Slovakia split from Czechoslovakia and formed its own state on March 14, 1939. The Slovak State was born under the auspices of Hitler's Third Reich and became its first ally on September 1, 1939, when it took part in the invasion of Poland. The Slovak army inherited its weapons, equipment, training manuals and its doctrine from the defunct Czechoslovak Army. Though hampered by a shortage of specialists in its air force, armored units and artillery, it managed to field several division-sized units and sustain them during the initial three years of combat on the Eastern front. Its Mobile division fought its way all the way from the Carpathian Mountains to the Caucasus. In the last years of the war, the Slovak people became more and more disillusioned with the war and with their own semi-fascist government. These feelings led to mounting desertions in the fighting units, and culminated in the Slovak National Uprising in August 1944. Though the uprising was liquidated after two months of bitter fighting, it gave the Slovak nation the right to join the victorious allies and be accepted back into the restored Czechoslovakia. Though the Slovak army was by far the smallest of the armies of Germany's allies on the Eastern front, it was part of this grandiose "clash of titans" and deserves thus a place in the history of the Second World War. This book describes in detail the composition, dislocation and equipment of all branches of the Slovak army (infantry, artillery, armored and air force) and its operational history through the war years., over 250 photographs, maps, color plates, 8 1/2" x 11"

Good book lots of photo's and information.......1999-07-09
This is basically the only book on the Slovak army in WW2 that goes in to great detail. It has lots of photo's so you can see what the foot soldier whore and what gear they carried and what equipment they used. It also lists in good detail the vehicle's that were used. The history of the Slovak army I found to be informative and some info matched what my dad had told me (Slovak Army Vet WW2). My only critique would be on some of the illustrations pictures of soldiers, medals and insignia which are crude water colored pictures. I wish they could have done illustrations pictures like in the Osprey books (clear and detailed). I would highly recommend this book if your interested in the Slovak army in WW2. Their is no other book that I know of that can come close to it on this subject matter.
Book Description
The 1930s were a time of growing tension for the smaller states of Eastern Europe. Since the end of the First World War they had enjoyed an independence which most of them had not known for centuries, but this was now threatened by the growing power of Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia. Instead of combining for self defence, they were bitterly divided. The Munich crisis showed how little reliance could be placed on the Western democracies, whose power to intervene militarily in Eastern Europe was negligible. In effect this left the smaller East European states with little alternative but to become clients of either Germany or Russia.

Good look.......2004-07-31
I'll attempt to concentrate my remarks on what I think prospective buyers want to see - a description of what is inside the book; as with all MAA titles, different people want different things, some are interested primarily in uniform details, others in history.
This book offers a good deal of detail in many areas. As always, do not make this your sole source of information, but it is a great start on many subjects not covered anywhere else, not even the internet.
The book starts with an historical introduction to the politics of Eastern Europe, dividing Eastern European participation in WW II into 5 phases and providing some nice maps. It then looks at several different nations in turn - Finland, Hungary, Romania (mis-spelled "Rumania" throughout the text), Slovakia, and "Other Allies" - primarily Italy with a mention of the Spanish contingent. These "other Allies" have their own titles in MAA.
The overviews of the nations concentrated on politics and also have reasonably detailed orders of battle, including divisional compositions which also give an idea of how large their militaries were. The focus is on ground forces, with little said about air forces (and nothing about naval forces, for the simple reason that what little naval forces some of these combatants had played little or not part in the Eastern Front campaigns).
Nice touch was the inclusion of a chart with AFV national markings, and there are good detailed sidebars on the rank structure of the Finnish, Slovakian, Romanian and Hungarian armies with nicely done insignia sketches as well as info on branch/corps insignia.
Photos are good, and colour plates cover the four main nationalities well. Chappell is always good, and these seem to be some of his better figures; nice variety of poses and very clear details.
