    Book Description

Just before his first child was born seven years ago, Steve Delsohn was told by an acquaintance, "You will be happier than you've ever been in your life." Three children later, Delsohn has come to appreciate just how true those words were. Delsohn's new book, 500 Great Things About Being a Dad, captures his lighthearted look at the joy, humor, headaches, and complexities that embody being a dad. This creative collection highlights 500 rewarding fatherhood moments with which dads young and old will identify. Some are subtle and simple; others are humorous and humbling: Hearing your sweet little daughter say her first word. Of course, that first word is "no." Getting called "daddy" all day. Seeing your daughter make her first contact in T-ball . . . and watching her run to third base. Overhearing your child's friend call you "a cool dad." You now have a valid excuse to stock up on Snickers and Pringles. The wit within 500 Great Things About Being a Dad makes it an ideal Father's Day or new-dad gift.

5 out of 5 stars The ultimate guide to Hitler's air force!.......2003-03-15

Originally published by New Impression in 1972, William Green has produced the ultimate guide for researchers who study the facts and details behind the ultimate failure of the Luftwaffe to win World War Two!
With all due respects to the History and Discovery Channels, Bill Green puts the lie to the History Channel's program asserting that the Messerchmitt ME 264 was going to be used to drop a radiological WMD on New York in late 1944. In fact it was 5 Heinkel He 177A-7's that were going to drop NERVE GAS on New York in a suicidal attack. This was later cancelled when General Patton's 3rd Army was about to over run the German air base at Bordeaux-Me'rignac!
As for the frequently mentioned theory that Hitler's insistance that Me 262 jet fighters be used as bombers was the reason that the Germans quickly lost the airwar over Europe, Green dumps that allegation into the toliet on Page 7 of this book in the Preface. The jet engines the Germans were using had a life of ten hours before they had to be completely overhauled! A fact that escapes most of the cable channel TV shows!
One facinating story from the book is the fact that a six engined Junkers Ju 390 V3 bomber in January 1944 flew from Mont de Marsan France to within 12 miles of the New York coast and returned to France in a non-stop flight of 31 hours! This aircraft weighed in at 166,450 lbs, fully loaded.
If you love technical details combined with a amusing view of the characters involved in the German Aircraft industry in WW-II, you will love this book.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic reference book.......2001-11-29

This book offers very detailed information related to the design and development of the many warplanes of Hitler's Germany. Green presents a good selection of photos of the aircraft with quite a few cutaway drawings and 3-views for almost all. This is a great resource for modelers.

5 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK IS A MUST FOR HISTORIANS OF WW-II!.......1999-06-20

William Green spent many years interviewing the principle characters who were responsible for building the German Air Force in World War II. Ernst Heinkel wrote an introduction for this book. For those of us who regard Green as the father of Military Technology Historians, This book is the final authority on the technical specifications and technical understanding of why Hitler lost World War II (thank God!)

                    Book Description

This lucid account of military developments around the modern world begins with the American War of Independence and the French revolutionary Wars and continues chronologically to the latest conflicts in the 2000s. It combines global coverage with thought-provoking analysis dealing not only with the military aspects of conflict but also with the social, cultural, political and economic aspects and consequences of such conflict. By placing the familiar or known alongside the largely unknown, the reader is forced to reassess the standard grand narrative of military history that rests on assumptions of Western cultural and technological superiority. It will be essential reading for students in universities worldwide whether studying modern military history, modern world history, history and international relations or war and society.
Specially designed to be user-friendly, Introduction to Military History offers:
                    * chapter introductions and conclusions to assist study and revision
                    * "voices of war" sourced extracts from the field of war
                    * case studies in each chapter to support the narrative and provoke discussion
                    * vivid engravings, plans, paintings and photos to bring the conflicts alive
                    * a 12-page color map section plus 21 other integrated maps
                    * annotated references from the latest publications in the field

                      Book Description

"Death is nothing to fear - and life without fear can be lived to the fullest."

This is Kimberly Clark Sharp's message from her extraordinary experience during the time after her heart suddenly stopped beating and she lay on the sidewalk, not breathing, and without a pulse. Swept into a peaceful loving place of brilliant golden light and warm comfort, she saw, for the first time, the meaning of life - and death.

Thereafter, Kimberly, with hamster Toto at her side, left Kansas for Seattle - known as "the Emerald City" -- to fulfill a destiny devoted to the service of others as foreseen at the end of her near-death experience. Guided by a new sensitivity to the presence of angels, demons and other invisibilities, Kimberly attained a Masters degree in Social Work at the University of Washington and began a career in medical social work that put her in direct contact with dying people - and people who almost died and came back.

