Basic yet thorough overview.......2003-04-30
Just after my mother's stroke, and without any knowledge of the symptoms and effects of stroke, I picked up this book. If you know little about stroke but need to educate yourself quickly on the important details, this guide is for you. I read it in less than an hour. It gives a complete overview -- from symptoms & causes to diagnosis & treatment to coping & caregiving -- in just 80 pages. I recommend pairing it with a more comprehensive book, such as After Stroke, but definitely read this one first in order to grasp the overall picture.

Book Description
With more than 1,100 images and a text written by respected author and veteran Colonel H. Avery Chenoweth, this tribute to the U.S. Marines shines with all the pride of the Marines themselves.
Salute the few, the proud, the Marines. From their founding in 1794 to their most recent actions--including the second battle of Falluja--the entire history of the U.S. Marine Corps comes vividly to life in these lushly illustrated pages. Pore through the comprehensive images of nearly every Marine hero, uniform style, sidearm, saber, weapons platform, recruiting poster, plane, helicopter, boat, and mess kit. Many of the photos were shot recently right at the Historical Center at Quantico, Virginia, and they include rare and never-before-seen artifacts from the Marines' long history. Colonel H. Avery Chenoweth provides fascinating background information and context to compliment the visual journey.

Great gift for your favorite Marine.......2007-02-19
My husband enjoyed this book so much. It is well written, the research well done and the photos awesome. He appreciated the chapter on the war in Iraq as well. It made a great gift on Valentines day including a Globe & Anker cake *grin*
The Few, the Proud!.......2006-11-05
There are a number of books on the Corps, but this is one of the best, professionally prepared and well produced books I have seen. With that in mind, it seems odd that the one and very serious error, as was previously mentioned, is the Birthday of the Corps. As the author, researchers, or producers should have known, the Corps of US (or Continental) Marines was born on November 10, 1775 and we (Marines) will celebrate 231 years of proud service to this copuntry in a few days.
The remainder of the book gives a clear, precise and detailed account of the history and equipment of the Corps, without getting bogged down with specific elements of that history. Should a reader wish to look further on a portion of history, as noted, there are many more detailed accounts of specific periods, battles, etc.
However, it presents the story of the Marines with gusto, like the burning of Washington by the British during the War of 1812, when Marine gunners and riflemen from the Barracks and the Navy Yard held the British advance, causing them numerous casualties, allowing the Continental Army to withdraw. One of the few buildings not destroyed by the Brits is the Marine Barracks at 8th and I, and is one of the oldest buildings still standing in the city. A Royal Marine officer refused to burn the building out of respect for the gallant stand taken by the American Marines in their desperate attmpt to defend the city.
The book itself is well produced and handsomely presented, and for the price, a solid bargain, certainly for any Marine, or anyone else interested in the history of the Marine Corps.
This is one outstanding Marine book........2006-10-23
I own several of the more popular table top books about the Corps, the ones with emblems in the center of the cover, but this one is really superior. First that needs mentioning are the outstanding photos of the artifacts, items that you would see in a museum. Also the text tells the story in enough detail to allow the reader to gain a good knowledge and appreciation of this historic institution. The book is well put together and really an attractive edition. Also it tells the Marine Corps story right up to our current war on terrorism. What really made me buy the book was when I saw 3 photos that were taken of Harrier jets of the Bumblebees of VMA-331 aboard the USS Nassau during the 1990-1991 Gulf War. I was a member of VMA-331 during that cruise. In fact I ran into the author, Col Chenoweth, one day in medical triage, as he was headed out to take photos of the air ops. In the book, there are two standard deck shots of the jets on the ship and then there is one of a pilot in his jet preparing for takeoff. That pilot was Captain Manny Rivera USMC of New York who was lost in an aircraft crash soon after that picture was taken.
That's all it took.
No argument, it's a great book........2006-09-30
I bought this book after researching as much as possible. I haven't finished reading it yet, but it seems to be well written and illustated. As for the founding of the Corps, the book does well in refering to the original Continental Marines and the fact that we celebrate November 10, 1775 as the founding date. The permanent founding date of the United States Marine Corps did occur after the original Corps had been disbanded. I've known that for years. The Continental Navy was founded on October 13,1775 and was disbanded, but again they celebrate that date as their birthday. The Continental Army was founded June 14, 1775 and that, too, is the Army's birthday. I don't believe the Army was ever disbanded, but it was reduced quite a bit. The important thing is to read the book and appreciate all that our Corps has done over the years. I highly recommend it. Semper Fi!

