    Book Description

The “juggling act” of work and family that has characterized life in the past couple of decades has become a significant focus of those interested in the social condition. Editors Toby L. Parcel and Daniel Cornfield draw on two major themes for this volume: First, that crucial to an understanding of the interplay between work and family is an acknowledgment of the varied ways time influences work and family processes—and outcomes. This book looks at time in both the macro historical sense as well as through examination of the more quotidian choices involved in balancing work and family. Second, Parcel and Cornfield consider the social policy implications that inhere in these essays. Contributors to Work and Family have been in every case encouraged to think explicitly about how governmental policies, as well as those of individual firms, can be derived from their research. This provocative collection is ideally suited to courses on work and occupations, family studies, organizations, and gender roles, taught in a number of disciplines, and will be of interest to scholars in these areas.

      Book Description

The Byzantines had a remarkably sophisticated approach to politics and military strategy. Unlike most of their contemporaries, they learnt very early in their history that winning a battle did not necessarily win a war, and they frequently bought off their enemies with treaties and bribes rather than squander men and matériel in potentially fruitless campaigns. The Byzantine army of the 10th and early 11th centuries, at the height of its power and efficiency, was the best-organised, best-trained, best-equipped and highest-paid in the known world. This splendid book by Ian Heath examines the Byzantine Armies from 886-1118, including the lusty, hard-fighting, hard-drinking 'barbarian' Varangian guard.

5 out of 5 stars Early Byzantine Armies.......2007-04-17

Your standard men-at-arms book, concise but informative text paired with colorful plates to accurately rescontruct the appearance of the Byzantine Army and her mercenaries.

5 out of 5 stars Another excellent piece of compact scholarship from Osprey!.......2005-08-27

My title says it all - Ian Heath's text and Angus McBride's art again make an invaluable resource for historians and students of art and history!

5 out of 5 stars Another excellent Osprey Book!.......2001-11-11

As typical for the Osprey Men at Arms series, this book has lovely color artwork, and excellent photographs and line drawings of equipment and people in clothing of the period. The arms and armor are well shown, as are various shield designs. There is a nicely written history and descriptions of the tactics, main conflicts, weapons and equipment of this historical period.
If you are not familiar with the Osprey Men at Arms series, I am sure that this will be a good starting book for your research into the subject. If you are familiar, then you know what I mean.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to the subject.......2000-06-30

This book gives the basic information about the organization, composition and equipment of the Byzantine army from 886 to 1118. There are many pictures but unfortunately most of them are not in color. At the end the author has also included a list of books that deal with the subject more extensively, for those interested. Angus McBride's illustrations are phenomenal as usual.

      Book Description

Here Virgil Wyaco, a Zuni Indian elder and leader, recounts his life in both the traditional Zuni and modern Anglo worlds. As a boy, Wyaco learned Zuni ways from his family and the English language and vocational skills in Anglo schools. Earning a Bronze Star during World War II, he killed German soldiers in combat and participated in the executions of SS guards at Dachau. His postwar career included studies at the University of New Mexico, federal employment, marriage to a Cherokee woman, and family life in the suburbs. Later, Wyaco returned to Zuni as postmaster and married a traditional Zuni woman. His election to the Zuni tribal council in 1970 quickly established him as an influential leader. His varied career demonstrates the heartbreaks and rewards of a Native American life bridging two cultures.

An account of Virgil WyacoÂ's life in both the traditional Zuni and modern Anglo worlds. His varied career demonstrates the heartbreaks and rewards of a Native American life bridging two cultures in the twentieth century.

5 out of 5 stars Life in Zuni -- by an insider.......2000-09-21

This is a magnificent book, written with skill, sensitivity, insight and the gentle teasing humor that is characteristic of Zuni. After reading it, anyone will easily understand why Tony Hillerman is still an "outsider" to many Native Americans.

My dealings with the Zunis began in 1967, when I began writing stories about some aspects of life in Zuni and was honored enough to be the recipient of some of their teasing. It's a good place to start: British humor centers on clever word plays, American humor is blunt slapstick, while the essence of Zuni humor is kindly and gentle teasing.