Comparing the info on Romanians in this volume to that presented in MAA 246, one can see that there are many details left out, but the basic essentials are all presented here. As a uniform enthusiast, I was pleased with the insignia information alone - this information isn't available anywhere else. Those looking for detail on equipment, armour, small arms, will need to look elsewhere.
Nice supplement to the other books in the MAA line dealing in more detail with some of these same subjects.
a very descreptive book.......1999-08-01
This book tells you the info and has very nice full color ilistrations that help you visulize the men.
Book Description
The Baltic nations - Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania - enjoyed a brief independence between the World Wars before being annexed by the USSR in 1940. The grim experience of Soviet occupation made it inevitable that after the German invasion of Russia in 1941 they would fight beside the Wehrmacht as allies against the Red Army while always hoping for restored independence. That hope was crushed again in 1944-45; yet 'Forest Brother' guerrillas continued to fight against hopeless odds for years after the second Soviet occupation. This extraordinary story is illustrated here with rare photos, insignia charts, tables of units and detailed uniform plates.

Very good.......2004-05-08
As an Estonian collector and researcher I have found that books dealing with the Estonian armed forces (in English) are lacking. While this book is not perfect it is a very good base for the researcher to use as a starting point. The photos and information in the book are at least good to very good, although some details of the history are not as detailed as they could be. Still this is a book that I would have no problem suggesting to anyone looking to get a start in the area of Baltic Military History - Webmaster www.estonianarms.com

Book Description
In 100 Missions North, Ken Bell recounts the harrowing sorties that he and his comrades flew in F-105 Thunderchiefs, the famous "Thud", in 1966-67, when pilots faced a 50 percent loss rate. What was it like to face these odds day after day? We learn that men sustained by faith in each other and joined by the unique bonds of combat can overcome anxiety, fear, and even terror to achieve common goals.
Customer Reviews:
One of the best books about the airwar over North Viet Nam.......2007-01-04
I was mechanic on the F-105 in Thailand when Major Bell was flying his missions there. I believe he has written a superb account of the trials, skills and frustrations the Thud pilots had during Viet Nam. He brought back many memories of the two years I spent in Thailand.
couldn't put it down.......2006-11-26
My dad, a 105 pilot who was there around the same time Bell was, recommended this book to me and once I started, I literally couldn't put it down. As other reviewers mentioned, you really feel like you are experiencing it firsthand. I think it's important to mention that it is written in a way that your ordinary person can understand exactly what is going on (something I feared before I bought it). It is an outstanding book and while I've always respected what my dad did, I feel I have 100% more insight into the extent of what he, and his fellow pilots, were up against-how they were able to face those odds day after day is almost unbelievable. The (physical and mental) strength and bravery of those men leaves me speechless and in awe. Thank you Ken Bell.
Captivating, Fast Paced Vietnam Air War Memoir.......2006-07-14
I first learned about the F-105 strikes against Hanoi in G.I. Basel's masterpiece; "Pak Six". Prior to reading that book, my concept of the air war over North Vietnam were the B52 strikes that were publicized, in the popular media, in the late sixties. The breavity of "Pak Six" left me hungry for more which Ken Bell delivers in " 100 Missions North" "100 Missions North" fleshes out the details and gives the reader a better idea of what the job, and life, were like for the pilots who flew the dangerous missions into Hanoi. While life, planning and debriefing are covered in more detail, there is still plenty of in-the-cockpit action, rocketing toward earth in full afterburner through clouds of flak to put the bombs on target.
A fantastic book not to be missed.......2006-06-09
Gen Bell writes it and you feel like you are there with him during the events he writes about. It is similar to G.I. Basel's Pak Six ( another must read). I've also read both of Col Broughton's Books and they are also "must reads" as well, but 100 Missions is a personal view of his experiences. I remembered the name Ken Bell from hearing about a mission he flew together with Col Broughton (and about ran of of fuel if I remember right), so knew that I had to buy this book. I am not quite done with the book and could easily read it non-stop, but want to savor it because it is that good. You get some interesting read ins to some of the personell that were at Takhli. I know I had an opinion of Col Scott ( not a positive one) and it will be interesting to read more about Maj Bell's thoughts of him in the book.