Marine! The Life of Chesty Puller
ASIN: 0870217682 |
Book Description
The proud and the few come to life in words and images in this new history of the U. S. Marine Corps. Based on extensive research and filled with more than two hundred illustrations, the book provides a comprehensive warts-and-all study and a celebration of the exploits of a colorfully unique armed service. A retired Marine lieutenant colonel and a well-known scholar--both accomplished authors and former history professors at the U.S. Naval Academy--have teamed up to create this carefully balanced account. The work covers in detail not only the epic battles of the world wars and harrowing struggles in Vietnam and Korea, but the formative years of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
Readers will find thrilling tales of the Continental Marines fighting for American independence and a revealing account of the interactions of the USMC and CSMC during the Civil War as well as the awe-inspiring, bloody struggle for Iwo Jima and the legendary fighting withdrawal in Korea at Chosin. Many of the personalities presented are familiar--among them Chesty Puller, Smedley Butler, and Archibald Henderson--but new names, faces, and deeds emerge as the authors probe deeply into Marine history. A few classic photographs are included, but many illustrations appear for the first time or are reprinted from seldom-seen nineteenth-century sources. While avoiding the sensationalistic, the images often capture the true horrors of war in stark detail. Historians and Leathernecks alike will find much to savor in this lively, fresh telling of a classic tale.

Missing the personality.......2007-06-07
I was lead to this book from reading about USA's Small wars in Max booths book, "the savage wars of peace". I started reading this book, It is in depth and does go into details you might not find in other similar books but the layout and writing make it seem more like a text book and less like an account of amazing heroism. There are many pictures and diagrams to explain how battles took place. But the book does a lot of name dropping...often going into a list of officers that were present at the battle. I also felt that it skips a lot of military engagements altogether or just mentions and moves on with out the in depth explanation you'd expect from a book with such a targeted subject. If your interested in the personalities and some of the less know marine engagements I recommend "the savage wars of peace" not this book.
Good.......2005-02-18
I find that i have to review anything about the marines and give it five stars even if i havent finished it. This book i havent even read, but based on its description I guess it deserves five stars.
A comprehensive yet readable survey of the U.S. Marine Corps.......2002-04-10
U.S. Marine Corps provides a comprehensive yet readable survey of the U.S. Marine Corps, considering how the service evolved, overcame challenges to its existence, and established a separate strength greater than some armies. Black and white photos liberally pepper a title which traces the activities and evolution of the Marines from their origins to modern times.

Book Description
This indispensable reference provides concise, year-to-year summaries of events in the history of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps from the Revolution onward. Nearly encyclopedic in coverage and supported by well over two hundred illustrations and four indexes, it gives readers immediate access to a wealth of material. Compiled and updated by a longtime professor of naval history at the U.S. Naval Academy, the popular chronology is much more than a simple catalog of naval facts. Jack Sweetman explains the consequences of major events and, when appropriate, provides a series of entries to show stages of development and give a sense of continuity.
This new third edition, the first update since 1991, adds information on the decade from the Gulf War through the turn of the century, a period that included nuclear weapons reductions and the end of the Cold War, but also saw a focus on littoral warfare, the growing role of women in uniform, strikes on Iraq, intervention in Somalia, the air war with Yugoslavia, the attack on the USS Cole, and finally the war in Afghanistan. The revised chronology is available in hardcover and is also being offered in a paperback edition for the first time.

A great reference on Marines and their uniforms.......2000-09-12
Cureton's book is a wealth of knowledge packed into a relatively tight format. Although all of the books in this series are very informative, most do not span the time frame that this book does.(It covers roughly 1800-1991) The book has a very good mix of color and black and white photos with accompanying text. It is written in such a way that the beginner could follow easily, but yet still provides the valuable information that the student of military history seeks. Many of the photos are rare shots from the National Archives and the Marine Corps museum in Washington D.C., that the uniform collector, or military modeller will find indespensable. Also included are examples of rarely seen womens uniforms and that of Navajo codetalkers. I highly recommend this book to beginners in the field of military history and uniforms, and it would be a welcome addition to the collections of serious military and Marine Corps buffs alike.

