5 out of 5 stars Excellent Singles Resource.......2001-02-02

Wanting something too bad, can and usually leads to difficulties down the road.

Purnell from his own life experience shows the dangers and subtelties of singleness, loneliness, dating. Guarding one's heart is a Biblical paramont and so too does this book suggest that be in a Christian single's mind when entering or preparing for relationships.

Like how he places all relationships in relationship to the First Commandment relationship.

Divorce would certainly decrease if more attention and effort was placed on the prenuptial stages and this volume is great asset to this.

4 out of 5 stars A must read for every single.......1999-07-20

This book changed the way I see dating and committed relationships in general. I have been making so many mistakes and I now know why I've had my heart broken so many times. The author was single until around 40 so he knows how to navigate the single waters in a healthy way.

He offers practical advice on how identify the real thing. Thanks Mr. Purnell, I feel grateful to you for sharing your experience. You said all the things that mom and dad were afraid to say.

            Book Description

In this study of late nineteenth-century moral reform, Peggy Pascoe examines four specific cases--a home for Chinese prostitutes in San Francisco, California; a home for polygamous Mormon women in Salt Lake City, Utah; a home for unmarried mothers in Denver, Colorado; and a program for American Indians on the Omaha Reservation in Nebraska--to tell the story of the women who established missionary rescue homes for women in the American West. Focusing on two sets of relationships--those between women reformers and their male opponents, and those between women reformers and the various groups of women they sought to shelter--Pascoe traces the gender relations that framed the reformers' search for female moral authority, analyzes the interaction between women reformers and the women who entered the rescue homes, and raises provocative questions about historians' understanding of the dynamics of social feminism, social control, and intercultural relations.

              5 out of 5 stars Shockingly Good!.......2004-06-03

I guess this might be marketed as a kid's book but the content is well written and contains enough facts that it could be bought for readers of all ages. It's like a PG movie, kid friendly and adults secretly want to see it too. This sensational collection of interesting facts, history of ancient beliefs, modern beliefs, and inventions throughout history is laid out in picture book format with brilliant illustrations alongside short paragraphs.

A great book containing interesting facts if your holding a trivia night, want to learn about different religious and scientific beliefs about the earth's creation, want to learn about history, inventors or bizarre inventions that were never successful compared to brilliant ones discovered by mistake. If you want to get kids interested in science or history then this is also an excellent introduction book as well. Great book, buy it!

4 out of 5 stars The Life Of An Underappreciated Woman.......2007-01-21

This book does a fine job presenting the life and times of Emma Hale Smith. She believed her husband, Joseph Smith, was a prophet because he was too ignorant to have come up with the Book Of Mormon on his own. She stayed with him through thick and thin, until his mob-murder in Liberty, Illinois. Their greatest conflict was in her objection of polygamy, which Joseph had considered "The Sacred Principle". Brigham Young, who would later have 41 wives, grew to dislike Emma because of her anti-polygamous position; surprise, surprise. This is a good and valuable book, both for its illustration of day-to-day life back then, and for the picture of Mormon history presented.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! Did this book open my eyes..........2006-11-22

This doesn't get taught every week in Relief Society...! I began this book by thinking she was just a little ? in Mormon history and she has turned out to be in my eyes extremely selfish and worldly almost like a feminist back in the 19th century...
What i found facinating in the book is she (when she took off the blinders about polygamy in 1843) is that she threatened to divorce, cheat on, and actually tried to poison the prophet twice...! Wow...
All i have to finish with is the quote from brigham young about her "She was a wonderful woman, and would be more so if she'd start acting like a saint, then acting like a devil"...

              5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2006-08-22

and well documented. I first read this book years ago, when you could still buy it in Mormon book stores and honest research was not yet suppressed. K. Ramsey ( see his vitriolic review) fails to mention that the author was excommunicated precisely because she dared to print the truth. It is always a sad state of affairs when you see authors and researchers being treated in a manner that one would associate more with a totalitarian government, or perhaps with another faith - during the time of the Inquisition. At any rate, this book is well worth reading because it is without the sugary white-washing which one so often finds nowadays in books of that genre. A good follow-up read would be Compton's well-documented and sobering book "In Sacred Loneliness", which deals with the fate of the plural ( and often polyandrous ) wives of Joseph Smith.

