Book Description
In this series of fun and playful activities, young children meet the only North American marsupial, learning a lot about opossums, marsupials, and animal behavior. Drama, role-playing, and art are interwoven with science, math, and language arts as students make model opossum pouches, create baby opossums with pipe cleaner tails, and sniff out and munch on opossum snacks. Throughout the unit, children gain practice measuring, estimating, and counting, and, in the culminating activity, they make a book of drawings and writings about opossums.
The activities can be done in classrooms, day care centers, or at home, and are ment for anyone who works with children. Complete information on opossums is provided for adults, along with lists of resources and children1s literature. The activities have been extensively tested by educators across the country.
A fascinating nocturnal creature, the opossum is close to the imaginations of many children. These creative, teacher-tested Opossum activities provide a wealth of meaningful and positive learning experiences.

A dated but still worthwhile gathering of perspectives.......2005-04-10
"Don't Ask, Don't Tell: Debating the Gay Ban in the Military" is edited by Aaron Belkin and Geoffrey Bateman. The book collects the proceedings from a conference, held in December 2000, entitled "Don't Ask, Don't Tell: Is the Gay Ban Based on Military Necessity or Prejudice?" In the book's preface it is noted that views opposing the inclusion of gays in the military are underrepresented because some invitees declined to participate, and also because one invitee who supported the ban changed his position before the conference. The book focuses on the United States military.
The text is broken down into eight primary sections: (1) an introduction, (2) a historical overview, (3) an inquiry into whether or not the ban preserves soldiers' privacy, (4) an inquiry into whether or not the ban helps unit cohesion, (5) a discussion of the experience of foreign militaries, (6) a look at the cost, both financial and human, of the ban, (7) a pair of talks by two openly gay servicemen, and finally (8) an inquiry into the future of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy.
I found the book to be interesting and often thought-provoking. The substantial historical overview (pp. 9-49) discusses important studies of this issue, as well as significant court cases (Matlovich, Berg, Ben-Shalom, Steffan, etc.) that have challenged the ban. The discussion on foreign militaries features perspectives from New Zealand, Australia, the UK, and Israel. At times the discussion is quite moving, such as when activist Dixon Osburn discusses the impact of the ban on gay military people. Particularly fascinating are the personal stories of the two openly gay servicemen, U.S. Army officer Steve May and Royal Navy sailor Rob Nunn; both men show a human side to this controversy.
Although this is a valuable text, I was struck by how dated it feels. Because the conference predates the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq are not addressed; both of these military campaigns are, in my opinion, critically relevant to the book's topic on multiple levels. Also ironic is the fact that the British ban on gays serving openly had been lifted less than a year before this conference; as I write this review that policy change is now over five years old. Still, the discussion is intriguing, and at their best the participants challenge assumptions and encourage genuine critical thinking on this very controversial issue.
an excellent contribution to the debates.......2003-03-14
This collection offers an invaluable contribution to the debates about gays and lesbians serving in the military. For anyone interested in thinking through the issues rigorously, this book is a "must read."
Perfect introduction to the field.......2003-03-12
A compelling reading of an important, and increasingly timely, topic -- impressively well-researched and clearly written.
Finally an intelligent discourse of a failed policy.......2003-03-09
How incredible to have an intellectual discussion of such a politically charged topic. This work skillfully dissects multiple viewpoints of the ongoing policy debate that have prevented gays from serving in the military. In contrast to the superficial discussion of this topic in the news media, Belkin and Bateman present a thoughtful and reflective commentary on all aspects of this complex debate. "Don't ask, Don't tell" is truly an impressive and stimulating book.
Compelling and insightful overview to this issue.......2003-03-08
This volume presents a number of compelling insights to the debate surrounding "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and gays and lesbians in the military. Perhaps most interesting is its treatment of the British armed forces's decision to lift its ban. A former opponent to gays in the British military--an important academic who has worked extensively with the British military--discusses openly his change of position and describes the process through which the British military began to allow gays and lesbians to serve. Considering how closely the U.S. has been working with the United Kingdom, it makes such dicussion even more relevant.
I was also struck by the excellent historical overview to the U.S. military's policies prior to "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," which shows the hypocrisy of the U.S. military and its ability--if it were to decide to do it--to lift the ban.
Overall, the volume balances compelling personnal narratives about the ban with an objective eye to the rich body of research that has been done on this issue.

A REMARKABLE ACHIEVEMENT.......2001-03-12
This was truly an astonishing achievement and a labor of love for historian Aryeh Grabois, who completed this 750-page, double columned encyclopedia entirely on his own. There is much to love about it: well-written entries that end with one or several excellent recommendations for further reading, cross-referencing, and color plates and copious illustrations.
But what really stands out is the author's clear vision that medieval civilization, meaning medieval European civilization, was the product of many and disparate influences from around the world and from other faiths. He casts his net widely. There are entries on China and India, and many more on leaders and thinkers from the Arab world. The intersection of Islamic, Jewish and Christian worlds are described from many perspectives; art, science, philosophy, religious movements, and even within people: the case, for example of the assimilating Pietroleone family who produced the "Jewish pope" Anacletus II. If I have a minor quibble, it is the fact that Mayan art is profiled, but pre-Columbian civilization is otherwise ignored. Frankly, I would have left Mayan art out for consistency's sake.
I have had the pleasure of owning this volume for more than 20 years and continue to relish the insights it offers. For example, on witchcraft, we have this: "Up to the 13th century witches, who prepared love potions for knights and members of the aristocracy, were referred to without negative connotations in the medieval literature. In many cases these witches were considered a marginal group of society, like the hermits. However, where witchcraft was seen as challenging, directly or indirectly, the authority of the church, it was condemned as heresy."

