4 out of 5 stars Good Practical Advice for Improving Your Voice.......2005-06-01

As a non-professional (in terms of not being a singer, although I do frequently use my voice in my job), I believe Boone has written an excellent title full of practical advice for improving your voice. I concur with the earlier reviewer that the book is decidedly targeted towards the layperson. Considering that the author's audience is probably mainly nonprofessionals who only want to improve their voice, this is a sound approach.

Among the helpful areas convered in the book include:

1. Problems with too loud or too soft a voice.
2. Suggestions for improving your voice's loudness.
3. Stressful situations and physical stressors that can affect your voice.
4. 6 ways to control stage fright.
5. Common problems of the male and female voice.
6. Voice tips for men and women.
7. 10 suggestions for keeping your natural voice.

If you are a nonprofessional who is interested in improving your voice, then I highly recommend this title as a practical and helpful tool. Read and enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars A good book for novices in the field of voice.......2000-05-21

Daniel Boone , a renowned name in the field of speech pathology, has written a readable self help book for any person who is keen on improving his/her voice. 'Voice Care & Vocal Enhancement' is a complex and specialised subject .But, Daniel Boone has written it in a simple, easy to understand format which would appeal even to a novice. The tests devised to gauge the various parameters of the voice viz. breath control, loudness level, optimum pitch, tone focus are easy to follow. The exercises for improving various aspects of the voice can be easily understood and performed by the reader. However, the book is aimed mainly at the layperson and is not for you if you are a singer or performing artiste who has a fair knowledge of the voice.

Best known for his 1976 book, The Face of Battle, which argued that conventional battle accounts oversimplified the dynamics of troop movements while attributing too much control to leaders, John Keegan has become a prolific author. Fields of Battle includes fascinating observations about how Americans do things differently, both on and off the battlefield, than the English and French. With detailed accounts from long-forgotten conflicts, such as the French and Indian War, and moving portraits of important figures in American military history, including the Wright brothers, who naively hoped their airplane would end warfare, Keegan, an Englishman, explains the past and reaffirms the present to an America struggling to find its national strength.

    Book Description

At once a grand tour of the battlefields of North America and an unabashedly personal tribute to the military prowess of an essentially unwarlike people, Fields of Battle spans more than two centuries and the expanse of a continent to show how the immense spaces of North America shaped the wars that were fought on its soil. of photos.

4 out of 5 stars A Memoir of Cherished North American Travels.......2007-05-04

The reviews seem pretty evenly divided between those who enjoyed Keegan's personal narrative style in this work and those who abhor it; put me in the former catagory with the caveat that the reader should know what he's picking up. First off, Keegan's reputation as a military historian is second to none; he is responsible for humanizing military history. This book, however, is more memoir than history. It is not a new interpretation so much as it is the author's recollections of his travels throughout the battlefields of North America and his personal impressions of the continent. I disagree with the opinion that his stylistic departure diminishes the content of Keegan's work here. It adds a dimension of color, personality to straightforward battlefield history. Telling this story (or more accurately retelling it) could easily have been stodgy in the hands of a lesser writer. Keegan has never been hidebound, hence his great success. I believe the Publisher's Weekly critique to be too cynical, "banalities" seems excessively harsh.

To be fair, this book is replete with personal observations and many generalizations. Here are a few examples: "George Custer was not a nice man" and "Peace is bad for bravados like Custer." From the perspective of an outsider looking in, he states,"The Americans are truly free and equal people," and "the British can feel quite at home in Canada." These simplifications may be detrimental to the quality of the work, but as another observed, it is more difficult to analyze your history when you are immersed in it. It may be more revealing for a foreigner to expound on it, to uncover new interpretation. If nothing else, he is honest. He proudly proclaims his love for America- no phony objectivity here.

This is not a great book, but I enjoyed its reminiscential style. Keegan has a gift for engaging the non-historian in the dramatic struggles through military history. His final synthesis about America and its way of war is particularly insightful.

4 out of 5 stars America from an America-phile.......2006-10-06

Few Americans could have written such a work. It is our great fortune as Americans to have Mr. Keegan to tell the story with such style and readability. It is a fascinating story of the wars that shaped the North American continent and the United States in particular. It also opens our eyes to how historical trends we might not have noticed oterhwise - such as the importance of fortifications in US expansion across the continent. Despite our belief and espousal of maneuver or mobile warfare, fortification has been a halmark of US military doctrine. Mr. Keegan brings out this paradox and helps us see our history in a different light. Mr. Keegan does not disappoint in this volume from the great expectations we might have from his other books.

