After the war, the French continued to see themselves as major players in the Western hemisphere and shaped their policies to limit the growth and power of the new nation. The notorious XYZ affair, involving French efforts to undermine the government of George Washington, led to an undeclared naval war with France in 1798. During the Civil War, the French supported the Confederacy and installed a puppet emperor in Mexico.

In the twentieth century, Americans clashed with the French repreatedly. The French victory over President Wilson at Versailles imposed a short-sighted and punitive settlement on Germany that paved the way for the rise of fascism in the 1930s. During World War II, Vichy French troops killed hundreds of American soldiers in North Africa, and diehard French fascist units fought against the Allies in the rubble of Berlin. During the Cold War, Charles DeGaulle yanked France out of NATO and obstructed our efforts to roll back Soviet expansion.

The legacy of French imperial power has been no less disastrous. The French left Haiti in a shambles, got us into Vietnam, and educated many of the world’s worst tyrants at their elite universities, including Pol Pot, the genocidal Cambodian dictator. The fascist Baath regimes in Iraq and Syria are another legacy of failed French colonialism.

Americans have been particularly irritated by French cultural arrogance—their crusades against American movies, McDonalds, Disney, and the exclusion of American words from their language have always rubbed us the wrong way. This irritation has now blossomed into outrage. Our Oldest Enemy shows why that outrage is justified.

As an American living in France for the third time, I have to admit... I couldn't stomach this book enough to read the entire thing. At the end of each chapter I kept asking myself "Are they writing in this tone to get the reader's attention?" So I finally jumped to the last few chapters to find that I was, unfortunately, wrong. While I don't doubt the historical facts in this book, it was so one-sided with blatant french bashing that I finally just said "No way am I going to finish reading this!" I don't want their writing in any way to affect my behaviors towards the french, especially not in the way that they are hoping to.

I'm not even goingto bother to re-list this on amazon because I don't want another copy of it going around. It already went straight into the recycle bin.

Relations are already strained enough between americans and the french. If you are interested in understanding the history of why our relations are strained, its because of propaganda like this that sets the American mind so forcefully against the French. I suggest going elsewhere for a more objective approach to the Franco-American history.

Bottom line is, the USA would not even exist if it had not been for France. Our founding fathers got the schematic for the constitution from a Frenchman named Montesquie, and 3/4 of the troops fighting the redcoats at the crucial battle of Yorktown were French.

One can make a similar case for historical US relations with Germany, Italy, Russia, Spain, certainly Britain. Miller says France was only pursuing its own interests in events like the Revolutionary War and the Louisiana Purchase? Come now, doesn't everyone?

Not Bad, Not Great.......2006-09-29

I learned a lot form this book, but it is rather one-sided (I guess that's its point) and would have liked more debate. Hoever, it IS very interesting the long history of antagonization between the USA and its "Ally". Perhaps not THAT far beyond the normal tiffs friendly nations have, but still pretty telling. I don't know, however, how much of the long-past history is applicable to our current mutual animosity, but it's worth reading, nonetheless.

Accurate Book -- Good Read.......2006-08-22

Speaking as someone who is fluent in French and has lived in France for over two years, I was very impressed with how well this book succinctly and accurately recounts the history of Franco-American relations. Like many people, I have a love-hate relationship with the French. The food, culture, and language are second-to-none; other than my home state of Vermont, I can not imagine living anywhere else. Yet it is undeniable that the French are extremely chauvinistic and have a major complex about their loss of status and influence in the world. It is also true that their "friendship" with the U.S. has almost always been a relationship of convenience in which the French were pursuing a crafty counter-policy under the table.

France helped America win its independence from England, but only to stymie the Brits. Once the war was won, the French did everything they could to weaken the young American republic, with an eye on conquering it later. Rebuffed at that point, France tried again during the U.S. Civil War, supporting the Confederates, and toppling the Mexican government. In more recent times, France has attempted to boost its standing by harnessing international organizations for its own purposes -- quitting NATO when it was not allowed to run things, turning the UN Security Council into a three-ring soap-opera circus, and using the EU as a means of exerting control over the entire European continent. The French have an unrelenting quest for power, and are arrogant enough to believe they deserve it.

And it's not like Americans are the only ones who view the French this way: the British, Germans, and almost everyone else in the world have the same view of them because, well, it's true. Heck, even Howard Dean once said of France: "The French will always do exactly the opposite of what the United States wants regardless of what happens, so [the U.S. and France] are never going to have a consistent policy." Yep, that pretty much sums it up.

