    Book Description

In Nothing but Blood and Slaughter, Volume Two, the British had conquered Georgia and South Carolina, and had turned their attentions towards North Carolina. By 1781 the British government thought that the war in America was all but over and they could now focus on France and Spain. Though the war had turned against the Patriots, they were not finished. The British had all but won the war in the colonies, but they had not won the peace.

Many of Lord Charles Cornwallis' army had been taken prisoner at King's Mountain in 1780. Cornwallis knew that if he marched into North Carolina the supply lines to his army would be spread thin and Patriot guerillas would be able to strike at will. There was a possibility that he could be cut off from any support and destroyed. However Cornwallis also knew that to destroy the enemy he had to carry the war to them. He could not do this in South Carolina. Against orders from his commander in New York City Cornwallis decided to carry the war into North Carolina.

In Nothing but Blood and Slaughter, Volume Three, the war continues its bloody course. The Revolutionary War was decided in the forests and plowed fields of the South. Huge lumbering armies brought the war into the low country and the piedmont while roving bands of guerillas harassed each other. Americans fought Americans in a bloody civil war. Past grievances against neighbors were paid with blood and fire by the partisans of both sides.

Volume Three is the third volume in a series of four that attempts to list every single military action, no matter how small, in the Carolinas and the Savannah River region of Georgia.

5 out of 5 stars Yet another first class book by O'Kelley.......2007-02-24

Patrick O'Kelley seems to have covered every Revolutionary War Battle and Skirmish for 1781 for N.C. & S.C. in this book. He has done the same for 1771-1779, 1780 & 1782 in his other books. These are a must have for the Revolutionary War enthusiast or researcher. Most of the South Carolina Battles are in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing but Blood and Slaughter - Vol III.......2005-06-19

As with his first two volumes, O'Kelley continues with chronological briefings of all skirmishes and battles in the Carolinas and Georgia, this volume covering the year 1781. Nearly all of the reports include the order of battle and commanders for both sides, with the outcome where known reported in terms of causualities (killed, wounded, captured and missing) as well as overall victor and significance of the fight.

The value of O'Kelley's book are the narrative reports of skirmishes and small encounters as well as the major battles of Cowpens and Guilford Courthouse. The narratives are concise, but usually with enough detail to get more than a flavor of the actions and personality of the leaders, particularly in the bloody clashes between Whig and Tory partisan bands, many of which gave no quarter as some clashes were more for revenge than for political or military gain. "Nothing but Blood and Slaughter" demonstrates that nowhere in the colonies was the fighting so extensive, so personal, so destructive as in the Carolinas.

All of the "Nothing but Blood and Slaughter" volumes are essential for any student of the American Revolutionary war and/or for students unconventional warfare.

O'Kelley is a retired Special Forces Master combat veteran and an avid participant in Revolutionary War recreations, and with those experiences provides an insight most historians miss. His research is extensive, with much of the incidents he reports about being ignored in the history books. He does an excellent job of separating myth from fact. For example, many believe the Revolutionary War ended with the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown. Not so. O'Kelley is now working on a fourth volume, reporting on incidents of warefare in 1782 and beyond.

The only negatives are more of a nuisance rather than flaws in reporting. Volume III is riddled with typos and, as in Volumes I and II, he uses endnotes rather than footnotes, requiring the reader to constantly be thumbing back and fourth. However the end notes are extensive, often more enlightening, adding to the authenticity of O'Kelley's exceptional work.

      5 out of 5 stars Layman's review.......2003-09-03

This book does exactly what the title indicates. It consists of
scientists criticizing Velikovsky on scientific terms. It is significant that they don't criticize so much on historical terms, which is the approach Velikovsky used. The longest chapter is by Carl Sagan, and he did include historical criticisms. This book was originally intended to include all speeches from a 1974 session of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. That would have included both Velikovsky himself and one sympathizer. But, not due to the editor, both of those chapters never made it into the book. Instead, another critic was added, and Isaac Asimov was invited to write a foreword, and Goldsmith himself wrote an introduction. So the title fits the final form.
At the 1974 AAAS meeting Velikovsky was 77 years old and it was 24 years after the publication of "Worlds in Colision," which was the topic of the meeting.