    1 out of 5 stars don't forget your machete........2006-07-24

While the book is a very informative one, Keegan is apparently talented in the art of digression. He spends the fist sixty-four pages of his literary labor extolling the virtues of America and its inhabitants, and describing (to what end, I cannot tell) his innumerable vacations, trips, and adventures in and about North America. He also (for reasons similarly ambiguous) chooses to include in this preface, a roundabout, labyrinthine discourse on his personal thoughts and experiences to do with England and France in addition to his lengthy (but vaguely on topic) treatise on America. These commentaries are, unlike the rest of the book, absolutely unreadable, forgettable, and just bad. One must plod through them, all the time conscious of mounting apathy and distaste. Their relevance is very near nihility and their pith very near brimful.

2 out of 5 stars Keegan's Book is less a history than a commercial venture.......2006-02-22

John Keegan has a pretty good reputation as an historian, but in this venture he has put together a hurried and clearly commercial product that does not do him justice. His understanding of the American Indian and how they made war is pitiful. He quotes Lewis & Clark as authority for the fact that the Blackfoot are part of the Sioux tribe, a mistake unlikely to be made by an American expert. He further considers the Sioux to have been the most warlike of the plains tribes, and in that he is just wrong. The Comanche hold that honor for their continued battles with the Spanish and then the Texans over a period of more than a hundred years.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, but not standard Keegan.......2005-10-14

Readers who have never had the privilege and good fortune to read John Keegan's histories should probably start with other works by the author.

Fields of Battle covers notable conflicts on North American shores, beginning with the colonization of Canada by the French, and moving on to the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, and conflicts with the Indians.

What makes Fields of Battle special, however, is that it is a profoundly personal journey by the author across battlegrounds and historic locations throughout the United States. Keegan employs his extensive traveling and historical erudition to explore his own spiritual and cultural identity -- that of British historian in love with America. In bringing his own complex perspective as a "foreigner" to our shores, Keegan shows us what we didn't know about ourselves.

Keegan's account of conflicts with Native Americans is relatively uncharitable to them. Readers who are accustomed to simplistic, typically Leftist whitewashings of the often stark brutality and recalcitrance of Indian tribes will find this history distinctly unpalatable. To his credit, Keegan does not shy away from describing American mistakes, but holds the perspective that there always was, is, and should be room in North America for both populations.

Finally, to readers insufficiently acquainted with the author's other writing to give him the respect he merits, Fields of Battle may come off as excessively sentimental and wistful. For those not in that group, Fields of Battle is yet another history by the preeminent John Keegan to savor and add to your book case.

    Book Description

While many soldiers in the army of the Confederate States of America fought on famous fields like Gettysburg and Antietam, others demonstrated equal valor in lesser known places. Here are collected, for the first time, the accounts of four little known pieces of Confederate history. These four pieces are important components in understanding Confederate life in both small and large scale.

The first section concerns the battle of Dinwiddie Court House on March 31, 1865, the last significant Confederate victory and the prelude to the battle of Five Forks the next day. The second section chronicles the experiences of Col. Charles C. Blacknall of the 23rd North Carolina Infantry, whose letters offer insight into the life of an officer and his personal struggles before his death from wounds received at the battle of Winchester. The third section examines a tragic and bloody series of conflicts and retaliations in southeast Missouri that demonstrated the revenge and violence against civilians that often erupted during the war. Finally, the history of General Hospital Number One, at Kittrell Springs, is analyzed, including accounts from the hospital's chaplain and its chief surgeon, and many of the last words they recorded in the performance of their duties.

These four accounts illustrate very personal experiences of war by Confederate soldiers, in their own words from letters and diaries, period and contemporary photographs, and maps.

4 out of 5 stars Confederate Courage on Other Fields.......2000-07-19

This book delivers what it promises... 4 battles you surely would not have studied (unless you happened to be a "local" to one of the sites), seperate from one another but tied together by the crimson thread of Courage.

    Great Stuff!

I highly recommend reading this book if you are a fan of Military History, a student of the "Civil War", or simply attracted to real acts of Heroism & Courage from an era blessed with a level of integrity and grit that is only a faded memory to America today.

