Book Description
The bible for natural baby and child care.
For parents who live natural, environmentally responsible lives, child rearing can seem impossible. From feeding to healing, clothing to washing, raising children naturally can be a daunting taskunless you know how.
BR>Natural Baby and Childcare helps parents who want to raise a "green" baby. This comprehensive book discusses how to complement conventional medicine with alternative treatments such as homeopathy, essential oils, and herbal medicine; how to bathe your child without using damaging chemicals; and how to feed your baby healthy, organic food. As a physician and a mom, Dr. Lauren Feder skillfully bridges the divide between medicine and motherhood, empowering parents to personalize traditional child-rearing practices to their own child.
Natural Baby and Childcare answers common questions such as:
Are there any side effects of homeopathic medicine?
What alternatives are there to wasteful baby products, such as plastic diapers?
Is breastfeeding good for my baby?
Can chamomile really cure colic?
What side effects can vaccinations have?
Dr. Feder encourages parents to examine the conventional products that are offered and be choosy about which to include in their own children's lives. With information for all stages and ages, Natural Baby and Childcare is a comprehensive, intelligent, and reassuring guide to raising healthy and happy children. 50 photos.

Comprehensive and authoritative.......2007-01-23
As new parents, this book offers unique insight into childrearing issues we are facing. Particularly valuable is the author's fresh rethinking of many aspects of childcare that are usually overlooked or taken for granted in our society, such as vaccination, diapering, diet, the sleep ritual, and the avoidance of toxic materials of which, unbeknownst to many of us, many baby toys and products are made.
As is befitting of a book written by a medical doctor who specializes in alternative medicine, a significant portion is devoted to an A-to-Z discussion of various childhood ailments, with conventional treatment discussed side-by-side with homeopathic options.
In short, this is a book that should hold a special place in the library of every thoughtful new parent.
EXTREMELY important piece of work.......2006-11-29
I have two children, the first of whom suffered greatly from traditional
Western pediatric approaches. Every time anything was wrong,
he would be prescribed yet another dose of antibiotics and sent
on his way with little or no "preventative" or "alternative" methods
ever discussed, let alone prescribed.
This book represents a MAJOR milestone in the treatment of
infants and young children. It emphasizes a healthful,
holistic and homeopathic approach toward dealing with the complex
issues of children's health. I believe the treatments that are revealed
by the ultra-imformed Dr Feder will become a new "status quo" for
a country (US) that is drowning in antibiotics and misinformation.
Thank you Dr Feder for providing us with a new blue print for
developing a healthful and informed attitude toward the
treatment of childhood ailments and creating a life of
wellness and happiness!
Glad to be a parent starting out with this book!.......2006-08-29
Natural Baby is just the reference book I was looking for. I have a 1.5-year-old son and would have benefited from this reading from when he was first born. Luckily I have another on the way and am much more educated on the subject of babies! My Mom is very much into conventional medicine (just give him Tylenol and he will be fine) which is not where I am at this point in time. So this book and its teachings are just the thing I need for support of a holistic approach to raising my children. Her book is very detailed. It has everything you need to know about vaccinations, childhood ailments, breastfeeding, co-sleeping, homeopathy, and much more. I thought I was up on most natural and non-intrusive ways to raise my children.
Then I found the section on what clothes are made of and what is in the plastic that makes up the toys he plays with as well as the pacifier that goes in his mouth and on and on and on. It is nice to know there is a Doctor out there that is attuned to how the body, mind and spirit all work together. I like the fact she has two children of her own and the remedies in this book have been tried and proven. My son bumped his mouth a few months back and with his new teeth got a fat lip. I used the remedy Arnica Montana that I had on hand (luckily, thanks to this book) and the swelling went down almost immediately.
Thank you Dr. Feder for such a comprehensive book that I will get for people for Christmas presents... The info is much appreciated :)
Finally.. A book for 21st Century health care.......2006-08-09
Five years ago when I had my son everyone and their sister told me to get "What to Expect" ....and I got it and I read it and I felt less than nothing. Just a big, fat, clunk. nada.
I am much more crunchy than a lot of moms but I'm not that far out there. (No homebirth for me) but gosh, what I would have done for something like this book back then. When my son was having a fever everything in me said, "skip the tylenol" it just felt wrong to me... and in fact in Feder's book (page 362) she describes it best.."The fever and its accompanying symptoms, whle anoying are vital in helping to strengthen the immune system and ward off future infection." I now let my son burn off his fevers and I am willing to push it to 104.....this just felt right in my gut and that's what makes Feder's book so great.. it answers to some of us who have different guts than the ones that ring over the 'what to expect' books...
A must-have book for parents.......2006-07-21
The great thing about this book is that it gives you both the "standard medicine" approach to any of your child's problems, and also the "alternative" approach. This means that, unless you have an emergency situation, you have the option of trying the alternative approach first, to see how you like it. Often you can avoid having to give your child antibiotics, or steroids, etc. I think this is what makes this book unique.