      Rejoinder and Rebuttal
      .......2002-12-07

I'm pleased to see this is in print. This special issue of KRONOS continues the demolition -- begun in an earlier special issue "Velikovsky and Establishment Science" -- of the Cornell work (the title of which should be obvious). This volume deals for the most part with the planet Venus. Only Alban Wall's contribution and the "Vox Populi" section is not actually part of the rebuttal.

These two issues of KRONOS were prepared in response to the published critiques, abuse, etcetera which were heaped on Velikovsky in what amounted to a public show trial -- conducted under the auspices of the AAAS -- familiar to those who have studied the Stalinist era.

For those who don't know and can't be bothered to find out -- Velikovsky has nothing to do with UFOs, Sasquatch, or extraterrestrial intelligence. Various parties continue to use such ad hominem attacks against the polymath Velikovsky, who died over twenty years ago. Beware of such folk -- they're the kind who want to squash debate, eliminate dissent, and crush opposition, all the while professing to be protecting you.

      4 out of 5 stars velikovsky.......2002-11-28

If you actually take time to read Velikovsky (who is very easy to understand) you will see that 'Earth in Upheaval' has nothing to do with myth, religion, or fables. Velikovsky supports his ideas and theories with evidence strictly from geology and the earth. Glaciers, rivers, mountains, icebergs, and fossils are all tools used to support Velikovsky.

The reason he caused such a stir is because he first supported his theories in 'Worlds in Collision' by use of fable, myth, history, and legends that have been passed down. Both books lead to the same conclusions, and the evidence he presents is mounting on both sides of coin (fable, myth, legend, history vs geology. )

Most people who disregard Velikovsky have usually done so without even reading his works. If you have no room for interpretation of myth, legend, scripture, or history; in order to understand his theories you must read 'Earth in Upheaval'. There isn't a peep of myth in it, so those of you who have no tolerance for anything that isn't concrete, you still should be able to get the message through EiU.

1 out of 5 stars Space Alien Abductions And The Like.......2002-01-27

Readers who are fascinated with such subjects as Big Foot, Loch Ness Monsters, Noah's Ark, and Space Alien Abductions will likely be able to read this book. Anyone seriously interested in either science or history would do well to eschew Velikovsky unless they possess a robust sense of humor.

            Book Description

            J. M. Barrie, novelist, playwright, and author of Peter Pan or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up, led a life almost as magical and interesting as his famous creation. Childless in his marriage, Barrie grew close to the five young boys of the Llewelyn Davies family, ultimately becoming their guardian and devoted surrogate father when they were orphaned. Andrew Birkin draws extensively on a vast range of material by and about Barrie, including notebooks, memoirs, and hours of recorded interviews with the Llewelyn Davies family and their circle, to describe Barrie's life and the wonderful world he created for the boys. Originally published in 1979, this enchanting and richly illustrated account is reissued with a new preface to mark the release of Neverland, the film of Barrie's life, and the upcoming centenary of Peter Pan.

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Lovely and sad, the story behind "Peter Pan and the Lost boys".......2007-07-27

