I have a copy of this book as well, and I decided to check on the comments of the last reviewer. I didn't find any mention of waiting 1-3 minutes before calling 911 in cases of CPR. In fact, the book makes a point of not putting off calling 911, especially if you haven't practiced CPR before. The book provides natural remedies interspersed in the text. They are noted with an icon next to the paragraph so the reader will know that these are alternatives to regular medicine. I am not an advocate of natural medicine, so I really didn't pay much attention to those paragraphs. I do suggest that anyone really serious in first aid should take a class (from Red Cross, for example). That is the only way you can safely practice CPR before really performing it.

1 out of 5 stars First Aid and Safety For Dummies.......2000-02-20

I have been a big fan of the "For Dummies" series and own many copies of their books. However, my most recent purchase, First Aid and Safety for Dummies, has been extremely disappointing. The purpose of reading this book was to find a book that my first aid and CPR students could reference for more details than the standard class covered. However, I found the book to have incorrect information, and information that contradicts the nationally accepted standards. The authors are medical journalist with no documented emergency medical experience. The only section of the book that had reasonable information was the "Special Situations" section. The first aid, and preparation section has recommendations that could be harmfull, even deadly if followed. For example, the book mentions numerous times that first aid and CPR should be performed for 1-2 minutes before EMS(911) is activated, the national standard is; as soon as an adult person is found unresponsive to activate 911. The reason is that most adults go unconscious or into cardiac arrest is due to an irregular heart rhythm, this rhythm can only be reversed with defibrillation by a portable defibrillator (like in the show ER). This is why most communities have police, fire, and ambulances carrying these units, airlines also now carry them. A delay of a "few" minutes can mean the difference between life and death. The book also makes a recommendation for during an asthma attack to use the herbal supplement ephedra (it mixes alternative medicine in with traditional medicine, during the first aid section;versus having a seperate chapter addressing alternative medicine). Ephedra has been known to cause deaths in healthy young people (it is used as an energy boost, simular to caffeine)someone may misinterpret this and use it alongside with a prescibed asthma inhaler, this could be deadly. These are just a sampling of the mistakes (personally, the two most scariest in my opinion). I have written IDG books and hope to get a response. My recommendation is if you want a book on First Aid or CPR stick with a nationally recognized organization (i.e. American Red Cross, American Heart Association, National Safety Council)many of these publications are available online. And most importantly, take a class, the books are invaluable, but so isn't the hands on experience you will recieve. I am writing this as a First Aid and CPR Instructor with 12 years of emergency medicine experience. Once again, other than this particular book, I have enjoyed and found the "For Dummies" series very informative.

    Book Description

Best known as the hero of Little Round Top at Gettysburg and the commanding officer of the troops who accepted the Confederates' surrender at Appomattox, Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain (1828-1914) has become one of the most famous and most studied figures of Civil War history. After the war, he went on to serve as governor of Maine and president of Bowdoin College. The first collection of his postwar letters, this book offers important insights for understanding Chamberlain's later years and his place in chronicling the war.

The letters included here reveal Chamberlain's perspective on military events at Gettysburg, Five Forks, and Appomattox, and on the planning of ceremonies to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of Gettysburg. As Jeremiah Goulka points out in his introduction, the letters also shed light on Chamberlain's views on politics, race relations, and education, and they expose some of the personal difficulties he faced late in life. On a broader scale, Chamberlain's correspondence contributes to a better understanding of the influence of Civil War veterans on American life and the impact of the war on veterans themselves. It also says much about state and national politics (including the politics of pensions), family roles and relationships, and ideas of masculinity in Victorian America.

5 out of 5 stars A Grand Collection of Eloquence.......2004-09-28

While some in the Civil War community complain of "Chamberlain fatigue," it is difficult to gripe about this marvelous new collection of postwar correspondence from one of the most articulate officers on either side of the conflict.

Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain survived the Civil War - including a horrible wound at Petersburg - to become one of Maine's most prominent citizens. His postwar career included four terms as governor of Maine, a stint as president of Bowdoin College, numerous business enterprises, and perhaps most importantly, many years as a writer and lecturer on his Civil War experiences.

The correspondence included by editor Jeremiah Goulka covers nearly every aspect of Chamberlain's personal and professional life. Chamberlain's heartfelt letters to his family, especially those to his wife Fannie, reveal him to be a loving, thoughtful husband and father. His relationship with Fannie, stormy and difficult though it was for many years, survived numerous crises until Fannie's death in 1905.

Chamberlain's Civil War experiences transformed him, and his separation from the army often left him feeling restless. In 1870, Chamberlain wrote to the King of Prussia and offered his services in Prussia's war with France. In 1898, Chamberlain contacted the Secretary of War to volunteer for the Spanish-American War. Even with all his postwar positions and projects, Chamberlain never quite filled the space in his soul left empty by the end of the Civil War.

Critics of Chamberlain, in his lifetime and in our own time, claim that he inflated his role at Little Round Top in an attempt to horde the glory of that important engagement. At least one letter included in this volume refutes this criticism. In a January 1910 letter to Union veteran and author Oliver W. Norton, Chamberlain says of his brigade commander, Strong Vincent, "He was a noble man, and I have not known an abler commander in his grade. Nothing could exceed his skill and energy in taking the position on Little Round Top and the confidence he inspired in his subordinates. To this the result of the fight on the left at Round Top is very largely due [emphasis added]."

The correspondence also clarifies an often incorrectly reported fact concerning the July 1913 fiftieth anniversary reunion at Gettysburg. Chamberlain, while he visited Gettysburg in May as a member of the planning commission, did not attend the July reunion. Chamberlain's doctor strongly urged him not to go due to his declining health, and he stayed behind in Maine.

Rather than being castigated for his prolific eloquence, Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain deserves the timeless thanks of everyone who studies the Civil War. Jeremiah Goulka deserves thanks as well, for his skillful editing, and for giving us a deeper understanding of a genuine American hero.

This is kind of a joyful, thoughtful, updated FAREWELL TO MANZANAR, a modern journey around the Pacific Basin to see the context of our oneness as a people, the future of how we will coexist as Americans and Asians and Amerasians. Examines in a playful way the similarities we share as peoples, and the lessons we learn from each other about our cultures--our histories, and our shared humanity. Important lessons for the future as the boundaries fall away. Highly recommended

      Book Description

While the Christian church has experienced extraordinary growth over the last century, Western culture has continued its seemingly inexorable drift into post-Christian forms. The contrast between our burgeoning churches and the scant impact that Christians have on public policy, the university, or the professions is distressing. And nowhere is this development more evident—and more consequential—than in the field of bioethics, where the dignity of human beings is constantly open to redefinition, and where much of our inheritance is coming under withering fire from those whose values are radically distinct from the Judeo-Christian tradition. This new volume takes seriously the Christian mandate to engage modern culture, giving specific attention to the urgent need for moral leadership as we encounter the difficult challenges posed by biotechnology. These insightful chapters by twenty leading activists, academics, and professionals discuss the contributions that a Christian perspective can and should make to the biomedical debate in today's most important forums—public policy and law, education, media, health care, and the church itself.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Responding to the new medicine.......2002-10-16

Bio-ethics is a new and burgeoning field, effecting all of us. Issues like human cloning, genetic engineering, assisted reproductive technologies, genetically modified foods, and embryo research are just some of the contentious areas which are making an impact on so many of us. Therefore it is important that those with religious convictions bring their concerns to bear on the new and weighty issues being debated.

Too often such debates have been left to the scientists, medical professionals, politicians and even the corporations to sort through. And often these folk bring to bear a secular utilitarian worldview on such issues. But these important matters should not be left for our politicians and scientists to decide upon. People with a religious worldview very much need to raise their voices as well.