5 out of 5 stars Uncommon Courage - Common Confederates.......2000-07-03

To borrow the words of Shakespeare, "Courage mounteth with occasion". Far from the grand movements of the armies, the great battles and the central figures of the Civil War, one finds thousands of examples of personal courage of men who met the occasion, but have been largely forgotten by history.

Mark Crawford in "Confederate Courage on Other Fields" does great justice to four of these lesser-known stories of sacrifice, bravery in the face of great danger, suffering, and devotion to duty by men fighting for the Confederate cause. I found each tale to be well researched, insightful and easy to read.

"'Tisn't life that matters! `Tis the courage you bring to it" -Sir Hugh Walpole. I believe Colonel Charles Blacknall of the 23rd North Carolina Infantry, as described in Crawford's book, exemplifies the courageous leadership exhibited by many men of the south. A wealthy, educated planter, Blacknall hated drilling, the study of tactics and many of the trappings of the military. However, belief in a cause led him to great accomplishment, at a price of personal sacrifice, ultimately his own life. As you read his letters, and gain insight into his devotion to his family, and his love and understanding of his men, you will admire this fellow who gave all for what he believed in.

My primary reason for buying this book was my lifelong interest of events in the bitter struggle for control of Southeast Missouri. Though considered a backwater of the War and often ignored by historians, the violence of partisan and guerilla actions in these border counties profoundly affected everyone living in the region. Instead of a five-hour skirmish or five-day battle, the fate of this area was sealed in five years of ugly, shocking bloodletting and destruction. Most folks fled. In many parts of Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas the bitterness remains to this day. Crawford's treatment of the conflict between Major James Wilson on the Union side and Colonel Timothy Reeves on the Confederate side is the most fair, accurate and honest I have read. A consequence of this contest was the execution of prisoners on both sides. In reading this account you will come to appreciate the bravery and gallantry of men caught up in a struggle without rules and often driven by revenge that discouraged noble actions.

You will finish this book with an expanded understanding of the "Brother's War", and the tremendous sacrifice of the average Confederate soldier as he faced danger in a courageous or fearless manner. I hope Mark will consider a sequel exploring the courage of Union men. I heartily recommend this book!

New trends in the writing of new history—and what it means to information science!

History has been devalued, causing a lack of career prospects for historians, a decrease in vocations to the history profession, and historical discontinuity between generations. History Under Debate: International Reflection on the Discipline is a recap of the crucial Second International Historia a Debate conference, held on July 17, 1999 in Santiago de Compostela. This book details the comparative critical perspectives on history, historians, their audiences, and the coming trends that will inevitably impact information science. The in-depth examination provides innovative approaches to historians as they redefine their discipline in relation to the global society of the new millennium while presenting invaluable insights for librarians, social scientists, and political scientists.

History Under Debate: International Reflection on the Discipline examines how the writing of history in the twenty-first century is revitalized by international comparative historiography, thanks to new technologies and the multinational integration processes in economy, politics, culture, and academics. The first section discusses the Historia a Debate (HaD) Forum and Movement, detailing the need for change to restore history as a vital global subject in modern times. The remainder of the book consists of reflective and comparative views on the study of history and historiography as well as history in and about Spain and its relation to the rest of the world. The book explores new ways for moving the discipline beyond sources and source criticism alone to a different concept of the historical profession as a science with a human subject that discovers the past as people construct it. Included in this book is the English translation of the HaD Manifesto—a proposal designed to unify historians of the twenty-first century and ensure a new dawn for history, its writings, and its teachings.

History Under Debate: International Reflection on the Discipline includes vital discussions on:

            "Linguistic Turn," Postmodernism, and Deconstruction
            gender studies and social history
objectivity and subjectivity in historical interpretation
multiple views of history from differing times and places
history as criticism, literature, and reconstruction

History Under Debate: International Reflection on the Discipline is an essential resource that teaches historians, librarians, social scientists, and humanists how to use cross-border development and new global historiographic networks to bring hope for a future in history.

              5 out of 5 stars Inspiring!.......2007-10-05

I listened to his music in the early 1980's never realizing what his life was like. Although his life on earth was brief, his intensity and passion along with his unwavering determination to discover the purpose for his life and, when he found it in Jesus, to be authentic and determined in his faith, is an encouragement to anyone journeying on the narrow path that Christ calls us to. His life clearly displays how much God loves and seeks us out even when we are not living according to His will. A definite must read!

