I was a painful load for myself, not to mention my family. Though they had been so kind to me, it was only for my being the support to them. I read this book (The Power of Positive Thinking), and I thank God for having bestowed in Dr. Peale so many blessings upon humanity. I quit drinking. I began to apply all the methods sugested in the book, specially that of reading from the Scripture before going to bed. I did this specially dedicated to my litle ones. The results were amazing; a lot of beautifull things have happened since then. There is no room here to tell you. I love God. I love Jesuschrist; I love His church and I love The Holy Spirit. May God permit all His creatures that longe for true life and happiness show His countenance to them. May my humble testimony serve others to feel encouraged to "Try and see that The Lord is good."

Stalag Luft III was one of the Germans' "escape-proof" prison camps, specially built by Hermann Göring to hold Allied troops. Some of them were involved in other daring escape attempts, including the famous Wooden Horse episode, also turned into a classic film, and the little-known Sachsenhausen breakout, engineered by five Great Escapers sent to die in the notorious concentration camp on Hitler's personal orders. Tragically, fifty of those involved in the Great Escape were murdered by the Gestapo. Others were recaptured; only a few made it all the way to freedom. This dramatic account of personal heroism is a testament to their ingenuity and achievement -- a stirring tribute to the men who never gave up fighting.

Good Information; Some Dubious Assertions.......2006-04-04

Most of the information presented herein has already been presented by earlier authors writing about the Great Escape. One unique feature of this book is the testimony of those 7 of the original 76 escapees who were still alive at the time of publication of this book (2004). Most of them believed, in retrospect, that the Great Escape had been worth it. But one of them opined that it was not worth the lives of the 50 who had been murdered by the Germans. The book has some unique photographs, and contains an extensive bibliography of books and other materials on the Great Escape.

Carroll provides good detail about the construction of the three openings (traps) of the tunnels Tom, Dick, and Harry. A group of Polish RAF officers who were engineers designed and built the traps. So cleverly were the traps constructed that the Germans found only one of them (Tom), and then only by accident and after numerous unsuccessful intensive searches.

The author Carroll makes some biased statements that detract from the otherwise excellent quality of the book. He claims, for instance, that the escaped POWs were engaging in espionage because the information they obtained was not all entirely related to their escape prospects, as they necessarily observed objects of military significance during their traverses through Germany and Germany-occupied territories. But, using such a loose definition of espionage, how could escaped POWs not be engaging in espionage? He also makes the ridiculous statement that Churchill wanted to "flatten every acre" of Germany, and brings up the destruction of Dresden in this regard. In actuality, Churchill expressed moral reservations about the conduct of Allied bombing following the Dresden firestorm, whose death toll at the time had been exaggerated several times over by German propaganda (an exaggeration which at times continues to this day). Carroll also claims that the shooting of POWs was a matter of concern to both Germans and Allies, but the murder of Jews was not. This is manifestly incorrect and Carroll, a historian, should know better. In fact, from the earliest days of the war, as German atrocities against Poles and then Jews began to mount, the eventual punishment of the German criminals had become one of the reasons for fighting the war.

The real story.......2006-03-21

I grew up watching the Great Escape with my father. I always liked the movie and considered it one of my top 10 favorite war movies. After reading Ghost Soldiers (about POWs in a Phillipine camp), I found this book.

The author starts out stating that he is merely attempting to tell the full story of the Great Escape and is in no way trying to discredit the movie version.

His approach is to use the information he gathered from many, many sources including survivors of the ordeal who are still living. He simply tells the real story and at no time criticizes the movie version.

As we all know, Hollywood has a tendency to distort an original story in an effort to increase profits. Its nice to know what really happened in Stalag Luft III and the events leading up to and after the Escape.

The author adds a reprint of the transcript of the war crimes trials where Herman Goring denies ever knowing about an order to kill escaped prisoners. Its a nice touch.

If you liked the movie and have any interest in WWII history, I recommend reading the full story about the Greatest Escape of all.

HUGE ERROR.......2007-05-20

Cleopatra was of the Ptolemaic dynasty, therefore she was of Greek descent. The family was in-bred, brother wed sister. She was Greek, certainly not Egyptian (black).