Robust examination of facets of authoritarianism.......2006-03-08
This edited volume collects essays from scholars who seek to avoid the exceptionalism trap that many scholars writing on the Middle East too often fall into by examining the specific power structures and challenges faced by states in the region. Although there are no earth shattering new arguments and many of the essays seem rather self-evident to one who is familiar with the region, it nonetheless provides a rare look into the politics of the Middle East that is often missing from generalized discussions of authoritarianism. As an introduction to the region, furthermore, it is well worth the price.
The book is divided into two parts based on whether the authors attribute the stubbornness of authoritarianism to state- or society-centered explanatory variables, although the approaches can fall into either the "prerequisites" school that posits certain institutional preconditions for democracy (economic, cultural, or societal) or the "transitions" paradigm that views democratic transition as contingent upon certain conditions. Vickie Langohr offers one of the must erudite essays that pokes holes in the conventional wisdom of promoting NGO development and civil society before political parties have sufficiently developed. She argues that NGOs have coopted the traditional role of political parties, which may be detrimental in the long-term for democratization. Eva Bellin's chapter on coercive institutions is one of the best in the book since she offers four explanations for the robustness of the region's security apparatuses- rentierism, Patrimonialism, international support, and the degree of popular mobilization- thus integrating many of the common arguments into one unified explanation. Posusney's chapter on multiparty elections is less fulfilling, however, since her argument about the strategic dilemma posed to opposition forces by authoritarian rulers who often manipulate election results to ensure the emergence of loyal parliaments is somewhat self-evident. Her examination of the electoral systems and techniques of manipulation, however, add specific insight into the politicking behind the politics we read about in the news. Angrist's essay on party systems and regime formation is similarly obvious - that the nature of the political party system at the time of independence was critical for success - and although she holds up Turkey as a successful example of a pluralist democracy, she underestimated exogenous factors and breezes over the role of the military, leaving her essay rather hollow.

Book Description
In an affectionate and hilarious memoir of her forty-three years at National Review, Priscilla Buckley takes her readers behind the scenes at the magazine that came to define American conservatism. With her brother William F. Buckley leading a "brilliant but highly combustible" cast of characters, she recounts the adventures and antics of the intellectuals, writers, and statesmen who built the most formidable movement in contemporary politics.
Miss Buckley's insider's account of daily life at National Review includes anecdotes that will become part of the folklore of conservatism: the scandalous origins of the office's Memorial Couch, Arthur Schlesinger's prize donkey, and NR's own version of the Pentagon Papers, to name a few. Her privileged perch had its advantages and drawbacks: Miss Buckley worked with many of the leading journalists and politicians of the past half-centuryNR attracted the young George Will, Joan Didion, Garry Wills, David Brooks, and Paul Gigot, among others. She also constantly contended with the more exotic species in the conservative zoo (remember the fluoridation controversy?).
Interspersed with these winsome tales are accounts of the Buckley clan's outdoor adventures that rank with the best travel writing: hot air ballooning, white-water rafting, and huntinglots of hunting.
As National Review celebrates its fiftieth birthday, Miss Buckley's memoir of family and work, patriotism and faith, pranks and laughs, will charm American conservatives through the anniversary year and for years to come.

Why does it ever have to end??.......2006-04-26
What will we do when the Buckley clan is gone? First John Wayne, then Ronald Reagan, now the Buckleys, WFB and his sister, Priscilla gradually recede from our consciousness, followed ineluctably in time by Paul Harvey we tearfully conclude. Giants all. This book is to be cherished, as with brother Bill's memoir of last year ("And Miles Gone By"), like a strand of hair from a saint; to be pulled out every now and then and pressed to one's heart in longing remembrance of the grandeur that humankind can produce so resplendently every now and again in individuals(as opposed to collectively). Read the book and weep, but with a smile on one's face mirroring the same that radiantly graced it's author's lo these many years.

Revealing and eminently useful........1998-08-24
This book is a collection of transcribed conversations. Like the works to which it is most likely to be compared, Mary Ann Humphrey's "My Country, My Right to Serve" and Randy Shilts's "Conduct Unbecoming," Zeeland provides ample biographical material. Yet the book's greatest worth is not in the narratives it contains of individual lives. It is the connections, relationships, and social patterns described incidentally by the interviewees that make it a unique and eminently useful contribution to gay and lesbian studies. The dialogues chronicle what has long been known to exist but few before have actually described in depth, the far-ranging and pervasive gay networks within the United States Army and Air Force. One of the back-cover blurbs accurately proclaims that the book challenges stereotypes and assumptions. A considerable body of research in the recent past encourages the belief that danger and misery characterize life for gays in the military. This was not true for the soldier-lovers who told their stories to Zeeland. Most claimed their sexual orientation created little difficulty. Several complained of minor harassment and insisted gays endured more frustations in the military than heterosexuals, but others claimed that life was no more unpleasant for gays than for anyone else in the service. The interviewees rarely expressed the morbid fears or self-doubts that allegedly result from continuous efforts at concealment and public denial. "The purpose of this book," Zeeland explains, "is to promote queer GI visibility." In this he has been successful, and in the process has given readers a revealing glimpse of gay community life in the United States Army and Air Force.
This book blew me away........1998-07-30
This book not only lets you see the lives of REAL gay men in the military, it's also a look at this whole network of young soldiers. It's amazing how different these GIs are from each other, all they really have in common is that they like men. Except some of them are more "bi-curious" I guess. It's a whole different world from the gay scene. And I couldnt believe how blunt and open these guys are! Oh yeah, it's damn sexy reading too.
yawn - it reads more like a soap opera than a serious study.......1998-04-09
i cannot believe how bored i was reading this book. i gained very little insight into what it means to be gay in the military.
the men in the story mostly knew each other, and sometimes displayed this catty attitude toward each other and the interviewee.

