If you're looking for a book to tell you what to do when your child throws tantrums, flings food, fights everything you try to do with/to/for him, you might need to find another source for those answers. But if you're interested in gaining a better understanding of where your two-year old is coming from, and why he/she acts the way they do, then I think this is a great book. I think it does a great job in explaining what it's like to be a toddler and explaining why they act in certain ways at certain times. If we, as parents, have a better understanding of them, that alone should help us in taming those behaviours that drive us nuts.

The only valuable (and non-redundant; i.e., not out there on the net) information I obtained from this book was the difference between an "active" and "easygoing" and a "shy" toddler. Did not give me any insight into what to do now that my 20 month old is throwing tantrums, screeching (sometimes with joy, sometimes with anger), what to do about "flinging food", "fighting getting into the car seat", fighting getting his diaper changed ... - in other words - nothing about how I might guide his behavior. I am still looking for a good parenting book that really tells it like it is.

This book deals with the advance and eventual destruction of Kampfgruppe Peiper during the battle of the Bulge in 1944.
Its scope deals only with this battlegroup as it ground its way through the Ardennes before being trapped and destroyed as it ran out of petrol and fierce allied resistance.
It is not a big book being a little over 180 pages and is a very easy read. It covers the organisation and equipment of the battlegroup and follows it day by day during the battle. There are a large number of photos, some reasonable maps and an interesting battlefield tour where you can follow the route Peiper's battlegroup took. There are also photos of how the battlefield appears today and what it was like in 1944.There are a number of interesting stories told by vets such as the duel between 2 King Tigers of Peipers group at La Gleize and 15 Shermans belonging to TF McGeorge where contray to popular belief both Tigers were knocked out.
The story is told from both the perspective of German and US soldiers so gives a fair coverage to the battle.
The massacre at Malmedy and other war crimes such as the shooting of civilians are touched on but not to a great depth.
What may have happened if Peiper had secured gas for his panzers at a large US fuel depot he missed by a couple of miles will never be known. If you are looking for an in depth covergae of the Battle of the Bulge this is not for you.

A fair bit of the text in this book went towards explaining why Sarah Churchill has been undervalued or unfairly treated in previous biographies. In certain sections this is helpful, in others it is very distracting. In some ways, I wish this biographer could have been a bit more objective about her subject; she made it seem as though Sarah's missteps in politics were completely out of her control, when in fact a healthy dose of tact and respect for other people's feelings (without betraying her own convictions, just with respect for others) might have won her more success in her endeavors. That said, for Sarah Jennings to rise from impoverished gentility to a wealthy and powerful duchess (not to mention founding a well-known and lasting dynasty) is not merely remarkable, but almost incredible.
Overall, the biography was very good, although I wish it would have had a family tree showing how the Marlborough family grew, who all the granchildren were and when they were born (not to mention which of Sarah's daughters were their mothers) and even possibly a chronology, as the scope of Sarah's life and the breadth of her story made it sometimes difficult to put certain events into context.

Sarah Churchill, 1st Duchess of Marlborough gained notoriety through three things:
1. She was a lady-in-waiting/best friend to Queen Anne of England. She took this position of power for granted, treating the Queen much like a dumb child. She felt it was her right to instruct the Queen on appropriate political decisions and appointments at court. When Sarah became too pushy and arrogant, the Queen severed the friendship, leading to a very public fall from favour.
2. She was married to the military man John Churchill, who defeated Louis XIV's French army in the early 1700s (A big thing at the time - remember England and France were arch enemies). This victory led Queen Anne to give John and Sarah titles (Duke and Duchess of Marlborough) and a huge government grant to build a massive palace with - Blenheim, which still stands today outside of Oxford UK.
3. Her direct descendents include Winston Churchill and Diana, Princess of Wales.
Ophelia Field has written a biography which covers all these events, and also tells us objectively about the woman herself. She does not attempt to paint a rosy picture of Sarah, who could be stubborn and domineering. At the same time, she explains WHY Sarah did certain things (based on letters she wrote to family and friends - many excerpts included), and why her political views were as they were. Crucially, she discusses how Sarah's support of the Whig party, her deep rooted belief in their righteousness, developed into a fanatacism which led to her fall from the Queen's favour and high society. Queen Anne is also brought to life as a woman all her own, though her reign was short.
This biography was informative, educational (about the political and aristocratic climate of the time 1680s-1720s), and fascinating. It portrayed a modern woman ahead of her time. I feel if I had met Sarah Churchill, I may not have liked her (she polarised people - you either loved or hated her), but I certainly would have respected and admired her.

This book is written by the leaders in each of the three areas of thermal systems engineering and it really shows. Keep in mind this is an introductory book and does not cover every part of each topic, but for an introductory class it is perfect! Concepts are easy to understand with very good supporting examples. I would highly recommend this book to anyone needing a brush up or a good introduction to thermal systems.