After all, they've lived and prospered in the Southwest for as far back as science can trace. In Zuni terms, they've been here since the beginning of the world. They learned to live in one of the harshest climates of the United States without depending on outsiders. It's only since the coming of the Anglos, which Wyaco portrays as oddball outsiders who vary from insensitivity cruelty to bumbling kindness, that many Zunis have become dependent upon a sometimes crazy American world.

His experiences in World War II, which included winning the Bronze Star, are an example. The all-Anglo draft board in Gallup, which easily filled its quotas by drafting Indians, shipped him off to Santa Fe for his medical. He wanted to join the Navy to get out of walking, but was rejected because he'd once suffered three broken ribs when he was kicked by a horse. So, the draft board tried again and sent him off to the Army where he was accepted, even though he'd have to march every day.

"It didn't make any sense then. It doesn't now," he writes. The book is filled with such examples of non-Zuni illogic. As a combat rifleman, he killed his share of Germans. He was among the troops who liberated Dachau, and was horrified at how the SS guards had treated the dead. He writes the dead "looked like juniper firewood just unloaded from a pickup truck, no more human than that, all naked and skinny.

"The Zunis don't even kill birds without asking permission," he states. "To the Zuni, death is a transition time that must be handled with love and respect by one's closest family. A person's body and hair must be washed, rubbed with corn meal, and pointed to the west toward Kothluwalawa, with prayers to guide the departed spirit on the way."

Wyaco was one of a dozen GIs who summarily executed 60 or so Dachau guards, who had surrendered without firing a shot. He says, "I've never felt any remorse for my part in that execution. Those SS guards were more like witches than like men. They'd already lived too long." When he went home, a medicine man brushed him with a wing feather from an eagle and blessed him with corn meal to wipe away such bad spirits from the war.

It's the only incident in the book that made him really angry. The rest is an insight into traditional Zuni life. It was written by J. A. Jones, a novelist and anthropologist who became a friend of Wyaco after the war. Jones did a superior job, retaining the gentle teasing humor and manner of speaking that is characteristic of Zuni. It is an art Hillerman never mastered, his books present acculturated Navajos dealing with traditional customs, but little of the "soul" of the People.

Obviously, Wyaco doesn't reveal everything about Zuni life. But then, as Wyaco points out, neither do any of the many anthropologists. He offers something they cannot; he explains the spirit, the meaning and the gentle humor of Zuni culture. It's something no outsider can do.

      Book Description

How do scientific principles work in the real world? Discovery, Innovation, and Risk presents brief descriptions of selected scientific principles in the context of interesting technological examples to illustrate the complex interplay among science, engineering, and society. An understanding of scientific principles is developed through the technology rather than in isolation from it. Drawn from significant contributions to modern culture that arose during the Second Industrial Revolution, examples depict events in each of the major divisions of engineering, touch on key principles in physics, chemistry, and biology, and introduce the important concept of risk.

Case studies in the first section emphasize technological developments growing directly from scientific discoveries. These cases include telegraphy and the origin of telecommunications as an application of discoveries in electromagnetism, hydroelectric power as an outgrowth of Faraday's work in electromagnetic induction, and the airplane as a product of the Wright brothers' scientific approach to an engineering problem. Case studies in the second section show that technological innovation can proceed without a full understanding of the underlying science, as in the development of steam power for use in electric power plants, the production of gasoline from crude oil, and the development of prestressed concrete for use in building bridges. The fact that new technological developments often bring risks is amply illustrated in the third section by case studies on vaccines, the greenhouse effect, and atomic power.

Newton H. Copp is Associate Professor of Biology and Andrew W. Zanella is Professor of Chemistry, both in the joint Science Department of Claremont McKenna, Pitzer, and Scripps Colleges of The Claremont Colleges, Claremont, California.

        Book Description

John Wooden is an American icon. Since he announced his retirement thirty years ago, “Coach” remains one of our country's most popular and heroic figures. What John Wooden accomplished as basketball coach at UCLA will never be repeated—eighty-eight victories in a row, ten national championships—but what makes his legacy even more amazing is how he
did it: with honor, integrity and grace.

