      Book Description

Gettysburg was unarguably the greatest battle of the Civil War. Now, in a unique,close-up look at this pivotal moment in American history, awardwinning historian Rod Gragg follows the lives of a regiment of farmboys from North Carolina through three days of gore and glory in the fight that would help decide the fate of the nation. Told here fully for the first time is a remarkable and intensely moving story of the courage and sacrifice that typified Americans on both sides of our bloodiest conflict.

5 out of 5 stars A heart felt "Thank You".......2005-06-20

goes to Mr Gragg for his excellent book on the 26th NC Regiment. As a long time Union County resident in the "Old North State", I have often times looked at the Confederate Memorial located on the old courthouse lawn in Monroe listing all the various units which volunteered to do battle from this area. Units such as Co B, 15th NC Reg/ Co F, 35th NC Reg/ Co D, 37th NC Reg/ Co B, 43rd NC Reg/ Co A,E,F and I, 48th NC Reg/ Co I, 53rd NC Reg/ Co C, 10th Bat, NC Artillery/ Co F, 2nd Reg, NC Artillery (Jr Reserves) and of course ... Co B, 26th NC Regiment.

Who were these men, what were they like, what battles did they participate in, how many made it home and what were their lives like when they returned. Political Correctness has taken it's toll in the South, demonizing all those who participated in the Confederacy as extremists and traitors to the United States and so ... from the very towns and villages and hamlets where these men came from, little is known or even spoken of concerning these men today. Indeed, more roadside historical markers of the exploits of Gen Sherman exist today in this area than tributes to the men who defended their homeland.

It is true that the cause may have been all wrong ... men fighting for their own liberty and independence while denying the same to an entire race of people is hard to justify. I do suppose that "States Rights" must fit somewhere in the total picture of the war, but I am convinced that slavery was still the main cause of the war ... so in the end, I guess that we are only left with the devotion to duty, the courage and valor with which they performed that duty and the truly horrendous losses they sustained in trying to achieve their ends. But I do not judge men who lived so long ago by the standards of today and slavery was truly a world wide phenomona not so very long ago ... yes, the South held on to it a little longer than other sections of our country ... and it has paid a price for it ever since.

But Mr Gragg has put a face on those men of so long ago for me, one which I can put in my heart ... that of Col Lane ... who spoke at the 40th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. If Mr Gragg would permit me I would love to quote from his book.

"When Lane spoke, the croud hushed. Looking down into the faces of his audience, he saw many who had witnessed the excitment, tragedy and horror of those unforgetable fields of fire. There too were many who could never imagine what he described; they were a new generation for whom those three days were merely history. "I was once a soldier ...", he began, and then spoke at length ... an old man telling a young man's story of smoke and fire and death. He tried to tell them about the shouts and volleys, about brave enemies in Black hats, about dressed lines and fallen color-bearers. He tried to tell them about the courage and confusion, about McCreery and Wilcox and Honeycutt ... and about Colonel Burgwyn, down and dying. He tried to tell them what it was like to look into the face of a twenty-one-year-old when the boyish light in his eyes was fading. He spoke of exhillerating victory and searing losses. "On the third day," he told them, "the remnant with colors flying stepped out, with hearts of oak, to take part in that memorable third day's charge." He gave them brutal numbers and awful statistics of bloody subtraction: 800 young and healthy men with homes and families and futures reduced to so few and then reduced again to nearly nothing.

Always, he came back to his men."Your valor is coming to be regarded as the common heritage of the American nation," he told them. "It no longer belongs to your State alone; it no longer belongs to the South; it is the high-water mark of what Americans have done and can do." He wept. In front of everyone and without apology, the old warrior looked at the tiny, aged remnant of the 26th North Carolina and he wept. "I give you the highest tribute," he told them, " ... a comrade's tears." A blue uniformed band of Pennsylvania veterans then broke into a spirited rendition of "Dixie," and the audience ... Northerners, Southerners, Americans all ... erupted in cheers.

