I am 14 years old and i thought that this book was great. At first, I expected it to be only for little kids. But, me and my friends thoroughly enjoyed it. I know, and all of my friends agree that I had the best slumber party ever because of that book! So, in other words, go out and buy that book. It is awesome.

Book Description

What happens to members of the United States Armed Forces after they die? Why do soldiers endanger their lives to recover the remains of their comrades? Why does the military spend enormous resources and risk further fatalities to recover the bodies of the fallen, even decades after the cessation of hostilities? Soldier Dead is the first book to fully address the complicated physical, social, religious, economic, and political issues concerning the remains of men and women who die while serving their country. In doing so, Michael Sledge reveals the meanings of the war dead for families, soldiers, and the nation as a whole.

Why does recovering the remains of servicepeople matter? Soldier Dead examines this question and provides a thorough analysis of the processes of recovery, identification, return, burial, and remembrance of the dead. Sledge traces the ways in which the handling of our Soldier Dead has evolved over time and how these changes have reflected not only advances in technology and capabilities but also the shifting attitudes of the public, government, and military. He also considers the emotional stress experienced by those who handle the dead; the continuing efforts to retrieve bodies from Korea and elsewhere; and how unresolved issues regarding the treatment of enemy dead continue to affect U.S. foreign relations.

Skillfully incorporating excerpts from interviews, personal correspondence and diaries, military records, and journalistic accounts-as well as never-before-published photographs and his own reflections-Michael Sledge presents a clear, concise, and compassionate story about what the dead mean to the living. Throughout Soldier Dead, the voices of the fallen are heard, as are those of family members and military personnel responsible for the dead before final disposition. At times disturbing and at other times encouraging, they are always powerful as they speak of danger, duty, courage, commitment, and care.

5 out of 5 stars MUST READ for therapists working with combat veterans.......2006-01-22

As a military psychologist, I will recommend this book to all of my colleagues. This book has much more than just how we handle the dead. It is rich with details about military culture, what goes on in combat, and how people respond to the stressors of combat. But the author does a wonderful job of not pathologizing behavior that someone without military experience might not understand.

4 out of 5 stars A Review of Soldier Dead.......2005-09-06

This work was a carefully researched and readable study, although it is not for all audiences given the subject matter. I would like to have seen more attention paid to the Korean War efforts of the Graves Registration Service. Overall, however, it was an important contribution to a subject that usually has little attention paid to it.

5 out of 5 stars Not just soldiers...our culture's reaction to death.......2005-08-21

Although death in war is usually a grisly subject, the author has handled it with a compassion and reverence that helps us put a human face on the ultimate act of sacrifice of our military. He does not dwell on the macabre, instead giving a very poignant account of the social aspects of death. "Soldier Dead" gives insight in to our culture and values in dealing with "casualties", and how media treatment of this subject has changed over the years--one example being turning a human "Soldier Dead" into a euphemistic "casualty". The author compassionately maintains focus on the fact that a Soldier Dead is a person, not a faceless "troop", as well as examining the social aspects of soldiers giving their lives for a cause, and how it affects their comrades and families. I recommend this to those interested in the human costs of war, as well as those seeking insight in to how our society deals with death in general. Certainly any leader who puts our soldiers in harm's way should read this book. Although war can sometimes be a necessary evil, our society should never be allowed to ignore the the human cost.

5 out of 5 stars Praise for Michael Sledge and His Book, Soldier Dead.......2005-06-11

Having served in Graves Registration during the Korean War I have an appreciation for the content in Mr. Sledge's book. He has accomplished some serious research on the subject of how we recover, identify, bury and honor our military fallen. For me the book provides a true picture of this country's efforts to do its best for our military dead. It is backed up with detailed references, index and notes. To my knowledge this book is a primer for anyone wishing to know more about the subject.

5 out of 5 stars Its an Honor.......2005-05-20

I would just like to say that I was honored to have my family featured in this book. My father SMSGT Paul Buege was killed in the Gulf War, and my family went through many struggles and fights with the military to honor my father in the way we wished. This book is excellent in helping the general public realize ways in which the military handles fallen heros returning home, in good and not so good ways.