It is the inspirational stories of these near-death experiences, as well as Kimberly's own life challenges in love, family life and the diagnosis of breast cancer, that form the core of this surprisingly funny page-turner of a book.

                      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Very Readable Account of some primary-source NDE's.......2007-02-09

The author experienced a brief NDE at age 22. She doesn't go into a lot of detail about this experience, since she "repressed" the experience at the time, most of the book is her account of her life afterward and how it was affected/changed. Through her work as a social worker at a hospital, she encountered a number of other people who had NDE's, and she realized that her experience had turned on her psychic sensitivity in such a way that she could empathize with these patients, as well as see angels and demons. Her accumulating experiences with people who had these experiences led her into being more overtly involved with the subject, and recalling and exploring the nuances of her own experience. Through this process, she has become involved in giving talks about how the medical community should respond to patients' NDE's, and being involved with NDE-related groups. The NDE and the lack of fear of death it engendered in her helps her as she goes through traumatic events in her life such as the death of friends, and personal health problems.

If you have read a number of books on this topic (such as by Raymond Moody, etc.) this book will be interesting due to the fact that Kim Clark actually reports the first-person version of a number of "famous" NDE cases which are quoted by Moody and others in their books, such as the story about the NDE experiencer who "proved" her experience by observing an abandoned tennis shoe on the outside ledge of the hospital, which the author later found and determined could not have been seen by anyone except someone "floating" above the hospital as reported. There are several other oft-told NDE stories in other literature which Kim Clark reports on in first person here - it is interesting to have a primary source for these stories.

The book is very well-written and one turns the pages quickly.

                      3 out of 5 stars A little odd..........2007-01-30

Although I enjoy the subject of near-death experiences, this story got a little out of what you might call the grip of reality. Sharp talks about battling demons (literally!), beams of light emanating from her chest, and having psychic visions. I'm sorry but I think the author is a little bit "off", to put it tactfully.

5 out of 5 stars After the Light.......2007-01-10

Very positive and forward thinking book. I couldn't put it down. I would highly recommend for anyone interested in the subject of near-death-experiences and how it can change your life.

                      4 out of 5 stars Ann's Opinion.......2006-11-23

This book is very interesting and worth reading, but I wonder why Kimberly Sharp has so much trouble with demons if she is a professing Christian. The name of Jesus and His power chases away demons. Read the book and see what you think.

4 out of 5 stars An NDE and Paranormal Experiences.......2006-09-26

Kimberly Clark Sharp writes a personal memoir about her near death experience at the age of 22 and all the things that take place afterwards. Paranormal and spirtual happenings follow her life.

She ends up working as a social worker and dealing with the dying. She uses her own NDE to help her become a counselor.

I did not try to judge any of the events of her life and accepted the story as it was told in the book. One never knows what others have honestly experienced and I am not one to question her personal accounts. They are certainly interesting and different.

It is wortyh reading. It will create some questions as well.

                      Book Description

'The First Air War' covers the war from the first tentative acts of aggression in the air in 1914 to the employment of massive air power by the war's end. Subjects covered include the early attempts to arm aircraft, the Zeppelin raids, the appearance of fighter 'aces', the early employment of carrier-based aircraft, the development of the heavy bomber and of night flying, and the creation of the Royal Air Force - the world's first independent air arm - in 1918.

'The First Air War' does not restrict its scope to the Western Front - also covered are air operations in the Middle East and Central Europe, the air attacks on British and German towns and cities, and the operations of the RAF in Russia in 1918 - 1919.

The book includes a number of previously unpublished photographs from various historical archives, all of which are accompanied by explanatory captions.

I love the subject of this book, so I did enjoy it. However, it is not well organized. It flips around from one subject and time period to another in a rather confusing fashion. Many better books on the subject exist (though a frustrating number of them are out of print) like The Canvas Falcons and Aces High.