Thank you Mr Gragg for pouring so much of yourself into this book, for in so doing you have given something priceless back to those of us who claim the Southern heritage. I can now look at that memorial in the courthouse lawn and feel a sense of pride for in the end ... the question is not what a man can scorn or disparage or find fault with, but what he can love and value and appreciate.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2004-06-08

The narrow focus of what the 26th is most famous for is wonderful because it allows for many details. For those that don't know, they took atrocious casulaties over a 48 hour period, basically 8 out of 10 men went down. Their action is legendary, lining up against the Union's most famous, Iron Brigade, and also being the unit that could claim the farthest penetration into enemy territory on day 3.

As always, a couple of more maps would have been extremely helpful, but that being said, the ones there are well done.

Day 1 is treated extremely well with intense description of the action, almost minute by minute as far the 26th was concerned. The reading is smooth however, and most won't get lost in the details.

Day 3 has some of the best coverage that I have read because the author expands the focus for the Picket-Pettigrew-Trimble Charge to cover many of the other units involved. Of course, the 26th still gets the lions share of the commentary.

This book isn't for novices, but at the same time, you don't need to be a hardcore student to get it. I think a simple 2 or 3 page synopses of the battle will help so you don't get bogged down with some of the names, but more so you understand the importance of the battle in an overall perspective.

Again, the focus is the 26th at Gettysburg with a very brief prelude and wrap up to their other action. Highly recommended for the ACW afficionada and casual reader.

My only little quibble is with the quality of paper and tiny font for the paperback. Come on publishers, put the better works on better paper so they'll last longer.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic and Moving.......2003-07-13

This book has brought even closer than before to the realization that men of the South, especically the 26th North Carolina, sacrificed so much for what they believed in. This book follows this unit from beginning to end, sharing all that they did during the War, but hilighting Gettysburg and the tremendous toll it took on this great unit. I was especially enthralled by the personal side that the author shared, delving into personal history of various members of the unit, especially its Boy Colonel. A great read for those who want to know more about the men and units who made up Lee's great Army.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, concise well-written regimental history.......2002-07-30

I'm pretty new to reading about the Civil War, but so far it seems that Regimental History books are my favorite. While other books try to do too much and cover many battles, generals and focus on troop movements, etc., Regimental History books focus on people and individuals.

Covered with Glory was particularly enlightening, as it sheds some light how Confederates felt about the war.

It is a very focused and straight forward read. Don't expect this to be a comprehensive book on the Civil War, but to experience a "little piece" of it, this is a great book.

5 out of 5 stars COVERED WITH GLORY.......2001-12-11

An outstanding read! The author does not spend a great amount of time dealing with the formation and early days of the regiment. Instead and pleasantly so, he provides the reader with just enough information to get a feel for the regiment and its officers and concentrates on Gettysburg.

Additionally, the book is in simple and plain english allowing the reader to easily navigate troop movements, etc.. I especially enjoyed the "what happened to" part of the book, something which is missing from too many volumes.

Overall an excellent book about one of the ANV's best regiments -BUY IT!!!!!!

                Book Description

As heirs of the Enlightenment, we in the West tend to view ourselves as humane, rational and reasonable. Genocides are atrocities that "others" commit, so revealing their backwardness and essential "otherness".

Colin Tatz's study of genocide exposes this Enlightenment-based self-image as dangerous complacency—especially in its examination of colonial genocides (what "we", in Australia for example, got up to not so long ago) and the Holocaust (what some of "us" did within the lifetimes of many of us).

A South African-Australian-Jew, Tatz provides a personal yet analytical and critical account of racism and anti-Semitism, and the termini to which such policies and practices have led in Germany, Turkey, South Africa and Australia. In so doing, he reveals how widespread is the (genocidal) propensity to resort to biological solutions to resolve social or political "problems". In addition, he raises general questions on the matter of denial—asking why, rather than what, denialists deny—and concludes with his reflections on many years of teaching about genocide.

