5 out of 5 stars Excellent ! An honest, insightful examination into love.......2001-04-07

I am a former student of Professor Andrews, both in his chemistry courses and his class on understanding human values. His outstanding personable qualities made learning from him a joy. This book reflects these wonderful attributes in a subject that should be dear to everyone. As one of his teaching assistants for chemistry, I remember discussing triumphs with him and my fellow students (his definition of a triumph was anything you consider to be a triumph). Nearly 20 years later, I still vividly recall this! Professor Andrews first wrote a text titled, "Willing to Love" for his course on problem solving. The book examines love and relationships, integrating it with his personal feelings. Likewise, this book shares such feelings and is a must-read by those wanting to better understand their own self-worth (and more importantly, realize they do have it).

5 out of 5 stars Wow! Transforms your whole attitude toward life!.......2001-01-20

This book is amazing! It has 144 practices that completely transform how you think about your life, other people, loving, and spirituality. It is extremely clear and full of really unique insights. I think both deeply religious people and atheists will be comfortable reading it and will gain from it. Its probing insights will change how you approach all the relationships in your life. I especially liked his inquiry into whether it is more important to be loved or to be loving. I also found his practice of working to love people you don't think you like to be very eye opening!

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful, straight forward coach for growing with life........1998-07-10

Very positive coaching within reality. Not too deep, not rightous, just open and honest. I have to constantly order this book as I give it to so many of my friends and I hope I don't get it back, that it's out there being read by many. I re-read this book every other year or so to keep on track with personal growth and to stay a positive influence in the world.

    5 out of 5 stars Great !!!.......2006-07-09

This book is an revised edition of Walking With God.

From the back of the book we are told "We often hear and read about the Christian Way of Life. For some people this is a vague and intangible expression. In reality, it means precisely a life of common interest with God; a life in which this love of God dominates all our thoughts, words and actions. The Greater the love, the more Christian the life.
Whatever we eat, drink, say, write or do, it should come from our soul living I conscious union and silent conversation with God. It is this union with God that colors our whole life and makes it Christian."

Kilian who has taught theology and philosophy, a voting member of the Second Vatican Council, and a Carmelite priest uses his vast experience to bear on this topic of conversing with God. Much like Brother Lawrence's The Practice of the Presence of God it will help one learn how to experience God in all the details of life.

Then it has a collection of Aspiration prayers that have been used down through the ages.

This book is about going deeper than the Jesus Prayer it is about it is about deep intimacy and communion with God. It is a guide in how to grow in your friendship with God.

At under 130 pages it is a treasure that will lead you to a deeper life with God.

    5 out of 5 stars What a beautiful book!.......2005-10-14

Since Brother Lawrence is my all-time favorite spiritual author, I could not wait to read this book. It is not to simple as Brother Lawrence, but it abounds with suggestions for walking with God (the original title of the book). Fr. Healy reminds us that God never asks more of us than we can give, and that love, not obligation and never fear, is the motor of the Christian life. Walk with God and live!

              -Cosmopolitan

Wallis, the Duchess of Windsor, was one of the most famous women in history, the American divorcée who captured the King of England, Edward VIII, and cost him his throne. Until Charles Higham's 1.3 million-copy bestseller, much of her life was a glamorous mystery. Now, fifteen years later, major new documentary evidence, classified at the time, makes for a book far more sensational than the original bestseller. Drawing from long-suppressed archives in France, England, and the United States, Higham has uncovered the duchess's passionate affair with a top-ranking political figure, the duke's romantic involvement with a male equerry, the secret radio broadcasts the couple made to Hitler, and the blackmail plot in Paris that almost brought them-and the British royal family-to ruin. This updated new edition of The Duchess of Windsor is essential reading.

"Higham's best. . . . Serious, deliciously fresh . . . documented by newly opened secret government files in the U.S. and England."

4 out of 5 stars A Story of Ambition And Greed, .......2006-03-01

How History portrays Edward V111 and Mrs Simpson will probably vary somewhat - but this book from Charles Higham is an excellent starting point for history buffs.
With the passing of time, more and documents are being made available for perusal from a wide range of sources. The Governments of Britain,Germany, Austria and Italy for starters.
Then add Buckingham Palace letters and documents, and the views of FDR and the Whitehouse staff, Winston Churchill,Hitler et al.
The level of research can make or break a biography and this one succeeds because of Higham's thoroughness.
It has always been clear to me that the Duchess had no idea what she was embarking on when she became involved with Prince Edward.
She was vilified, loathed, shut off from the Royal family.
At various times during her life she experienced real despair and
              depression.
Their lives became empty and meaningless - just endless rounds of entertaining and being entertained.
Many of the upper class in England were Nazi sympathisers, and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor were no exception.
It was this allegiance that was the root cause of all their problems, as British and American spys kept abreast of their activities, their friendships and of course the notoriety they received when visiting Germany did not go unnoticed.
It was because of this concern they were in effect banished to
the Bahamas and had their requests to travel abroad refused or at least severely curtailed.
The Duke seemed to forget the promises he made when he abdicated. He was born to be King and the reality of NOT being King was something he never managed to adjust to. He thought that he and Wallis would return to England to live but his support of Germany and plotting with the Germans to again become King should Britain lose the war, was well known to George V1 and to Churchill, and thus a return to his homeland became an impossibility.
The most revealing access to the character of the Duchess of Windsor were in her letters to her Aunt Bessie. On one occasion she was complaining bitterly about the Bahamas, and the house etc, never once mentioning the war and the hard times people were experiencing.
On another occasion a visiting British friend mentioned the London bombings, loss of life etc and the Duchess' response was along the lines of why should she care, the British had made her life hell and she would never forgive them etc.
Interestingly enough, Wallis was regarded as a spy of long standing, and her later annual trips to America were viewed with alarm by the US government and she was constantly under surveillance.
Both the Windsors spoke fluent German and yet despite living in France for many years, they knew only a few words of French.
This book shows Wallis as a woman of expensive tastes, very chic
beautifully groomed, and a fine hostess of great taste and style.
Many who knew them well noted that the Duke was besotted by her
but she less so with him. Then again, when his final illness struck him down, the Duchess of Windsor was there for the Duke until the last.