World's Great Men of Color Vol 1 and 2.......2006-09-13

I have owned both of these books for over 15 years. I have lectured at Harvard University, MIT, Umass Amherst, Amherst College and other places citing references from J.A. Rogers exhaustive research. He was greatly ahead of his time and any one of his books are worth their weight in gold. I am a self-taught historian and have been lecturing for 16 years now and consider J.A. Rogers' easy to read,informative style the best ever. He tells his readers about many Africans and others of African descent that achieved great feats while many Europeans were still in savagery. He discusses the first recorded Dr. Imhotep. Hatshepsut (Queen ruler who has a temple that still stands). Makeda, Clitus (General with Alexander the Great), King Taharqa (mentioned in the Bible) and many other great figures. I have all 14 of his books and would not trade one for a bar of gold. His research vastly improved my confidence in the achievement of Africans the world over that have been hidden from general knowledge for lifetimes. If anyone doubts the works of J.A. Rogers I would debate them any place using his research and embarrass you with the research you bring.

The great thing about his works are he just calmly states the facts without tearing any other race or civilization down. How many other works do that? Also with his vast research he could have berated many other races and civilizations, but chose not to waste his time and just stated the facts.

We all greatly benefit still from what he dedicated his life to!

Just say no to angry critics.......2006-05-23

The revisnist history, appears to come from ppl like this new orleans critic who doesnt know much about history or its remaining artifacts... The old kingdom and predynasty clearly shows so-called African negro's as the rulers of Egypt not the fantasy semitci nonsense born of 17th/18th western racist... As far as Cleopatra, there were quite a few Cleopatra's through different dynasty periods... of course one would know this if they cared to research properly... Also, Hannibal was always described as being a Afrikan... regardless of in mulatto traits... Its funny how europeans when they can't take Afrikans out of the area which would give us high regard, they must somehow convince others they would should be seen as sub-human, stock, negro, primitive, simple minded, etc... This is clearly white male dogma, since these particular white males are obviously suffering from a inferiority complex, [...] envy, etc.. which activates some defense mechanism within them as they can only see themselves in a competition with other males outside of their circles... Of course this also reflects on what most women desire as well... But, thats too obvious to point out...

Anyway, J.A. Rogers has done a excellent job of putting Afrikans back into the civilize arena where we belong... Of course any fool who would listen to the empty ramblings of angry insecure white males as being some say all authority of what is legit, needs a wake up call...

Notice that racism over a 2,000+ period has been the perpetration of white males or indo-aryans who try to justify such uncivilized behavior through their socio-political opinions, their empty spiritual system (religion), and psuedo-science of survival of the fittest... I guess the latter makes sense for these groups who have genetically undergone a mutated change do to hardship of having to survive with limited resources in areas that did not produce enough edible vegetation... Which led to heavy consumption of eating animals and stealing from others... a habit the europeans are still practicing... as a badge of honor... p.i

J.A. Roger's Best Book: A classic.......2002-04-23

Ahead of his time.......2001-10-23

JA Rodgers was ahead of his time when it came to historical reserch. He exposed alot of things that even in our xenophobic world we are afriad to talk about. He discovered through his reserch many of the great people of the past was infact blacks,and that they had been covered up by white wash over centuries. People should read these books with an open mind,because it explains alot in our soceity that are very race conscious people. I learned about Al Jahiz though him and he taught me about many great people I had never even heard of. I never knew about lokman the southern Arabian sage that was considered one of the wisest men. I never knew about the black vikings in this book called blaumen. The book also discussed how many people of the royal family have indeed black ancestry and how they have tried to hide these facts. Get this book to expose the truth and check out other JA Rodgers books.

The Bombers that Made History - A Great Companion Volume.......2001-12-27

This book echos the one liner "Fighter pilots make movies, bomber pilots make history."

Seldom do the pilots who made the history have the gift of communicating it to us through art, but Pacific B-17 pilot Paul Eckley's watercolor "Mareeba Maintenance" does just that.

The book serves as a tribute to the bomber aircrews of many nations who fought in WWII. The artwork is excellent. There is not a single mediocre painting reproduced in the book. I own other aviation art books that I cannot say that about... The selections show a variety of styles from a variety of artists. Far more than a collection of "airplane portraits" these paintings showcase aviation art as serious fine art, from landscapes and seascapes to compelling character studies. Among the the treats are the otherwise unpublished works that appear in this book- such as Bill Phillips' Martin B-26 Marauder "Flak Bait".