                    4 out of 5 stars Manson's True Words? .......2007-07-16

I won't pretend I know all about the "Manson Family" and I haven't even read Helter Skelter (i've seen the film, though) and I don't really read many true crime novels, but this was one I couldn't pass up. I don't know why some are going on about how Charlie didn't write this book, it is plain as day that there is another author, so Charlie more or less dictated the book. Right? Now, how well Emmons adhered to those words I don't know. But I liked this book. It was a fast read for me, compelling, sometimes frighteningly rational, and I understand the motives behind the Manson Family better. No, Charlie didn't commit those murders himself, but he was a ring leader, although I think at that point if he'd told them not to commit the murders they probably would've done them anyway - that being hyped up on drugs thing. I must say that I walked away knowing more than I ever wanted about Manson's previous sex life. I did like the honest feeling that I got from Manson (what there was of it) and he owned up to some things. He didn't try to paint himself as a victim, he did take some responsibility. Does that make all he did excusable? No.
What disappointed me about the book was the lack of information of the trials. Like I said, I haven't read the prosecution's book (maybe i should), but I really would've liked more of Manson's view on his trial, the Family's trial, etc. What was with the swastika on his head and the "I am Christ" claims? I realize some of it may've been media propaganda, but I would've liked more of his view.
Is this book entirely the truth? Probably not, nothing ever is. But it's a good read, in my opinion. He's just an average guy who made some horrible choices, probably has brain damage from all the drugs, and definitely has childhood trauma. It's easy to see how he ended up where he did.

                    5 out of 5 stars excellent find.......2007-06-09

very interesting book. was one of those you do not want to put down. it gave a different perspective of the happenings of the manson family. however, one must keep in mind it was recorded from what charles manson believed happened. great book.

4 out of 5 stars BETTER THAN THE HELTER SKELTER LIES.......2006-11-03

ok, ok,- so these arent actually charlies exact words, but it is a decent overview of how everything came to be. After reading this you should gain a better perspective of this man. It does cover tons of information about his life and the 'family' members. The world believes the 'helter skelter' race war garbage that manson was supposedly trying to start, when it was just a bunch of 'tripping talk' among the whole group. The media pushed this along with the prosecutor and its a bunch of garbage. He didnt FORCE anyone to commit murders and didnt murder any of those people himself either. I obviously disagree with what they did, but I am at least openminded enough to see through and understand others perspectives no matter what they may be or how disturbing. lm tired of people blaming it all on Manson- Dont judge someone based on what the media portrays, or people who are seeking immunity for testimonys against him. The reason he captivated so many people was not because he was some evil guru who hypnotized people into his control- he was a generally peaceful man who rarely used violence unless he was using it in defense. He is a deep thinker who loves animals and nature, and those kids looked up to him by their own choice, not because he made them.
Get the facts before you go deciding on a person you know nothing about except reputation....and even in his interviews, he only acts like a madman cause he knows thats the picture thats been painted of him and thats what society wants to see, it's what we expect. HE is a victim of peoples ignorance, He got blamed for everything and committing those murders wasnt even HIS idea, and HE didnt even act them out! He may be guilty of not trying to prevent the crimes, but he isnt the monster the media makes him out to be. Read this book and l GUARANTEE you will see things more clearly. I also recommend 'my life with charles manson' by paul watkins.

                    4 out of 5 stars new information.......2006-09-25

This book was written by an ex con and former friend/cellmate of Manson's. It was written based on Manson's account of the events of his life. The two talked behind bars and then the author would write Manson's words down to the best of his ability. Manson did not write anything and a tape recorder was not permitted in prison so the ideas were Manson's but the wording was the authors. That said the author does his best to use Manson's wording whenever possible and tries to not veer off from Manson's account of his life story.

This book pieces together many loose ends in the Manson story. We learn of his troubled childhood and see the formation of antisocial personality disorder at a young age. Manson also finally admits that he did organize the murders of 9 people and actually expected more to be killed. The motive is still fuzzy. It was in part "Helter Skelter", copy cat killing and robbery but mostly it was hatred. Hatred for his mother. Hatred for society and everyone in it that once neglected and mistreated a little boy from Ohio named Charles Miles Manson.

