4 out of 5 stars Lots of food for thought........2001-12-02

If you and your spouse can sit down before having kids (even before getting married) and talk about religion it is a good thing. This book led to us really problem solving our day to day living between my husband and myself and our religions. This book was a great starting point for discussions.

I particularly liked the questions that provided a starting point for discussions. I also liked the stories of other couples and how they handled their differences. I liked the ideas that this book has for different ways to handle different religions.
The chapters are short and easy to read in one sitting.

One thing we learned was to focus on the similarities and go from there. We were also reminded that this is a multi cultural/mulit religion world and that to get along we need to learn to respect and understand other religions. Very good.

What a great way to start this type of discussion.

1 out of 5 stars Amateurish, derivative, diffuse, dishonest ........2005-03-04

van Creveld has written a disappointingly careless, amateurish and derivative book. I read it in anticipation of tackling his more recent and highly regarded "Transformation of War". However, reading this one, which was published in 1989, has made me very reluctant to invest time and energy in the newer "Transformation", no matter how highly regarded it is.

His writing style is bombastic and verbose and his train of thought diffuse. I found myself having to constantly rewrite his sentences in my head in order to make them coherent. Whatever original thoughts he may have, and I don't think there are many, get lost in his digressive style.

He makes some rather curious statements for an expert on military history. He dismisses, for example, the military utility of the oxcart, completely overlooking the very potent military application made of the oxcart by the Afrikaner Voortrekkers in the Zulu Wars, where, at the famous Battle of Blood River, circled oxcarts served admirably as a mobile fortress. (This was of course also common practice during the same time period for immigrants on America's Oregon Trail). He describes the stirrup as "not representing military technology, properly speaking", yet later discusses at length maps and roads as military technology. He may be right about the stirrup, but isn't he then wrong about maps and roads? And why make such a trivially gratuitous statement in the first place?

At another point he casually slanders Winston Churchill (not the first to do so), describing British casualties in the last battle of the Mahdi War in the Sudan as being "victims of an ill-considered charge led by Winston Churchill against the wishes of the expedition's commander, General Kitchener". In fact, Churchill was at the time a lowly subaltern in his early 20's, in charge of less than 25 lancers in the second troop from the rear of his cavalry regiment, and was in no position to lead a charge. The charge was ordered by the regiment's colonel, and may have been an attempt to pre-empt a charge by the Mahdists. In any event, this is how Churchill describes the events in "A Roving Commission". Naturally, we don't know where van Creveld got his version of events because he has no footnotes. He could have easily made his rather obvious point (that, technological differences aside, the Mahdists' tactics were suicidal) without slandering Churchill.

These would be minor details, except that they run on for pages. He reminds me of an undergraduate trying to "B.S." on an essay exam. He throws out lots of "facts", but correlates them poorly, offers little synthesis, and no original insight.

His chapters on terrorism and nuclear war are particularly disappointing, follow the same empty pattern, promising much, delivering virtually nothing.

This is not a scholarly book in any sense, in spite of its pretensions. There are no footnotes, just general references to secondary sources. His "bibliographical essay" is mostly an exercise in self-aggrandizement at the expense of his betters, including everyone from Sun Tzu to Lidell Hart.

I happened to be reading William H. McNeill's "The Pursuit of Power" at the same time as I read van Creveld's book, and noted with surprise that van Creveld appears to have cribbed his outline and much of his narrative directly from McNeill. I can't find language specific enough to accuse van Creveld of direct plagiarism, but it seems pretty clear that van Creveld just superficially reworked sections of McNeill's book, particularly in the early chapters, and then had the nerve in his "bibliographic essay" to say McNeill's proof of his thesis is unsuccessful! McNeill in fact substantiates his somewhat complex thesis quite well, far better than van Creveld does for his own simple-minded ideas. van Creveld got his PhD from the London School of Economics, while McNeill was a world-famous professor of history at the University of Chicago, which is no doubt sufficient explanation for van Creveld's "dog in the manger" attitude toward McNeill.

In my opinion, van Creveld's book is not only unsuccessful, it is disreputable, and shouldn't have been published.

(Van Creveld's November 2004 paper entitled "Why Iraq Will End as Vietnam Did" shows that neither his powers of analysis nor his writing have improved with time.)