The text is entertaining and overall, acceptable. As others have already noted, the occasional small errors tend toward the obvious. It is unfortunate that no one noticed that precisely rendered Douglas A-26 Invaders were identified as A-20 Havocs in the manuscript. This is a small disappointment, and should not discourage you from enjoying the book.

For me "Bomber Missions" is an affordable way to enjoy some of the best bomber art ever produced. Paintings demand to be hung, prints insist on being framed, but the aviation art published in books rests comfortably on the shelf, ready to be enjoyed.

Last but not least, far too little mention has been made of the fact this book serves as the companion volume to "Flying Aces" containing WWII fighter aviation art. If you liked one, chances are you'll want the other.

Simply Fantastic!!!.......2001-07-31

One word can describe this book......AMAZING!.....This book has great art work of american, british, german, and japanese bomber planes, and some fighters. Most of the illustrations were based on actual events which took place in the air, and the illustrations make those events come alive. This book was definitely worth the price, and i would recomend it to any war buff, plane buff, or artist........either way, its a great book to have.

Father of modern Conservative Punditry.......2005-01-29

Irving Kristol has been declared by some to be the father of neo-conservatism. This is the same philosophical group that has gained such prominence of late in the Pentagon and Bush White House. The same group that Pat Buchanan claims are Liberals rotting away the core of Conservativism.

Neo-conservatives are said to be `Liberals who've been mugged'. Supposedly this awakens them from their idealist fantasies into the cold, hard world called reality. This book is pieced together from articles written by Kristol spanning over half a century on a wide range of topics. It quickly and sadly becomes clear that Kristol's ideas have had a HUGE influence on modern Conservative polemics. Many of his ideas echo in the words of Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, Sean Hannity, Michael Savage and many others. However unlike the members of that list of shame Irving Kristol generally manages to retain his dignity and not delve into the infantile behavior of his unfortunate emulators.

The book chronicles Kristol's journey from young Trotskyite to anti-communist liberal to just plain anti-liberal. I suppose once Communism began to fade Kristol needed to focus his dissatisfaction somewhere and he never forgave those liberals who worked as apologists for Stalin. Kristol also built up a high degree of animosity towards liberals during the radical era of the sixties.

I do recommend this book for anyone interested in learning about where today's Conservative pundits got their ideas from. It certainly makes Limbaugh and crew look far less creative. Kristol also has a much better writing style and a much wider array of interests than today's Conservative writers and if liberals can get past some of Kristol's more distasteful and sometimes pompous views they may even find themselves agreeing with some of his points.

It's on the last page that Kristol really seems to come apart at the seams. Here are words by Kristol that could have come straight from something written by Coulter or Hannity:

"But what began to concern me more and more were the clear signs of rot and decadence germinating within American society - a rot and decadence that was no longer the consequence of liberalism but was the actual agenda of contemporary liberalism."

Neo-Cons Likud Shills for Iraq War? NO! YOU APPEASERS!.......2004-10-13

There is so much foolishness about neo-conservatives coming from the liberal media, so these essays by Irving Kristol are a must read and a powerful demonstration of conservatism PERIOD.

Today's critics of neo-conservatism want you to think:

1. neo-cons secretly or accidentally believe in Trotsky (LAUGH) and neo-cons are undermining conservatism (THE LIBS ARE REALLY WORRIED ABOUT THAT AREN"T THEY)

2. neo-cons are imperialists (I'M ROLLING ON THE FLOOR NOW)

3. neo-cons are shills for the Likud Party in Israel (SOMEBODY GET ME A HANKY)

4. neo-cons are over-bookish Jewish chickens and compensate for it by being hawkish (A LIBERAL ACTUALLY MADE THAT "ARGUMENT" IN THE SUNDAY NEW YORK TIMES - UNCONTROLLABLE GUFFAWS)

5. neo-cons have a vast interlocking network stemming from Leo Strauss. {The liberals have developed their own neo-con ememies list which they repeat on TV and radio like a Litany to re-assure themselves).