Though a Major when the book begins basically, he had no combat experience; wen to Nellis AFB for the fighter weapons school and then to SEA. His writing shows what goes on in his mind, his fears and doubts about the future and also the excitement of seeing combat. He tells about his mistakes and what he learns as he flys into RP6A and becomes a real weapon for the U.S. Air Force.
Fascinating insight into the air war over Vietnam.......2005-03-10
Ken Bell has the knack of keeping his audience riveted while imparting a great deal of information. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
I was brought up on WWII history so this was particularly interesting for me.
Fascinating too are the descriptions of interactions with the local people - both on the airbase and places where Gen. Bell went on R&R such as Bangkok.
Don't expect heart-searching or apologies for the war - Gen. Bell simply describes it as it was for a fighter pilot on active duty.
A great read.

100 Missions North/a Fighter Pilots Story of Vietnam War.......2003-04-29
This is not the type of book I usually read (War stories). It was recommended by a friend. It sat in a stack of unread books for a few weeks. I finally started to read. I was mesmerized, I could not put it down!!!! I felt as if I was right there with the author! It is a good mixture of what the war was like for this pilot, his revelry, his mind set. I have read it twice, it flows easy, and sets on the mind well. Read It!!
Tales of Air War in Vietnam.......2002-12-15
It seems to me as if stories about the U.S. foot soldier in Vietnam abound, but the Vietnam War was also a war Americans fought fiercely in the air. It stands to reason then that the chronicle of the F105 fighter pilot, who flew the most harrowing missions and suffered the greatest losses, is one of the more significant, albeit under-appreciated, tales worthy of telling. As such, Ken Bellýs 100 Missions North is an excellent place to dig in to the subject to appreciate a unique, by-gone perspective. Bellýs first-hand account of the 100 missions he flew as a Thunderchief pilot over north Vietnam in 1966-67 provides a superb, three-dimensional picture of his life at Takhli Royal Thai Air Force Base north of Bangkok, Thailand, one of two primary facilities for F105s during the war. Aside from the fact that Bell was a major at the time and thus missed out on the opportunity to live dorm-style in a hooch with lower-ranking officers, his story in many ways typifies the life of an F105 pilot of this era. Although his is not the only first-hand account of the F105 pilotsý experience, it may be the most satisfying.
Thud Ridge, Jack Broughtonýs account of his tour, for instance, although essential as a piece of F105 fighter pilot history, is not a straightforward chronological account of his experiences. Instead, Broughton picks and chooses subjects for each chapter, so although there is something of a running narrative, the text skips around a bit. Not a big problem but it can be confusing unless youýve been a member of a fighter wing. Therefore, I would also say Broughton seems to be writing more to a limited audience, the fellow fighter pilot as well as the military enthusiast; hence, although a good book regarding its subject, Thud Ridge is more for those already with a base knowledge of air war and squadrons.
Another top-notch book but with a broader appeal than Thud Ridge is G.I. Baselýs Pak Six. Baselýs book is quite an enjoyable read. He turns a nice phrase, recounts interesting stories, and is easy to follow and understand. Basel also has a good sense of humor that helps the outsider appreciate the F105 fighter pilot mentality. Why then is Pak Six not the first book to pick up on the F105 pilot experience? Just thisýlength. Pak Six has about half as many pages as 100 Missions North. In spite of the fact that Baselýs book was a pure pleasure to read, and I finished it in about two days, it nonetheless gets into and out of its subject too quickly. Itýs good to leave the reader wanting more, but I wanted much more.
