Book Description

When the American Civil War broke out in 1861 both Confederate and Union experts decided that specialized sharpshooter units should be formed. These highly trained marksmen served in a front-line role and, due to the technological developments of the 1850s, were equipped with weapons that could guarantee greater accuracy over increased range than traditional muskets. This title examines the recruitment, training, tactics and deployment of sharpshooters from both sides of the conflict. It also takes a close look at the specialized personal weaponry of the sharpshooter, the rifle and its accoutrements, as well as the sharpshooters' unique insignia and identification patches.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite Osprey titles..........2007-03-05

This book covers training, combat, uniforms, weapons and tactics of Union and Confederate sharpshooters. The plates are great especially Berdan's Sharpshooters at Gettysburg. Any Civil War fan will enjoy this book!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to the Civil War's elite soldiers.......2004-10-08

This is a great summary of the role of sharpshooters in the American Civil War. It has a list of the different sharpshooter units of both Union & Confederate armies, b & w photos of artifacts including a James Morgan target rifle, a Colt revolving rifle, a Sharps rifle, 1858 Enfield rifled muskets, & thankfully, an 1863 Whitworth, the preferred choice of the Confederate sharpshooters. I've been a Civil War buff since the age of seven & two of my ancestors were Confederate sharpshooters: Pvt. David B. Forehand, Co. C, 1st Bn. Georgia Sharpshooters, & Pvt. Jeptha Forehand, Co. B, 17th Bn. Alabama Sharpshooters. Both served honorably throughout the war in the Army of Tennessee. This book has eight pages of color illustrations, including one of a soldier of Georgia's 1st Bn. Sharpshooters. While only 64 pages long, this book is highly recommended to all Civil War buffs. For a more in-depth look at Union sharpshooters, I recommend Wiley Sword's "Sharpshooter: Hiram Berdan, His Famous Sharpshooters, & Their Sharps Rifles". Books on Confederate sharpshooters are few & far between, but I recommend "Diary of a Confederate Sharpshooter: the Life of James Conrad Peters" as well as "Georgia Sharpshooter: the Civil War Diary & Letters of William R. Montgomery".

"These essays are valuable first forays into the history of prosthetics."
    — Technology and Culture

From the wooden teeth of George Washington to the Bly prosthesis, popular in the 1860s and boasting easy uniform motions of the limb, to today's lifelike approximations, prosthetic devices reveal the extent to which the evolution and design of technologies of the body are intertwined with both the practical and subjective needs of human beings.

The peculiar history of prosthetic devices sheds light on the relationship between technological change and the civilizing process of modernity, and analyzes the concrete materials of prosthetics which carry with them ideologies of body, ideals, body politics, and culture.

Simultaneously critiquing, historicizing, and theorizing prosthetics, Artificial Parts, Practical Lives lays out a balanced and complex picture of its subject, neither vilifying nor celebrating the merger of flesh and machine.

    Book Description

A provocative new biography of the man who forged America's alliance with the Iroquois

William Johnson was scarcely more than a boy when he left Ireland and his Gaelic, Catholic family to become a Protestant in the service of Britain's North American empire. In New York by 1738, Johnson moved to the frontiers along the Mohawk River, where he established himself as a fur trader and eventually became a landowner with vast estates; served as principal British intermediary with the Iroquois Confederacy; command British, colonial, and Iroquois forces that defeated the French in the battle of Lake George in 1755; and created the first groups of "rangers," who fought like Indians and led the way to the Patriots' victories in the Revolution.

As Fintan O'Toole's superbly researched, colorfully dramatic narrative makes clear, the key to Johnson's signal effectiveness was the style in which he lived as a "white savage." Johnson had two wives, one European, one Mohawk; became fluent in Mohawk; and pioneered the use of Indians as active partners in the making of a new America. O'Toole's masterful use of the extraordinary (often hilariously misspelled) documents written by Irish, Dutch, German, French, and Native American participants in Johnson's drama enlivens the account of this heroic figure's legendary career; it also suggests why Johnson's early multiculturalism unraveled, and why the contradictions of his enterprise created a historical dead end.