As usual, buyers should ignore the trolls who have posted virulently negative reviews here. Most of them see defending the French as their duty in a proxy war against the Bush administration. Based on their comments, most of them have not even read the book. Ditto for many of the left-of-center professional critics quoted above. As for me, I will drink my fine French wine and enjoy France's many cultural delights, while at the same time proudly presenting my middle finger to French foreign policy and national duplicity.

Unbelievably inane waste of time ...........2006-03-27

Reading this book caused me to pause frequently and wonder how anyone could commit such haf-truth, historically misinterpreted and totally uninformed nonsense into a book.

At several moments in the book, the authors actually seem to posit that the French state has as its single motivating factor the absolute destruction of the United States. This is simply neo-con propagandist culture war mongering conjured up by agenda driven authors.

I am continually embarassed how readily some people will forgo intelligent discouse and cultural understanding simply to jump on the rightist anti-France bandwagon of late.

Instead of wasting time reading this garbage, how about jumping on a plane and visiting France? 77-million people did just that last year ... 25 million more that the next most visited country (Spain) and approximately 3 times the population of Canada.

And, incidentally, France also enjoys the highest standard of living in the world.

The translator of the Yockey essay gave me a copy of the first edition of this book some twenty years ago. From what I can tell from the sample pages, this edition is just a reprint of the original, with a new cover.

Why the Yockey essay needed translation is an interesting story in itself, which Professor Oliver briefly recounts in his companion piece. Yockey, an American, wrote The Enemy of Europe in English and then translated it (or had it translated) for publication in Berlin in the early 1950s.The plates of the German book were destroyed and the English original entirely disappeared. However, one copy of the German typescript survived, and this was then "retroverted" into a slightly stilted Anglo-American idiom. Not a perfect replication of the original, but as good an approximation as was possible to attain.

Oliver's essay is vintage RPO--feisty, erudite, entertaining, viperish. Yockey's piece may be inaccessible to most people who haven't read any of his other writings. His political stance really defies categorization. He was a man of neither the left nor the right, a visionary without any slogans or nostrums for the immediate future. The uninitiated will find him an infuriating mass of contradictions. For example, the enemy of Europe referred to in the title is the United States of America. But Yockey was himself a patriotic American as well as a Europe-firster. To explain how all this fits together one would have to give a detailed analysis of Yockey's philosophy of history.

The closest thing we have to a present-day Yockey is Spengler--not Oswald, but the columnist in the Asia Times (atimes.com). If you don't have the stomach for Spengler in the Asia Times, then don't go anywhere near Yockey.

Francis Parker Yockey's 'Imperium' is probably the single greatest philosophical & political work since Plato's 'The Republic.' Unfortunately, its somewhat dense, overly subtle, rather lengthy, and frankly too difficult for many people to read. This book, which Yockey intended as a sort of explanatory epilogue to 'Imperium,' may be better suited for the purpose of inspiring already committed souls, and winning new minds to the sacred cause of the West. The fact that this volume contains a lengthy discourse on its contents by yet another of the foremost intellectuals and patriots of the post-1945 era, Dr. Revilo P. Oliver, is a much appreciated bonus.

Good for textbook.......2001-07-21

First of all, this edited book is designed to bring together multi-displinary academic areas, not least business studies, economics and economic geography, which are interested in the dynamics of the firm. It is nice and well structured in terms of economics of the firm. However, from a viewpoint of an economic geographer, some of papers which talk about economic geography of the corporate organisation are too plain, old fashioned. Nevertheless, it is recommended that this book illustrates excellent combination of attempts to understand the firm as a container, seeker and creater of competence itself.

Just wanted to weigh in here as a liberal who also teaches Spanish.
I loved both books, the one on Che and this one. I teach my advanced students not to buy into the mythology of Motorcycle Diaries. We study Cuba and Latin America, and the history of dictators such as Peron and Pinochet. We study the Dirty War and students come away with a much better idea about these two men who somehow have become symbols of freedom or revolution instead of the oppressors they are.

So be careful of buying into the propoganda that all liberals love Che and Fidel.