3 out of 5 stars The little American Lady.......2005-11-14

This book came out about 12 years ago and it was presented in a beautiful hardcover jacket.I read it as a novel and it fascinated me.The writing and the pictures are great. The story on the other hand is about this unpleasant and ugly woman, who stole the heart of a king.Mr. Higham wrote it beautifully, unfortunately she was not a very likeable person.Whether some of the stories are true or not, we shall never know. Like the duke running around in diapers....Read it if you are interested in British History.Sadly Wallis is in it.The Duke on the other hand gave an impression of being somebody without character, extremely weak, and a puppet in Simpson's hands.

3 out of 5 stars An overblown, cliche-ridden biography of an unpleasant woman.......1998-04-28

"The Duchess of Windsor: The Secret Life" purports to shed scandalous light on the life and times of Wallis Warfield Spencer Simpson Windsor. Higham paints the Duchess as a sometime spy, a Nazi-sympathizing party girl, and the dominating figure in the life of her weak, dim husband. At the same time, he touts her vaunted personal charm, fashionable elegance, and supposed genuine affection for the man who surrendered his throne to marry her.

Unfortunately, the author's slapdash writing (replete with repetitive facts and anecdotes and endlessly laced with self-congratulatory details of his mostly unrevealing research) mean that "The Secret Life" doesn't even read well as mindless escapism. Higham's great revelations -- that the Duchess faked some details of her life as a military wife in China, and that the Windsors' contacts with various Fascist sympathizers were more substantial than they themselves were willing to reveal -- are hardly surprising in the context of a life devoted almost entirely to self-gratification and hedonistic consumption.

"The Secret Life" fails to convince the reader of anything except the almost overwhelming mediocrity of its subject, and by extension her hapless consort. Nothing fades faster than news of yesterday's parties; much the same is true of the once glittering and romantic legend of the Duchess of Windsor.

In this demonstration of Alan Stakie's own financial (and supposedly, literary) aspirations, the secrets revealed are almost all business secrets. Starkie helped oversee the princess's financial planning, rescheduling her debt and entertaining an amazing array of quick opportunities to turn her desperation into ready cash. The contemplated deals range from commemorative plates and watercolor paintings sold through QVC to tawdry pulp serializations and a miniseries for the telly--even a Sarah Ferguson name-brand nursing home chain. More sensibly, Fergie and Starkie have zeroed in on book deals and a spokesperson role for Weight Watchers. The blow-by-blow of the balance sheet and the marketing of a royal are splayed out here for your reading pleasure.

4 out of 5 stars A revealing and interesting insight into the world of Fergie.......2003-11-03

Before I read the book I questioned the authors reasons for writing it - especially as she called him her 'dearest friend', but by the end of the book I understood completely. Her loyalty to the author was negligeable and 'hurtful', especially when he told of the circumstances following his suicide attempt; she said next time he commits suicide (as her clairvoyant told her he would) and when he is dead could he get JFK to tell his son that she was destined to marry him (John Kennedy Junior) - bizarre to say the least! At her worst Fergie was shown to be thoughtless, selfish, deceitful, spineless and spoilt. However, the author also gives a balanced view, as in the case where Fergie held and kissed neglected, orphaned kids when many of the other adults present could not even bring themselves to enter the room because of the stench. As for John Bryan - he needs help for sure - what a shallow character!

                4 out of 5 stars Human Weakness.......2003-04-03

I have just read the book for the second time. Very interesting insight into the psychology of all parties involved, including the author. I feel the author had a love/hate relationship with the Duchess of York. When she was good, she was very good: when she was bad she was very bad. It must have been a nightmare trying to "organise" two shambolic personalities. At the same time, I get the feeling it was very attractive to be "an inside player" rather than an outside observer.Well written.

5 out of 5 stars Great insight...by one who obviously knew her best!!!.......1999-04-15

I cannot say enough about this book of ALLAN STARKIE'S....FERGIE: HER SECRET LIFE!!! It's like he was a mind-reader, or psychic when it came to him (Allan Starkie) getting into the thoughts and feelings of SARAH FERGUSON! Truly amazing insight....he is to be commended....and perhaps the QUEEN will KNIGHT him...NOT!!! (Perhaps in his next life?) Good show my man. I can't wait to see his next book....and who's the SUBJECT MATTER???