As Nigel Cameron states in his helpful introduction:

"It is in bioethics, that point of intersection of the professions, the academy, and public policy, in which the dignity of the human being is constantly open to re-definition, and in which most of the best in our inheritance - medicine, science, the professional idea - is coming under withering fire from those whose values are radically distinct from the Judeo-Christian tradition. Our failure at the start of the new millennium to engage the culture in a degree which mirrors the size of our churches is distressing. Our failure in this realm of bioethics is particularly discouraging, since it is here that the assumptions of post-Christians are shaping their idea of what it is to be one of us. Conversely, our opportunity to make a difference at this point is immense."

That is why this volume is so important. It offers a much-needed corrective to the various dehumanising and market-driven approaches to the many debates in the life sciences. It offers a fresh restatement of the biblical position which promotes the dignity and worth of every member of the human race.

In this book a number of experts look at many different bio-ethics issues, but all from the Judeo-Christian point of view. All up, twenty medical, ethical, theological and scientific experts examine the many vexing moral issues which new developments in science and technology have produced.

These authorities deal with such topics as: fetal tissue research, in vitro fertilization, stem cell research, health care issues, abortion, euthanasia, sex education, and many other issues. The emphasis is on applying a biblical worldview to these ethical and public policy debates.

The book does not just deal with specific ethics issues. It also provides chapters on Christian leadership in public policy, developing a Christian worldview, mobilising churches to engage in the issues, and dealing with the media.

Some of the leading thinkers and writers in the field come together in this one volume: John Kilner, C. Ben Mitchell, Nigel Cameron, Francis Beckwith and Terry Schlossberg, among others. Their meaty chapters feature incisive comment on the perplexing ethical issues of our day, along with practical advice on how we all can make a contribution to the debate.

Thus this volume offers a fine collection of articles which are both timely and informative. The need has never been greater for a Biblical worldview to challenge the secularists and utilitarians who have tended to dominate these debates. This volume is a welcome corrective to that imbalance.

      Book Description

In the romantic city of their youth, two lovers face the most heartwrenching decision of their lives--can they leave their families and begin a new life once more?

Betty Schimmel's memoir has already sparked the enthusiasm of publishers around the world and is destined to receive similarly great acclaim from the broad audience of readers who will no doubt be captured by her powerful story. This true story of love and devotion begins in Budapest during World War II. Two wartime lovers vow that, if ever separated, they will find each other no matter what happens, and no matter the cost. Thirty years later--having survived life in a concentration camp, and now married to another man--Betty Schimmel returns to Budapest to confront her past and rediscovers the lost love that has shadowed her life for decades.

4 out of 5 stars Nix the puppy love angle..........2007-04-11

An avid reader of historical fiction and non-fiction, especially pertaining to the Holocaust, I found Betty Schimmel's story to be a strong, engaging read. The story of her survival in a concentration camp as a teenager is nothing short of miraculous, as well as the way she rebuilt her life in the years following the war's end.

However, the one thing I *didn't* care for was Schimmel's romance with Richie Kovacs -- the key plot description on the back cover and the situation referenced by the title. Essentially, Richie is young Betty's first love. The two meet when she is only twelve, and their relationship intensifies by the time she is 14. When wartime relocation of Jews caused the couple to become separated, Richie is the only thing that keeps the traumatized Betty going. If only they could find one another, she believes, they'll have their storybook wedding and live happily ever after.

Soon after the war's end, Betty meets Otto Schimmel, another young Holocaust survivor who begs her to marry him. She agrees -- largely because her family adores him, and she believes Richie is dead.

As the years pass, Schimmel remains emotionally withdrawn from the marriage. Her husband slaves away, working endless hours trying to earn enough money to give her and the children a good life, but Schimmel seems to act like she's doing him some kind of favor by sticking around. Otto Schimmel is not Richie Kovacs and never could be, so obviously he's not worth any love or affection.

