For writers too.......2006-05-29
This book is written for parents who are looking for story-telling guidance and inspiration, but for anyone who is interested in writing books or short stories for children it is extremely valuable and useful. It far surpasses most "how to" books and articles on writing for the juvenile market.
It is a beautiful and literate book, and not only does it teach gently about writing, it almost inadvertantly offers deep wisdom about being a Good Parent. Perhaps this is even a more important aspect of this book, as it's suggestions for telling a "good" story to one's children are really suggestions on how to see, feel, and understand your children and to then connect adult wisdom and values to them in a way they can accept.
This is a truly wise and valuable book.
You Can Do It! ..........2003-04-29
...That's the message from Chase Collins, the author of Tell Me a Story.
Children NEED to hear stories, and not just from books. They especially need their parents to spend time with them. Storytelling is a wonderful way to do this, and bedtime is one of the best times for stories.
This book will help you create stories specifically for your child. In one chapter, the author provides a model to follow for story-making. Lots of other encouragement and guidance are also provided.
Please keep in mind that the model given in this book is just ONE way...one model. Wide reading of different kinds of stories will also help you in creating your own.
Try it, and have fun!

Great Excellent History of Vieques and the Victory to Stop the Navy Bombing.......2007-10-08
Kate McCaffrey conducted on-site research in Vieques for about 10 years in order to present this very clear history of how the US Navy came to Vieques in the 1940's to conduct military practices and how the people of Vieques were successful in ending the bombing in 2003. I have a guest house in Vieques and keep a copy of Kate's book in each of my rooms so that visitors will know that our "island paradise" has been contaminated with 60 years of munitions and our people made sick with cancer and other illnesses from toxic military waste. I hope that everyone who reads this book will support a safe and complete clean up of Vieques and sustainable development of former navy lands that benefits our people. Kathy

Articles from the dean of science writers.......2001-02-23
This is yet another collection of Asimov's science essays for Fantasy and Science Fiction Magazine. He starts out with the title essay (about the theoretical planet Vulcan that caused perturbations in Mercury's orbit) and ends up talking about the existence of God. As he puts it, he goes from the least controversial essay to the most. All the essays date from the mid-seventies and aren't as dated as the last collection I read, though there is obsolete data about Pluto. As always, it's an easy read and informative.

Book Description
What is it about sports that turns otherwise sane people into raving lunatics? Why does winning compel people to tear down goal posts, and losing, to drown themselves in bad keg beer? In short, why do fans care?
In search of answers, Warren St. John seeks out the roving community of RVers who follow the Alabama Crimson Tide from game to game. A movable feast of Weber grills and Igloo coolers, these are hard-core football fans who arrive on Wednesday for Saturday’s game: The Reeses, who skipped their own daughter’s wedding because it coincided with a Bama game; Ray Pradat, the Episcopal minister who watches the games on a television beside his altar while performing weddings; and John Ed, the wheeling and dealing ticket scalper whose access to good seats gives him power on par with the governor. In no time at all, St. John buys an RV (a $5,500 beater named The Hawg) and joins the caravan for a full football season, chronicling the world of the extreme fan and learning that in the shadow of the stadium, it can all begin to seem strangely normal.
Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer is not only a hilarious travel story, but a cultural anthropology of fans that goes a long way toward demystifying the universal urge to take sides and to win.
Download Description
In the life of every sports fan, there comes a moment of reckoning. It may happen when your team wins on a last—second field goal and you suddenly find yourself clenched in a loving embrace with a large hairy man you've never met…Or in the long, hormonally depleted days after a loss, when you're felled by a sensation similar to the one you first experienced following the death of a pet. At such moments the fan is forced to confront the question others–spouses, friends, children, and colleagues—have asked for years:
Why do I care?
What is it about sports that turns otherwise sane, rational people into raving lunatics? Why does winning compel people to tear down goalposts, and losing, to drown themselves in bad keg beer? In short, why do fans care?
In search of the answers to these questions, Warren St. John seeks out the roving community of RVers who follow the Alabama Crimson Tide from game to game across the South. A movable feast of Weber grills, Igloo coolers, and die–hard superstition, these are characters who arrive on Wednesday for Saturday's game: Freeman and Betty Reese, who skipped their own daughter's wedding because it coincided with a Bama game; Ray Pradat, the Episcopalian minister who watches the games on a television set beside his altar while performing weddings; John Ed (pronounced as three syllables, John Ay-ud), the wheeling and dealing ticket scalper whose access to good seats gives him power on par with the governor; and Paul Finebaum, the Anti–Fan, a wisecracking sports columnist and talk–radio host who makes his living mocking Alabama fans–and who has to live in a gated community for all the threats he receives in response.
In no time at all, St. John himself is drawn into the world of full–immersion fandom: he buys an RV (a $5,500 beater called The Hawg) and joins the caravan for a football season, chronicling the world of the extreme fan and learning that in the shadow of the stadium, it can all begin to seem strangely normal.
Along the way, St. John takes readers on illuminating forays into the deep roots of humanity's sports mania (did you know that tailgaters could be found in eighth–century Greece?), the psychology of crowds, and the surprising neuroscience behind the thrill of victory.
Reminiscent of Confederates in the Attic and the works of Bill Bryson, Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer is not only a travel story, but a cultural anthropology of fans that goes a long way toward demystifying the universal urge to take sides and to win.