                        Book Description

The first succinct and authoritative overview of the making of the modern Middle East, this lucid book brings a valuable mix of historical perspectives and contemporary analysis to a wide audience of readers seeking expert knowledge about this troubled and fascinating region. Giving a rich perspective on the region's historical and political evolution, the book traces the influence of factors such as religion, culture, and economics and illuminates events and topics currently in the news. With its broad thematic sweep and its balanced presentation of contentious issues, it is essential reading for general readers and students who want to better understand the world today.
Mehran Kamrava sets the stage with a concise discussion of the evolution of Islam and the religion's profound role in the region. He then looks at, in turn, the rise and fall of the Ottomans, the trials of independence and state-building, the emergence and fiery spread of nationalism, the two Arab-Israeli wars of 1967 and 1973, the Iranian Revolution, and the two Gulf Wars and beyond, including discussion of the invasion of Iraq by the United States. After tracing the consequences of these historical events for a host of political phenomena, Kamrava gives detailed attention to three pivotal issues: the challenges of economic development, the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, and the question of democracy. He also examines issues that will shape the future: population growth, environmental pollution, and water scarcity.

4 out of 5 stars Involved, very scholarly work on the 20th Cent. MidEast.......2006-04-07

This is the sort of book I have been looking for a long time. I've read other books on the Middle East which purport to have a similar focus, but which are instead incomplete, notably "Sowing the Wind". This book, by contrast, maintains the focus rather carefully and provides a concise history of the whole region. It looks as if the book was written as a textbook for (I would presume) grad students studying the subject, but really any intelligent person can pick it up and learn a great deal.

An issue with a book like this is the tone of the work, how well the author writes. Kamrava isn't the second coming of Hemingway, but he's not too bad, either. The book is divided into two portions: first, a historical section that gives you an overview of the region's history, and second a topical section that looks at various issues that impact the region currently. The first section is very readable, the second less so (who actually enjoys reading about economics?). The author, however, does a good job (for the most part) of not sounding like a university professor telling you about something, though he does occasionally use words that are obscure, especially in terms of sub-regions of the Mid East.

I still enjoyed this book, thought I got a lot out of it, and would recommend it. The author seems to be a hair more optimistic about the prospects for peace and prosperity in the region than I am, but he makes a good case for his point of view, and the result is interesting.

"The great Yellowstone to Yukon corridor is a dream worthy of the North American peoples. The superb photographs by Florian Schulz and authoritative essays by leading naturalists that accompany them give substance to that dream and added hope that it can be realized."—Edward O. Wilson, University Professor Emeritus, Harvard University

The dream is a connected eco-system through North America's Wild Heart—see what this means and learn why it is important. ·200 full-color scenes of a landscape and its wild inhabitants by an award-winning photographer ·Original essays by noted writers, biologists, and conservationists including David Suzuki, David Quammen, Rick Bass, Ted Kerasote, and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. ·Illustrates the principles—and the viability—of the Yellowstone to Yukon (Y2Y) conservation initiative

A grizzly bear emerges, one small detail in an immense vista of field and mountains and sky. A shoreline, still and empty but for the telltale tracks of passing wildlife. Golden peaks that roll to the horizon, starkly beautiful in the morning light. This kind of space, of solitude—of simple wildness—still exists in North America, outside the boundaries of any park. Photographer Florian Schulz documents the landscape, plants, animals, and people of an eco-system that is surprisingly intact up and down the spine of the Rocky Mountains. There is still time to make a difference: to direct the path of encroaching development and establish connections between the national and provincial parks on this course.

Essay contributors tell of their travels through the region and their experience of the land. They explain the need for Y2Y, based on new findings that reveal isolated nature sanctuaries to be a recipe for extinction. They set the Y2Y conservation program in context: a grand vision grounded on science; a practical plan that provides for economic as well as environmental sustainability; a blueprint designating critical wildlife habitat. Environmental conservation does not mean that humans must be excluded from the land, but we must act thoughtfully.