In his research for How to Be Like Coach Wooden, Pat Williams recounts well over 800 interviews. The result is an inspiring motivational biography about a great hero of basketball and one of the most amazing leaders in history. How to Be Like Coach Wooden is the next dynamic book in the How to Be Like "character biography" series, which focuses on drawing out important lessons from the lives of great men and women. In this book, readers will learn from Coach Wooden, a beacon of honesty, goodness and faith. Wooden cared about winning in basketball, but he cared more about winning in life.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This Coach Wooden Primer is the Real McKoy.......2006-05-06

I was introduced to this amazing book when Pat Williams talked about Coach Wooden at the end of a day long product seminar for Merrill Lynch Financial Advisors. If you ever have a chance to see Pat, he is one of the most intelligent, to-the-point and engaging motivational speakers I've ever seen. My only criticism of his inspiring book is the title: it would have been much simpler to call it "The Coach Wooden Catechism."

For Pat Williams fans, this is one of seven books in his "How To Be Like" series, which profile the virtuous characteristics of winners. A scholar and a gentleman, Coach Wooden himself got it right when he humbly stated, "I'm just an English teacher. Shouldn't I be writing a book about Pat Williams?"

Each chapter expands on the virtues that made Wooden the greatest basketball coach of the 20th Century. So, `if you want to be like Coach Wooden,' be a person of character, love God, love your family and other people. If you want to build knowledge and wisdom like Coach did, strive to be a teacher, learn from the good example of others, and read good books, lots of them. If you want to build winner teams like Coach, work hard to be a team player, be a leader, be disciplined and patient. If you want to be happy in life, strive for humility, master the `little things', keep things simple, be honest with yourself, and remember that in life, we reap what we sow.

Interspersed under each of these chapters are the testimonials of hundreds of sports legends offering their personal observations of the greatness Coach Wooden exemplifies. Where Williams and his co-author David Wimbish deserve great credit is the skill they demonstrate in weaving together these accolades and facts. Williams spoke to over 800 people to prepare this book. In spite of mountain of source material he accumulated, this book is a quick and impressive read. There are dozens of books about Coach Wooden, and many of them are excellent. As the parent of four basketball crazy boys, I strongly recommend this inspiring book for young adults and athletes in any sport.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Succinct and frightening.......2003-04-13

AGAINST WAR WITH IRAQ: AN ANTI-WAR PRIMER is a frightening description of the Bush Administration's plan for world dominance. It points out that there is no tangible proof of any connection between Saddam and bin Laden, and that "weapons of mass destruction" is not at the root of the war. Rather, the Bush Administration is interested in controlling the second largest oil reserve in the world, which Iraq just happens to sit on top of. Iraq is also a good target in this plan because it is just a defenseless country, thus sending a graphic message to the rest of the world of our military capabilities. Yet another advantage of attacking Iraq is the fact that it lies at the center of the Middle East, providing the US a good opportunity to weaken the region's stability even further and establish a USA presence that can later be expanded.

AGAINST WAR WITH IRAQ: AN ANTI-WAR PRIMER also provides the chilling account of US crackdown on civil liberties in the name of "protecting our freedoms," and how other countries have followed suit. It also notes that terrorism increased during the preparation for war with Iraq, and that it most likely will increase if we *do* go to war (note: this book was published a few weeks before the outbreak of the war).

Most frightening of all is the revelation that the war with Iraq is just phase one in the Bush Administration's quest for global dominance. The idea is to scare the rest of the world, to let them know that the US has a right to attack whenever they feel, without sufficient proof of any wrong doing - this is called a "preventive attack" (meaning the USA can attack any country it *thinks* may be planning to attack us, no proof is needed). As this book points out, the great irony is that while the official justification for the war with Iraq is to do away with their "weapons of mass destruction," the war with Iraq will only increase weapons of mass destruction because other countries are now afraid of the USA and will want to stock up protection to defend themselves against the USA. We can strike whenever we want (boy, I love how those euphamisms make things so much prettier than they really are: unions strike; the US military is *bombing* and killing), so countries will need to protect themselves.