Eventually, Schimmel does realize that her relationship with Richie is in the past, and that she has a good man in Otto. But overall, her "reminiscing" about Richie tends to take on the feel of sappy teenager, not really looking at reality. Perhaps Richie Kovacs was indeed Betty's "one true love"; or, more realistically, she simply idealized him, because he symbolized the happy life that was so horribly snatched away from her.

Regardless, Schimmel's memoir *is* written in a strong, clear voice, and is truly a story readers are bound to remember for years to come. It would just be much better without focusing upon the Richie angle so much.

I have never ever read a book that touched my life like this one, I read this over 12 months ago now and it still has a place in my heart, I wanted the end to be different but I could understand why she did what she did, loved it that much, I am going to visit the area, to anyone thinking about reading this, don't think no more, it is the best book you'll ever read.

I have read most of this book and it is amazing! Before i read or even heard about this story i met otto and Betty. Their stories are truly amazing and i believe it is wonderful that they are sharing with the future.

4 out of 5 stars Saw the Schimmels at my school.......2004-12-22

I am a high-school student in Arizona. We had to read this book for school, and the Schimmels came to our class to talk about their experiences as Holocaust survivors.
I didn't really care that much about the Richie love story once I met them in person. Mr. & Mrs. Schimmel are people devoted to each other and, no matter how it happened, found an incredible love story of their own. I hope someday to have a relationship like theirs is now.
Their survival really made a difference to the world, since they are here to tell their story. There are a lot of people my age that think the Holocaust never happened. I know it did because I met people who lived through it and spend all their time telling students about the war. It was really touching, and a lot of us were crying hearing about all the terrible things that happened to them and we were all thinking about how we might have been in the same situation.
I guess the best part of the book is what people will do to survive, but the really cool thing is that Betty took the time to write it and tell everyone about her story.

      Book Description

Dan Evans arrived in Vietnam on October 7, 1968, a 21- year-old Army medic who couldnÂ't stand the sight of blood. Thrust into the cauldron of combat, he soon became a seasoned veteran of emergency medicine and the brutal realties of war. Before his time was up, he would master the skills of a surgeon, acquire the patience of a saint, and demonstrate the courage of a lion.....

Here, in his own words, is the gripping true story of Dan Evans, the highly decorated soldier whom the men of First Platoon, Bravo Company, called the “fighting medic.” Whether skimming the treetops in a MEDEVAC chopper or slogging through the mangrove swamps with an M-16 in one hand and an aid kit in the other, Evans went too work when things went bad. His mission: treat the wounded amid the mud, blood and bullets, or die trying. Experience the rage, the sorrow and the remarkable spirit of Dan Evans - the PLATOON MEDIC who became a true American hero.

Great reading... great story... As with all of us who started at "Ft. Sam", everyone has a unique story... From my vantage point in the 2d bde, I have neverending comraderie with all those, as "Doc Evans", who came before and after to do their job as circumstances required. This is the real thing. (Couldn't edit the rating...meant it to be 5 Stars!!)

5 out of 5 stars Doc Evans still bandages the wounds of his brothers.......2004-04-12