2 out of 5 stars I don't believe Manson had anything to do with this........2006-09-12

Ok, if your a Manson collector of course you have to have this, but otherwise it is not even a good read, let alone Manson's words.
Buy it if you are collecting, but read Helter Skelter or the Family for a better read.

                                  Book Description

The story of Venice is, to some extent, separate from that of the rest of Europe. The same could be said of the city's military history and organisation. Early in the 9th century the Venetians defeated Pepin the Frank's attempts to overawe them, and they remained, at least in theory, subject to Byzantium. Gradually, however, Venice drifted into independence; and subsequently carved out its own empire at the expense of its former Byzantine masters. The Venetians were soon famous for their roving and warlike spirit, keen business acumen and pride. This book explores the remarkable history of the city and its army from 1200 up until 1670.

Why the Men-At-Arms series continues to put out these overly broad volumes is beyond my fathoming. Yes, the information is good ... up to a point. The problem is that in creating such broad portraits, the best you get is a stereotyping of the era. And as this volume is not graced by Angus McBride's illustrations, it falls to a lower notch yet.

Venice was a power in the Middle Ages and through part of the Renaissance. Even when dominated by foriegn powers, it was a player on the international scene, especially when dealing with the crumbling remains of the Byzantine Empire. This book does show that Venice was a force to be reckoned with; unfortunately it is covering a period of over 450 years, so anything said in the book must of needs be of a broad perspective.

Many people buy the Men-at-Arms book strictly for the center colour illustrations (yes, I've seen you, you fighters of the SCA!). There is nothing at all wrong with this. I might warn a potential purchaser, however, that the illustrations in this volume are rather flat and might not give you the wealth of detail you might otherwise expect. They are not /bad/, but sometimes the proportions are a bit off, which might convince you to lenghthen a hauberk where it is unnecessary.

I can only hope that Osprey will someday go back and break up several of these "long era" books into smaller chunks. We would be far better served then.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best books on Republican China.......1999-10-23

I first came across this book when I was a graduate student in the China programme at London's School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS). It is certainly one of the best works on early 20th century China.

5 out of 5 stars Excellence in print, a modern classic.......1999-06-24

I can't believe that the reader from Charlottesville gave this book only one star. It is clear that he must be grossly mistaken in his opinions. Perhaps he never read the book, for anyone who has had the pleasure would surely rank this book on the same level as other historical classics of its kind. I urge all readers to disregard the Charlottesville review. It is clear that he either holds a grudge against the author, or is merely some slack-jawed yokel. Give Rickshaw Beijing the chance it so richly deserves, and you will be amazed at what you find: a well crafted history, sparkling with significant insight, peppered with a brilliant writing style.

1 out of 5 stars Forget Sleeping pills, read a chapter of this drivel........1999-06-19

Strand spends too much time on the Rickshaw, and not enough on the Beijing. Although his grasp of the subject matter is unmatched, his delivery is not as masterful and, at times, sleep inducing. I don't know what that means, but it's bad, I think.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, a masterpiece on the growth of Beijing.......1999-06-17

David Strand takes a large scale topic, namely the rise of Beijing in the early part of the century, and magnificently weaves a compelling tale. He covers all facets of city life, and in doing so, paints a vivid, and historically significant portrayal of life in 1920s Beijing. The book is definitely an important study and should be read by all who have any interest in China.

Super book. I worked for and with the author. After reading a lot of Game Warden books, this is the best. I did this for a living and it is a must read for any outdoorsman, woman or, cop, game warden or anyone that wants to laugh one second and have the hair to stand up on your neck the next.

As an outdoorsman and retired Ranger, I have read several books about Gamewardens. I wholeheartedly recommend this book. Sgt. Hethcox portrays the humor and hardships a Ranger experiences while performing his/her duties. It was easy to identify some of the characters even with the name changes. Is Sgt. BIGGERS who I think he is? It also brought back my memories of similar cases that I came in contact with during my career with Georgia Game and Fish. Having worked my first and last days with him, Honor describes the author and MOST that wear the Green and Grey. Thanks Jim, for taking the time to put it on paper.