Roll Tide Roll.......2007-10-02
This is a must read for anyone with an interest in college football and in particular the Crimson Tide. It is a delight to read.
A worthy read.......2007-01-02
I am a college football fan and that helps when reading this book. I should say it is not completely necessary though. I found this book to be a interesting look at a sub culture of the sport I love. The book is fair and clear in presentation, no effort to hide the ugly part of this world, or sauce up the fun part. Mostly the book speaks about a interesting journey I wish I had the guts (and the time) to take.
I always measure a book by am I happy I bought it or do I wish I had gotten it out of the library. I am happy I bought this book, and you will be as well.
Football Frenzy.......2006-09-23
Warren St. John's Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer is a fascinating look at the fans of the University of Alabama's football team and particularly those who RV to the games. Anybody who is a college football fan will enjoy the book. Your level of enthusiasm for your team may not match that of the Crimson Tide RV folks, but the Tide fans are fun to read about. You will learn about Bama Bombs, the Alabama-Auburn rivalry, ticket brokering, and the world of the fans arriving at games days ahead of kickoff in the RVs. Read the book during football season and decide whether or not you would like to be part of the scene. Some will want to drive to Alabama and experience a game firsthand. Others will be horrified by the description of the whole experience. Give it a try.
Bama Tailgaters' must read.......2006-08-28
Fabulous book with a humerous slant -- my husband and I both enjoyed the book.
Great fun!.......2006-07-15
Even though I live in the Northwest, I've always viewed SEC football from afar and kind of admired their fanaticism. I didn't know they were this nuts until I read the book!
It's really a great read, St. John explores the Southern football culture through the life of RV traveling. Along the way he meets some great characters -- my favorite a gregarious ticket broker -- who view Alabama football as a religion and way of life. But through this fanaticism you see some real warm-hearted people (the chicken farmer, the South Carolina couple, the divorcee), who care about people as much as football. Yeah, there are some unsavory characters, too -- a couple racists -- but you'll find that anywhere in the country.
St. John does a marvelous job detailing his travels, the games, and his own internal struggle in questioning whether he's too much of a fanatic, also.
Thankfully he doesn't drone on, he keeps it to under 300 pages, a nice, fun, quick read. He doesn't pontificate on 'Bama football, nor condem those who are fanatics. He details a fun road existence through an Alabama football season.
Great fun for those who not only love football, but also enjoy reading about American cultures and society.
Book Description
This volume begins with an investigation of Operation Barbarossa, the German invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941. It draws upon eye-witness German accounts of what occurred, and supplements these with German archival and detailed Soviet materials. The Soviet government has released extensive amounts of formerly classified archival materials from the period. This material has been incorporated into the maps and text.

