Book Description
This is a classic work not only on this history of armour in the 14th century, but of a key battle and the wound pathology relating to victims of the battle.

Unique work.......2005-10-08
This book contains a wealth of knowledge about medieval armour and the effects of weapons. The pictures are fantastic, skeletons buried in their armour, rarely does one get to see how armour was actually worn. The breakdowns and detail of actual armour construction is immaculate and enables any competant armourer to reproduce the examples shown. The detail from an archeologist's point of view was a little too in depth for my interest but if you are that way inclined then great. Only issue I have is the "analysis" of some of the wounds seen, Mr. Thordeman seems to imply that this battle was unusual in some way, that the combatants fought with unusual fury. He sites one incident of one combatant having both legs severed by a single blow as an indication of some great fury and intensity. I only disagree as there are very few examples of medieval battle wound pathology to compare the Wisby corpses. It seems that the author is looking at the battle from too detached a viewpoint, forgetting that killing was the purpose of the people who showed up to battle that day. This is a small detail but supposition as to the mental states of combatants, by someone who has no first hand experience of battle is unproductive. Otherwise a great book.
A true masterpiece!.......2003-02-27
This book has a very special meaning to me since I'm from the town of Wisby(nowdays spelled Visby). Born and raised on the island Gotland and lived most of my life thete. I'v built several of these coats of armour and so far everyone I've tried on have been of satisfatcion. The book is so far the best resource book I've ever found. I have for a long time tried to find the first edition, but IF you can find it somewhere it's incredibly expensive. So jus imagine my joy when I saw there was a reissue! And very soon I'm going to be proud owner of this masterpiece...
The book is really easy to use and have exceptional drawings and scetches. Transforming the scale of the objects in the book to original size is really easy and there's a lot of information i general. At last a recommendation for all you SCA-fighters out there. Try out armour no.6 and no.9 because they give very good protection and are comfortable to wear.

It works!.......2001-10-30
I've made armor using the diagrams of existing armor types from this book. I didn't much care for some of the strapping arrangements described, so I designed my own. (Hey, this is the armor the regular fighters left behind - Wisby was defended by the teens and the oldsters to judge from the age of the bodies. This suggests the men of prime fighting-age were elsewhere, with their primary armor.) It worked, well, and protected me in combat. And the illustrations and text were clear, clear, clear.
Great book!.......2001-10-20
This is the complete version of the orginal book all in one book, not two sets like the first. There is just a little intro added by Price. BUY THIS BOOK! It has wonderful information on the skeletal finds, plus it shows the orginal armor that was found, sketches of it, and recreations done by Bengt and company. I am thrilled they republished this book! It is impossible to find the orginal two volume set.

To many names and dates, not enough explanation or depth.......1999-10-20
It is an endless list of names (and dates in brackets)with occasional interest.
There is not any deep analysis of any of the propaganda documents alluded to. For example "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion" is mentioned maybe 15 times in the book, but with only the briefest of explanations of it.
Quotes in French are generally not translated. Sorry, I don't know French, what am I supposed to do?
Names of long gone newspapers are scattered here and there, as if the name is interesting and useful in itself.
Terms are used without further explanation. For example:
"This was the British version of Bushido"
Ah. Can you remember what Bushido was? Has he already explained this? Maybe it is in the index? No, of course it is not in the index.
It is assumed that you know ALL your WORLD history, because Mr. Thomson is not going to remind you of any of it.
There are interesting parts, but you have to wade through a lot of fluff, names, and untranslated quotations, to get to it.
It feels like a fleshed out detailed university thesis.
In all, a good overview of propaganda.......1999-09-23
This book was a nice general overview of how propaganda has been used throughout the ages. My only two problems with the book concerned the lack of visuals (more could have been used), and the occasional confusion concerning historical figures. I found that I was lost when discussion was given on British history. However, these minor problems did not detract from the overall book.

From the madness of King George to the equine escapades of Catherine the Great, from the intramural squabbles of Elizabeth and Di to the staggeringly decadent exploits of Charles X: in this gossipy chronicle of regal shenanigans, British journalist Karl Shaw dishes plenty of dirt--and ably demonstrates why royal watching is such a satisfying hobby.