3 out of 5 stars Half Cocked.......2001-08-31

It has been suggested that several professional historians could live a comfortable and durable professional life working only on correcting the historical mistakes foisted upon the public by Martin Van Creveld. While I personally believe that this is a mild overstatement of the facts, I understand the reasoning behind the sentiment. However, it is perhaps unwise to criticise Van Creveld too harshly. His work undoubtedly brings attention to the field, and with attention flows the filthy lucre that supports legitimate historians in their search for the truth in history.
This book procedes from a single concept, that technology permeates war. Van Creveld's goal in this book is to explore the role that technology has played in the development and transformation of war. Van Creveld wants to explore not just the weapons of war, but the whole of technology as it interacts with war. Although he specifically denies that the book is organized chronologically, this is in fact how the text is arranged. There are four parts to the book, and each part contains five chapters.
In part one, "The Age of Tools from Earliest Times to 1500 AD" the five chapters are "Field Warfare," "Siege Warfare," "The Infrastructure of War," "Naval Warfare," and "Irrational Technology." The unifying concept identified by Van Creveld as the reason for this division is that the motive power behind most technology in this period was the muscles of animals and men. The first two chapters are fairly self explanatory in their titles. "The Infrastructure of War," according to Van Creveld, includes writing, cartography, and logistics. In "Naval Warfare" he focuses upon the weapons used aboard fighting ships and the method of propulsion (oars) used in purpose designed ships. The final chapter, "Irrational Technology" explores those weapons of the period that appear illogical in their design, either by over decoration or extreme size.
Part two, "The Age of Machines, 1500-1800" roughly coresponds with the Military Revolution. Again the first three chapters are "Field Warfare," "Siege Warfare," and "The Infrastructure of War." The last two chapters in this section are "Command of the Sea," and "The Rise of Professionalism." Curiosly, Van Creveld barely notes the existance of the Military Revolution as such. The issue I own is the second, "Revised and Expanded" edition which received copyright in 1991. Timing is therefore not an issue. Although he mentions several of the same concepts, the rise of the artillery and the resulting changes in fortress design, he uses slightly different terminology when he does this. For example, the artillery fortress is called "the italian design" not "trace italienne." Van Creveld acknowledges neither Roberts' original thesis nor Parker's refinement to the concept. Van Creveld does not use footnotes or endnotes in this book. Instead there is a bibliographic essay at the end of the work. None of the material he used appear to be primary source.
Part three, "The Age of Systems, 1830-1945" changes the first two chapters to "Mobilization Warfare," and "Land Warfare." This conceptual shift allows Van Creveld to introduce the larger "system" of national infratructure as a war making technology. The chapter on "Command of the Air" attempts to recount the history of air warfare from the use of balloons all the way through the end of WWII in fourteen pages. He similarly tries to describe the changes in sea warfare from pre-monitor sailing ships through Essex Class aircraft carriers in eighteen pages. The attempts fail.
However, redeeming these shortcomings, one of the best chapters of the book follows these two overambitious portions. "The Invention of Invention" is a chapter which is probably worth a book length examination. Though Van Creveld assigns only seventeen pages to the concept, it does show that at least in some areas he is moving into new territory. His blurring of the line between military history and the history of technology is at its best in this chapter.
The final part, "The Age of Automation, 1945 to Present" covers the smallest period of time. Ironically, it appears that even Van Creveld realizes that even this smaller chunk of time contains too much material to adequately treat within the space allotted. In this portion of the book, the chapters largely divorce from material technology and foucus upon systems and concepts. The first chapter, "Computerized War," deals with the explosion of information in modern war, and the various technological and doctrinal solutions developed to overcome and utilize the information. Chapter seventeen is a short treatsie on "Nuclear War" that one gets the impression he only included because he knew critics would castigate him if he ignored the subject. The chapter "Integrated War" is actually quite decent.
Still, overall I wouldn't buy this book a second time.