Having found this little book before the advent of the film "Finding Neverland" I was able to read it originally without comparing it to the film, always a good thing. The film, of course, changed much of the true story as films usually do. This book standing alone as far better, but note, it is not a happy story with a happy ending, it is a tragedy, and no one is left unscathed.
The photographs, almost all, were taken by Barrie himself, and are absolutely wonderful. He had a natural artistic sense, and his unposed photos of the five Llewelyn Davies boys, Michael, George, Peter, Jack, and Nico at their play, stay with you. They are dressed in the Edwardian clothes of the time, or in costumes they wore in the elaborate make-believe games they played with their childlike grownup friend Mr Barrie, and those are truly memorable in themselves. Often they are playing with J.M. Barrie's large dog, and one can't help but think of the big dog, Nanna, in Peter Pan, it's acutally quite eerie, seeing that the play "Peter Pan" itself wouldn't be written yet for years.
J.M. Barrie came from a lower class Scottish family, and in childhood lost an older brother to illness. His mother took to her bed griefstricken, for a long period, and once, trying to cheer her, young Barrie put on the older brother's clothes and went to see his mother. For just a moment she thought it was the older brother, and he seemed to see happiness in her eyes; for all his life, the message stayed with him, the boy who would never grow up was the loved boy.
He was a strange, brilliant, gentle, childlike man. Highly regarded in his own time, considered a great playwright, equivilent to George Barnard Shaw in his day; and very prosperous due to his books and plays, married, but childless, and probably not very happy in his marriage which would end in divorce, one day in Kensington Park he saw one of the five young Llewelyn Davies brothers. They struck up a friendship, based on Barrie being quite willing to talk to a child on the child's level. Soon after, he met the rest of the family, who were impressed to meet the famous playwright. Their family was also upper class, well to do, but would soon lose their father to cancer, they would thenceforth be in precarious financial straits. Barrie immediately became a combination father/ big brother to the boys. He also became close friends with their mother Sylvia Llewelyn Davies, but not, I suspect, to the degree the movie implies. It was all about the boys, their innocence, and something he wished to capture and hold on to. His obsessive photography of them makes that clear.
Tragedy struck again, unbelievably, when their mother died of cancer as well, at a young age, after a relatively brief illness. By then Barrie was such a part of their lives that his continued influence, and the benefit of his money in seeing to it that all five boys finished school in the manner befitting their "class", was accepted by the boys' extended family. He stayed involved in all their lives indefinitely, though it is interesting that he had his favorites, and the two who were not favorites resented and disliked him as they grew older.
The book stops with the boys' growing up, though he did stay involved with them as a surrogate parent. Tragedy did hound the family, but unlike some reviewers I am not sure that it can be blamed on JM Barrie's role in their lives. In fact, without him, financially they would have far worse off.
It is true the boy named Peter resented that the play was named "Peter Pan", and of course he was teased at school, and Barrie probably should have thought of that. (Of course without Barrie he most likely wouldn't have been at Eton to be teased.)
Two footnotes: all the proceeds of the play went to the Children's Hospital in London for 100 years, until recently with the 100 years anniversary, the copyright ran out, and now it is in the public domain. No proceeds of his biggest success ever went to Barrie.
Also, the girl's name: "Wendy", was first used in the play. It was an unknown name before that. Barrie used it in memory of a young daughter of a friend who was named Wendy, and who died at age 5. (Not known where that family got the name from, or if it was a nickname.) It was not a name known previously and "Peter Pan" popularized it.
Its an excellent book, an opening via the photographs into another long-gone time, a sad story, but not I believe, due to Barrie. I believe he meant well, and tried his best to be a friend to that unfortunate family. He had his demons as do we all, but to "love" children, in that era, to befriend them, and even play with them when they were pre-teens, could still occur without any implication of perversity; and even to sleep with a child, the concern of one reviewer, was, at the end of the Victorian world, seen as a pure and innocent act, like a parent and child might sleep together...I think it is hard for us in our cynical age to see things as the late Victorians/Edwardians did. No whisper of scandal or of anything improper ever came from any of the five boys, their family, servants, or anyone else connected with them; and I think had there been it certainly would have come to light. I believe he truly loved the boys, and they in turn, after he knew them several years, and had observed their play and their natural talk and style, influenced him to write his masterpiece "Peter Pan".

4 out of 5 stars J.M.Barries and the Lost Boys: the real story behind Peter Pan.......2007-03-08

This is one of the bases for the movie "Wonderland" but reading this book will creep you out on J.M.Barrie. You might never really like Peter Pan again. Author had access to his papers, letter, diaries etc. Very weird stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Sheds a new light on Peter Pan.......2006-11-03

I found this book to be a well-researched and moving account of not only Barrie's life but also the lives and deaths of the original "Lost Boys". After reading this book, I read Peter Pan again in a whole new light and enjoyed it even more. I think reading this book is essential in order to fully appreciate the entire Peter Pan experience as it truly helps to bring the characters alive.

