I have never forgotten this book.......2007-06-16
OK, so this book is more fiction than fact, atleast as it pertains to this one case, since it's a composite story. So, as a work of fiction I think it's phenomenal. I randomly picked this book in highschool off the library shelf. I was interested in becoming a social worker at that time in my life. The story was moving, horrifying, and will make you angry.
It's hard to believe these things still happen, and we live in a society when this form of abuse is not uncommon.
The story might horrify you, but it will move you, and inspire you as well. I decided later in life that I did not have what it takes to be a social worker. I know I could not leave work, and leave behind the children whose lives have been broken. I think it would destroy my life, as I would never be able to seperate or detach myself from them. This book always stayed with me, and I never forgot it. The folks who do the work of Mrs. Craig are nothing other than heroes!
Courageous People.......2003-06-15
I loved this book. Ms. Craig is a dedicated and caring human being who does not give up. Nellie, Matt's mother,who was in extremely difficult straits, had the courage to begin to trust another person, in order to help her son.
An interesting read..........2002-12-16
...but as has been stated here, how much of it is true is unknown. That does take away from the effectiveness of the story, but it is still an interesting look into the work of social work and "the system" used (or not used) when dealing with difficult children and their families.
The character of Nellie will effectively enrage you with her inept manner of "parenting", which serves to further illustrate one of the points of this book, which is that the system and its individual workers can only do so much.
Eleanor Craig, as the author of this work, seems to be trying to take on the niche carved out by Torey Hayden in the portrayal of disturbed children, although Ms. Hayden's works have never had the "composite of many cases" disclaimer attached, adding to the real-life drama of her work.
From other reviews I have read, this is definitely not one of Ms. Craig's better works (I picked it up at a second-hand shop) but her others are more read-worthy. I look forward to checking them out even if just for comparison's sake.
HOW MUCH CAN WE READERS BELIEVE?.......2001-01-28
The author claims that "Matt," the central figure in this story is a composite of more than one client. If so, how much truth is in the account of this allegedly feral child who runs naked and wild through his home, defecates at will in the basement, screeches at people and throws feces at visitors? Matt's mother is illiterate and often confuses words, e.g. she calls a "diagram" a "diaphragm" and the author "Keggie" instead of Ms. Craig.
Matt has a kitestring of diagnoses, all of which the author appears to tax on his overwhelmed mother and stern father. Later in the story, it comes out the man is really Matt's stepfather and Matt's mother had other children who were taken into custody.
If a "Matt" ever existed, how much of this account is factual? As the other reviewer noted, mental illness have a biochemical/neurological base. Abuse and neglect compound any problems, but these twin evils don't necessarily cause neurological impairment....
Fiction, not fact.......1999-02-03
The book ostensibly presents a case history of a child who is variously described as autistic, schizophrenic, and retarded, who is rescued by the therapist author from his simultaneously over-protective and neglectful mother. It's unclear whether she believes that his mother caused all his problems or was merely exacerbating them (one can only hope the latter for the author's sake, given that autism and childhood schizophrenia are both known to be wholly neurological, but the title seems to imply the former).
The book only reveals in very very small print that it's "a composite of a number of cases of the problems faced by the social service and medical profession in the diagnosis, treatment, and development of capabilities of such children" (i.e. this didn't actually take place).

Book Description
Quang X. Pham’s A Sense of Duty, the first book written by a former Vietnamese refugee who became a U.S. Marine, is an affecting memoir about fate, hope, and the aftermath of the most divisive war America has fought. It is both a heartfelt salute to the spirit of America and a recounting of a son’s reunion with his long absent father, himself a devoted officer who saw combat firsthand.
In 1964, Hoa Pham, a South Vietnamese fighter pilot, was shot down by Viet Cong antiaircraft fire while supporting American forces. Rescued by an American helicopter after crash-landing, he returned home briefly to witness the birth of his son, Quang, before rejoining the fight against the Communists.
Just before the fall of Saigon, Hoa made sure that his wife and children escaped Vietnam. He himself was not so lucky. In a rush to help relatives flee the chaos, Hoa was captured by Communist troops and subsequently imprisoned for more than a decade in reeducation camps.