1 out of 5 stars Not really a good book at all.......2006-07-13

Unlike Aslian Quinn, who calls herself an LDS feminist, I dont write ravingly good reviews on bunch of books about Latter Day Saints or LDS teachings, but whose authors are themselves all Excommunicated or Apostatized.
If you are interested in reading about notable and praiseworthy LDS women in history, and all the good they have done in their lives, then You dont search out authors who are all excommunicated and have some kind of hate agenda going but claim to be "Neutral on Religion".
There are literally tons of books through Deseret that are uplifting to read and are truely inspirational. Those kinds of books improve our lives and happiness. We gain a feeling of self-worth through goals and trying to improve our lives. We feel better about ourselves because of what we are striving to become not because we are better off that someone else. Thats just a silly pecking order.

Aslian Quinn seems to love to read and write reviews about hate and hurt and pain and self loathing and vengence etc. Aslian seems to have some kind of guilt for being a female. Get over your silly teenage girl feelings and enjoy femininity and all the benefits it brings to women.

This book and the others that Aslian seems to fawn over, is just another attempt by the author to make money simply by writing about something and making it controversial. This is simple LIT101 class in college combined with ECON101.. Making a buck by writing a book that makes the readers promote your book. It reads like the local trash at the supermarket checkout -- by attemping to get the readers to share in its hurtful gossip and therefore make someone feel above someone else because of their life's difficulties.

4 out of 5 stars Mormon Enigma: Emma Hale Smith.......2005-10-24

the originall book EMMA was better first polgamy was not an issue since Emma was his only wife Brigham young married him to 23 women after he died!! he did love Emma and she later joined the RDLS church which still follows Joseph Smith's original teachings.

                      Book Description

The phenomenal success of Patrick O'Brian's seafaring novels has spawned a great hunger for more reading material on the Royal Navy and the Napoleonic Wars. Dean King has combed through mountains of primary-source material and has selected the most riveting, informative, and entertaining accounts from the great age of sail. His explorations have, in the words of Douglas Day, C. W. Barrett Professor of English at the University of Virginia, "yielded a collection of narratives that are just as exciting as the marvelous Aubrey--Maturin novels of Patrick O'Brian."

Told by actual participants, the eyewitness stories range from slices of life at sea to events of great historical significance, including epic battles such as those of Cape St. Vincent and Trafalgar, and the death of Nelson. Every Man Will Do His Duty is sure to delight legions of seafaring adventure fans.

If all you read in this book is "The Audacious Cruise of the Speedy", you will have gotten your money's worth.

If the only stories you read are the two chapters from the Nagle Journel, "For the Good of My Soul, 1795," and "Mad Dickey's Amusement, 1798-1800", you will have gotten your money's worth.

But you get more than this. You get a total of 22 stories picked from many to capture the history and character of the times.

If you like Patrick O'Brien, and C.S. Forester, you will enjoy the history that gave seed to these stories. You will recognize the events of Lucky Jack Aubrey's fiirst cruise in the cruise of the Speedy, and be amazed.

5 out of 5 stars THE REAL DEAL!.......2000-04-07

Having been in the navy and loving life at sea(though I'm a long way from it now), I always look for books that make me feel like I'm still there. What better book, then, than one written by people who WERE there? This volume collects some of the best first-hand accounts of life at sea in the Royal Navy during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Probably the best of all are admiral Lord Cochrane's telling of his first command, the tiny sloop Speedy, and the experiences of sailors on the gun deck in the heat of battle. Better by far than even the best Hornblower novels(no offense, I love them too). Don't miss this one!

3 out of 5 stars brilliant account of history.......1999-01-10

This book captured me from start to finish. The huge amount of history and knowledge leads to euphoria to the history lover.

                            Book Description

Willis examines the many orientations and perspectives of reporters that gather and present the news of the day. Debunking the notion that there are limited perspectives journalists may use, Willis examines up to 15 different orientations that reporters bring to their work. These perspectives run the gamut, from the traditional approach of distancing oneself completely from events and people involved to becoming part of the story's fabric to ascertain the story's true essence. Willis also suggests that, for many stories, it is wholly appropriate for journalists to feel what a non-professional would experience at such an event, and to allow those emotions to fuel the reporting and writing of the story. Several examples are discussed in detail, including the coverage of the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City on April 19, 1995, and the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

                                  Book Description

The firsthand account of one woman's crusade to reintroduce an endangered species to the wild. Inspired by the plight of the Mexican gray wolf, retiree Bobbie Holaday formed a citizens advocacy group and soon found herself in the center of a firestorm of controversy, with environmentalists taking sides against ranchers and neighbors against neighbors. This book tells her story for the first time, documenting her eleven-year effort to bring the gray wolf back to Arizona's Blue Range.