Great source for the first few weeks of the German Invasion.......2006-01-18
I was very delighted to get and read this book. As already described it shows the operations that the German Army and Red Army undertook when the Wehrmacht invaded the Soviet Union. Many will be surprised to see the amount of actual counter-attacks that the Red Army was able to launch which at times stopped the Germans for days while at other times caused more havoc among the Red Army's own troops rather than that of the Germans. Coordination was poor, combined arms operations were almost never seen on the battlefield as communication problems plagued the entire appartus of the Red Army from divisions all the way up through front headquarters. This book is an essential text and reference to understanding some of the operations undertaken in 1941 and their consequences as well as a great reference for Soviet tank forces and their composition when the war began.
For the seriously interested only - but then a must read.......2005-07-18
David Glantz is probably the foremost historian of the Soviet forces in World War 2 in the English language. When he was still in the US Army, responsible for the study of the Red Army, he ran the so-called `Art of War' symposia during the 1980s. These were usually attended by then serving officers, who received lectures and presentations from German veteran officers of the fighting in the east from 1941, to 1945. Some of these officers had been in very prominent positions during the war, and other, more junior officers rose to high ranks in the Bundeswehr and NATO after the war.
`The Early Period of War' is an edited transcript of a symposium held in 1987 in Garmisch in Germany, dealing with the operations by German armoured forces during the early battles of operation Barbarossa. The unit of analysis is the axis of advance, and presentations are given by divisional officers of formations fighting on these axis - e.g. Graf von Kielmannsegg and Helmut Ritgen of 6. Panzerdivision present on the battles on the Siauliai (Schaulen) axis in Army Group North's sector of advance. This is extremely valuable in allowing an insight into the divisional operations in the context of larger operations at the time.
The book covers four main axis, Siauliai, Vilnius, Byalistok/Minsk, and Lutsk/Rovno. It also analyses the battle for Smolensk. These are framed by an introduction, in which David Glantz outlines the Soviet situation prior to the invasion, and a conclusion chapter in which the relevance of the experience is discussed. The book has a lot of maps that range in quality from poor to adequate. There are tables and graphical information on German formations, again of poor quality. An index is provided.
As an avid student of the war in the east, I found this book very helpful in giving me an in-depth view of the German experience of the first weeks of Barbarossa and the problems that faced the German side. It is unfortunate that no Soviet officers did contribute, but since the seminar was held with a view to help NATO defeat the armies of the Warsaw Pact, that maybe too much to expect.
The book is certainly not aimed at the general reader, but instead at the serious student of military history. It is relatively dry, and the quality of the maps does not help much either. While it can be read as a stand-alone document, it will be more helpful to read it in conjunction with a work that deals with Barbarossa more generally, e.g. the MGFA's volume IV `The Attack on the Soviet Union'. Otherwise there is a risk that events described in this book cannot be placed in context. In my opinion it belongs into the library of anyone seriously interested in German operations, and the war between Germany and the Soviet Union.
A Detailed but Shoddy Look At the First Days of Barbarossa.......2001-01-02
This book is essentially the transcript of a conference held at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas and focuses on the early period of Operation Barbarossa. This could have been an awesome book; there is a wealth of data but it is poorly presented. There are day-by-day sketch maps of each sector, but they are almost impossible to read. Original German intelligence situation maps are included and they don't make German staff officers look very good; unit symbols are not used - they actually wrote "RD" for Rifle Division on the map. This book is very useful in showing how much of a fight the Red Army really put up in the first month of the war; the Red Army of 1941 was clumsy, but not toothless. Most readers will be unaware that the first big tank battle in Russia occurred when the Soviets were able to mount a very serious armored counterattack at Dubno on the Southwestern front. However, this book missed its opportunity due to very poor editing and wandering anecdotal reminisces of German veterans (one German officer concluded that combat officers need a good knowledge of military history AND the Bible!). There are over 200 maps, but most are crude and barely legible.
Very detailed refernce.......1998-09-02
The best reference available on the first 2 weeks of Barbarossa (particularly the opening week) for all three German Army groups, and then the Smolensk operation. Amazing operational and tactical detail (Corps level) with additional selected unit level descriptions. Particularly interesting are Glantz's insights into German perception of Soviet forces, and the reality, as well as Soviet tactical moves to counter the invasion. Written as a transcript of a 1980's military conference, in more of a "study" format, than strait recounting of events with Glantz acting as editor and conference participant.
Book Description
During the civil rights era, Atlanta thought of itself as "The City Too Busy to Hate," a rare place in the South where the races lived and thrived together. Over the course of the 1960s and 1970s, however, so many whites fled the city for the suburbs that Atlanta earned a new nickname: "The City Too Busy Moving to Hate."
In this reappraisal of racial politics in modern America, Kevin Kruse explains the causes and consequences of "white flight" in Atlanta and elsewhere. Seeking to understand segregationists on their own terms, White Flight moves past simple stereotypes to explore the meaning of white resistance. In the end, Kruse finds that segregationist resistance, which failed to stop the civil rights movement, nevertheless managed to preserve the world of segregation and even perfect it in subtler and stronger forms.
Challenging the conventional wisdom that white flight meant nothing more than a literal movement of whites to the suburbs, this book argues that it represented a more important transformation in the political ideology of those involved. In a provocative revision of postwar American history, Kruse demonstrates that traditional elements of modern conservatism, such as hostility to the federal government and faith in free enterprise, underwent important transformations during the postwar struggle over segregation. Likewise, white resistance gave birth to several new conservative causes, like the tax revolt, tuition vouchers, and privatization of public services. Tracing the journey of southern conservatives from white supremacy to white suburbia, Kruse locates the origins of modern American politics.