Twelve years later, after gaining his citizenship and graduating from UCLA, Quang enlisted in the U.S. Marines to serve his country as his father had served his. Though part of the victorious effort to free the Kuwaitis from Saddam Hussein in the first Gulf War, he could not shake off the feelings of guilt and inadequacy associated with his “refugee complex.”
When father and son at last reunited, Hoa’s revelations about his wartime experience left Quang even more conflicted about his service in the Marines. But after years of struggling to reconnect with each other and the homeland they left behind, Quang and his gravely ill father set out on a final and profound quest–to make sense of the war in Vietnam.
A Sense of Duty traces Quang’s uniquely spirited yet agonizing journey from the Vietnam War to the Gulf War, from his experiences as an uprooted refugee to his becoming a combat aviator, and his many incarnations in between. It reveals the turmoil of a family torn apart and reunited by the fortunes of war. It is an American journey like no other.

More Than Just A Coming Of Age Story For a Vietnamese Refugee. .......2006-10-31
The book "A Sense Of Duty: My Father, My American Journey" is really an American story about coming of age and about father son relationships but with a huge twist of circumstances. We are dealing with a family torn apart by the loss of the Vietnam War and their subsequent separation. Author Quang X. Pham is shipped to the USA after the fall of Saigon with his siblings and mother. His father who is a member of the South Vietnamese Air Force stays behind doing his duty to the very end. Thus begins 12 years of imprisonment in the so called "re-education camps" while his family adjusts to a new life in America.
The author deals with cultural and language issues and some degree of racism and bigoted treatment. However, the deeper issue for him is not having his father there for him. There is also his lack, at that young age, to fully realize the significance of what his father had done with his life and how well he had served his old country. The book is an eye opener for those of us who have wondered what it was like for these new comers to our shores.
When his father does come to the USA after being released from the "camps" he found it tough going. His marriage fell a part and he found that all those lost years with his children, who had grown up without him, haave created a huge gap between them. His children do not really know or understanding who is or even who he was.
The book follows the growing appreciation and understandings that Quang eventually gains for his dad. As he learns more about his father's past and sees his personal courage and sense of duty and what drove him to become the man he was. When the author himself wears the uniform of Marine aviator and fights in the Gulf War, he begins to gain more insights on the sacrifices that his dad had made for his own country of South Vietnam. We take this spiritual and emotional journey with the author as he gradually begins to sense what factors and motives drove his father on his own personal journey.
The book also details and addresses some old history from that time period and that war. Most Americans have either forgotten or never knew about our national attitudes and polices with regard to the war and lack of regard for our allies the South Vietnamese. It may make for some interesting but uncomfortable reading.
It is a well-written and poignant story that embraces two very different wars. His story unites two different generations into an emotional bridge between father and son. It is touching and deeply moving. The author does a great job of making the reader feel a part of the experience. This book receives the Military Writer's Society of America's highest book rating of FIVE STARS!
This book also receives my personal endorsement!
A Good Book.......2006-10-10
As a Vietnamese American, I could personally relate to this book. Coming to a new land, and given the opportunities to have a better life, comes with the price of a somewhat fractured family. The struggle to becoming American, and at the same time remaining a Vietnamese, is very difficult, especially while growing up as a young boy. Also, to admire your father, but at the same time, not really knowing him, is a constant test of love. The author's willingness to expose his personal thoughts in the book are very real and insightful. I think that's hard to do, but if done right, it really allow others to understand.
A Sense of Duty.......2006-09-28
Mr. Pham is one of the few authors who understands the Vietnam war correctly. He and his dad lived through it. His story of coming to America as a refugee, without a father, to becoming a U.S. Marine officer is inspiring. It brings out the best of him, and the best of the United States, his home. I don't think any country on this planet can offer the same opportunities. He is right: good thing that his mom did not settle his family in France, we would not have had this great book to enjoy. Way to go, America! This book will make you laugh and cry, unless you don't have a heart. It makes Richard Gere's An Officer and Gentleman a walk in the park.