Was there ever a good monarch? To judge by Shaw's account, it's unlikely. Instead, he writes, "Every monarchy in Europe has at some time or another been ruled over by a madman," adding in passing that only Bavaria's King Ludwig had the good grace to turn his madness into a source of tourist revenue for his subjects' descendants. Of the mad and the downright curious there's no shortage in these pages, as Shaw delivers anecdote after anecdote concerning the demented, sometimes awful, sometimes entertaining behavior of the likes of Germany's Frederick the Great, who "drank up to forty cups of coffee a day for several weeks in an experiment to see if it was possible to exist without sleep"; Russia's Catherine I, "a raddled old alcoholic with bloodshot eyes, wild and matted hair and clothes soiled with urine stains ... [who] once survived an assassination attempt too drunk to realize that anything had happened"; and England's Queen Mary, "the only known royal kleptomaniac," whose aides would surreptitiously gather the knickknacks she'd lifted from her subjects' parlors and return them with muffled apologies.
Royal Babylon is a guilty pleasure of a book, and one that does a fine job of explaining, in Shaw's tongue-in-cheek words, "why most continentals can't get enough of royalty, provided it isn't their own." --Gregory McNamee

Kings, queens, nobles, lords, ladies and guffaws.......2007-10-07
I read this excellent book, here in Brazil. This book is very fun.Kings, queens are the focus of this excellent book, but counts, barons, lords and even artists are also present.
This very fun book tells about three centuries of madness, debautchery, drug adiction, sex, adultery, gays, lesbians, etc. among kings, queens, lords, ladies, nobles in Europe.
If you want to read history and to laugh, this book is an excellent choice. As is book concludes and also shows that monarchy can be laughable, but as an institution it is far from dead worldwide.
I am glad I didn't buy this book..........2007-09-24
...I found it at my local library. It's like reading news from National Enquirer! The author sounded like a cheesy tour guide:
* Louis XVI was mistakenly referred to as Louis XIV's great-grandson
* Louis XIV's sister-in-law was an English princess, somehow the author decided to move her birth place to Austria
* Perhaps the author felt sorry for Louis XV, an only child orphaned at age two, so he made Louise de la Valliere, the well-known mistress of Louis XIV who left Versailles to become a Carmelite nun, his sister
...there are just too many obvious and laughable errors, makes you wonder if the author has ever heard of the word 'Google'!
A purchase that I regret.......2007-08-07
This book was not at all what I had expected. What I thought I purchased was a book with amusing anecdotes about European royalty. What I ended up buying was a book filled with gossip, rumors, and just plain old trash. I could not even bring myself to finish it. Why taint the memory of anyone who is not alive to defend themselves? What ever happened to respect for the dead?
This book is not worth the paper that it is printed on. Period.
Titillating but many glaring errors in facts.......2007-07-14
I enjoyed reading this light treatment of the royals of Europe, but was seriously distracted by the numerous errors in facts regarding names and relationships. As a retired professor of history, I find this to be very poor editorial work on the part of both the author and his editorial "professional" at the publisher! Just a couple of examples of what I consider serious errors:
(1) p. 94 - "Louis [i.e., Louis XIV of France] was at one time enamored of his new sister-in-law, the buxom Austrian Princess Henrietta." This Louis had only one brother, Prince Philip of Bourbon, Duke of Orleans, who married twice: (1) Princess Henriette Anne of England, daughter of Charles I, King of England, and his wife, Princess Henrietta Maria of France; and (2) Elizabeth Charlotte, Countess Palatine of Simmern, daughter of Charles Louis, Elector Palatine, and his wife, Charlotte of Hesse-Cassel. There was NO SISTER-IN-LAW who was a 'buxom Austrian Princess Henrietta."
(2) Likewise, the entire treatment of Prince Philip of Bourbon, Duke of Orleans, the brother of Louis XIV, emphasizes the numerous heterosexual activities he supposedly had with multitudinous women....yet it is a confirmed fact that his primary sexual nature was homosexual and was known for his "mignons" and the way he and his followers dressed and cavorted at Versailles and other places.