    4 out of 5 stars A Great Irish-British-American.......2007-01-18

William Johnson may be the greatest colonial American in our history. Had there been no revolution, or had the British won, he would be remembered with the esteem we now reserve for "founding fathers". Johnson proved himself a giant in three arenas. First he made a fortune in the fur trade and parlayed his wealth into vast real estate. The Iroquois preferred to deal with him because he respected them, didn't cheat and kept his promises. Secondly, Johnson became a master diplomat. For most of the 18th century, he kept the six Iroquois tribes pro-British and important allies in the French and Indian War. Thirdly, Johnson was a valiant commander in that war, winning the Battle of Lake George, capturing Fort Niagara and assisting in taking Montreal.

O'Toole's book is especially good at bringing out the diplomatic history.
In fact, if you are thinking of joining the Foreign Service, Johnson has left a record that is still of use today. One can learn what it takes to negotiate with a non-Western, non-progressive people who are given to barbarism and who control extensive natural resources.

O'Toole is Irish and never misses any nuances regarding Johnson's heritage. Such an approach is unusual, but does give clues to the man's psychology. What I hoped to find, but did not, were numerous anecdotes and personal asides revealing the fascinating character that was William Johnson. Alas, the 18th century collected little trivia. Still it's a worthwhile read.

    5 out of 5 stars Sir Paradox.......2006-12-03

Once I started reading, I found this book hard to put down. It is about a paradoxical man and a fascinating period of history.

Unlike some reviewers, I thought the references to Irish history were a logical link to understanding William Johnson's identity and actions. In the process, I also learned something about Irish history.

3 out of 5 stars My Hero .......2006-08-13

I confess that I was waiting for this book for a long time. By my own admission, William Johnson is probably my biggest hero in Colonial America and his death probably changed the way the revolution in NY turned out (a feared loyal citizen soldier many who rose against his sons would not have done so against him).

This book though left me bored in spots. I find no reason for the author's constant attempt at apologizing for Johnson's conversion to being Protistant nor do I care much about the break down of Irish land ownership. It was not until several chapters in that the book focused on William himself and his time in America.

If the book consitrated more on Johnson as an individual and less on Johnson the Irishman it would have been a better read to me. The most important contributions Johnson made was as a negotiator with the Natives and more time should have been spent building up to this.

I think the author has a great person to write about, but does not do Johnson proper justice. The author should stick more to Ireland and its history in future works. He shows a love of Ireland and its history and his time would be worth spending on that. Writing on Colonial American subject just did not hit home with me.

4 out of 5 stars Guy Johnson on cover?.......2006-04-02

The mystery is why an important book about Sir William Johnson has a picture of a relative and not him on the cover.

5 out of 5 stars The Many Worlds of William Johnson.......2006-03-12

It is refreshing to see a new biography of the fascinating giant of colonial America, Sir William Johnson, a figure who is both crucially important in American history and terribly neglected in the popular American imagination. Fintan O'Toole's book is not the definitive biography of Johnson - for that you need to read `Mohawk Baronet' by James Thomas Flexner. It does, however, cover ground not before fully explored. O'Toole focuses on Johnson's amazing ability to be a man of two worlds - fully integrated into the British imperial world while simultaneously wholly comprehending and moving effortlessly within the world and mindset of Native Americans. He explains this by examining Johnson's heritage and upbringing as the son of Irish Catholic Jacobites, a family that had to learn to survive under the hostile control of the Protestant British power.

O'Toole's book is really much more than a biography. It even goes beyond the scope of its subtitle, which mentions Johnson's role in the invention of America. O'Toole spends so much time on examining the world of Catholic Jacobites in Ireland and Scotland, and explaining how they came to cope with their position of defeat and banishment, that this book is almost as much a study on that lost world as it is of Johnson's life. It is perhaps the best book that I have seen for showing just what impact these defeated Jacobites had on the formation of America.

Sir William Johnson is arguably second only to George Washington in his significance to the early history and formation of the United States of America, and he is second to none in his personal story and colorfulness. This book adds to the literature already available by fleshing out what it was that made this amazing man tick. If you have already read Flexner's definitive biography of Johnson, you will still gain much from reading this one.