Important History of United States.......2007-03-26
This book is first, well written and then well researched. As someone who grew up in Atlanta during a good part of the time period covered by the book I'm impressed by the amount of detail and the level of accuracy that the writer provides. His analysis of not only what happen in and around the south but how it ties into the rise of the new conservatism is spot on. This should be required reading for all high school seniors as well as most politicians. To learn from the past we need more writers and researchers like Kevin M. Kruse to help illuminate the way. Please, please, please buy this book and read it.
Fascinating Read.......2005-12-09
I'm not from Georgia and I'm not a history guy, but I found this book fascinating. The "editorial review" provided by Amazon does a fine job describing the book, so I'll just give a few of my impressions. The book is well written and easy to read (which don't always go hand in hand - see James, Henry). I found myself not only learning about Atlanta but also better understanding the phenomenon of white flight in general. This book has really opened my eyes to the issues of the city versus the suburbs; I can see now that many of the struggles of the '50s and '60s are still continuing today, if in slightly different forms.
Don't let the title of this book mislead you; this is not a 350-page rant about how evil conservatives are. In fact, I was surprised at how often the "good guys" in the integration struggle, such as Mayor Hartsfield and his coalition of business elites, were motivated not by a sense of social justice but by capitalism: many of the so-called city fathers were just as loathe to integrate as the segregationists, but the image of Atlanta as a fully integrated city was just too lucrative for their businesses and the city's economy. The book is blessedly free of sermonizing, as the author simply recounts what took place and shows how those events have influenced the world we live in, both political and physical. Value judgments are largely left to the reader.
One last thing. When I think of all the material covered in this book, from violent flashpoints to school board meetings to segregationist poetry to newspaper advertisements, I can't believe I wasn't bored out of my mind - this stuff usually isn't my cup of tea. But instead of bogging it down, the author used the excruciating level of detail to breath life into the story, animating the people and events in a way that made me feel connected to them. Regardless of your ideology, I think you will find yourself entertained and enlightened by this book.
Specific details from Atlanta provide a better understanding of the many sides of the process that reshaped the South.......2005-11-15
Like many people, I was familiar with the big highlights of the civil rights movement and the phenomenon of white flight, but to see the detail Kevin Kruse provides on the era in Atlanta is eye opening. You get the stories about sit-ins and the first African American to go to this or that school, but the smaller things like neighborhoods and public parks becoming "black" really gives the reader a good idea of the glacial pace that change was taking place. The "freedom of association" idea presented by the author captures the strategy of segregationists to maintain their exclusive use of public places by shifting from outright racism to a broad appeal for individual rights. The latter idea is what the author presents as the basis for the recent success of the Republican party not only in the South but suburban areas throughout the country.
Well researched, insightful, and an incredibly engaging read.......2005-10-28
This book is incredibly well researched, insightful, and an incredibly engaging read. I don't often read historical books but I did enjoy David McCullough's "Truman" and "John Adams" and found this book equally well written and often times more interesting. The author, Kevin Kruse doesn't just tell you about the politics of the time but draws you in to the people who made history. Like characters in a novel I found myself invested in them and looking forward to the next page. I have no connection to Atlanta, but that doesn't matter because this is an American story more than just an Atlanta story and is strikingly relevant today for anyone interested in how modern conservatism came to be. Particularly compelling was Kruse's telling of how rural and urban voters were manipulated, and the politics of racism were balanced with uneasy alliances between black and white community leaders. From the start the author reframes the discussion away from the traditional perspective of what people were "against" to think about what people were "for", and in doing so paints a picture of the values that fueled white flight, the civil rights movement, and continues to drive much of our modern political ideology. Whether you are interested in the history, modern politics, or just a great story I recommend this book

Funny.......2000-04-22
This book is about the author's experiences and thoughts as a normal American. It is a great way to use up usless time because the stories are short yet they really make you think of life today, 20 years ago(when it was written)and through recent history. I also think it is a good book to read when your not in the mood for class for this book has little to none.