(3) p. 113 - "Alphonso [i.e., Alfonso XII of Spain] plunged into an almost suicidal depression from which he never quite recovered. He regained his poise sufficiently to honor his dynastic obligations, and a year later was remarried to Maria, daughter of the star-crossed Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand."
The Iberian rulers named Alfonso (in English) rarely if ever had their names written as Alphonso...rather as Affonso. As for this second marriage, (and not technically a "remarriage" since the couple had never been married before to each other) the cited bride, Maria, was not called just Maria, since almost every daughter of the Austria and Spanish dynasties was named Maria + other names. She was actually named Maria Christina (Cristina)and was NOT the daughter of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his morganatic wife, Countess Sophia, but the daughter of Archduke Charles Ferdinand of Austria-Teschen and his first cousin-wife, Archduchess Elizabeth Francesca of Austria-Hungary.
So if readers are seeking factual history, they need to read this book with the caution that the gossip is more important to the author and publisher than the historical facts.
Thats it!! I'm now a complete Republican.......2007-06-22
I'm an Australian, for those of you unaware of our nation's attitude to Great Britain vis a vis our colonial past, we are still a 'constitutional monarchy'. This means that even after a fairly recent referendum to change the constitution and declare ourselves a republic, the Australian people STILL voted to retain our ties with the queen and remain linked to our past within the 'Commonwealth'. My attitude personally was that the year 2001, marking 100 years of 'Federation', was probably a very good time to also declare ourselves a nation in its own right completely. A republic. This didn't happen.
That said, like the many Australians who voted to retain ties with the English monarchy, I still harboured this bizarre affection for the English Royal Family, in my case not enough to actually vote that we should still recognise the queen as some kind of fairy godmother figure head constitutional monarch, more a sense of shared identity and ethnicity. I KNOW this is completely bogus, we are a very multicultural country right in the middle of Asia and the pacific islands. Even bathed as we are now in American cultural imperialism, most Australians still chose to affirm their British heritage, mythical or not. That's the picture here and now I WILL talk about the effect of this book on me personally.
Royal Babylon has in one stroke completely cleansed me of any notions that it is kind of a cute idea to let the British Royal family linger in the background of our nation's future. It also woke me up completely to the fact that they really aren't even 'British'. I'm more British than the Royal family!! And I'm 4th or 5th generation Australian!! Beyond that, I will guarantee that this horrific documented history of inbreeding, madness, STDs, syphilis, inbreeding, mass philandering, inbreeding, Nazi sympathising and inbreeding again will cure ANY reader of proceeding beyond mere curiousity to affection for the idea of monarchy.
What a sick, sick history!! Almost a milennium of mass suffering, war, national upheaval and slaughter for the majority of people while a very very priveleged minority wallowed in massive excess and madness for no better reason than a documented history of inbreeding (the royal lineage) and a fairly savvy sense of self-preservation (and the funds to ensure it).
This book doesn't cover just the British Royal family, it is a history of all the royal families in Europe. It is an easy read, it's not a heavy historical tome, but it succeeds where these fail: by unrolling almost endlessly the history of insanity and excess in an easily digested format. I've read a lot of history and was familiar with the more obvious figures of royal lunacy like Ludwig of Bavaria, Henry viii, George the Regent, the Romanovs (enough said), Catherine the Great (earlier), but I've never seen it compressed and presented like this and as it stands, Royal Babylon is a damning indictment of the divine right of anyone to rule anybody and the modern day equivalent of retaining these people at vast expense to the average person for no good reason.
The author is circumspect about the current royal families, referring once to Prince Charles as a 'frankenstein' and making the point that of the 10 royal families that remain in Europe, 7 are heavily related to the British royal family. But honestly, at the end of this book it's a case of 'nuff said!'. It certainly did it for me, I am now completely an avowed Republican!

The best book about Exercise Tiger.......2004-10-01
Okay, I may be a bit biased here, because my grandfather was a part of Exercise Tiger and is actually pictured in the book, but this is the best book about this topic that I've found. I've read the other books talking about Slapton Sands and Exercise Tiger, but as far as I'm concerned, none of them hold a candle to this one.
Just for extra info about the topic, National Geographic published an article in the June 2002 issue that talks briefly about Exercise Tiger.
