Book Description
How do ordinary people respond to prolonged terror? The convulsion of Japan's "Warring States" period between 1467 and 1568 destroyed the medieval order and exposed the framework of an early modern polity. Mary Elizabeth Berry investigates the experience of upheaval in Kyoto during this time.
Using diaries and urban records (extensively quoted in the text), Berry explores the violence of war, misrule, private justice, outlawry, and popular uprising. She also examines the structures of order, old and new, that abated chaos and abetted social transformation.
The wartime culture of Kyoto comes to life in a panoramic study that covers the rebellion of the Lotus sectarians, the organization of work and power in commoner neighborhoods, the replotting of urban geography, and the redefinition of authority and prestige in the arena of play.
Customer Reviews:
Intriguing.......2006-03-05
The writer takes an interesting approach to history, looking for oddities in the historical record and then thinking them through. The result is she brings alive life in Kyoto during the diificult years of the 16th century.
Thorough and fascinating view of late-medieval Kyoto.......1998-03-25
This book is a bit of a paradox. Working with incomplete primary sources, Mary Elizabeth Berry has put together a remarkably textured and complete picture of Kyoto in the late Medieval period of Japan. The book examines the fate of 'classical' Kyoto, the political and economic changes of the time, and shows a view not commonly seen in historical Japan: that of the urban commoners who had to live underneath and among the Samurai. Well worth reading for anyone who wants a much better understanding of the period, and of Japanese history in general. The only things that keep the book from being perfect are Ms. Berry's tendency to repeat herself in order to emphasize a point, and a lack of good maps. It makes the book somewhat longer than it probably needs to be, and also somewhat dry. Best consumed in small chunks with time for reflection in between.

Book Description
This is the story of the other woman in Nelson's life - the woman who waited patiently year after year for him to return from the wars only to be cruelly rejected in favor of his mistress. Unlike the depiction of Fanny as cold and unresponsive by Nelson's biographers, this enthralling biography of his wife takes a close look at the hundred or so letters she wrote to him that reveal a woman of strong character; caring, warmhearted and sympathetic, with a keen sense of humor and a deep and abiding love for her husband.
Customer Reviews:
This account of the great lady was long overdue........2006-03-13
Most people will acknowledge that Nelson was a great man. Great because of his achievements in the field of naval conflict. Few, however, would agree that that same great man had no faults at all. One of his greatest faults was the way in which he treated his most loving and devoted wife - a wife who never complained, but a wife who was almost destroyed by those historical accounts which seek to blacken her name if only to show Nelson as being perfect.
Sheila Hardy has a clear grasp and understanding of English and History and reading this work soon became a real pleasure - something for which she deserves great credit. In telling the story of the life of Nelson's wife, the author sets out to enable Frances Nelson to take her rightful place at Nelson's side. This is neither anything to do with female emancipation nor is it an attempt to blacken Nelson at the hands of someone who is more interested in women's lib than in historical fact.
Prior to Trafalgar Nelson was already a hero. When he died, he became more than a hero, he became a legend. Not only was he afforded a status in which he could do no wrong, but he did so in a country where no wrong would be entertained on his behalf. In short, If Nelson had forsaken his wife - then it must have been her fault, and history went on to record those faults even though many of them simply never existed.
Had she been the wife of an ordinary carpenter or shop-keeper, the wrongs visited on Frances Nelson would not have been important. But, for as long as the story of Nelson the hero continues, so will the existence of this noble lady. After 200 years, it is time to set the record straight and reveal the warm, loving, caring and very wronged lady she was. That doesn't make Nelson any less a hero - it simply shows that he was also a human being as well.

Book Description
In The Hebrew Bible and Science, Dr. Harry Hafner has undertaken a unique and difficult task: to create a digest to the Hebrew Bible that offers illumination and a scientific comparison and interpretation of this difficult work. The book uses a rigorous set of scientific standards to analyze The Hebrew Bible from an ethical-moral, scientific, social and historical viewpoint. Dr. Hafner has coupled painstaking research with a wide-ranging inquiry to produce this comprehensive resource.
Meant for the faithful, the atheist, and anyone in between, The Hebrew Bible and Science covers an astonishing amount of ground, using science to generate a wholly new look at an ancient text. After setting forth a group of definitions and demonstrations easy to follow by the layman reader, the book goes on to discuss the nature of Judaism in a social context and to analyze the text from a scientific standpoint, including close study of a plethora of topics from Genesis to a glimpse of Jewish Oppression.
The Hebrew Bible and Science is an extensive, impressive work, delineating difficult concepts in articulate prose. It is, perhaps, the only book that has seamlessly referenced the Ten Commandments as axioms for the backbone of the celebrated text and finds a surprising reason to include results from Quantum Mechanics in the same paragraph. Inspired by the memory of his late mother's unwavering belief, Dr. Hafner has intertwined science and the base of Jewish faith to create a unique work, and in doing so, sheds light on one of the most important religious works of our time.