        Book Description

Nonmonotonic reasoning in its broadest sense is reasoning to conclusions on the basis of incomplete information. Given more information, previously drawn inferences may be retracted. Commonsense reasoning has a nonmonotonic component; it has been argued that almost all commonsense inferences are of this sort. From the end of the 1980s to the present there has been an explosion in research in nonmonotonic reasoning. It is now possible to understand more clearly the properties of the major formalisms from a metatheoretical point of view, the relationships among the formalisms and their connection to independently developed proof methods. The goal of this monograph is to make this understanding more accessible.

        Book Description

"A diary for a social entrrepreneur, an inspiring how-to guide for young people with big dreams, a thoughtful tale of the ups and downs of a decade at the stunningly successful non-profit organization"--New York Times

From her dorm room at Princeton University, twenty-one-year-old college senior Wendy Kopp decided to launch a movement to improve public education in America. In One Day, All Children... , she shares the remarkable story of Teach For America, a non-profit organization that sends outstanding college graduates to teach for two years in the most under-resourced urban and rural public schools in America. The astonishing success of the program has proven it possible for children in low-income areas to attain the same level of academic achievement as children in more privileged areas and more privileged schools.

One Day, All Children... is not just a personal memoir. It's a blueprint for the new civil rights movement--a movement that demands educational access and opportunity for all American children.

3 out of 5 stars Inspiring Story, But Gets Bogged Down.......2006-05-18

ONE DAY, ALL CHILDREN is the story of how Wendy Kopp started Teach For America. For those unfamiliar with the program, Teach For America is an organization that recruits college graduates and young adults to work for two years at inner city and rural schools where there are teaching shortages. Corps members are sent through an extremely extensive three week training program during the summer before heading off to their various assignments in the fall. Teach For America has come under criticism by the professional educational teaching programs because corps members aren't forced to go through a teacher education program before being hired. Personally, I think the program is a great idea that is meeting the needs of our nation's underprivileged children; instead of throwing money at the savage inequality of education, Teach For America is attempting to fix the problem.

ONE DAY, ALL CHILDREN explains how Kopp came up with the idea, how she got the organization started, the trials and tribulations of the organization during the first year, growing pains that happened years later, etc. Those who are familiar with Teach For America might find the book interesting as well as anyone looking for a somewhat inspiring story of a person who creating a national life changing educational agency from scratch. Those who are involved in education might enjoy reading the book, too, though professional teacher educators might balk at the idea of sleeping with an enemy that they seem to hate. For everyone else, the book has some interesting moments, but most of those come near the beginning so you might want to spend your time reading something else.

4 out of 5 stars An Inspiring, True Story That Tackles Harsh Realities.......2005-02-21

"One Day, All Children" is a captivating story of how Wendy Kopp, the founder of Teach for America, and how she followed her dreams to DO SOMETHING about the harsh realities and failures of many of our public schools. Mind you, the book TELLS ALL, from fundraising nightmares to team member turmoil; this is not simply a book on idealistic pedagogy. The story is guaranteed to frustrate you and inspire you. That a fresh college grad, assisted by other fresh young people, established Teach for America is incredible. This is worthwhile reading for Teach for America applicants, new teachers, education students, and social justice-minded people.

4 out of 5 stars An inspirational short read.......2002-09-19

In less than 200 pages, Ms. Kopp details every step she took in establishing Teach for America, the national teaching corps for recent college graduates. Chapters 1-9 are a primer for fundraising techniques, non-profit organizational set-up and strong management skills. But, Chapter 10, the most interesting by far, is a lengthy description on what makes good educators. You may be inspired enough to join in the efforts in ensuring excellent education for all children in this great nation of ours.