Have you ever just known something you can't explain knowing? I have. I knew this book was going to be special before I even opened it. It has a vibe that I don't expect you to believe, but it does. Maybe it is because I share a sort of kinship with Mr. Evans. He was a corpsman who served in the Vietnam War. I was a medic myself for several years and though I have never felt a bullet whiz over my head or feared for my life, I have known the shame of not saving the life I had tried so hard to save. I have stood at a sink and kept scrubbing at the blood on my hands that had long since been scrubbed away and I can remember the screams of a father begging me to not let his child die. I have seen some things in my dreams that I do not need to share, but suffice to say Mr. Evans might understand. Sometimes only someone who has seen what you have seen can understand. I guess that is how I knew this book was for me.
This is a very good book. As it turns out, it was way better than "just" a good book. To say that implies that it is merely flat and plain and words on paper, as if it is something to pick up or put down at your leisure. In fact, it is none of those things. Mr. Evans' recollections have a life of their own; they pull you in to his thoughts and feelings, take you back to a place where you can feel the mud, imagine the leeches and sense the suffering. The young soldier's story is so real you will feel it brush across your face like a cobweb in the darkest corner of the attic. You will be leery to look into the attic for all the forgotten memories, lost souls and pain packed away in boxes. You would prefer to walk away or pretend you don't care. But that won't work. It is time to unpack. And you do care, or you would not be at this website, or looking at this book. It isn't going to be John Grisham or Danielle Steele. It is about a war that still divides opinion in this country and touched the lives of generations before and after those who served in it. Even though you may know the history of the war in Vietnam, you will find yourself wanting a second chance to do the right thing and to stand up to honor those who served our country - not just for Mr. Evans and the men he served with, but for America itself.

The author weaves his story the way a spider weaves its web: first one thread and then another, somehow tying each end together, forming a piece of art that is different than any other web. His web is strangely beautiful and a little scary at the same time. He is diligent, drawing each corner of his web to a proper angle, adhering it firmly to the doorway we must cross through to learn more. We are lucky indeed to find a man so willing to bare to the world what is so deeply, personally his. Imagine being a girl-chasing, car-loving, movie-going young man one moment and a hunted soldier the next? One moment being squeamish at the sight of blood and the next trying to treat a sucking chest wound. How can you explain to someone why something horribly and ghastly is hysterically funny? Do you tell them the truth - That laughing is the only way you can cope with such devastation and loss? How do you tell people that killing a man might be easy, when one moment it seems as if it is and the next it isn't? Can ordinary people understand how it comes to be that you don't recall what you had for dinner three days ago but you have instant and total recall of one single moment in your life in the jungle of Vietnam in 1968? Can they understand how the man you call your brother is no blood relation at all?

I think Mr. Evans answers every question when he puts words to his story and little pieces of his life on every page. He is a teacher, whether he knows it or not. I believe that anyone who reads this book will feel as if Mr. Evans has given them some tiny little bit of something they never had before. It could be they will learn that the Corpsman is probably the bravest, most selfless creation ever touched by the hand of God, just like a firefighter, because no matter what, when everyone else is running away from danger, they are running or crawling toward it. Or maybe the reader will find out that the Vietnam War was neither won nor lost. That it is not really over for most of the men and women who served there. Or maybe they will change their minds about something they used to believe was true. After all, that is what a teacher is supposed to do: open hearts and minds.

I believe Mr. Evans wanted to reach out to his veteran brothers to tell them he is still here, that he understands what they have gone through, because he went through it too. Maybe he is telling them they are not alone and there can be strength in knowing there are others to support them through a kinship and brotherhood. It seems to me Doc Evans is doing what he has always been destined to do: bandaging the wounds of his brothers.

Doc Evans not only tells it like it was, he makes his fellow grunts, like L. J. Henderson, and their heroism come alive in your mind. After reading Dr. Evans' book you won't want of miss two other books about the 4/39th during this same period; ...

I am a military physician and was serving in Afghanistan when I read Platoon Medic. I read the whole thing, cover-to-cover in a day and a half. It's simply a great book. It is a well-written, action-packed, gut-wrenching rocket ride through the hellish world of the combat medic in Vietnam. I felt like I was there in the rice paddies, watching Doc Evans patch up his bloody, dying comrades while the bullets were flying over his head. Dan Evans tells an astonishingly honest, important and poignant personal story. This book should be required reading for all Army medics and physicians. A great and important read.