Ask a Cuban!.......2007-05-15

Back in the early 80's I was a stupid liberal who believed the propaganda in the media (agitprop) regarding Fidel being a "benevolent" dictator after reading a glowing book extolling his many virtues and painting a picture of a utopian Cuba. When my Nicarguan and El Salvadoran immigrant friends vociferously disagreed with me, I read "Against All Hope" by Armando Valladeros, my first book on Communist dictatorsip, which shook me to the core. I began to question my preconceived notions and embarked on a journey through the rich genre of anti-Communist literature by those who actually LIVED under the brutal regimes--Nien Cheng, Haing Ngor and Alexander Solzhenitsyn, among others. Their stories are distressingly similar, harrowing and painful to read, about the malignant ideology which crushes the human spirit and justifies beatings, murder, incarceration, and all manner of evil while masquerading as good, just and humane. I also read books by American authors who had been Communists, had second thoughts and left the "progressive" faith: Collier and Horowitz, Whittaker Chambers, etc. These wonderful authors turned me around politically and philosophically, and helped me to start thinking critically. I now apologize to the Cuban people (and all the victims of Communist repression and genocide in the 20th Century) for my previous naivete, but in my defense I was young, Democrat and had tried hallucinogens and marijuana, all of which clouded my judgement back then. Plus, I used to believe Mike Wallace and the liberal media. Big mistake! For some reason they are vested in their "progressive" fantasies and do not let the truth disturb them...and they all seem to hate this country which has given them so much. Very sad.

"Fidel, Hollywood's Favorite Tyrant" by Herbert Fontova is a very important addition to this genre because it offers history, facts, and story after story by witness after witness, about Cuba, Che, Fidel, and many of the prominent American sycophants who toady up to this corrupt, murderous, barbaric dictator. Did you know Fidel is one of the world's richest men (Forbe's magazine) and a master of propaganda, having learned from the masters (Soviets). This is a bitingly funny, touching and comprehenive book. Fontova is clearly passionate about this subject, which to me makes this book even more enjoyable. It is sorely needed because Fidel is finally going to his just reward in the netherworld--and the Cuban people may finally get a reprieve after 50 years (a half century!) of suffering and countless deaths. What happens next--in the very near future--is history in the making. I will be watching closely, hoping and praying for Cuban freedom, for the USA and the rest of the free world, and to see how the liberals in Hollywood and the media react. Will they hysterically mourn his passing or finally TELL THE TRUTH about this monster? Their reactions will say more about them than Fidel. Who do you believe--a rich American who flies to Cuba on a private jet and has a "personal audience," with Fidel, sumptuous food and living accommodations for a few days--or the average Cuban who has actually lived the nightmare? It will be very illuminating, especially when the obituaries and books are written and hidden stories emerge, as they always do after the death of a tyrant...Can anyone now alive remember how sweet life was before the revolution?

I love this book and cannot wait for Humberto's next book on Che. I find his information very well researched and reflective of his extensive and informed studies in Latin American History in which he has his Masters degree from Tulane University.

I am a first generation American. My mother left Cuba in 1960 at age 15 and she, like so many other Cuban exiles,have in fact been back to visit Cuba recently, and we have had several family members in Cuba visit and keep in touch.

Before Castro, Cuba was a very enlightened country. As indicated in Humberto's book, the per-capita income was high and the standards of living were high also. This was because Batista encouraged unionization and established a minimum wage in Cuba.

This did not go over well with the wealthy property owners or business owners. When Castro came about and promised reform, it was primarily the upper classes that supported him. They wanted to do away with the unions and minimum wage for their own economic gain.

The people that supported Castro were not the poor farm workers or laborors. The poor people opposed Castro as indicated in Humberto's book. They had more to gain by keeping Batista then they did by having Castro take over the country.

The Cuban people that backed Castro and Che were expecting socio-economic reform, not the political reform that was the end result.

I think more people should read this book. Hollywood glamorizes Che and Castro as heros that liberated the poor people of Cuba. Reading this book may help people to the realization that Castro and Che took this beautiful, tourist magnet of a country and turned it into a third world country that "not even Hatians" (per Humberto) ant to immigrate to.

Even more Miami lies.......2007-02-26

This author is incredibly biased and left Cuba when he was a child- too young to remember or understand anything. I don't know his family's story, but the truth is that most of the Miamians have never even been to Cuba and are 2nd and 3rd generation, and that the first wave of Cubans was not poor people on rafts- it was fascists who supported Batista, rich brothel and casino owners, mobsters, etc. Not a great crowd, to say the least. People love Fidel Castro throughout the world for a reason... check out "Fidel, the Untold Story" for a good documentary that gives the other side. I'm not saying Fidel hasn't done some bad things, but he's not even close to the Stalin that the liars in Miami paint him as. For all my anti-Communist sentiment, I have to say, this book is ridiculous. Anyone who actually believes that Cuba was better under Batista had better think twice about the sources they are hearing.