Three tours in Vietnam.......2006-07-29
Thank you for writing A Sense of Duty. Along with Bernard Fall's Street Without Joy, they are the only books I know of that are worthy of the people of South Vietnam. I know of no movies that are other than trash." -Brigadier General Jack Quinn, U.S. Army (Retired)

Forensic Hypnosis: The Practical Application of Hypnosis in Criminal Investigations
ASIN: 1572300086 |
Book Description
In this volume, Kevin McConkey and Peter Sheehan draw from their extensive research to examine the use of hypnosis in criminal investigation. In addition to exploring the reliability of hypnotically recovered memory, this book covers a broad range of other significant technical, clinical, ethical, and legal issues\m-\including the inadequacy of current guidelines for research and practice, and the ethical concerns professionals must deal with when using hypnosis in criminal investigation. Written for a broad professional audience, this volume explicitly illustrates the complexities involved in using hypnosis in forensic settings and lays the groundwork for more carefully drawn guidelines in this area of professional practice.
The book opens with an illuminating overview of the use of hypnosis in criminal investigation, focusing in particular on its use with witnesses and victims of crime. Early on, the authors set forth the guidelines they developed based on their extensive experience and the available psychological and legal literature on the subject. They then examine specific court cases, showing how each illustrates a different use of forensic hypnosis. Although the cases are set in Australia, each was chosen on the basis of its relevance to any forensic system worldwide, and the book takes care to reference literature in the world arena. Topics elucidated by the case studies include:
* The impact of hypnosis on legal procedures
* Qualifications of the hypnotist
* Admissibility of hypnotic evidence
* Consistency of memory reports
* Possibility of deception
* Role of motivation and emotion in recall
* Rights of participants
The book explores the controversial and murky area of hypnotically refreshed memory, presenting specific strategies for dealing with reports of recovered memories of abuse.
The final chapters address some of the essential pragmatics of working within a system that can place many different demands on professionals. The authors discuss the major implications of their research, offering cogent recommendations for practice.
Customer Reviews:
Scholarly, insightful, and engaging.......2003-07-23
This book is almost unique in that it provides an in-depth analysis of some important cases that have strongly shaped Australian legal views about hypnotically elicited testimony. Long before the recovered memory debate broke in either the US or Australia, these authors (and their colleagues overseas, such as Martin Orne and Campbell Perry) were considering the pros and cons of using hypnosis in a forensic context. Readers who don't tolerate ambiguity and who are looking for black and white answers may come away from this book believing that it has nothing clear to say to them. But forensic hypnosis is a sometimes messy business. These authors do a fine job of analysing some fascinating cases, summarising the (then) latest findings from the laboratory, and highlighting important ethical issues (e.g., who is the primary client when hypnosis is used in the legal system? the police who request it or the witness, the victim, or (more rarely) the suspect being hypnotised). These are not easy issues. The authors grapple with them via an excellent tour of some gripping cases; there are verbatim transcripts, detailed analysis of how memories were influenced by the hypnotic procedures, and the outcomes of trials (where relevant). The authors are not vitriolic advocates of one point of view over another. Rather, their tone is measured, considered, and ultimately compelling. I use this text in a number of courses that I teach, both to postgraduate students of forensic psychology and continuing education students (health care professionals seeking qualifications in the use of hypnosis). Along with Laurence & Perry's (1988) Hypnosis, Will, & Memory, this is one of my favourite texts.
Medicore and less than thorough........1998-10-30
This is a reasonable, but not a strong book. Interesting cases are discussed, but their review is far from thorough.

Book Description
A lively portrait of a tumultuous period replete with conflict and strife, political intrigue and shifting alliances, assassinations and coronations.
Emma, one of England's most remarkable queens, made her mark on a nation beset by Viking raiders at the end of the Dark Ages, a period often neglected by conventional history. At the center of a triangle of Anglo-Saxons, Vikings, and Normans all jostling for control of England, Emma was a political pawn who became a power broker and an unscrupulous manipulator. By birth a Norman, Emma spent the majority of her life on English soil. She was married to two kings of England and outlived both; she was twice driven into exile; while mourning the untimely loss of one son, she was devastated by the murder of another; she saw two of her sons crowned; she was stripped of her powers when her eldest son became king; and she eventually retired from public life as a dowager queen whose land and wealth had been restored. Regarded by her contemporaries as a generous Christian patron, a regent admired by her subjects, and a Machiavellian mother, Emma was, above all, a survivor: hers was a life marked by dramatic reversals of fortune.