Welcome to Lakewood, California, the world's largest suburb and the subject of an oddly mesmerizing account of its creation by D. J. Waldie. Waldie describes how bean fields were drawn up, sectioned off and divided up--leaving tracts for small houses of similar design. The author changes while the land around him does, in a story of how people make places and, more so, places make people.
Book Description
"Infinitely moving and powerful, just dead-on right, and absolutely original."Joan Didion
Since its publication in 1996, Holy Land has become an American classic. In "quick, translucent prose" (Michiko Kakutani, New York Times) that is at once lyrical and unsentimental, D. J. Waldie recounts growing up in Lakewood, California, a prototypical post-World War II suburb. Laid out in 316 sections as carefully measured as a grid of tract houses, Holy Land is by turns touching, eerie, funny, and encyclopedic in its handling of what was gained and lost when thousands of blue-collar families were thrown together in the suburbs of the 1950s. An intensely realized and wholly original memoir about the way in which a place can shape a life, Holy Land is ultimately about the resonance of choiceshow wide a street should be, what to name a parkand the hopes that are realized in the habits of everyday life. 20 illustrations and a new introduction for this paperback edition.
Customer Reviews:
excellent comprehensive Los Angeles History.......2007-05-13
In southern California, land and water were everything in the 20th century. The author did an excellent job researching the tract house expansion from the construction details to the social impact they had family lifestyles. Especially interesting, was the explantation of the water rights and development of Artesia. All the familiar landmarks of the LA basin suddenly take on new meaning.
Poetics of place and time in the Los Angeles Palimpsest.......2007-05-13
D. J. Waldie's Holy Land: a Suburban Memoir is so beautifully and carefully written that I found myself reading segments out loud for the simple pleasure of savoring the language. While writing of his life in a housing tract in Lakewood, California, Mr. Waldie, writing in short and interweaving passages and segments, examines his everyday life in an almost commonplace suburb with precision and grace. His family, neighbors and friends emerge as people we may know. His house has a familiarity to many of us, even though we have never been there. Mr. Waldie, however, sees everyday life so clearly and makes even the "how to" of putting together a stucco tract home so interesting that I could not put down this book and felt a great sadness when I had finished. His is a lovely and important story about a very smart and gentle man who cares deeply about aspects of Los Angeles history and is eager to hear stories of our Southern California future.
Wow! Great Book.......2006-07-02
I live in Lakewood with my husband and two (now grown) children. This book shares a lot of history that I was unaware of when we first moved here, and after reading it, I understand why Lakeood is as charming as it is. People stay here for generations. Parents live up the street from their children and their children's families. I have always loved it here and am very proud to call it "home".
a tour of a world very different than suburbs I know.......2004-11-01
When I read this book, I was surprised by not by how universal Lakewood is, but how little Lakewood resembles the suburbs I grew up with.
In Lakewood, most blocks have sidewalks, streets have grids so you can walk to anyplace without going out of your way, and conveniences such as shopping are a long walk away- not exactly New Urbanism, but not exactly conventional modern sprawl either. Lakewood may be sprawl, but it is sprawl with a human face.
By contrast, in Atlanta (where I grew up) sidewalks end about 3 or 4 miles from downtown, in subdivisions built at about the same time as Lakewood or even a few years either- and usually nothing is within walking distance of a suburban house, and even if it was the absence of sidewalks (or often of any other accommodation to pedestrians such as walkable lawns; the streets often go right up to the street) would make walking very dangerous indeed. Atlanta is sprawl without a human face. I think Atlanta is certainly more typical of the South.
Great fro Teaching.......2004-01-24
I taught this book as the last reading in an undergraduate course on Western suburban history. The students responded with tremendous enthusiasm. They recognized much that was familiar in Waldie's strange hometown (a strangeness common to suburbs all over the West). This book crystallized a feeling of loss for many students. Suburbs like Lakewood, or like the tract house developments going up today all over the region and nation, feel emptied of history for the children who grow up there. Their names (Lakewood?) like their green lawns are imposed, divorced from the land's human and natural history. Children feel this and they know something is missing. This book opened up the opportunity for students to express their own feelings and experiences of suburban life.
Note I also recommend you see the wonderful poetry of Kevin Hearle, _Each Thing We Know is Changed Because We Know It_ (1994)