Book Description

Race to the Moon is a suspenseful thriller about the 30-year clash between the United States and the Soviet Union to be the first to put a man on the moon. This true account is heavy with intrigue, espionage, and controversy. Beginning with a 1961 pledge by President John F. Kennedy to plant the Stars and Stripes on the lunar surface by the end of the decade, the story flashes back to the first days of World War II. At that time, England was tipped off by a high Nazi official that the Third Reich was developing revolutionary long-range rockets. This same source clandestinely provided documents that shocked British scientists: The Germans were 25 years ahead of England and the United States in rocket development! And then, in September 1944, 60-foot-long V-2 rockets, for which there was no defense, began raining down on London, causing enormous destruction and loss of life. Even while the fighting was still raging in Germany in the spring of 1945, a handful of young U.S. Army officers scored a colossal coup: They connived to steal 100 of the huge V-2s that had been found in an underground factory. They were dismantled and slipped by train out of Germany, destination White Sands, New Mexico. Then began a no-holds-barred search for German rocket scientists in the chaos of a defeated Third Reich, with the Americans and British on one side and the Russians on the other. Within weeks of the close of the war, Wernher von Braun and 126 of his rocket team members were corraled, shipped to the United States, and began working secretly on missile development. At the same time, the Soviets literally kidnapped other German rocket scientists and sent them to Russia to continue their space work. In the years ahead, Wernher von Braun and his German rocket team, nearly all of whom became naturalized citizens of the United States, collaborated with American scientists to overcome enormous space achievements by the Soviets--and bungling by Washington politicians--to send Neil Armstrong scampering about on the moon in 1969.

1 out of 5 stars A Disappointing Book.......2004-01-07

This book, written by a journalist who has made a career out of writing World War II adventures, is neither about the race to the Moon nor the U.S. rivalry with the U.S.S.R. The majority of it is, instead, about the World War II efforts of the German rocket team under Wernher von Braun at Peenemunde, its wartime exploits, its surrender to American forces in 1945, and only tangentially about its post-war activities in the United States. Only 6 of 24 chapters actually deal with Project Apollo, and none of the book goes beyond the popular literature on either the Germans or Apollo. Your time would be better used reading any number of other books on Apollo, especially "...the Heavens and the Earth: A Political History of the Space Age," by Walter A. McDougall, which received the Pulitzer Prize for History.

5 out of 5 stars Great story!!.......2003-06-27

Fascinating and well told story from the conception of space travel in the 1930s to the Moon landing. Much more to the story than you would imagine. Very intriguing and exciting story. A must read for any WWII historian.

4 out of 5 stars An exciting but flawed book.......1998-02-19

Race to the Moon is primarily an action/adventure/spy story. Thing is, this story is true. Fascinating accounts of the German development of rockets, their use in WWII, the exciting accounts of the United States' efforts to aquire this technology at the end of the war, and the desire of von Braun and his team to find the Americans. Intresting accounts of von Braun and team's early expereiences in the U.S. during the late 40's and 50's. However, don't expect this book to teach you much about the Soviet effort, it is glossed over. The book is also light on the technology of the US/Soviet space race. For example, on page three, it has first man in spce Yuri Garagrin orbiting the earth for four and a half days! On page 179, it has the entire Apollo spacecraft stack injected into orbit by the first stage! (I'll bet von Braun didn't know he could leave the second stage off.) And a picture of a Saturn 1B is misidentified as a Saturn V. With these kinds of obvious errors, it makes me wonder what other errors are in this book. For better sources of inforamation on Apollo try A Man on the Moon by Andrew Chaikin, for the Soviet story try Korolev by James Harford.

3 out of 5 stars Convincing account of the fall of the Umayyad Caliphate.......2004-04-19

While the many details present in this work will make it unpalatable for most non-specialists, this work nonetheless offers a highly cogent explanation of the fall of the Umayyad Caliphate. Against traditional arguments attributing the fall to inner conflicts such as provncial and factional unrest, Blankinship attributes the fall to the contradictions inherent in jihad, itself the impetus for the expansion of the political realm of Islam. Jihad proved, eventually, the be not only unsustainable but also deeply self-destructive in the end as it exhausted all of the states resources and tested the loyalty of the state's armies as it continually faced ever more wild and formidable enemies with diminishing returns and profits from bounty. Blankinship, in the end, gives a convincing argument that Hisham b. abd al-Malik's reign was not the height but was rather they beginning of the fatal decline of the Umayyad dynasty.