Concise yet complete tour guide with great graphics.......2003-02-28
The editorial reviews on this paperback are right on the mark. It is an excellent 124-page booklet that follows the formal tour guide route.
The front tour section starts by providing just the right amount of "selected" detail (with some well-cropped and selected photos)on each of the 16 stops (36 pages). I was able to take the book out and use it as a quick stop tour. I found the positons easily (as they were concisely marked), then read the short, but complete narrative. I really got the context of the complete battle by putting all the tour stops together because the "important details" were included at each stop.
After the tour, an account of the fighting is described by day, hours and short descriptor, e.g."Action of Buford's Calvary, 8:00 to 10:00 am, July 1" (78 pages). Superb graphics that clearly sketch out positions with key topography markers help you fix on the formations. They are very distingushable as they are marked with reference to the modern day road structure in he park (e.g. you can tell the bulk of Pickett's division-by brigade-was originally lined up much farther south than the positon of Lee's statue in their charge by the Spangler house).
The final pages of the book summarize the strength and losses by unit (i.e. numbers by brigade level, but specifying the regiments included) and a good one-page suggested reading list (that shows the better Gettysburg books).
I have been to this field five times. It is a very good book for new and repeat visitors.

Book Description
The treaty of Rapallo, concluded in 1922 between Germany and the Soviet Union, the two vanquished powers of the Great War, ranks high among the diplomatic coups de surprise of the twentieth century. Its real importance, however, lies in the repercussions of the alliance on the subsequent policies of the two victorious powers, Britain and France. This study examines the impact of Rapallo on British foreign policy between 1922 and 1934, when the German-Soviet relationship had virtually ended. The 'ghost of Rapallo' is the central theme of this story, as ever since the treaty's conclusion Rapallo has been a byword for Soviet-German secret and potentially dangerous collaboration. This book describes how the British viewed the Rapallo co-operation, how they dealt with this special relationship, and how the lingering memory of Rapallo affected British policy for decades to come. While examining a particular aspect of international relations it throws additional light on broader topics of European relations in the 1920s and early 1930s.Dr STEPHANIE SALZMANN completed her PhD, on which this book is based, at Trinity Hall, Cambridge.

The Book of Kells: informing and illuminating.......2007-09-30
The Book of Kells is one of the most beautiful manuscripts in existence. This booklet enables those of us who are unlikely to ever see the real manuscript to feast our eyes on many of the illustrations as well as to learn a little of its history and preparation. Most of the illustrations are in colour and their vibrancy is still apparent across 12 centuries.
I consider that this booklet is worth acquiring for the illustrations alone. It also contains a lot of useful information for those interested in the physical preparation of such manuscripts as well as the underlying historical significance of this particular manuscript.
Highly recommended.