5 out of 5 stars Tragic loss of dear illusions . . ........2006-09-12

I read this book over 15 years ago in an attempt to find out who the author of Peter Pan really was, and what his life was like. It was not a pleasant or easy read. I wanted to forget all about it and just have the enchantment of "Peter Pan," but as with the real life of the author and photographer of "Alice in Wonderland," the truth can wound deeply. But lies and half-truths can never reveal the relationship between biography and art, so one must often face much disturbing information in order to understand the art itself. This is not to say that art is reducible to biography; it is not. There is, nevertheless, a kind of dialectic (God, I do hate to sound so gawdawful jargony, but when it so plain, other words just do not work) between the life of a genius and the art of the same individual. The truth of art can only come from the struggle between an artist's vision and the life that made such a vision a necessity. Yes, a necessity: there are those artists whose lives were so fraught with sheer catastrophe that revelation through a skewed fantasy can be so powerful as to take on a "life" of its own. And this is why it is so grievous to "paint-over" the unpleasant details of such a life. There was a recent film with an appropriately disturbing title: in the attempt to not really "find" Neverland in Barrie's life, the art itself is drained of its truly tragic roots. At the time such "nice" little fantasies are presented, they seem so harmless, but they are not. Successful attempts to eradicate truth can also eradicate the depth of the art itself. "Neverland" is a word that begs a little attention: a land where children "never grow up." This is not to say that they physically die - no - instead they live their lives, as did Barrie, in a desolate, lifeless, and desperately lonely "land" and try, from within their internal isolation, to bring others along for the rides to nowhere and "never." Where else could such a person bring another? If one lives in "Neverland" of the mind, there is nowhere else to lead another - nowhere else to go. And if we do not face unpleasant truths as they are revealed in the crucible where life and art meet, we learn nothing further from the art. It is better, actually, to know nothing of an artist's life than to be fed untruths. I would suggest the readers either read this book and/or see Peter Pan, but would urge them *not* to see Peter Pan after experiencing a false represenation - no matter how "well-performed" the falsehood is presented. The play or story would be meaningless. The truths, whatever you choose to make of them are here in this book, like it or not. And once the genie is out of the bottle (such as when you have been fed a disingenuous Hollywood film or other disingenuous account), to refrain from the truths of an artist's life is a violation of the art. No one can any longer understand or be truly moved by Peter Pan, much less try to interpret it based upon a sugar-coated Hollywood paint-job. And the effect goes on: if other artists were inspired by Barrie's work (perhaps because it touched the nerves of their own catastrophic lives), and all we have is a candy-coated film, their art and whatever in their lives might have inpired their interest in Barrie's work is also distorted. I do not know if truth sets anyone "free," but I do know that untruths distort and harm. And then the distortion goes on . . . This book cuts deep, but struggles for truths, which is what a biography of an artistic genius should try very hard to do.

5 out of 5 stars Tragic and Beautiful .......2006-02-01

Prompted by the movie "Finding Neverland" I wanted to learn more about the Davies family and their relationship with Barrie. My research lead me to this book. The tragic story of the boys and Barrie was an eye opening read. Birkin is an artful weaver of ancedotes, interviews and history. While I was reading the book I got lost.I started feeling like I was an intimate friend of the families, instead of curious observer. Furthermore, Birkin's website has been updated with more pictures and media files. The website coupled with the book really saturates you into the life of the 5 boys and the mindof the man who loved them very much. A beautiful account of a flawed and tragic life.

              608 pages 8 x 10
              * Comprehensive examination of all German infantry units * A monumental study of the organization of the German Wehrmacht

The infantryman was the backbone of the German Wehrmacht in World War II and the difference between success and failure was often decided by the common foot soldier. In this authoritative study, George Nafziger examines unit structures from divisional to company level. Based on extensive research into primary Allied and Axis documents and sources, this valuable reference work is a comprehensive directory to a key element of the Wehrmacht and of the German military machine.