5 out of 5 stars Like his life, it ended too soon........2007-09-13

I grew up listening to the Music of Keith Green. My parents were big fans, and to them, Keith was more then just a singer.
I slowly stopped listening to his music when I got older, and thought that the new music I listened to had a better sound and a more meaningful message, simply because it was newer music. But then I started listening to Keith Green again, and saw that his music is timeless, and can still change lives.

I picked up this book, and started reading it right away. The tone read very much like a novel, with pictures every now and then to show you how Keith and those around him had changed over time. At first, I wasn't sure how I felt about there being pictures so much, but then I saw the effect they had on me.

I got to know Keith as if he were a friend of mine. I got to see his struggles, his fears, his likes, his dislikes; I got to shake hands with Keith. His story of how he came to know Jesus is one that can touch anyone.

Ultimately, when the book started to end, I knew how he was going to die. I knew it was coming. I even looked ahead to see what chapter it happens in. Even though I knew it was coming, I still started to cry.
I spent my time reading this book, and getting to know Keith, his children, and his friends, that I he died all over again. I missed him again.

Still, with that said, I think my favorite part in the book is the story of how they had a cow die, and they couldn't get a butcher out to the farm (because the butcher has to kill the animal he'll be butchering), so they did it themselves.

With all that said, this is an amazing story that every Christian should read. Even if you weren't a fan of his music, it is still an amazing story.

Melody green did an amazing job at letting us in on her life with Keith Green. She is very open and honest and makes it easy to follow. It is very easy to relate to for practically anyone. Some parts brought tears to my eyes and it brings you to self reflect where you are at spiritually. I highly recommend this book!

Keith Green's book "No Compromise" was an in depth look at this Christian mans life. He lived his life solely for God, and never looked back. He was constantly examining himself to see if he measured up to how a Christian life should be led. He was an inspiration to me of how to live for Jesus!

This book is a great book describing a man who lived a life loving the Lord and encountering some of the issues we individually face. This just goes to show that we all can stand out and trust the Lord. Keith was a man who chose to live a life with No Compromise with his relationship with the Lord.

No Compromise is the perfect title for this book, because Keith green did not compromise when it came to the Christian life. He loved Jesus more than anything else in the world, and it comes through in this biography written by his widow Melody Green.

You will read of Keith's early interest in spiritual things, his life in the 70's hippie sub-culture, his shattering conversion to Christ in response to the Spirit-filled preaching of Kenn Gullickson, (and his wife's conversion the following week), and his excitement at coming to know Jesus.

You also read of his zeal in winning people to the Lord, and how over the course of months, he felt the leading of the Lord to make Christian music albums. You read of his love for the writings of the Rev. Charles Finney, and his desire to see people totally broken and spilled out before the Lord in repentance and faith.

You read of his later interest in world missions, and his tragic death in a plane crash (along with his son Josiah and daughter Bethany and others who were on board).

Melody then has a brief appendix illustrating how keiths music stills fans into flame the fire of faith in the lives of so many. I am one of those people, and I highly recommned this stirring biography.

5 out of 5 stars Exciting tales of oft-neglected venues in WW 1 Aviation.......1998-03-27

Over the Battlefronts is a fascinating and well-researched account of some of World War One aviation's forgotten venues and faces.Utilizing personal accounts otherwise unavailable to most researchers, Kilduff takes his readers to the Adriatic and Palestine, shows them bombing raids against England and balloon-busters over France. Don't look for the famous aces here; Kilduff's focus is on the unsung heroes of the War.

The book is well organized, with photographs marked as to relevant chapters and an index which is meticulously arranged to actually be of service to the reader. There is also an extensive bibliography to aid further study.

I have always found Kilduff to be a masterful story-teller who cuts to the chase in a refreshing fashion. At first glance, this seems like a slender volume, but don't be deceived; Kilduff packs into these 192 pages memorable scenes, men and actions.