I picked up AGAINST WAR WITH IRAQ: AN ANTI-WAR PRIMER hoping to learn more about what is really going on. I found what is in these pages to be so horrifying that I almost wish I hadn't read it. I now understand why so many Americans believe that the war is about protecting our freedoms: it's too frightening to realize that we have a government that is lying to us this much and is willing - and able - to sacrifice innocent human lives in the quest for money.

2 out of 5 stars To Biased to be Beneficial.......2003-04-04

I purchased this book because I am a centrist on the war issue and was hoping it would present logical and cogent reasons against war with Iraq. While I was eager for persuasive and compelling arguments I was also expecting that the book would take a fair-minded look at BOTH sides of the issue and then reason convincingly against a war with Iraq.
It didn't do that, instead it took every pro-Iraqi statement as being the gospel truth while everything that was damaging to Saddam was relegated as disinformation. After reading the book I felt that I had just read a propaganda guide put out but the Iraqi Information services.

Where is the evenhandedness that is fundamental to deliberations of this magnitude?

Should not the specifics, both pro and con, be presented? Of course they should, but the book neglects this miserably.

I was also looking for a synoptic background of Saddam Hussein and his rise to power. Devoid of crucial background information, the reader is ill-equipped to make any deductions about what potential action(s) should or should not be taken. Remember the old saying: Those who do not know history are apt to repeat it. Regrettably the author believes that there is no relevance in the history of Iraq.
I was enthusiastic that the book would delineate how Saddam Hussein has changed and why he can be trusted in the future? In other words, what should be done about Saddam's reign of terror and mass genocide he has performed on people both before and after the Gulf war? It is of somber concern to me that the Dove's do not exhibit compassion for the hundreds of thousands of people who have been tortured, raped and executed by Saddam's regime!
Everyone is aware that the most liberal/anti-war organizations have written some of the most damning reports on this regime, for example Max Van der Stoel's who was the UN's special rapportuer for human rights in Iraq, reported to the United Nations that the brutality of the Iraqi regime was "of exceptionally grave character - so grave that it has few parallels in the years that have passed since the Second World War."

While the book has many weaknesses one of the worst sections (considering whom it was written by) is the assertion that a country does not have authority to bomb another country. The authors strangely back this up by using UNSCR 1411 and then seconded that with Article 51. While this is an interesting and novel way to say this war is illegal it would be easier to quote UN Charter Article 2 (paragraph 3 and 4) for this certainly has more weight than the authors argument. But even if you combine those two arguments together there appears to be some legally convincing reasons for war such as:

1925 and 1949 Geneva Convections (Treatment of prisoners, use of WMD, purposeful targeting of civilians)
Violation of the Vienna Conventions of diplomatic and consular relations
Violation of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation treaty of 1993
Violation of the 1948 Genocide Convention
        Violation of UNSCR 687

The above are 6 WELL KNOWN arguments for a LEGAL war; the book should have given at minimum a cursory attempt to discredit one of them!

To be fair the book did tackle one known argument for a legal war it is what is known as the legal principle of "anticipatory self-defense". It stated however that this has never been endorsed.

OH REALLY, I guess the authors hope that you have had you head in the sand for the last 41 years. Just a few examples:

        1962 Cuban Missile Crisis
1981 Strike on Iraq's Osiraq Nuclear reactor
1982 Exclusion zone around Falkland Islands
1982 Sweden's use of force declaration against submarines found within 12 miles of its shores.
        1998 strike on Afghanistan
        1998 strike on Sudan
        1999 Action in Kosovo

The most farcical part of the book is the claim that Saddam does not have the ability to build a nuclear weapon. The authors simply disregard 98% of the Untied Nations reports. They also overlook all of the illegal shipments of banned weapons, weapon parts, and logistical components that have been seized going into Iraq since 1991. The proof is extant; and well documented. In 1990 Saddam had a nuclear weapon sans the fizzle material. The vast preponderance of authorities agrees that Saddam will have nuclear capability in 3 - 5 years. But I guess these geniuses know more than anybody else.