Its not that its a bad book, but that it was certainly not a book that I feel makes the subject easy to understand or comprehend. I feel that there must be other books, such as those in similar fields by Cengal and Boles.
If its prescribed for a paper I would reckomend getting it out from the library rather than buying it. I had to buy it for an open book exam, and am now having trouble selling it, no one wants it!
If you want a book to read to learn about thermodynamics try other titles, this one wont do your effort justice.
(I got a B in the paper anyways)

Walking on Water collects 12 brief meditations by Madeleine L'Engle on the nature of art and its relation to faith. L'Engle, the beloved author of A Wrinkle In Time among others, has written and spoken widely and wisely about the connection between religion and art. The gist of her understanding is as follows:
To try to talk about art and about Christianity is for me one and the same thing, and it means attempting to share the meaning of my life, what gives it, for me, its tragedy and its glory. It is what makes me respond to the death of an apple tree, the birth of a puppy, northern lights shaking the sky, by writing stories.
She believes that "[b]asically there can be no categories such as 'religious' art and 'secular' art because all true art is incarnational, and therefore 'religious.'" And "incarnation," in L'Engle's view, means "God's revelation of himself through particularity." In this book there is some slippage between L'Engle's autobiographical and critical voices. As a result, she often claims Christian significance for works whose meaning is not intentionally Christian. She admits this freely:
[B]ecause I am a struggling Christian, it's inevitable that I superimpose my awareness of all that happened in the life of Jesus upon what I'm reading, upon Buber, upon Plato, upon the Book of Daniel. But I'm not sure that's a bad thing. To be truly Christian means to see Christ everywhere, to know him as all in all.

"Walking on Water: Reflections on Faith and Art" by Madeleine L'Engle is exactly what I was hoping for in a book reflecting on the creative process and what it means to be a Christian Artist. She skillfully mixes musings on Christ, art, faith, service, and imagination. She says, "I learn that my feelings about art and my feelings about the Creator of the Universe are inseparable. To try to talk about art and about Christianity is for me one and the same thing, and it means attempting to share the meaning of my life, what gives it, for me, its tragedy and its glory." Ahh. And then she shares Leonard Bernstein's observation that art is "cosmos in chaos." Order in disorder. Isn't that what God is trying to do in our lives all the time? When we make art, we can appreciate what He is trying to do on a beyond-imagining, grander scale. This is just a taste of the wonderful insights from the writer of "The Wrinkle in Time" and "Arm of the Starfish." I strongly recommend it! Enjoy!

I can identify with her. I too struggle with my beliefs and have to return to the books that I have written, the stories that I have told to remind myself of what I already know. In this way all writers and all artists find the truths that they base their lives on by searching for them, discover their faith by exploring it, and grow closer to God only when they realize that they are straying once again.
Within her heartfelt musings on art, faith, and life, all those who feel that imagination and mystery are just as important as explanations and definitions will find a welcome companion. Christian fiction is not a sermon in disguise, it is truth wrapped in story--story wrapped in truth. I recommend this book to artists, dreamers, writers, readers, and believers. L'Engle claims that when we finish a book we want to be given illumination. And in this book she offers precisely that.

Only Flannery O'Conner has written a book on writing with this much spiritual insight and creative freedom. I picked up "Walking on Water" after numerous recommendations from fellow writers. Of course, I was already aware of L'Engle through her novels--I think "A Wrinkle in Time" and "A Wind in the Door" are brilliant--but I was less familiar with her nonfiction.
If you're a creative person on any level, and if you wrestle with life's big questions unflinchingly, then you must meet L'Engle in the world of words. This lady is such a unique individual, full of down-to-earth wisdom and to-the-limits-of-the-galaxy philosphical ponderings. With candor and anecdotes, with quotable lines and great grace, this book has the ability to breathe new life into tired, artistic souls. I know. Because it's done so for me.
the best book I've ever read.......2005-08-03
My mother-in-law gave this book to me on vacation this year. As an artist, and just a questioning human being in general, I found this book to be like reading my own thoughts poured onto paper. I couldn't seem to get though the words fast enough, but was a little sad as each page passed by, because it meant I would be closer to the end. This book is must read for everyone. I'm grateful that she took the time to write it, bcecause for me, it is a touchstone.

I consider myself a moderate in social issues and conservative on economic issues. This is a very relevant book. The author really understands how our government, at all levels, occasionally anoints itself with greater power than provided by the Constitution, to the detriment of regular citizens. It seems that this occurs more regularly in the West, where government controlled land abounds and political power falls below that of both coasts. The author, and the Foundation he heads, appear to have both the skills and mindset to stand up to the government and champion the rights of the rest of us. Good for them. Read and learn, and spread the word.

The United States is fortunate to have Perry Pendley and his Mountain State Legal Foundation. Pendley's most recent book, Warriors for the West, is one of those accounts that law students should read as Introduction to Legal Reality 101 and internalize as illustrating some of the problems that an ordinary citizen can encounter.
It is not that the federal government is deliberately malicious in dealing with its citizens; to so think would be paranoia. It is more that vast bureaucracies have their rules and guidelines, and for the well-meaning innocent caught up in the process, it often appears that even with the best of good will, the citizen will be wrong/wrong/wrong. And, if (s)he has the temerity to suggest the USG is wrong, it will be a painfully expensive and humiliating experience--and "common sense" is highly unlikely to be part of that process.
Pendley illustrates this reality in a series of highly readable case studies ranging from the grisly fate of those who encounter grizzly bears to why racecar driver Bobby Unser is a criminal. These stories would be funny, if they were not so infuriating. Over and over in the reading, one cries out for the official who would say, "Wait a minute; this is really too silly to continue." But you end with the impression that stopping the grinding mill before you are finely ground, is more a matter of luck (and good lawyers) than not. We need more Perry Pendleys; it is not only the West that requires warriors.

This book is filled with interesting but very disturbing true stories of westerners (and others) who must fight in the courtroom to protect their liberties and rights guaranteed by federal law. Although the author is an attorney, he writes for lay audiences and makes a very compelling case that government is much too big and powerful and its lawyers do not care about justice. The willingness of ordinary Americans to go to court for years and years is inspiring. All of the book is very well documented. I recommend it most highly!

Well, I was amazed to find that the table of contents of this book actually has no page numbers. And, stunningly, there is no index at all. So how exactly are you supposed to find the information you need in an emergency?