4 out of 5 stars An Idea Acted Upon...........2002-07-20

One person, and idea, and a difference. Wendy Kopp detailed the relentless cycle of securing grant money to meet payroll to keep the organization afloat. Often the life of this organization was within days of sinking, but alas, the golden check was cleared. She is a very gifted networker, who managed a large organization without management experience until she handed over the operational reigns to those who knew what was going on. This account is from the perspective of the person who created the organization and ran it, so this should be taken into account. Their was heavy emphasis on recruiting graduates from Ivy League universities, which is good, because the students they would be teaching almost never have access to teachers with Ivy League educations and exposure. Those not in the Ivy Leagues seemed to not have a shot, although they could have made a significant impact. The reason why Teach For America exists in the first place in my opinion, is because the monopolistic public school system is an outright systematic, bureaucratic disaster today. TFA is a needed action, but also puts a band-aid on a bullet wound that is bleeding like a sieve. Recommended to young, new teachers, that are still idealistic and haven't become cynical, burned out, or moribund yet because of politics, administrators, and idiotic school policies.

5 out of 5 stars Success against the odds!.......2002-03-16

Read the book in one day! Even though you know the outcome, it has the pull of a fiction novel as you read through the ups and downs of building TFA.

Kopp shows that vision, persistence and optimism can beat the odds when it comes to a good idea. She also demonstrates that all good ideas hit big speed bumps and resiliency is key with some insightful stories.

In addition there is a fairly specific prescription for what makes for a good teacher at the end of the book. This isn't philosophical musings--this is exeperiential lessons being laid out by Kopp.

If you feel like being uplifted and gaining some knowledge on what makes a good teacher operate--read this book.

4 out of 5 stars Ancedotes humanize complex survey of CSA staff operations.......2000-08-31

The history of the Civil War is more than recounting the movements of armies and the fighting of battles. Someone has to gather the information and send the messages that brought the armies together in the first place. That is the focus of this detailed history of staff work in Lee's Army of Northern Virginia.

When the war began, the Confederacy found itself having to build everything from scratch, and their army was no different. Although they borrowed heavily from the U.S. Army's way of doing things, it eventually became clear that innovations would have to be made, both to account for the maneuvering of growing armies, but also to deal with the expanded technology -- railroads, telegraphs and the use of longer and more accurate weapons -- rarely seen before by fighting men.

"Buff Facings" is a detailed account of how Lee and his generals coped. While the depth of detail may discourage the general reader, Bartholomees offers a generous selection of ancedotes that allow for bursts of humanity to show. In the middle of an account of the development of the Signal Corps, he relates how Major General Stephen Ramseur received a vitally important message just before the Battle of Cedar Creek: "The crisis is over and all is well." It announced the birth of his daughter.

5 out of 5 stars excellent addition to Civil War scholarship.......1999-07-20

A book on Confederate staff work was definitely needed, and this book fits the bill nicely. The first half of the book offers very thorough descriptions of the various staff positions and agencies. The author does a good job of explaining how these positions came into being, how they were manned, and how (if at all) staff officers were trained. Also interesting to read the author's relation of these 19th c. staff positons to their modern counterparts.

If I have any criticism, it may be that the text relies a little too much on three individual staff officers- Walter Taylor, Henry Kyd Douglas, and Heros Von Borcke. I wonder if there are other memoirs out there that would expand on their accounts.

Overall an outstanding book. Very logical and readable. Fascinating treatment of a neglected topic.

I read this book (in conjunction with other texts) for a graduate section of a Social Policies class, and was impressed with the ease both authors transformed the abstract and dry into something exciting and inspiring.

No, social policy is not the most glamorous field for college students to enter, and unarguably the American system's shrinkage is going to pose severe problems in the next couple of years, but emotional and moral rewards of doing what is right make this venture worth it. Alternately, the authors balance this view with pragmatic political approaches that equip the reader with introductory strategies to hold off or even staunch further erosion of American social policy.

The book by itself is enjoyable, but advanced classes should use the American Welfare State as a supplementary text for historical background.

5 out of 5 stars Clear language, comprehensive.......2002-08-28

I've been reading Karger and Stoesz for years. This is a good, relevant edition to understanding social welfare policy. However, the 4th edition leaves out the historical perspectives; readers will want to refer to earlier editions or supplemental sources for historical content.

                    Book Description

Goat Bell, Still & Sweets is an illustrated collection of remarkably evocative, sometimes poignant hunting dog stories and vignettes, dedicated to the memory of the author's beloved animals. If any accounts of hunting trips can appeal to all readers, including those who have never hunted, it would be Bill Trevillian's, with their way of drawing on universal emotion.