The facts are clear that Saddam made more than $2 billion in 2001 smuggling oil out of the country. (Please refer to Petroleum Intelligence Weekly for more statistics) If you add up all the money he has made smuggling over the last 10 years, you know where he gets the money to build his WMD. Plus what little is left over he can add to his collection of billion dollar palatial estates. (Just imagine if he took this money and helped his citizens with it. Well, that would be the RIGHT thing to do wouldn't it)

I still feel uneasy about this war, but the more Anti-war books that I read with their simplistic argumentation, radical leftist interpretations of the facts, and general deception about the substance, I fell that I am becoming more hawkish every day.

For those yearning for an evenhanded treatment of facts about this multifaceted and difficult issue this is NOT your book. This book is a one-sided polemic that will only gratify those whom are dogmatically Anti-War.

Why two stars then? Not for content, but rather sympathy; for trying what might be impossible.

        1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2003-03-27

I read this book at a friend's house, and I must say that I found it wholly lacking in the sort of rigorous logic that you might expect from a book with its title. Many of the arguments selected incomplete data to support points which seemed transparently biased. I had been hoping to get an even-handed view of the subject, but to no avail. If you are looking to support a pre-determined point of view with half-baked facts and emotional assertions, then get this book. For everything else, look elsewhere!

5 out of 5 stars Good summary of why this war is aggression.......2003-03-22

Written before the current jihad began, but no less useful, this book outlines why the U.S. has no authority to unilalaterally bomb a sovereign country. Resolution 1441 stated merely a listed of extremely heavy conditions for Iraq to comply or else it would be declared in "material breach." It called for the convening of the security council to hear the inspector's report. There was nothing explicitly granting the United states to bomb if Iraq was declared in "material breach." Article 51 of the UN charter declares that no state can act militarily against another without security council approval or if they country is under immediate and sustained attack. The UN charter does not endorse the doctrine now explicity endorsed by the extreme reactionaries currently at the helm of power in Washington that the U.S. has the right to "pre-emptively" attack any country it feels to be threatened by, even if that threat is not imminent.

They note that the U.S. has obtained security council votes in an extremely compromsing way. E.G. cutting off aid to Yemen after it voted against a U.S. draft resolution back in 1990. They note that congressman Henry Gonzales drafted a bill of impeachment against Bush Sr. for the many "bribes and threats" used to get UN approval. In current times, it seems some backroom deals have been made with the French and the Russians to secure their existing oil contracts with Saddam post-war which is what the latter are really concerned about. American oil companies will probably have first pick of the oil resources. The Americans will install a pro-American government that will do America's bidding in the oil rivalries with OPEC, they write.

And indeed the authors point out that Iraq is not an imminent threat, that U.S. intelligence deny this. They note that Richard Butler reported to the security council in January 1999 that the inspection process had made Saddam "substantially disarm." They quote the conservative anaylst Anthony Cordesman that it is likely that stocks of biological and chemical weapons retained by Iraq after the gulf war have lost their viability. They quote Scott Ritter that the 800 or so mustard gas shells that Iraq is reportedly to have, does not represent any sort of option for them on the battlefield. Nor do the dozen or so blastic missles. And they do not have the technology to produce any significant amount of VX nerve gas, and the equipment they did have was found and destroyed by the inspectors in 96' and found never to have been used. They note that the International Atomic energy agency certified in October 1997 that Iraq was in "full, final and complete" compliance with its nuclear weapons program. They note in an endnote that the evidence about Iraq trying to gain enriched uranium from Africa is very tenuous, it simply does not have the infrastructure (this book was published before it came out from the IAEA that U.S. documents purporting to show Iraq's aquisition of uranuim from Niger were forgeries).

They point out, of course, Saddam's regime is unbelievabably bestial but that did not bother United States and its British lietenant when he was "gassing his own people" back in the 80's. They gave him substantial support to build up his arsenal of WMD. The link to Bin Laden is unlikely for the supposed meeting in the Czech republic seemed not to have taken place and Saddam would not want to give weapons to independent-minded fundamentalists who have a goal of overthrowing his secular dictatorship.