The Book of Kells: An Illustrated Introduction.......2007-01-13
The book was just what I was expecting. Shipping was quick.
Darkness into Light.......2005-08-25
I was glad I had this book along with me when I went to see the real Book of Kells at the Trinity College Library in Dublin. The lines of tourists waiting to view this famous eighth century manuscript were about a quarter of a mile long, and the museum proctors were really hustling us through the area where a small sampling of pages were actually on view.
(If you take the tour, be sure to check out the main chamber of the Old Library with its first editions of Newton and Darwin, plus the harp that is (alas, falsely) attributed to Brian Boru, high king of Ireland).
The first facsimile of the Book of Kells was published in 1974, and although this book only advertises itself as 'an illustrated introduction to the manuscript...' it contains good color plates of many of the most famous pages, e.g. the symbols of the four evangelists and the beginning of the 'Breves causae' of Matthew, among others.
Author, Bernard Meehan, the current Keeper of Manuscripts at Trinity College states that "the sacred text itself was copied in the Book of Kells with a remarkable degree of inaccuracy." It consists of the Latin text of the Gospels, illuminated in the very ornate Hiberno-Saxon style ('Hiberno' refers to the Irish, or Hibernians).
Legend has it that the Book of Kells was produced by St. Colum Cille on the island of Iona off western Scotland. Although it was probably begun in the Irish monastery on Iona, it was taken to the monastery of Kells in County Meath, after a series of Viking raids. The monastery on Iona was pillaged in 795, and again in 802. According to the author, "In 806, sixty-eight of the community were killed in another raid. The following year, the survivors migrated to Ireland and began to erect conventual buildings at Kells..." where the illumination of the manuscript was probably completed.
If you are interested in the historical background of the Book of Kells, the author devotes a whole Appendix to it.
Alas, according to this book's second Appendix, "Losses, Additions and Marginalia," the Book of Kells has not remained intact down through the centuries. "At present there are 340 folios, but around thirty folios, including some major decorated pages have been lost." The monks also used blank spaces in the manuscript to record details of property transactions in the late eleventh and twelfth centuries.
Meehan's book is definitely worth viewing and reading. It also contains a wealth of the smaller decorative illustrations that do not always relate to the sacred text, e.g. hares, dogs, horses, and at least one moth. The color and minute details of these decorations are a source of endless fascination, and the scholarly text, although a trifle dry, is also very interesting.
awesome pictures, horrible writing.......2005-05-16
I like how the author gives various images of the book of kells, but gets really confusing and goes all over the place while writing about it. I think a lot could be learned from this book, but the author crams so many examples into the work that it starts to get annoying. Ever line seems to have parenthesis around something and folio this or that. For that alone i give the book two stars, multiple examples are good, just not when you plague every line with one. It hardly gives the reader a chance to understand the first few.
"The most precious object in the western world".......2002-12-01
Resting at Trinity College Dublin is one of the truly singular products of early European art. This is 'The Book of Kells,' an ornately illuminated rendition of the four gospels, rendered sometime in the Ninth Century. It has been both an influence and an inspiration since the time of its making, illustrating both the story it tells, and the subtle mind of symbolists who wove the story and the art together.
One of the key problems the student of illustrated art suffers in any attempt to study 'The Book of Kells' is the simple matter of access. I believe that the replica edition of the book cost nearly $20,000 when it was published, and most other resources limit themselves to only the most famous of the pages. Only a few detailed studies exist, and this one, written by Bernard Meehan (Keeper of Manuscripts at Trinity College), is one of the best, both in terms of quality and quantity of reproduction as well as a literate and thorough discussion.
Meehan covers the book's history, influences and parallels, the decorative scheme, and many of the decorative themes used by the illuminators. He also spends time on the more technical aspects of ink and paper. He does this in a pleasant, straightforward yet academically thorough style that is often a fount of information. Where he does not go himself, he provides indications of other possibilities for research and thought. Meehan's agenda is simply to present one of the wonders of human creativity for all to see and enjoy, and he succeeds admirably.

Book Description
Standards and codes dictate virtually all aspects of urban development. The same standards for subdividing land, grading, laying streets and utilities, and configuring rights-of-way and street widths to accommodate cars (rather than pedestrians) have been adopted in many areas of the world regardless of variations in local environments. In The Code of the City, Eran Ben-Joseph examines the relationship between standards and place making. He traces the evolution of codes and standards and analyzes their impact on the modern city and its suburbs, arguing that it is time for development regulations to reflect site-specific and localized physical design.
Standards and codes were meant to bring order and safety to the city building process. But now, Ben-Joseph argues, these accumulated rules and their widespread application illustrate a disconnect between the original rationale for their existence and their actual effect on the natural and human environment. To discover how this separation of codes from local conditions came about, he looks at the origins of urban standards and their use, from early civilization through the rapid urbanization of the nineteenth century. He provides examples that demonstrate how standards have shaped residential developments and reshaped the natural landscape. And he considers alternatives for the future -- innovation and de facto deregulation by private developers, new design technologies, and place-based regulations reflecting local conditions. Standards, writes Ben-Joseph, will continue to shape the built environment, but they must be flexible enough to allow for innovation and contribute to the development of sustainable and desirable communities.

How stars are formed and their ultimate fate........1999-06-13
This is another book in Isaac Asimov's excellent "New Library of the Universe" series that serves as a supplementary text for the introduction of astronomy for young children. This volume is filled with beautiful photographs of stars and discusses the life and ultimate fate of different types of stars. The book is an update and revision by Francis Reddy of Isaac Asimov's "The Birth and Death of Stars" (1988). Asimov had passed away in 1992.
Product Description
The Life and Death of Stars presents a coherent picture of the birth, growth, middle age, and sometimes violent death of stars, showing that these different manifestations represent stars in different stages of their life cycles. This is a drama played out over unimaginable distances, involving esoteric concepts of nuclear chemistry, relativity, and quantum mechanics. Its discovery involved the greatest minds of modern astronomy, years of painstaking accumulation of data, and quick, brilliant leaps of intuition. And it is a story full of import for humanity, because the very elements we and all living entities are made of were created in the fiery deaths of stars that were born and passed away long before our sun was formed. With hundreds of illustrations in full color and black and white, the latest NASA satellite photographs, and unique charts and diagrams prepared especially for this book.