The tone is immediately set when Kilduff recounts his meeting with Hanns-Gerd Rabe. Rabe, a German observer, impressed Kilduff with the assertion that such "grosse Kanonen" ['big guns'] as Richthofen and Udet were instrumental in keeping spirits up on the home front; but the rest of them, Rabe included, were there solely to protect the common soldier in the trenches, who were fighting for what they believed in. The subjects Kilduff chooses to present here are every bit as worthy of note as their more famous Kamaraden:

We learn, for instance, of Gottfried von Banfield, the "Eagle of Trieste" -- an English-born naturalized Austrian who flew for his adopted homeland in the Naval air service. He flew bi-winged seaplanes in an amazing array of activities around the Adriatic. Though most of the men against whom he flew were Italian, this did not seem to keep the natives of Trieste from adopting him in the years after the war. Banfield settled among them, married a local girl, and lived out his life in Trieste.

Then there is Hans Woestmann, a balloon observer for Germany over Flanders and on the Russian front. To most casual readers of history, observation balloons seem to be nothing but gasbags, merely targets for someone else to shoot down. Woestmann's experiences show this is anything but true. The rivalry between the ballooners and the aeroplane jockeys is shown in an amusing account of a Russian plane and its crew being forced down when Woestmann shoots his pistol at them and makes a lucky hit -- only to have the plane crew attempt to convince German interrogators that they had been brought down by another plane, to escape the ignominy of having been taken out by a gasbag!

Nor are the other combatants in the war passed over. One of the most fascinating chapters in _Battlefronts_ is "Bombers Across the Rhine", in which French and British operations against Germany, both alone and together, are examined in some detail. Historians of the Second World War will be interested in the comparisons and conclusions that Kilduff draws between the use of long-range bombers in both world wars against civilian targets. I could not help but think of London and Dresden when reading Kilduff's conclusion: "Sadly, the lessons of the First World War were lost on the belligerents who initiated the Second World War."

A fascinating segment of Zeppelin history -- often under-represented in aviation histories -- is retold in "Last Flight of The L 48", which led an attack on London in the summer of 1917. Kilduff's description of the events surrounding her demise is vivid -- and reminiscent of other attempts to reach England by air, that would fail for some of the same reasons some twenty-odd years later. The honorable treatment accorded the casualties by airmen of the RFC points out succinctly that one does not need to stay with the famous aces to find the chivalry so often lauded when reading of early aviation.

The rest of the book is rounded out by studies of some fascinating personalities who served in interesting ways, in unusual venues such as Palestine and Italy. Gabriele d'Annunzio, possibly *the* elder statesman among World War One flyers -- he was fifty-two -- was a poet, a fighter, and a pilot. The lifestyle he led might make a fine movie. D'Annunzio survived the war, dying in 1938 -- just in time to be spared seeing his beloved Italy pulled into the Axis.

We see German pilot Hans Henkel flying over Jerusalem shortly before Easter, 1916, whereupon he exulted: "Thou secret longing of all who have spoken of Christ, as the first German allowed up here to look down upon thee, I greet thee in exultation from the joyous heights!"

We also see the exploits of Clayton Knight and the other American volunteers to the RAF, from the heat of their Texas training grounds to their exploits in Flanders, and get a first-hand description from Knight himself of his famous encounter with Jasta 29's Harald Auffarth, who just missed becoming another Pour le Merite ace by the war's ending. Knight puts rather a cap on the whole subject of the war and aviation, with his pointed observation: "War is a rotten, dirty business, started by politicians and suffered through by people like you and me. But there was something about being a flyer in those days that let you get beyond animosity and hatred...."

And there is something about this book, something that will keep you coming back. For all that I've gone on and on, I have but scratched the surface of what _Battlefronts_ contains. It is a quick read -- not because the material is lightweight, but rather because Kilduff takes his readers to the scene and then lets those who were there speak for themselves. It has much the same flavor and accessibility of subject as other Kilduff books on the subject. It is a worthy companion to the many studies of Western Front aviation and the aces, filling the gaps such accounts sometimes leave behind. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

I have had the pleasure of reading every Barbara Kingsolver book printed. I have shared them all with the one's I love. This book, Last Stand, is the last one of Kinsolver's works that I purchased. It is the most magnificent coffee table style book I have ever seen.

I loved the photos, the artwork, the amazingness of the American wilderness and the commentary attached to each section.

I am an Australian, living in Australia. If Barbara Kingsolver could only describe our historic landscape in such a beautiful way. We have vast tracts of open spaces equally beautiful but never portrayed in such a wonderful way,for the world to see.