5 out of 5 stars Oh, You've Gotta Read This One!.......1999-01-12

At first, I thought this was going to be another one of those books written by someone who saw the Duchess of York from a distance and figured that gave them the right to capitalize on the experience. I was very wrong! This author has a captivatingly twisted tale to tell about his daily dealings with Sarah and her toe-sucking "financial advisor" John Bryan. This stuff is so incredibly bizarre, that it couldn't be fictionalized. It is the story of one man--John Bryan--who was so greedy, sleezy, arrogant, self-absorbed, and insecure--and the married woman he shamelessly pursued, she having her own set of faults, weaknesses and standards, such as indecisiveness, stupidity, selfishness and extreme insecurity--to name only a few. Their relationship was so destructive and emotionally and physically abusive, that they almost destroyed each other, but not until they had basically destroyed themselves, first. The author stuck with both of them as a best friend until he was driven to unsuccessful suicide and prison, before he finally came to his senses. After reading this book, one would think twice about having the Duchess of York on one's list of friends.

3 out of 5 stars It leaves the reader wondering about Fergie's character.......1999-01-02

If all said is true I'll never know but I do wonder about Fergie's conduct toward other human beings and why some of those often mistreated by her -the author in particular- kept returning for more and larger dosis of tantrums. Perhaps they were seeking recognition by everyone as friends of Fergie.

                              Book Description

Like an American heiress in a tale by Henry James, Iris Origo (1902-1988) was born into a world of "unfair advantages of education, money, environment, and opportunity." She used her birthright wisely, traveling the world, studying art with Berenson, and, with her Italian husband, improving the land and the lot of the peasants in the Val d'Orcia of Tuscany. She tells her life story in Images & Shadows.

4 out of 5 stars It's true; the rich do live differently from the rest of us.......2000-08-03

This well-written memoir is an opportunity to get a first-hand peek at a whole different culture, society and way of thinking. The author is not pretenuous at all in the almost matter-of-fact style that she uses to describe a privileged life where money was always available to provide the necessities and the luxuries. Here we see a glimpse of the reaction of the privileged class to the horrors of war when it made its way to the door steps of their salons.

The best part of the book though was the insight into the author's opinions about the philosophy of writing. Here the modern middle-class American is allowed into the thoughts and opinions of one who was raised with all the advantages of tutors, exposure to the best art in the world, and variety of influential and interesting characters who sailed through her life.

The book would have been much better had the author allowed her emotions to shine through when writing about the deaths of her loved ones. This is the only flaw in the book and this failure leaves the reader with a longing to have had more opportunity to learn the complexities of this intelligent lady.

Anyone who enjoys reading about the aristocracy will enjoy this small, spare book.

                              5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Book.......2000-06-08

This a charming and moving account of what on the surface appears to have been a very privileged life; however the author tells her story (which at times is very sad) without 'showing off' at all.

For those who have enjoyed this book, I recommend Kinta Beevor's A Tuscan Childhood and, also, although it is about an English childhood, James Lees-Milne's Another Self. Both manage to evoke the magic of childhood in the early 20th century in settings that are closer to, say the 17th century, than to today's world.

5 out of 5 stars From the Introduction.......1998-12-20

I turn to this memoir whenever I need perspective on what matters in life. Origo, despite her privilege and access to many of the great figures of the 20th century, never lost sight of what mattered: the people that she loved. This is how she introduces her memoir: "It has sometimes been pointed out to me that I have had a very varied and interesting life, have lived in some extremely beautiful places and have met some remarkable people. I suppose it is true, but now that I have reached `the end game', I do not find myself dwelling upon these pieces on the board. The figures that still stand out there now are the people to whom, in different ways and in different degrees, I have been bound by affection. Not only are they the people whom I most vividly remember, but I realise that it is only through them that I have learned anything about life at all. The brilliant talk that I heard at I Tatti in my youth, in Bloomsbury in the thirties, in New York and Rome in later years, has lost some of its glitter. All that is left to me of my past life that has not faded into mist has passed through the filter, not of my mind, but of my affections. What has not warmed by them is now for me as if it had never been."

Richard Lionheart (Richard I) , has been traditionally viewed as warrior king, and a model of kingly and knightly virtues. Most people don't find the dull records of administration to make for scintillating reading, but for those who already know a lot about Richard I and want a new perspective, this is an excellent study. It places Richard in a European-wide context in a way few studies have done before. However, it does not address (because it is not intended to address) some of the more fascinating aspects of Richard's career: The crusade, his personal life, etc.

First-rate analysis of the dynamics of power in the shaping of an American city. The analysis benefits from the specificity of having choosen a single city: New Haven, CT. But the results of the analysis would be enlightening to the process of understanding the function of power in any community. The scholarship is of the highest quality; the discussion is insightful and thought-provoking. A great resource for those aspiring to shape/influence direction of community growth.