5 out of 5 stars Yellowstone to Yukon.......2007-08-30

I first heard the phrase "wilderness corridor" when I lived in California's Bay Area in the early 1990s. At that time, the concept was used in conjunction with a bike trail linking the entire Bay Area from Antioch to Oakland. One of the benefits of such a trail, , we were told, would be allowing wildlife to roam freely throughout the suburbs.
I don't recall how that particular issue played out, but the idea was--and is--a good one. Animals don't understand or follow man-drawn boundaries. They roam in territory that most likely has been roamed by their ancestors for thousands of years. Animals are guided by instinct, and man's attempts to limit them to national parks and protected areas is doomed to failure.
And so the Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative, or Y2Y, was born. In her Publisher's Notes, Helen Cherullo explains the concept as a "dream of a small group of biologists and conservationists--to link the existing parks in the United States and Canada with connected corridors into one intact ecosystem," stretching from Yellowstone National Park, along the Rocky Mountains and through the Yukon. It is 460,000 square miles of untouched land--the last undisturbed parcel of land in the two countries, according to Cherullo, extending 1,990 miles from Cokeville, Wyo., to the Arctic Circle.
This area of land, the Y2Y Ecoregion, is the home of grizzlies, 118 fish species, 10,000 golden eagles and hundreds of bald eagles, to mention but a few of its inhabitants. It is the traditional land of 31 indigenous Native or First Nation (in Canada) peoples, who have inhabited the area for more than 10,500 years. Less than 3 million people occupy the land at this time, but that is changing rapidly.
Florian Schulz, a photojournalist who has long championed conservation, tells the reader that the United States and Canada are making the same mistakes his native Europe did--all of that continent's "true wilderness" is gone, cut down for human use and cleared to develop man's idea of civilization. It's a mistake, Schulz says, that should not be repeated.
So he rounded up some of the world's most noted scientists: geneticist David Suzuki, wildlife biologist Douglas H. Chadwick, and biologist Karsten Heuer, as well as authors and journalists, to document the vast resources, the wildlife and the dangers of approaching development. Interspersed with stunning photography and Schulz's observations, this oversize art book is both visually stunning and a good read.
While obviously a conservation treatise, the book is so filled with magnificent anecdotes, facts, scientific studies and theories, as well as marvelous pictures of Nature and her children in all their glory, that one cannot just plop it on the coffee table and forget it, as we do with most "art" books. This one begs to be read, to be perused carefully. The photos call for our attention and admiration, the stories and concerns of the writers compel us to pay attention and take a stand.
The current practice of isolating specific areas as "nature preserves," according to biologists Robert H. MacArthur and Edward O. Wilson, actually contributes to extinction. In a book they published more than 40 years ago, they proved that "islands" of nature--small areas kept separate from other small areas--leads to insularity, which is detrimental to biodiversity and ecological health. Small "islands" harbor fewer species and fewer individuals of those species, and these small populations are more vulnerable to climate change, drought, inbreeding and food supply failure.
David Quammen, noted conservation journalist, points out the problems with bear management in the Lower 48 as an example of insularity leading to extinction.
This concept was one of the precursors to the Y2Y concept.
There's not room in this column to summarize the book--it's something you have to read, more than once, to fully digest. The overall idea of connectedness and attachment to nature is captured eloquently by Suzuki in the Foreword.
"For most of our 10,000-year existence, our species, Homo sapiens, lived in an intimate relationship with the natural world. ... predictable regularities were collected into a worldview, the sum of all observations, insights and speculations, in which everything, including the past, present and future, was part of a seamless whole. ... In such a world of elaborate interconnection, people understood that everything they did had consequences and therefore every deliberate act was laden with responsibility."
The words of all the contributors are as eloquent, as passionate, and as though-provoking.
But it is Schulz's photographs that catch the reader, mesmerizing us with the vision of mountains and lakes and rivers and animals. Schulz captures not only the images hew ants us to see, but imbues them with life: a grizzly eating a root, so close we can smell its breath; logging activities in British Columbia almost cause us to sneezed from the dust thrown up; the purple majesty of Mt. McKinley at dawn causes us to stop breathing for the sheer wonder of the beauty.
We humans are visual animals, so we will remember the images long after we've forgotten the text. But the views of this pristine land and its denizens should stay with us forever, and hopefully, we will embrace the Y2Y concept so we can see the actual places Schulz has immortalized in person, rather than as faded memories in dusty books, years after the original has been destroyed.
Readers interested in learning more about the Y2Y Conservation Initiative can visit www.y2y.net for information. Florian Schulz's images can be seen at www.visionsofthewild.com.

5 out of 5 stars Two hundred full color images showcase that landscape along with the people, animals, and plants that inhabit it.......2005-12-05

Yellowstone To Yukon: Freedom To Roam is a coffee-table photography book that takes the reader along with Florian Schulz on a visual journey of the Northern Rocky Mountain landscape. Two hundred full color images showcase that landscape along with the people, animals, and plants that inhabit it. Enhanced with original thematically appropriate essays by Douglas Chadwick, Karsten Heuer, Ted Kerasote, David Quammen, Rick Bass, and others, Yellowstone To Yukon is a testament to the need for conservation of one of our country's still wild, free, and open places where "bison move across prairies, wolves converge on the hunt, elk bugle across valleys, river otters fish the streams, and grizzlies roam the mountains". Yellowstone To Yukon is a welcome and very highly recommended addition to personal, academic, and community library Environmental Studies and Photography collections.