The Best American Crime Reporting 2007
ASIN: 0375713018
Release Date: 2003-08-19 |
Book Description
This year’s worth of the most powerful, the most startling, the smartest and most astute, in short, the best crime journalism. Scouring hundreds of publications, Otto Penzler and Thomas H. Cook have created a remarkable compilation containing the best examples of the most current and vibrant of our literary traditions: crime reporting.
Included in this volume are Maximillian Potter’s “The Body Farm” from GQ, a portrait of Murray Marks, who collects dead bodies and strews them around two acres of the University of Tennessee campus to study their decomposition in order to help solve crime; Jay Kirk’s
“My Undertaker, My Pimp,” from Harper’s, in which Mack Moore and his wife, Angel, switch from run-ning crooked funeral parlors to establishing a brothel; Skip Hollandsworth’s “The Day Treva Throneberry Disappeared” from Texas Monthly, about the sudden disappearence of a teenager and the strange place she turned up; Lawrence Wright’s “The Counterterrorist” from The New Yorker, the story of John O’Neill, the FBI agent who tracked Osama bin Laden for a decade—until he was killed when the World Trade Center collapsed. Intriguing, entertaining, and compelling reading,
Best American Crime Writing has established itself as a much-anticipated annual.
Customer Reviews:
A Mixed Bag of True Crime.......2005-05-27
This book is a compilation of a number of true crime articles written during 2002. The influence of 9/11 and terrorism is abundant. But many of the other stories delve into a more "bizarre" area of crime and the criminal mind. While none of the articles blew me away, all were solid and interesting. Anyone looking for true crime from a slightly different angle should look here.
This Collection is Hard to Put Down.......2004-01-24
Simply stated, the "Best American" series is a national treasure. This is only the second volume of the Crime Writing entry, and it is already up there with Best American Mystery Stories and Best American Sports Writing in terms of quality. All of the Best American books feature great use of the written word, regardless of subject matter. In that sense, this book is a home run.
The book starts out with "Big Shot," the tragic tale of former NBA star Jayson Williams, and of the less famous man he unfortunately killed while showing off a gun in his home. "The Counterterroist" is about a wourld renowned FBI counterterrorism expert who retired to become head of security at the World Trasde Center, only to die in the attacks two weeks later. "The Last Ride of Jesse James Hollywood" is a disturbing spectacle of bored modern youth. "The Enron Wars" provide a great insiders view of that scandal. "How Two Lives Met in Death" is a heartbreaking tale of an Israeli and Palestinian teenager, one of whom killed the other in a senseless suicide bombing. And "The Bully of Toulon" describes how a psychotic resident of a small town instituded an atmosphere of fear among his neighbors until it exploded into violence.
These great tales and much more await those who decide to sit down with the 2003 edoition of Best American Crime Writing.
'Blah' is the word you're looking for.......2003-12-27
Eh. A bit disjointed, uneven - not every story is good, no story is great. This being my first foray back into crime writing since renouncing the genre after a bad meeting with an account of the Bernardo murders (I believe they were known as the Ken and Barbie killers in the Yoo Ess of Aye), I swore I wouldn't bother again.
But this collection seemed sedate enough, with credits from such magazines as GQ, Harper's and Vanity Fair. The pieces collected are well-written for the most part, but vary from being only mildly interesting to boringly lurid.
I'm looking forward to my next read.