      Book Description

You think you're human. But what does that mean? How can humanity be defined? Felipe Fernandez-Armesto takes us on an enlightening journey through the history of humankind to reveal the challenges to our most fundamental belief - that we are, and have always been, human. Chimps and humans are objectively so alike that an anthropologist from Mars might classify them together; advances in artificial intelligence mean that humans no longer have exclusive access to reason, consciousness and imagination; developments in genetics threaten humanity with an uncertain future. The harder we cling to the concept of humanity, the more slippery it becomes. But if it breaks down altogether, what will this mean for human values, human rights, and the defence of human dignity? So You Think You're Human? confronts these problems from a historical perspective, showing how our current understanding of what it means to be human has been shaken by new challenges from science and philosophy. FFA shows how our concept of humankind has changed over time, tracing its faltering expansion to its present limits and arguing that these limits are neither fixed or scientifically verifiable. Controversially, he proposes that we have further to go in developing our concept of humankind and that we need to rethink it as a matter of urgency.

5 out of 5 stars The history about WHAT humankind is..........2005-01-18

This book deals with how mankind has tried to define humankind. Our we human because our body is different from other animals? But apes are so close to us when it comes to DNA. Because we have a soul or mind? Can we even prove those things exist? Because we have culture and works of art? But don't machines now write stories and don't chimps paint?
Will we ever find something to define us as humans when we don't even know what being human means? I enjoyed this book and, funny enough as a manga fan, have to compare it to _Ghost In The Shell_ and _AppleSeed_ in the questions it asks.

3 out of 5 stars Cogito Ergo Sum.......2004-08-21

This book is not quite what I thought it was when I purchased it. The jacket art shows a variety of hominid forms as well as some futuristic machine forms, so I thought the book was a compact anthropology of the genus with, perhaps, some interesting speculation upon the future. What the book is instead is a philosophy in which Fernandez-Armesto cites his thesis that "humanity" as a concept can no longer be defined in unique terms: toolmaker, language user, culture creator--many species exhibit these traits, ergo, humanity is not so special after all.

Well, I never thought humanity was so special, but I have always been able to recognize a human from other higher mammals. Matters of degree do not lend themselves easily to the need for hard edged truth, but matters of degree are what separate us from other higher mammals and futuristic machine intelligences, and matters of degree are enough.

The book is worth a read once you understand what it is; Fernandez-Armesto cites many useful historical references. I would say, however, that there is one human trait he failed to explore, and that is evil. I have never observed deliberate evil in other animal forms, only humanity.

This book contains spurious research... the author was only able to examine records briefly... give us a break! He is factually inaccurate in many areas, i.e., birthplace of Lillian Wilhelm Smith. The author inaccurately copied information from Donna Ashworth's well-researched book on the topic.

Having never read a Zane Grey novel, I don't know what led me to this book. Biography is my preferred genre, and the "adventures" part promised a good story. I think I dismissed "his women" as maybe something about his bachelor life or maybe some Annie Oakley types he met out west.

Was I surprised! I think his contemporary fans (as I envision them) would have been shocked. Pauly spares the details, but the picture is clear. Their lives with Grey belie their photos, which show these women as wholesome and modern for our times and theirs. Grey's condemnations of "jazz age morals" certainly helped to build his image (or brand) and the hypocrisy was a well covered trail. Pauly says this was only knowable in the last 10 years.

The early letters of wife Dolly are almost too painful to read. She deserves a bio of her own. She apparently took stock of her position and found fulfillment in raising children, business (a bank president!) and travel.

Grey was clearly intelligent, remarkably handsome and athletic. His flexibility is exemplified in transitions from dentistry to baseball, to roping mountain lions, to writing, to pioneering in the film industry, and inventing his own reel for sport fishing. He emerged from childhood with emotional and financial needs.

Pauly does a good job in presenting all of this. The book details what is known of his childhood and early adulthood, how he came to travel west, the novels, the movies, the outdoore life. Pauly has piqued my interest in the Zane Grey novel... perhaps I'll try one.

5 out of 5 stars An Eye-Opener onto Zane Grey.......2007-01-19

This is the most information I've ever seen on Zane Grey anywhere. He certainly was not like any of the characters he created. Apparently a charismatic man, but rather self-centered. After he had 3 children with his wife, he stopped spending any time with her or the children - his younger son remembers spending only one full day with his father in his entire youth. Grey took a series of mistresses with him on his yearly travels - and wrote to his wife about them!!! And told her he loved her and that she understood him better than anyone!
There is a good bit of well researched info about his youth and about his life. I enjoyed reading this book and finding out more about Grey's life. If you have enjoyed reading either his Westerns or his books on fishing and the outdoor life, this book wiil give you a "behind the scenes" look at those stories.