Customer Reviews:
Reader beware.......2003-03-14
A glorified cut & paste job, replete with factual errors, clumsy paraphrasing and garbled information. In terms of the book's title, the central error is the continuation of the "first SEAL" myth first promulgated by this author and Roy Boehm. Boehm was not the first, nor did he originate SEAL teams. Readers seeking the documented facts should read the article "What A Tangled Web We Weave" by retired Navy Capt. David Del Giudice (1st CO, SEAL Team One) in the 2nd Quarter, 2002 BLAST, magazine of the UDT-SEAL Assn.
Otherwise, I would suggest that readers consult Sasser's bibliography and read the original works for required information.

Book Description
Bobwhite quail are one of America's favorite game birds. Because quail hunting can bring in valuable income, landowners and game managers value these birds and encourage them wherever the habitat is suitable.
Although biologists have studied bobwhites since the 1920s and have amassed an awesome base of information about this species, their knowledge has not been made widely available to landowners, hunters, and other lay readers.
Fred S. Guthery, one of the leading experts on bobwhite quail in the Southwest and southern Midwest, provides a wealth of useful and interesting information in this volume. He offers experiences and perspectives based on published research, along with a review of his well-known writings and insights from fifteen years of observation.
Guthery has concentrated most of his work on the Southwest, but this book provides information about all the areas that bobwhites inhabit and also includes information on the related species, Gambel's quail. Because the biology of quail and the principles of their management are very general, the information presented in this book will have application everywhere bobwhites are known.
Wildlife managers, landowners, hunters, and anyone else interested in ensuring that quail thrive on their property will find this an accessible and valuable contribution by a leader in the field.
Customer Reviews:
A valuable asset to quail hunters and managers.......2000-04-30
The book covers a variety of topics relating to bobwhites. Dr. Guthery does an excellent job of showing that many of the myths proposed about bobwhites are not backed up by any facts. The writing is not at a technical level, so the book is easily read and understood by a variety of audiences. A must for any quail enthusiest!
A must read for everyone interested in quail!.......2000-04-08
Wildlife managers, landowners, hunters and anyone else interested in ensuring bobwhites thrive on their property will find Dr. Fred Guthery's newest book, On Bobwhites, an invaluable resource.
The man known as "Mr. Bobwhite" has all the bases covered in his latest publishing endeavor. On Bobwhites provides a wealth of information in a single volume. If you could only have one book on the bobwhite quail, this should be that book. It is extremely well organized into four sections containing 55 short chapters, making it easy to check the table of contents and find reference to most any question on quail.

buyer beware.......2007-09-13
Most disappointed with "book" -- it was a poorly photocopied edition, bound with a plastic binder -- not even a good job at the copy shop. I expected at least a softbound book with a real cover for what I paid (and saw visually represented in the description.) When it says binding unknown, beware. This is simply a brief (40 approx) page report on very general quail habitat and cultivation -- much like a grad student thesis. I expected more information and text for the amount I paid. As I said before, read the fine print and buyer beware -- I've learned my lesson.

Book Description
How the Buenos Aires Ranch became not only a rallying point for multiple agendas in the "rangeland conflict" after its conversion to a wildlife refuge but also an expression of the larger shift from agricultural to urban economies in the Southwest. Sayre evaluates both sides of the controversy--from ranching's impact on the environment to environmentalism's sometimes misguided efforts at restoration--to address the complex and contradictory roles of ranching, endangered species conservation, and urbanization in the social and environmental transformation of the West.
Customer Reviews:
An intriguing and ground-breaking book.......2005-04-02
Sayre's book on ranching and endangered species uses a compact study area, the Altar Valley of Southern Arizona, to analyze various forms of human and 'natural capital.' The book is deep in the area's history, ecology and current resource management practices, and yet also steeped in theoretical arguments that make perfect sense given his overall argument. The Bobwhite Quail plays a central role in producing a landscape of "Nature" (big "N") that becomes the pivot-point for contemporary rural politics between ranchers, environmentalists, and federal agency workers. Really good research, and still accessible; kudos to the author.