Customer Reviews:
VERY INTERESTING. IT MEET MY NEEDS. .......2007-06-05
There are a couple of facts we need to remember when reading this particular book. First, and this is important, it, the book, is not a Doctorial Thesis and it is not written as such. This is a popular historical work, meant to inform, but at the same time, to entertain. Secondly, I too, like a couple of other reviewers, was a bit disappointed that more was not written about the main character, Emma, her personal life, etc. This leads to the second fact we must remember. Source documents from this era, in particular personal histories, are very, very hard to come by. Most documents from this time have simply disappeared, have been destroyed, or are lost in some historical black hole. This being said and this being remembered, as the book is being read, might help.
The author has given us a fascinating look into the life and politics during the latter part of the first century. A very troubled time for England, and indeed, most of Europe. True, she, the author, does not go into the depth of her subject as many of us would like, but as I have stated, the author had very few source documents of refer to. This work is done in the "popular mode," and is quite readable. The author has taken great pains to let us know when she is stating documented facts and when she drifts into the realm of speculation. This is important to understand what the author is trying to do. I found the author's style far from dry, considering the subject matter. Queen Emma was indeed a complex and fascinating woman and the author has gone to great lengths to bring this across.
This is one of those book I like to call a "tickler," or "seed book." It gives information to those who are interested in a subject, but not fanatical about it. My primary interest is in New World History, but I do like to know where we came from. Works such as this give me as much information as I need for my purposes. Granted, if I were doing a research paper, or was extremely interested in the subject, I would indeed want more. As it stands though, this work gave me a wonder glance into those days and times. Now that I have this information, I find I do have an interest and this work has "tickled" me into checking other works out. This is a good thing. Perhaps one day I could land a nice juicy government grant, travel to England, and check out some of the source documents myself. Would not that be fun!
All in all, I found the work to be very well done, enjoyable to read and quite helpful. I do recommend this one for any individual interested in those days and times and the Queen Emma.
High quality popular history-biography.......2007-06-04
Emma of Normandy was the daughter of Richard I and his Danish "handfast" wife, Gunnor, whose origins are obscure. She married Aethelred II of England, was widowed, and married the Danish invader, Canute the Great the next year. One of her sons by each husband subsequently ruled England. She also became the mother-in-law of Henry III of Germany and was the great-aunt of William the Conqueror. But Emma wasn't the typical royal spouse. She learned how to wield power, played an expert political game, and suffered the failings of greed and scandal. Because of her wide and deep connections between the conquering Danes and Normans and the conquered English, this lively, well-written volume is more than a biography. Though the author is a journalist rather than an academic, she has produced a popular history with thorough source citations that is well worth the reading.
The Title Contains the Name EMMA, But Where's EMMA??.......2007-06-02
If you like Medieval history and the history of continuous Viking raids on England, maybe you'll find this book enjoyable. For me, it was a huge disappointment. The author appears to have no concrete evidence about Queen Emma's public or private life, reign, whereabouts during specific periods in British history, children, marriages, or anything else surrounding the book's main topic. Although a short read, it is dry and without enthusiasm. The book's main subject, Emma, is incidental throughout the entire "biography." Emma happened to be the English queen during Viking raids and that's about it. There is plenty of guess-work on the part of the author about what Emma might have done, might have seen, might have said or read, but there's nothing solid or concrete. There are, however, some interesting insights into Medieval life at the time of Emma's reign but that's about it.
Very enjoyable -- could have been deeper.......2006-12-23
The century or two leading up to the Norman Conquest is a favorite historical period for me, and I've read a number of books balanced roughly on the fulcrum of the year 1000, give or take. And Ms. O'Brien's was a very worthwhile addition to them. Like another reviewer, though, I wished for more on Emma -- or Aelfgifu as the Anglo-Saxons called her. Still, the book was quite a worthwhile and well-written portrait of the times and the characters involved in those fateful years.