I have to laugh when I watch the cable shows and listen to talk radio and hear people talk about the relationship between neo-conservatives and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

These liberal idiots all say the same thing. Somehow, Jewish neo-conservative gurus mesmerized the Bush administration into the Iraq war. Talk about moronic conspiracy theories?!

Some on the Right have bought into the scare-mongering over neo-conservatives as well. Pat Buchanan is a notable example. (AS IF BUCHANAN IS ULTIMATE GUARDIAN OF AUTHENTIC CONSERVATISM).

So instead of listening to all that, read these essays which span decades.

A very good overview of Krisol's beleifs..........2004-06-07

Whether you agree or disagree with Kristol on any of the issues that he writes about is besides the point. Kristol is an extremely talented and intelligent writer and would be whether we was a neo-con, a old conservative, new liberal or whatever. Thus if you disagree with any of the points outlined in Kristol's book then do not let it turn you off from reading it, as it is still very educational about the neoconservative ideology.
However the books real merits are that it is organized so well into essays rather than just one long rant or a few long and preachy chapters. Because everything in this book is jsut something that Kristol wrote at one time or another, you can read just one essay a day or a few a day as most are rather short. Furthermore the table of contents provides great direction about any issue that Kristol wrote about ranging from Race, Sex, and family to Jews, to Capitalism and the Democratic Idea. Because each essay is so easy to read and the individual issues are easy to find this tome can be easily used as a reference source and if you need to know anything about the neo- conservative ideology be sure to look here first, especially if you think that he is wrong about everything.

Another example of confused conservatives.......2003-10-30

The author is a fairly adequate writer. He packs alot of ideas into a fairly compact space. He is entertaining, and attempts to lure the reader into his mindset rather than writing a book on pure political philosophy which can get dry at times. I give this book 4 stars in that respect. However, 4 stars shall not be my offical rating. I feel the need to counterbalance his fair writing skills with a negative rating because I think the writer is just anothr example of an ultra-confused modern quasi-conservative (aka a "new" conservative, aka a left winger masquarading as a conservative).

If you want REAL conservatism, Old-Conservatism read the works of Ludwig Von Mises and Murray Rothbard (go to the mises.org website where you will learn the very definition of good quality scholarship in writing). Also read the works of Justin Raimondo whos book "Reclaiming the American Right: The Lost Legacy of the Conservative Movement" you will find more beneficial. Also read Raimandos book "Enemy of the State: The Life of Murray N. Rothbard", or even "The Conservative Mind" for classic essays on Old Conservatism before it became poisoned by the post New Deal socialists turned quasi-conservatives. Furthermore, this book reaks of religious influence straight from the beginning. Religion has nothing whatsoeverto do with political conservatism in the least; I give this book zero stars for that portion, attempting to mislead the reader with his anti-conservative agenda. The book is filled with entire chapters that have nothing to do with Old-Conservatism based on cherishing economic property rights. The book is filled with new-conservatism, shove it down your throats quasi-morality lessons. True conservatism stems largely from the works of John Locke's 17th Century "Second Treatise on Government" upon which he lays the foundation for economic property rights. The thesis which has served Old-conservatives well for 300 years is simple. A mans physical property (land and such) can never be secure until a man is secure in his persons. "Self-ownership"; the right to possess, sell, trade, or buy "ideas" or "thoughts" is the premise of all true conservatism. Mans "thoughts and ideas" are his property just the same as a piece of land. Thats why we have copyrights and trademarks! Yet, modern quasi-conservatives, instigated by phonies such as this author, want to purvey their "new conservative" agenda by controlling mans ideas and thoughts through law (i.e. anti-porno laws, anti-seditious speech laws, anti-whatever-else-is-immoral-today type of laws)... and if a man cannot control his own body and do with it what he will, then he'll never be secure in his physical property,... which is why we have rampant emminant domain laws which take away peoples houses and give them to corporations so they can build your local strip-malls, not to mention "property seizure" laws which dump on peoples Constitutional rights.
This book IS very interesting, and well written... but it's also a good example of where true conservatism went wrong, and in fact I recommend that every Old-Conservative read this book to make sure they don't make the same mistakes as promoted in this book.

This book is a breathtaking collection of social thought--sober, lucid, even profound--on the possibilities and dangers of liberal society.