The German Order of Battle: Infantry in World War II identifies each infantry unit operating between 1939 and 1945, and details the organization and precise composition of the formation.

George F. Nafziger is a foremost historian specializing in military organization with special emphasis on World War II and the Napoleonic period. His books include The German Order of Battle: Panzers and Artillery in World War II (1-85367-359-5).

              5 out of 5 stars A Massive Undertaking.......2004-10-15

Mr. Nafziger has once again gone where few dare. He has compiled a tome well worth the effort.

As in his other books on various military units Mr. Nafziger has created understanding and clarity in a very difficult area. Especially during the end of WW II. Making sense with sparse information and keeping a clear delination of units and their histories.

4 out of 5 stars A good reference for German infantry organization.......2000-05-04

Another massive compilation of information about the German army of World War II by Mr. Nafziger.

This book is an excellent resource for determining the organization and equipment of German infantry units during the war.

Mr. Nafziger documents the order in which the various divisions were created and equipment in their possession during various points of the war.

There are a couple of items which detract from the worth of the book as a reference.

Information on deployment of the units and their relationships to German higher commands is scarce, and makes order of battle analysis impossible without resort to other works on the German army.

The book addresses only German army infantry divisions; the infantry divisions fielded by the German air force and navy are not mentioned, nor are the air force parachute divisions. There is no mention of S.S. units in the book, as Mr. Nafizer apparently intends to publish a separate work on the S.S.

There is a detailed table of organization of a Volksgrenadier division in the book, but the explanatory notes on the numbers of weapons for most of the sub-units appear to have been omitted.

There are occasional minor errors, such as the explanation that "zbV" means "zur besonder Verband" [the last word should be 'Verwendung'], meaning a unit "for special employment".

Mr. Nafziger has done an admirable job tracking the chaotic German order of battle in 1945 and providing detailed notes on the nonstandard composition of these units.

There are only a few references to German fortress infantry units; one can only hope that in the future Mr. Nafziger will publish a volume dedicated to all German fortress units to clarify that aspect of the German order of battle.

A useful reference, if incomplete in some regards.

                Book Description

Tanks and infantry working together made the German blitzkrieg as successful as it was. This book focuses closely on the infantry component of that powerful alliance, showing German infantry warfare as it evolved as such a powerful force beginning in 1939, only to fail and face defeat in 1945. German Infantry in World War II examines the organization and strength of the German infantry forces that took part in each major German campaign launched during the war, from the first thrust into Poland through the Bulge to the last stand, the Battle for Berlin. In particular, veteran military historian Chris Bishop describes the great sieges: Stalingrad, Leningrad, Sebastopol, Budapest, and Berlin. He details the infantry forces used during each campaign, giving strengths and orders of battle for the formations involved, along with maps of the action and an assessment of the role of the infantry forces in each offensive.
Illustrated with photographs of the infantry forces in action, as well as detailed campaign maps, this book is an essential resource for anyone with an interest in the history of World War II in Europe.

                    Book Description

This book describes through case studies how various factors, such as the single-party political system, traditional culture, market reform, and industrialization, shape public opinion and mass political behavior in urban China. Case studies focus on the process of conducting public opinion polls in China’s political environment, regime legitimacy and reform support, media control and censorship, interpersonal trust and democratization, mass political participation, labor relations and trade unions, and the role of intellectuals in political change.

The book draws most of its empirical evidence from twelve Chinese public opinion surveys conducted between the late 1980s and the late 1990s. The same questions repeated in many of these surveys provide a rare opportunity to examine the changing pattern of the Chinese public mind during this period. The book ends with the provocative conclusion that China’s authoritarian political system proved to be less effective than traditional culture, marketization, and industrialization in shaping public opinion and mass political behavior. Liberal ideas and bottom-up political participation can emerge even in the absence of direct elections.