This book should appeal to anyone with an interest in colonial American history, the Iroquois Confederation, and the French and Indian War. It should likewise appeal to anyone interested in Irish history, particularly as it applies to the last days of Jacobite culture and diaspora - highly recommended.

      5 out of 5 stars Never Forget.......2007-03-25

Have you ever listened to any war stories from a family member, or friend? I have, and I have a few of my own. This book is a collect of war stories from the various members of the Green Berets, in their own words. All of the stories were from the Vietnam war during the 60s and early 70s. Some of these stories were very sad, but at the same time, very heroic. A lot of the stores were scary, especially during some of the patrols these guys had to do. There's also a quite a few funny stories that will make you smile, especially if you were in the service. I really liked the stories that were kind of spooky, there was one story that involved a SF patrol that bed down for the night. During the night, it was so dark an enemy patrol had mistaken the SF patrol for one of their own, and decided to bed down in the same area as the SF patrol! Crazy stuff! This is a book dedicated to the men of the Green Berets.

5 out of 5 stars I was fascinated by the authenticity of the book........1998-08-30

As a former Special Forces medic in Viet Nam I could not put this book down until I had finished it. I got out of the Army in 1966 and didn't look back, but I could never get Viet Nam and Special Forces out of my blood. It was truely a calling that I failed to hear.

I was surprised to read about many people that I had long forgotten, but there they were again, as big and true to life as if it was yesterday.

There was even a story about the little sleepy camp, Polie Kleng, that I had helped build in 1966 (A-241), and of course there were lots of stories about Dak To, Kontum, Pleiku, Na Trang, Saigon and other places I had been.

I have always wondered what my life would have been like if I had made a career of Special Forces. Now I know. There is a good chance I would have gotten zapped, but it sure would have been an exciting life while it lasted, and I would have had an endless supply of the greatest friends in the world. I have never had those kinds of truely great friends since getting out of Special Forces.

This book tells it all, just as it was. Get ready for a lot of flash backs. Every word of it is true. Even the lies are true!

5 out of 5 stars A human-eye view of the war, from those who endured it........1998-08-09

I grew up during the Viet Nam war, in a military family. I joined the Army immediately after college and was the first woman commissioned at my University, in 1975. While I never served in combat, I knew many who did. I read this book to try and understand what it must have been like for the men who served, without having to read through the filters of the liberal media, or the continuing lies of our government.

Being from a military family, I understand what duty, honor and country means, and to me, the Green Berets are some of last, true defenders of those ideals. This book did not disappoint me.

It is a wonderful book, with all the elements of life, both precious and horrible, woven through it.

My favorite story was of the POV and how his faith in God was restored by a fir tree and some fire-flies. He does work in mysterious ways!

To my brothers-in-arms--my heartfelt thanks for sharing parts of your souls with the rest of us.

To those who are stil! l unaccounted for--forgive us. I, for one, shall never forget you.

      5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......1998-07-31

As a fellow Green Beret, I found Hans Halbertstadt's book very refreshing. It is free of the bravado and hype found in most books regarding Special Forces. What it shows is the real face of war a told by the unique and courageous men who fought it. You'll laugh out loud after reading one page and cry after reading the next. I highly recommend it!

4 out of 5 stars A "MUST HAVE" for Cabinet Restoration.......2000-01-20

This paperback book is very helpful to antique furniture buffs and to anyone curious about an American homemaker's lifestyle in 1900-1930. It provides an excellent overview with a narrative on these large free-standing kitchen cabinets. Made famous by Hoosier Manufacturing Company, the cabinet style was also offered in similar models by other companies. Philip D. Kennedy has included black&white photographs plus sketches from sales literature and national magazine ads of the following companies: Hoosier, Sellers, Napanee (Coppes), McDougall, Boone and unknown manufacturers. Worth the price of the book alone is Chapter 8: "Restoring Hoosier Cabinets". This chapter offers step-by-step tips, photos of the process and inspiration with examples of the success of others who have restored -- plus close-up photos of hardware and metal side brackets. This book was a most helpful resource as I planned restoration of a 1914-era Napanee Dutch Kitchenet previously used in my great-grandfather's farm kitchen! The only reason I didn't give it "5 stars" was because the photos were not "professional" quality (some are a bit blurred but still helpful).
