bombs that were exploding in mid-air (would only average commanders have allowed flights to continue?!?!?) While Kesselring is portrayed as diplomatic (rare among Hitler's generals), common sense, an optimist who made do with the resources he had, steady in crisis, sound in judgement, and a quite capable handler of troops, the fact remains that he had the easiest task of any of the Third Reich's commanders in the last two years of the war -- defend the mountainous Italian peninsula (so narrow that his flank couldn't be threatened) against a minimal allied force.
I looked forward to the book's last chapter on Kesselring's controversial postwar trial with anticipation but the specific issues of guilt in the charges are never clearly explained. As with the rest of the book, the author's favorable view of his subject in this section is dominant at the expense of even informing the reader, much less being able to inform the reader without bias.
The first and only accurate biography of this master strateg.......1998-08-04
This book is back in print! Greenhill books is publishing it. This book is better than Macksey's Guderian and it even seems that Macksey believes that Kesselring was the superior strategist compared to Guderian. You always new that the Field Marshal was one of the top German generals based on the German's defensive efforts in Italy and now you can finally know this amazing man. Macksey points out that Kesselring's lack of publicity was usually due to his modesty and unwillingness to "play the German propaganda machine" as Rommel did through out his career. From World War I, the rise of the Luftwaffe, the battle of Britain, Barbarossa, and finally the Mediterranean front, Kesselring's genius and mistakes are covered in detail. In the end you realize that Kesselring stood near the top of Germany's World War II generals. Macksey is brings Kesselring alive in his book and by the end of the book you may discover what I did -- empathy for this amazing man.
Book Description
The Supreme Court may appear to be a less political body than Congress or the executive branch, but in fact it is a fundamentally political institution, deeply engaged in the struggles for power that shape American politics and society. David O'Brien shows students how the Supreme Court is a "storm center" of political controversy, where personality, politics, law, and justice come together to help determine the course of public policy.
This thoroughly updated Seventh Edition of Storm Center continues to chart historic steps taken by the Court, drawing on new material from the recently opened private papers of Justice Harry A. Blackmun, and including expanded coverage of the Rehnquist court and its impact on American life.
Customer Reviews:
Witty and informative.......2004-07-11
As an undergraduate student studying constitutional law, I found this book an excellent introduction into the court politics. O'Brien writes and organizes his book in a coherent way, allowing for the maximum material absorption coupled with intriguing facts and footnotes. "Storm Center" reveals the court as a human and error-prone institution evolving over time into a kind of super-legislation, becoming at the same time both more independent and intertwined in regard to the other two branches.
Overall, an enjoyable read for anyone willing to peak at the kitchen of law.
Helpful insight into the court..........2000-12-04
This is an excellent examination into the history of the court and the politics that led to its current make-up. O'Brien does a good job making this an interesting and often riviting historical examination.
This has become a valuable tool in my personal and educational understanding of today's court. With the public eye close to the court these days (Presidential Election) the individual and personal examinations that O'Brien has provided on the court has helped me to make my own judgements and predictions as to possible decisions. An excellent purchase for the beginner or well seasoned court watcher.
Get Acquainted with the Supreme Court.......2000-05-23
If you know only a bare minimum about the Supreme Court, or know a lot, this is an excellent book to supplement that knowledge. It is both an excellent narrative about some of the biggest battles between the Justices themselves and an informational text explaining the ins-and-outs of how a case actually comes to be decided by the Court. All in all, it is well worth reading.

Book Description
At twenty-three, Alison Watt left the comfort of a relationship and urban life to spend four months studying tufted puffins on Triangle Island, a remote bird sanctuary far off the northern tip of Vancouver Island.
She spent her summer in the company of Anne Vallée, a serious young biologist whose dedication to her field made her a formidable and inspiring mentor. Now, in the sixteen years since Watt last visited the island, Anne has died, and from the moment Watt arrives to do more research, she is flooded with memories of the summer they spent together.
Told in a gripping diary form, The Last Island blends native legends, evolutionary theory, scientific knowledge and an appreciation for the delicate balance required for creatures as small as krill and as large as fin whales to survive. Watt brings the island to life, recreating through sensual detail the sounds, smells, sights, tastes and textures of this desolate bird haven. Perhaps even more importantly, she recreates the jagged inner landscape of a young woman worn and warmed by months of seclusion.

Book Description
For millions of Americans, birdwatching is nothing less than an obsession. For enthusiasts, the excitement of sighting a rare species, the pleasure of watching a bird in flight, and the satisfaction of being able to spot and identify different birds constitute a burning passion that travels
with them wherever they go. The Birdwatcher's Handbook provides a marvelous resource for these dedicated hobbyists, offering a compendium of information about European birds that will be a delight to armchair readers and vacationers alike.
In The Birdwatcher's Handbook, authors Paul Ehrlich, David Dobkin, Darryl Wheye, and Stuart Pimm provide in-depth information about British and Northern European birds not found in standard guides. Unlike quick-reference spotter's guides, this volume combines helpful identification aids with
thorough descriptions of the birds' behavior and characteristics. Here you can find out where a bird nests, what type of nest it builds, and which partner builds it; how many eggs it lays, what they look like, which parent incubates them, and for how long; how it cares for its young, what it likes
to eat, and its foraging habits. This comprehensive volume also provides details about displays, mating, wintering and migration, conservation status, and guides to further reading. For the dedicated birdwatcher on the go (in one of the most popular vacation destinations for Americans), this
information will constitute invaluable help for locating and following different birds, and for identifying them by their behavior as well as their appearance. And both bird-loving travelers and homebound enthusiasts will delight in the comprehensive background this book provides on 515 separate
species--including 150 short essays on avian natural history.
Bird-watchers form a remarkable group, dedicated to following their passion from the backyard to the most distant places. The Birdwatcher's Handbook provides the information they need for both at-a-glance reference in the field and hours of reading pleasure at home--the perfect companion to a
trusted identification guide.