Reading this book, looking at the pictures, actually bought tears to my eyes. Following on from Prodigal Summer, and Poisonwood Bible, as I have done, this lady touches one's soul. I have read a few reviews, some liked this, some didn't like that. Well I loved the whole glorious thing.

This book is a bargain at $1000, so if you can buy it for 40 dollars,it is way beyond a bargain,it is a priceless gem. it will be the best $40 you can ever spend.

I have shared this with so many people and all are in total awe.(maybe we Australians see the world differently to you Yanks).

Again I say BRILLIANT, Barbara Kingsolver and Annie Griffiths Belt have earned their place in Heaven with this magnificent, worldly creation. Congratulations to both of them for a magnificent job, truly done well.

I presented a copy of this book to the love of my life. I wrote inside the front cover. "Dear Rosy, we have enjoyed so many great Kingsolver books. This one is truly spectacular, I hope you enjoy it,Enjoy,Enjoy, love Andrew" and I hope that if you purchase it, you too will derive the same immense pleasure that I have.

5 out of 5 stars The photo images reminded me of the great impressionists.......2004-04-25

When you open up National Geographic's coffee table photo album entitled LAST STAND: AMERICA'S VIRGIN ISLANDS you immediately are aware of very unusual photographic techniques. A fast glance to the back of the book succinctly explains:
"The photographs appearing in this book represent two types of work. Roughly half were shot on color transparency film. The rest were shot on black-and-white infrared negative film and the prints then hand-colored by photographer Annie Griffiths Belt. The borders were specially created by designer Jen Christiansen. Captions for photographs were deliberately kept vague as to location to discourage visitation to these fragile natural sights."

With this above information firmly implanted in my brain I slowly re-inspected the brilliant photo images and concurred with the creators of this book that it is best not to advertise the locations of these intensely poetic photographic masterpieces.

You may ask why? The reply is simply that many of these photo images tell a story of America's Virgin Lands, their wildlife and habitats which at all costs need to be preserved. It is in fact the "Last Stand" and the photos serve as a strong invitation to contemplate the earth, trees, seasons and oceans and what it would mean if we continue to destroy these marvels of nature.

The book is a compilation of highly sensitive images illustrating the infinite mysterious faces of nature. Moreover, we are exposed to the fine sense of observation and perfect technical skills of Annie Griffiths Belt's photography.
Flipping through the pages of this photo album we invariably can't help but admire the richness of the foliage of the live oaks of South Carolina, the haunting Georgia Barrier Island, the whisper of the winds in the trees of Northern Florida, and the mystique of the North Cascades Forest of Northern Washington. These and many more infinite faces of nature are displayed within the five sections of the book that are divided as follows: wetlands, woodlands, coasts, grasslands and dry lands. Each section reaffirms the delicate power of Belt's photography and inspires us to share her emotions.

After savouring the photos illustrated in this book, I would have to concede that I felt there was a kind of impressionistic quality attached to these images that reminded me of the masterpieces of such great artists such as Degas, Monet, and Pissaro.

4 out of 5 stars beautiful color photograpy.......2004-02-13

"Last Stand" is primarily a collection of nature photography with chapter introductions written by Barbara Kingsolver. This is an environmental work in that the aim of the book is to educate about some of the beautiful regions of our country and to tell that there is a significant human threat to the environment. Kingsolver writes passionately about how the human settlement and human wastefulness is cause further destruction of the environment. The photography in this book is broken up not into regions of the country, but types of ecological regions: wetlands, forest areas, etc.

The photography by Annie Griffith Belt is absolutely beautiful. There are two types of photography. The first type is black and white infrared photography that has been hand colored. These pictures look like paintings, and while pretty, I was not as interested in these pictures. The photographs that I found to be stunning were the simple color pictures. We get to see beautiful landscapes that would make a very nice postcard. These are images that make a strong case that these are places we need to preserve.

I should state that I do not know anything about photography, so I cannot speak for the craft of taking pictures and how well the photographs come out as technical pieces. I just enjoyed the photography.

My suggestion is that one should look at this book for the beautiful photography and not for Kingsolver's section introductions. However, if someone is interested in reading that these are beautiful places that are being ruined by a human cause, by all means, read the text in this book. Barbara Kingsolver is a wonderful writer, but when she has a cause and is writing non-fiction, she is not nearly as interesting as she is in her fiction. This book is worth looking at for the color photography.