Cry of the Kalahari.......2007-10-04
Wonderful book that enables one to live the experiences of this dedicated couple who gave so much to the animals of Africa through their research. This book tore at my heartstrings and made me even more excited about my upcoming trip to Africa.
Seven Years in the African Desert.......2007-07-08
Two grad students, having married shortly after their University of Georgia college education began their graduate studies in zoology in the Kalahari desert in Botswana. I've heard grad students' lives are poor and hard, but this couples' 7 year field study takes the mealie-meal. They carefully rationed water and gasoline and lived on mealie-meal (cornmeal), ostrich eggs, and antelope meat; they'd nearly run out of money and write grants to pay for their supplies only and with no money left to fly home. They survived on these paltry sums and did their research in temperatures that sometimes got as high as 120 degrees Fahrenheit surrounded by lions, leopards, and cheetahs in the midst of one of Africa's most inhospitable areas.
This true story is truly amazing and I can't wait to read their other books about Africa. The book was published in 1984 and I wonder if their research had any influence in the IMAX film The Serengeti which is about the greatest wildebeest migration that happens in the Serengeti area in Tanzania and Kenya. In the back of the book is a brief recommendation for wildlife management in the Kalahari desert. In reading this, one can't but be reminded of Jane Gooddall's and the Adamson's work with wildlife in East Africa. It's also a survivors' tale, adventuresome and exciting, but most of all great research. Excellent all around!
A wonderful adventure.......2007-05-02
I do not wish to write a review, other than to say I read this book many years ago and it has stayed with me. Mark and Delia's story was fascinating and I was enthralled with their descriptions of the Kalahari and the animals they observed. I wanted to rate this book, so that the rating could be used in making future recommendatipons for me.
Cry of the Kalahari .......2007-01-10
This is a fantastic and TRUE story that will capture the hearts of anyone who loves nature, wild animals, adventure, hardship, and over coming huge odds. It is a love story on several levels. It is a story about love of nature, love of animals, and the author couples love for each other. Excellent reading.
The Kalahari!.......2006-09-30
Gripping and enthralling:A narrative of the adventures of two nascent scientists in the vastness and rapidly disappearing Kalahari region of Botswana.
I was swept away by this book; the personal struggles of the young couple, and their passion for the animals in this remote region.
A classic of adventure and nature liturature.
Highly recommended!

Postmodern war is more dangerous than ever........1998-08-13
Gray is an academic historian who crosses the study of military history with the history of technology. His primary thesis in the book, which is a revision of his PhD dissertation, is that the nature of war shifted in the mid-20th century from a modernist position of war for the sake of ideology (e.g., totalitarian versus democratic rule) to a postmodernist position of war for the sake of regional and economic conflict. To readers unfamiliar with debates over what is modernism or postmodernism, the thesis may seem insignificant, and Gray does little to introduce these concepts to a readership wider than that of the initiated. His bibliography is good though, so readers may follow up on the references to enhance their understanding of modernity. As for the question of new technology in war, Gray presents some provocative examples of how the developed world's faith in technology renders it blind to the pitfalls of confronting a determined and decidedly anti-modern enemy in the developing world. As many have claimed, when the Cold War ended, the world's conflicts altered from an east-west axis (capitalist versus communist) to a north-south axis (the haves versus the have nots). Gray alludes to this idea, but he could bring it out more in further writing on the problem of how an unquestioning adherence to new technologies leads to more defeat than victory. After all, the moral dilemma of war remains: Each soldier must kill the enemy one bullet at a time, and no amount of distancing from this difficult task by advanced military weapons lessens the gravity of the decision to wage war. Any distraction from this problem by the enchantment with advanced technology only makes the world a more dangerous place. Gray says as much, and I agree.
Book Description
This new text on global political economy provides a uniquely ranging historical account of the emergence of a worldwide economy since the 15th century combined with a systematic analysis of international political economy today. The book is theoretically informed but, unlike many books in its field, it introduces a range of approaches and shows how these can be applied and how useful they are in tackling--key issues from trade, production, and finance to social divisions, development, and the environment. It concludes by considering global governance and how markets can be regulated to meet human purposes in an increasingly global economy.
Customer Reviews:
Ideal introduction to the topic.......2006-11-20
O'Brien and Williams have drawn together all of the threads that represent a meaningful introduction to the global political economy.
The text makes an ideal reference for a single semester course on the topic as part of a masters in international relations
Textbook.......2006-02-24
This book is a textbook and reads exactly like just that. If you can handle reading a textbook then you can handle reading this. Not exactly a book I'd read for fun.
Book Description
This popular and successful text provides a comprehensive introduction to the global political economy of today, set in a broad historical context. It introduces an unusually wide range of theoretical approaches and highlights how useful they are in tackling key issues--from trade, production and finance to social divisions, development and the environment. The second edition has been revised and updated throughout with the addition of additional chapters on gender, on ideas and information, and on key issues and debates for 21st century IPE.

Book Description
Birds are not particularly well suited to desert life. Unlike mammals, they are generally active during the day and do not usually go underground to escape the intense desert heat. Among the few types of birds that have successfully invaded the desert ecosystem are the predators. Many species of hawks, owls, roadrunners, vultures, and shrikes survive very well in deserts. What attributes make this group especially suited to desert life? How have they augmented their abilities to cope with the harsh constraints imposed by the desert habitat? These are among the issues explored in this new volume, which brings together much of the current research on adaptations of avian desert predators.