It was after I read these two books that I came across 100 Missions North. Bellýs book is the one I wished Iýd picked up first. At 300 pages, it provides a detailed, nicely paced, chronological account of the 100 missions he flew. Although he doesnýt literally account for all 100 missions, Bell presents the highlights of his most significant missions and discusses life outside the cockpit as well. Like Basel, he is easy to understand and can tell a good story, and like a seasoned writer, is not embarrassed to confess his fears and mistakes while flying missions. Likewise, he provides honest observations about the world and people around him during his tour.
For anyone interested in this side of the Vietnam War, all three books are a must, and certainly, all three offer something unique that in total present a thorough picture of what it must have been like to be there, a subject of particular interest to me since my father was there too, but heýs no longer around to recount his experiences. Of the group, 100 Missions North is the most well-rounded regarding its subject and is certainly a worthy place to begin getting a grasp of life inside the cockpit while flying bombing missions into a region reputed to be the most heavily defended in the history of warfare.
100 Missions North/a Fighter Pilots Story of the Vietnam War.......2002-03-09
AWESOME! Outstanding, honest account of the frustrations faced by combat pilots in South East Asia.
100 Missions North.......2000-12-07
I am the author of "100 Missions North," and want to advise you that it has been reprinted by Turner Publishing, and is now available.

Michael Lewis, the author of Liar's Poker, which Tom Wolfe called "the funniest book on Wall Street I have ever read," now turns his eye to the peculiar method Americans use to choose their president. Beginning with the 1996 New Hampshire primary, Lewis tagged along with players both major and minor. Keeping his eyes open to the nuances of how campaigns are so carefully managed today, Lewis is able to make some insightful, damning, and often hysterically funny observations. The reporting technique is eccentric--who else would spend so much time with Morry Taylor, a rich man who ran for president in what amounted to a vanity campaign--but it works. Lewis has written a very good book that could be shelved under both humor and public affairs.
Book Description
A wickedly funny and astute chronicle of the 1996 presidential campaign--and how we go about choosing our leaders at the turn of the century. In it Michael Lewis brings to the political scene the same brilliance that distinguished his celebrated best-seller about the financial world, Liar's Poker.
Beginning with the primaries, Lewis traveled across America--a concerned citizen who happened to ride in candidates' airplanes (as well as rented cars in blinding New Hampshire blizzards) and write about their adventures. Among the contenders he observed: Pat Buchanan, a walking tour of American anger; Lamar Alexander, who appealed to people who pretend to be nice to get ahead; Steve Forbes, frozen in a smile and refusing to answer questions about his father's motorcycles; Alan Keyes, one of the great political speakers of our age, whom no one has ever heard of; Morry Taylor--"the Grizz"--the hugely successful businessman who became the refreshing embodiment of ordinary Americans' appetites and ambitions; Bob Dole, a man who set out to prove he would never be president; and Bill Clinton, the big snow goose who flew too high to be shot out of the sky.
We watch the clichés of this peculiar subculture collide with characters from the real world: a pig farmer in Iowa; an evangelical preacher in Colorado Springs; a homeless person in Manhattan; a prospective illegal immigrant in Mexico. The politicians speak and speak, often reversing positions, denying direct quotations, mastering the sound bite, dodging hard questions, wreaking havoc on the English language. Spin doctors spin. Rented strangers (campaign workers) proliferate. One particular toe sucker goes awry. Ads are honed to misrepresent and distort. Money makes the world go round.
And the citizens are left dumbfounded or cheering empty platitudes. When trail fever breaks on Election Day, half of America's eligible voters stay home.
This book offers a striking look at us and our politics and the mammoth unlikelihood of connection between the inauthentic modern candidate and the voter's passions, needs, and desires. In telling the story, Michael Lewis once again proves himself a masterful observer of the American scene.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent, even at ten years old.......2007-05-16
My copy is titled "Trail Fever", but it's the same book. I picked it up in the library lobby self-service carousel for a buck, mainly because I recognize Mr. Lewis as the author of MoneyBall. Boy am I glad I did - provided you're old enough to recall the 1996 presidential campain, this is a great read, telling you everything that newspaper editors refuse to. He could write about paint and make it fascinating, sort of like a witty John McPhee. I've polished it off over a number of evenings and it's been eagerly turned to. Of course, now that I'm done it's going back to the carousel.