'Must' read on solar and alternate life style power.......2007-01-18
After many years of planning, we built our solar efficient home from scratch (4.5 kw of PV, & batteries off-grid, and thermal radiant heat loops); er, yes, I'm an engineer. This book is a great introductory, up to fairly advanced level. If at all interested in solar photo-voltaics, this is key. site planning, batteries, outputs, setting up a energy budget, just about all you need to get started.. after sucking up this book, the next level would be the tech data on Outback Energies web sites, by reading their use and design guids.
The Real Deal.......2003-11-13
This product is great for anyone interested in getting involved in keeping their enviroment healthy. The products and information contained within the pages of this book will guide the novice to the right product choice for their needs. This book is the stepping-stone for a sustainable life in harmoney with nature. At the least this liturature will be informative and enlighten the reader to one's place on earth.
One of the major areas addressed in this catalog is waste management. The average family consumes more than fifty gallons of water a day in toilet water, which must be recycled either through chemical or natural treatment before it can be used by humans again. Another problem caused by human consumption in normal life is garbage. This book addresses both of these issues rationally and offers suggestions to limit and eliminate some of the causes of this enourmouse amount of consumption.
Out of everything consumed by the human population, what we consume the most is energy; we need energy in one form or another to power our vehicles, homes, and to produce the products we use. This book focuses on products that use renewable energy sources the sun, wind, and water. It also informs people that some apliences, even when off, are still eating energy in the form of phantom loads, this can account for twenty-five percent of an energy bill. Addressing this issue can mean a significant savings. This book also offers products that cut energy consumption in half when in use.
Another catagory is enviromental quality of the home and office, ofering healthy cleansers, an alternative to the heath threatening harsh volitile organic compounds commonly found. Features of these products are recycled material and more biodegradeable components.
This catalog offers a large range of products, from construction material, to household essentials, to resource guides and how-to books. It is a great help for anyone who wants a healthy life for their family.
A fair introduction to Alternative energy sources.......2002-11-27
Be aware that this product is 25% information and 75% sales catalog. It provides a brief overview of a particular technology and then presents the reader with many pages of products addressing that technology. Whilst this is a useful introduction to (say) wind generators for home use, $... is a lot of money to charge for a catalog. This book/catalog tries to address everything from passive solar to hydro-electric power generation, but doesn't really do a great job on any of it. Not a bad introduction, but certainly not a "must have' kind of book.
Worth every cent in having understanding of alternatives!.......2000-12-31
At least for anyone looking to cheese off the oil and power companies!! I'm not a bleeding heart, but I do kind of have to live on this planet! If I can do so without mucking it up, well, that's probably a good thing. This book made it easy to clean up at least my own act!
This book has paid for itself a dozen times over in the money I have saved in electrical costs! The tech chapters were over my head, but my electrician understood them and (thank God) was willing to try something new! A fine book!!
A necessary book for all interested in effficient living.......2000-05-26
From novices to pros, this book explains Renewable energy and efficient building practices. Great reference to start design and cost estimation from each section. One of the best features of this book is the addition of the National Electric Code for RE systems. It's possible to pick a building material to build a house, design a solar electric system, decide on appliances, determine the use of a greywater system, and more from 562 pages. No more looking up pages on the net!

Real Goods Solar.......2007-10-16
I wish I had checked out the library copy before buying. If you're looking for a broad-based overview of eneregy options -- Solar, thermal, greywater, micro-hydro, landscape lights, bird fountains, etc -- this can be your one-shop-stop. Real Goods has blended energy overviews with their catalog, so if micro-hydro-electric (!?!?) interests you, then by all means look no further, Real Goods will be happy to retail out their product to you. However, I found most of the energy information available out on the 'net --free and more specific and informative, and alternate sources for energy products and options more abundant and lots cheaper.
If you have a serious interest in something specific, example PV systems, I found no single source, but recommend Kemp, "Got Sun? Go Solar" for helpful overview and great links and resources, and "The Renewable Energy Handbook", a better option to Real Goods. All from Amazon, and more applicable for actually getting greener and saving a buck in the process. These leave searching for the best and most applicable products and options to you, and there's much out there to choose from, and some very informative nuggets to be had along the way.
(FWIW: our city recently held a sustainable living fair, attended by Real Goods. But when I followed up on their "Call us when you're ready, happy to help you go green!", I received an abrupt "We don't service your area.". I guess green refers to the energy movement AND to those ready to cash in on it.)
Explore the options!.......2007-10-11
Gave this to a friend getting married; within a week they purchased a solar attic fan. There are many options for solar living, great and small. I recommend this book to check out your options.
Outstanding bible on solar energy.......2007-09-16
I am an engineer and was looking for a book that has an easy to understand yet fact based and accurate book on solar energy implementation.
i was not disappointed. This is one of the best basic reference book on different uses of solar energy that you can find on the marker.