And I still say Harold got a raw deal. Arrow in the eye (at least, according to the Bayeux Tapestry) -- that's gotta hurt! ;)
Twice Crowned Queen; Twice a Queen Mother.......2006-12-11
It's clear that Emma didn't passively attain this distinction. How did she do it? The records for the era are hardly extensive, so the biographer has a lot of work to do.
O'Brien did the work and has produced a solid bio. I particularly liked the parts on how Emma commissioned her book and how the assigned monk may have constructed her spin on history. I also liked the chronological chart at the end which sets Emma and her time within not just a European timeline, but also a worldwide framework.
The amount of research that goes into a volume like this is to be respected, but I held back a star because the question of how Queen Emma made her comebacks is only technically answered. You do not get the feeling you understand Emma the way you come to understand the central characters in a Fraser or Weir biography.

This volume offers a unique, integrative perspective on the political and ecological processes shaping landscapes and resource use across the global North and South. Twelve carefully selected case studies demonstrate how contemporary geographical theories and methods can contribute to understanding key environment-and-development issues and working toward effective policies. Topics addressed include water and biodiversity resources, urban and national resource planning, scientific concepts of resource management, and ideas of nature and conservation in the context of globalization. Giving particular attention to evolving conceptions of nature-society interaction and geographical scale, an introduction and conclusion by the editors provide a clear analytical focus for the volume and summarize important developments and debates in the field.

Customer Reviews:
Informative book, goo read........2007-01-03
A good book for folks wanting to learn about our night-time visitors. Well worth buying.
Wonderful book!.......2003-07-31
I bought this book just because I was curious about bats. I had always thought they were "bad", until I visited a conservatory in Wyoming that had a bat house and explained how important they are. That was a surprise to me.
This book opened my eyes to how beneficial bats really are. It talks about the facts, myths and misconceptions about bats... what's true, what's not. It tells what to do if a bat comes into your house, and how to evict them if they have taken up residence in your attic or somewhere else you don't want them to be.
The book is well-written and an "easy" read. It has lots of good photos, and tells about some of the different species of bats and where they live. I recommend it for older children (maybe 10 and up) and adults. Well worth the money.
Merlin Tuttle: America's Neighborhood Bats.......2002-10-05
This is a very informative, well wriiten and beautifully photographed book on bats. The book includes beautiful color photographs of the most commonly seen bats in America. One of the most appreciated sections is the "Beginners' Key To American Bats", a well written, easy to comprehend section on identifying common bats of the region and placing them in their proper groups. Very important if you intend to build bat houses and hope to attract occupants and just general knowledge.
The book includes several other interesting chapters besides identification. It shows how bats navigate with radar. It addresses the many negative myths of bats, it explains how beneficial bats are in nature. If you want or need to know anything at all about these interesting creatures, THIS is the book and Merlin Tuttle is the expert to seek out. And even if you only need to know enough about bats to humanely evict them from your belfry, this book comes with even that information!
The author has dedicated his life to these interesting mammals. Even without knowing that fact, you can see from the entertaining way Mr Tuttle writes, how much he cares. All of his books are excellent. Check them all out!
A great, informative book.......1998-10-09
Dr. Tuttle has set out to redeem the reputation of the bat clan and if people would just read this book I believe he would succeed. This book is packed with information that will help dispel the fear and misunderstanding with which people view bats, but at the same time it is by no means too technical to be readily understood (I first read it when I was about fourteen iirc and enjoyed it as much then as I do now.) I would recommend this book to anyone anywhere who is the least bit interested in nature and also to anyone who is fearful or concerned about bats in their nieghborhood.

Book Description
The Subject of Violence is a critical investigation of violence and its subjectifying capacities. It both relies on and explores the work of Hannah Arendt. At its background are feminist concerns, but also concerns with violence that press against the feminist problematic and push its boundaries. The book's main project is ethico-political understanding and, therefore, it is also about finding an ethico-political language for violence that escapes the standard idioms in which violence is spoken.