This is called a book, but written in the form of a blog. I was reading Fidel and instead of facts about the dictator or his rule, I was bombarded with a rant about the evil of the left and hollywood in America. Instead of true history this is a partisan rant.

The whole story.......2006-10-04

Few have tackled the problem of atrocities on both sides of the Missouri-Kansas border disputes that preceded and continued through America's war between the states. For that reason alone, Mr. Fellman's work is worth careful study. It is a great resource for the historian but not an easy read for those who are not passionate about the subject. The content is invaluable and it is only the difficult reading that takes away from its overall rating. For depth of study, there are few like it and it is therefore very highly recommended for study.

Succinct and penetrating analysis.......2005-09-02

The first book I have found that explains the whys and not just the hows of the slaughter that took place in Missouri during the Civil War. The author contends that, while most residents had pro-slavery sentiments, they were also pro-Union. Therefore, most of them were not pure enough ideologically for either side, and thus subject to punitive raids from both sides. I haven't finished it yet, but it is definitely the most incisive analysis I have read thus far.

Inside War.......2002-05-29

This is a very interesting, useful study of mentalities in Civil War Missouri. It covers guerrillas (by which Fellman generally means Confederate guerrillas rather than Jayhawkers), civilians, and Union troops in all their various permutations.

I found Fellman's scholarship to be generally well-founded, though he is sometimes a little credulous of sources -- there's one case where he quotes an unsigned letter to a hostile newspaper as if it were good evidence for an event -- and he makes some mistakes with events outside his purview (misidentifying Early's raid on Washington as cavalry only). In general, though, I found the research credible.

What disappointed me here was the lack of conclusions. We have description, and some analysis, but the book seems short on results. Particularly in his analysis of the combatants' regular army and governmental reaction to guerrillas, Fellman seems to contradict himself: on the one hand he chastises the Confederates as elitist, perhaps prudish, for disapproving of guerrilla warfare, and on the other hand he makes every effort to show just how horrible such warfare really was. At times, he overanalyzes; I didn't find the characterization of Civil War Americans as "Manichaean" convincing. You don't need to be a Manichaean to dehumanize your enemies in a war.

Despite these quibbles, I found the book valuable, certainly worth looking at for the study of mentalities in a region where war was literally at every door.

Psycho-biography at its best.......2001-01-04

I usually loathe any historical book which puts its subject on the couch, but this is a notable exception. Fellman infuses this book with his own spin on certain matters, but much of the interpretation is accurate! If you enjoy a "National Enquirer" approach to biography, then this is your bag, though a more intellectual, sobering and accurate analysis of events than a tabloid rag. Fellman delves deeply into Sherman's womanizing and the reasons behind it: Ellen, WTS's wife, was a passionless prig, obsessed with Catholicism and being the type of prim, straight-laced wife that Sherman would ultimately abhor. Can we blame him for repeatedly cheating on Ellen? Of course not.

There is a plethora of new information about Sherman's various affairs: he kept the handkerchief of one of his conquests after their rendezvous and wrote to thank her for the article. There are numerous excerpts from love letters to Sherman from his paramours and they make for some unintended hilarious reading.

Fellman is much weaker on the military end of the biography and his limitations show. There are numerous factual gaffes and the author is on safer ground when restricting himself to purely personal matters. This is hardly the definitive treatment of Sherman, try instead John Marszalek's biography (available on Amazon) for an exceptional and scholarly approach. But if you want a book focused primarily on the private life of Sherman, this nicely fits the bill.

This was a rather difficult book to read; not so much from any fault of the author, but rather resulting from an effort to comprehensivly cover a topic for which relatively little is known. I found this book provactive from an emotional point of view; the primary sources certainly make the reader appreciate the devastation that must have occured to the (not so?) innocent by-stander. However, the book suffers from a whopping lack of focus in areas, and becomes somewhat repetitive. In addition, the theses of particular sections are often obscure, as are the conclusions. Despite this, "Inside War" is a wonderful book to read, although I felt that it was stuck in a nether region between a descriptive listing of primary sources and a thesis driven examination.