Most importantly they note that people seem not to care much about the humanitarian impact on Iraqis. U.S. bombing has and will continue to destroy much of Iraq's vital civilian infrastructure. Estimates vary about total casualties: from like 48,000 to 200,000. If Saddam does have any substantial WMD and is backed into a corner, there is no doubt he will use them. Various nations with bad human rights records like Russia, China, India, Israel have a green light to conduct terrorism in the name of fighting terrorism. Wahabi terrorism increased in late 2002 and will surely do so as a result of what happens in Iraq.

They note in an endnote that the dim-witted disciple of Jesus currently in the white house was not telling the truth when he said that Iraq was diverting oil for food money for weapons. Such money is placed in an escrow account in New York with purchases made by it directed by the United nations. They note that it is rather unlikely the president's claim that Iraq has possessions of drones that are capable of flying undetected accross other countries and U.S. military bases to bomb the United States.

5 out of 5 stars The truth is out there!!.......2003-03-21

If you've ordered this book and read it, then you've taken the first step to freeing your mind from all the garbage the media suffocates us with. And if you swallow these eye-opening books like I do then I earnestly recommed anything by Noam Chomsky, as well as these two books, which will no doubt enlighten you about the Bush administration and the war in Iraq: (1) War Plan Iraq: Ten Reasons Against War with Iraq (Milan Rai); and (2) STUPID WHITE MEN (Michale Moore). And if you love a good laugh, here's a satire on Bush and the media: The little samba boy (Jay Singh). The truth is out there.

        5 out of 5 stars Awesome & inspiring!!!.......2004-03-10

I loved this book! It brought out stories that I never heard in all the media blitz after this unforgettable and horrific event. It truly shows another side of the story, and yet they made it very clear that the book was "not to diminish the contributions of the men who lost or put their lives at risk at Ground Zero". I had hesitated and worried that this might be a "feminist - male bashing" viewpoint. Not at all!

It rounds out the story. Something that needed to happen. I feel more of a connection with what happened now than ever before.

I highly recommend this to all - men and women alike. I hope it becomes a standard for reading about women in history and should be in every home for pre-teens on up to learn more about what happened and to offer inspiration.

        Buy it! It's a keeper!!

Harrowing, engrossing, and well-written firsthand accounts put you right beside police officers, firefighters, and paramedics on that terrible day 9/11/01 (and afterward, too). I could not put it down.

5 out of 5 stars Heroines and role models abound!.......2003-07-10

Susan Hagen and Mary Carouba did an excellent job of bringing to the readers of "Women At Ground Zero" the fact that women also served, were injured, or killed at the World Trade Center complex in New York City. They knew women had to be there but yet the media didn't cover them. So they went in search of them. People forget that women are also members of the fire, police and medical departments around the country. They didn't "want the women...to fade into the background of American History" nor "future generations of children...believing that only men are strong, brave and heroic."

They interviewed women from the NYPD, FDNY, Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police Department (PAPD), and other women who were there that fateful day and many days thereafter. Each chapter tells another woman's story so be prepared to read 30 gut-wrenching stories. They also interviewed women who were at the scene in other capacities. AND something very few people know about-three women died that day while in the service of saving others: Captain Kathy Mazza (PAPD), Moira Smith (NYPD), and Yamel Merino (EMT). There are chapters about those women as well.

These women and so many others saw crushed vehicles, dead bodies and body parts, along with airplane parts. They witnessed more in a short period of time then most people do in a lifetime. Some of their stories are very graphic while others brushed over that part. They talked about what they experienced and saw, their injuries, feelings and more. Its no wonder they continue to have problems BUT more importantly-most of them have all returned to the jobs they held on 11 September 2001. They continue to serve their community. They are all heroines and definitely role models for young girls to follow in years to come.

This is a book well worth reading though if you are like me it may take you awhile to get through it. I admit I had a hard time reading each chapter. With my background I felt everything these women went through without actually having been there. Be prepared for your own emotions to run the gamut. Be prepared to relive that day and the days that followed over again through these women's eyes. But take the time to read "Women At Ground Zero".