Book Description
The author explains the theoretical underpinnings of generalized linear models so that researchers can decide how to select the best way to adapt their data for this type of analysis. Examples are provided to illustrate the application of GLM to actual data and the author includes his Web address where additional resources can be found.
Book Description
Viktor Schauberger, 1885-1958, was a radical pioneer of the study of the subtle energies in nature and the importance of living water in all natural processes. From unusually detailed observations of the natural world, he pioneered a completely new understanding of how nature works. He foresaw, and tried to warn against global waste and costly ecologial destruction of our age. Here are his insights in contemporary, accessible language.
His amazing discoveries--which address sick water, ailing forests, climate change and, above all, renewable energy--have dramatic implications for how we need to work with nature and its resources. Protesting the harmful effects of modern technology, Schauberger applied his theories to create prototypes for pollution-free energy machines.
Customer Reviews:
INCREDIBLE BRILLIANT MOST IMPORTANT BOOK.......2007-01-11
Mr. Bartholomew, this is one of the greatest books I have ever read. I would say that it is the greatest if it wasn't for all the trinkets of truth that I have picked up reading countless other fat books and articles that have only touched what you fully expressed in the first 25 pages. It even looks lovely. I have not finished it yet, it just came in the post an hour or so ago this morning and I am up to page 25.
I have flicked through all the numerous, delightful illustrations, which on their own are the eye in the needle through which an infinite thread of knowledge, purpose, love and spirituality can come through. Never have I ever felt so validated in such a decaying world. The so called greatest of philosophers seem like cowardly politicians next to Schauberger. Your book is a bright light that shines enabling us to see everything's true place. We are all blessed with the wonderful opportunity to be validated and empowered by Schauberger and face what I believe is humanity's darkest moment. I will get everyone to read this. You have done a wonderful job of making his work available to the public, through just the mere 25 pages I have read.
Informative!!.......2007-01-11
An excellent book which covers all aspects of this extraordinary man's life and work. Essentiall it covers everything! Not too deep in technical detail but with such a wide scope, it does justice to the material. An excellent book for anyone interested in conservation and nature. Highly recommended!
Author's Comments.......2005-11-12
As a publisher of mind-body-spirit books for 35 years, I felt that of all the books I had published, the 6 books on Viktor Schauberger's insights into Nature's workings were the most significant. However, when I realised that they appealed mainly to a more specialised audience, I decided to write Hidden Nature, to bring Schauberger's topical research up to date for a wider audience. I was part of the editorial team that published Rachel Carson's Silent Spring in 1962, and ever since have been campaiging against our society's violation of Nature.
One of the best books on Schauberger.......2005-11-12
Alick Bartholomew has done a fantastic job in the writing of this book. While the few other books on Schauberger, most notably the books Living Energies, and the Eco-Technology series from Callum Coats, and of coarse, Olof Alexanderson's Living Water (the original pioneer) disect Schauberger's work...Alick puts it in simple, easy to read and understand words.
Many times I found that Coats' literal translation from German to English a bit much to take. Bartholomew takes all of Schauberger's conceptual ideas, and breaks them down into a series of (shall we say) modern English, comprehendable, and brilliant formats. The work is quite simply excellent. There were a number of times when I read through Callum Coats writings and was left with an unmistakable feeling of "what the heck did I just read...!" Not so with Bartholomew's writing.
Chapters include: Schauberger's Vision; Different Kinds of Energy; Attraction & Repulsion of Opposites; Nature's Patterns & Shapes; Energy Production; Motion, Key to Balance; Atmosphere/Electricity; The Nature of Water; Hydrological Cycle; Formation of Springs; How Rivers Flow; Supplying Water; The Role of the Forests; Tree Metabolism; Soil Fertility and Cultivation; Organic Cultivation; The Energy Revolution; Harnessing Implosion Power; Viktor Schauberger & Society and more.
I am not trying in any way to detract from buying one of Coats' books - they are a wealth of information, and the work is simply outstanding. What Bartholomew has done with HIS book, is put it in language that anyone can easily understand and comprehend in its entirity. The book is very well written, the illustrations are excellent, and all-in-all, it's probably the best book to start with in your exploration of Viktor Schauberger.