Different and Entertaining.......2005-08-26
Entertaining book following the Republican Primaries of 1996. You learn a lot about the candidates that you may have never known, and even more so about the candidates you never even knew. There is a lot of focus on Morey Taylor. For some reason, I never remembered him, but liked a lot about him after reading this book. Good entertaining read. Primarily for political junkies.
Delightful.......2005-07-25
In Losers, Michael Lewis gives the reader a fun ride on the campaign planes and busses of the also ran candidates in 1996.
He provides insights and humor about those candidates and the political system we use in our fair land to elect our presidents.
Whether your political preferences tilt to the Left or the Right, you'll learn from and enjoy this book. You'll laugh out loud a few times, too.
I am a Yellow Dog Democrat and finished the book with a real appreciation of one of Lewis' heroes, John McCain. Oh, that McCain had prevailed in 2000 instead of the person who did.
Morry Taylor for President!!.......2004-04-15
This is a pretty typical Michael Lewis read: exceptionally descriptive, hilarious and insightful. He does great work seeing the various campaigns for what they are; and is able to stay objective throughout the experience, though obviously he forms a special connection to Morry Taylor.
This is an entertaining book from a skilled writer.
Could Not Stop Laughing.......2003-01-02
I have read the authors other two books and found them average at best. I tried this book because of the good customer reviews here and that it was very inexpensive used. What a side splitting, could not put down book this turned out to be. His wit hit high form with this book, I really fell in love with his descriptions of the race and candidates. Funny and smart comments kept coming at the reader almost if a comedy team were working on the book instead of one writer. OK the book is not the dry step by step look at the campaign that you would get with some other authors but that is part of the fun. If you read this book with say The Choice by Woodward, you get a great look at the election process and the probably would gain a better understanding of American politics.
My only gripe would be that he did not spend as much time on the Democrats as he did on the Republicans, but I understand that the Republicans really had the race and the characters for the book. I guess I just wanted more being the greedy person I am. This was a funny book and just keeps moving the whole time you are reading it. A great lighter book to read if you are interested in politics.

Death is part of life.......2004-12-14
It's true, there's a euthanasia section. It constitutes two pages of a 225-page book. Anyone not comfortable with the methods listed is free to have a veterinarian euthanize the animal instead, if need be. (Of course, putting the poor dying creature in a car and driving it to a loud, high-traffic building that reeks of people, dogs and cats may be more stressful for it, but if you can't bring yourself to break an animal's neck quickly and humanely, you probably care less about its feelings than yours.)
One thing I admire about this book is the authors' willingness to admit when they have little or no experience with a species. I trust them. When they do have experience, they share it: instructions on the safe capture, care, feeding, administration of first aid, and release of animals from waterfowl to deer to foxes are well-covered. The "Wildlife and the Law" and "Wildlife Rehabiliatation Centers" sections are proabably way out of date by now (my edition is dated 1983), but this is an excellent primer.
Great Book!.......2002-09-10
This book is FILLED with useful advice on how to care for wild creatures. It takes a no nonsense approach to capturing, handling, feeding and caring for orphaned or injured wild animals. Perhaps the previous reviewer couldn't handle the candor with which the authors deal with the reality that some animals in some circumstances can't be helped, but if you can and are interested in effectively helping animals that are in trouble, this book's for you.
This is first aid?.......2000-07-15
I had thought this book was about first aid for wild animals, but as it turns out it's more like a manual for killing them. It's full of ways to kill but next nothing on healing wild creatures. This is the most disappointing book I've ever seen. I'd recommend that anyone interested in truly helping animals avoid this book...