5 out of 5 stars It was like reliving the past.......2002-10-08

As a Squad Leader of 2nd Squad, 1st Platoon, reading Dan's book years after experiencing it brough back a floor of memories. We lost some good men in our battles, but we'ed lost a hell of a lot more if it hadn't been for him and the other medic's. I was honored to proof read his story before it was published and when I did, it was hard to hold back the tear's from the memories it brough. I'am honored to know him and to be part of his story.

I am a student at the university where Mr Griffith works as a senior lecture. He is a good lecturer and his teaching style is so cool. He is a good writer, as well. He has many publications of his works related to the international politics. It proves that he is active in writing. So, I recommned you to buy his books.

          5 out of 5 stars Essential Reference!.......2001-04-07

This is a very good introduction to the field of international relations. As an undergraduate student unfamiliar with the scope of the subject, I highly recommend this book as a guide to the range of debates in contemporary international relations. In addition to the usual 'isms' in the field, Martin Griffiths provides excellent summaries of key thinkers in historical sociology and nationalism. The book is comprehensively cross-referenced, with a handy guide to further reading on each key thinker that he writes about. Highly recommended!

          5 out of 5 stars A Timely Reference Work.......2000-12-31

Griffiths' volume provides a welcome introduction to the field of international relations precisely because its focus is on the individual and collective contributions of the men and women who are responsible for its development throughout the 20th century. In order to understand the ways in which various "analytical perspectives" or schools of thought relate, it is particularly helpful to have cross-references at the end of each thinker's profile, i.e., Aron- Hoffmann, Morgenthau, Waltz. The organization of the volume is particularly strong because Griffiths wisely avoids trying to categorize thinkers strictly in established categories. Instead the reader is free to explore the ways in which each thinker has been influenced by his predecessors or contemporaries across the realist-liberalist spectrum or to ponder the differences that may well distinguish institutionalism from the liberal perspective in an era dominated by intra-state conflict. The Theory of International Society and International Organisation sections are particularly instructive to me in thinking and teaching about "cosmopolitan values" and the challenges to regional integration. As an educator engaged in "Internet pedagogy" on several continents, this volume is useful to assign as complementary reading to familiarize students from very different national educational backgrounds about the English-language literature that establishes the fundamentals of thought in the field.

5 out of 5 stars The Prophetic Words of Aldo Leopold.......2004-08-21

Readers of outdoor ethics and conservation philosophy have likely seen collections of Aldo Leopold's essays elsewhere, but I doubt you will find a more diverse and wide-ranging collection than this. Browse the brief chronologic summary of his life and then skip the lengthy introduction (for now), and you will get to the meat of this book. It starts with an essay written by Aldo Leopold as a high school student. From there, the path of essays winds its way like a river through his life, with many stops along the way. The reader can see how Mr. Leopold's outlook matured and changed over time; from such things as a letter to a newspaper editor, to my favorite: an introductory lecture from the first college course he taught. What I would give to go back in time and be a student in that classroom!

Aldo Leopold may be gone, but his body of work remains. His written work has proven to be prophetic. We still face many of the same conservation problems that we faced in the early 1900s; some of these problems have worsened. As a society, we have to realize that we cannot go on repeating our past mistakes. There are solutions to these problems. And the words of Aldo Leopold hold some of the answers.

5 out of 5 stars Clear thinking, eloquent writing.......1999-10-26

"Sand County Almanac" presents Leopold's thoughts and impressions concerning nature and conservation. This book shows Leopold in a far wider context. Leopold held many jobs and had many hobbies in his full life: forest ranger, administrator, hunter, game manager, laboratory director, wilderness traveler, professor. Every time he encountered a new situation he thought about it deeply and creatively, and recorded his thoughts in vivid, non-technical essays, many of which are collected in this book.

I was particulaly impressed by Leopold's thoughtfullness -- that he reached his conclusions not by following the majority nor by catering to the powerful nor by jerking his knee, but by deep and clear thinking. Reading these essays renders vivid the fact that current public discourse is dominated by power play and snide insults rather than by civil, reasoned debate.