5 out of 5 stars Thundering Herd, Blundering Hero.......2006-07-10

Without the journals and letters which the Gray Estate has allowed Professor Pauly to peruse and quote, ZANE GREY: HIS LIFE might never have been written. They help to deepen, immeasurably, our appreciation of Grey's peculiarly American character.

In so many ways his American-ness is absolute. The zest for living, the expansive nature, the hail fellow well met sportsman side, his relations with women, especially with Dolly, his long-suffering wife--a woman he couldn't live with, yet couldn't live without. In one letter she notes that they had spent 7 days together in the whole of the past 12 months. Grey's traveling begins taking manic proportions shortly before the First World War, and continues for another 25 years, during which time he spends great fortunes on living it up and doing some world class angling. One yacht alone cost $300,000, in the midst of the Depression, plunging him finally into what amounted to them as abject poverty. Dolly couldn't even afford a movie ticket, she was scrimping so much.

Gray was a handsome man, the photos in the book revealing a big, strapping he-man type whom Harrison Ford might have played in earlier days. He seems to have cut right through the Gordian knot of Victorian prudery and found carnal love right away. Pauly's book makes one wonder if sexual freedom wasn't practiced on a much wider scale back in the day than we had previously imagined.

Pauly's big find is that Grey spent most of his writing life cheating on Dolly more or less openly, and she turned a blind eye, sometimes a condescending one, to his wild private life. He had the "decency" to bring his women on his months long excursions, whether to Rainbow Bridge or to Tahiti. They were hired as secretaries perhaps, but somehow wound up in his bed straightaway, posing for pornographic photos, hundreds of them (none of which are reproduced in the book). Apparently Grey was addicted to porn. Professor Pauly is a little at sea with this thundering herd of women and lacks the novelistic background which might have helped us tell them apart, for the most part. However one or two of them jump out from the pack, particularly the would-be writers among them who hoped that the famous Zane Grey would help them sell their work. He would--but only after he signed it with his own name and for his trouble he'd pocket 85 per cent of the proceeds.

This cheating and petty larceny and the wasteful spending are all symptoms of an underlying depression, or so it seems. He often felt his reasons for living slipping away. There was always a bigger silver marlin over the next horizon. "Driven" isn't the word for it!

Pauly gets so caught up in the drama of the decline and fall of the great Western writer, that he forgets to include any material that would interest us in Grey's novels, most of which, he convinces us, are inferior dribble. Book after book is disappointing, but there must have been a few good books perhaps early on? For a critical biography, this one is all too critical!

5 out of 5 stars A superbly integrated account of one of America's most popular authors of the western novel.......2005-11-13

Zane Grey: His Life, His Adventures, His Women is a superbly integrated account of one of America's most popular authors of the western novel. Soundly documented and a seminal piece of biographical scholarship by Thomas H. Pauly (Professor of English, University of Delaware) fans of Zane Grey will learn that he was a disappointed aspirant to major league baseball, an unhappy dentist, and took up writing at the age of thirty. His personal life was as colorful as any of his novels which made him the most successful American author of the 1920s, a popularizer of hunting and fishing, an early conservationist and wilderness protection advocate, and a significant figure in the early development of the film industry. He became a world traveler and a man whose marriage was critical to his literary success. But his domestic relationship was stressed by long separations, deep depressions, and multiple affairs with women. Enthusiastically recommended reading, Zane Grey is an impressive biography of a complicated and multifaceted man that is as engaging and entertaining as it is informed and informative.

          4 out of 5 stars Aristotle's 'Politics' still essential.......2000-06-18

The Greek philosopher and scientist Aristotle possessed one of the most remarkable intellects of all time. He contributed to the body of knowledge in areas as diverse as logic and biology, ethics and physics, psychology and politics. Although his work 'The Politics' has been widely published, few versions have been as effective as this in placing his political commentary into the conext of his time. Certainly this contextualisation is this edition's greatest strength, and the feature which most clearly sets it apart from most other currently available translations.

'The Politics' remains an essential feature in the literature of politics and philosophy. Whether the reader is a first year political science student or a senior lecturer seeking to replace that well-worn second (or third) copy of an earlier edition, the particular book will be the ideal choice.

Second edition, Revised and Enlarged. London: Macmillan & Co., Limited, 1902. xcii, 331 pp. Frontis. Illus. Reprinted 2000 by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. LCCN 99-23952. ISBN 1-58477-004-X. Cloth. $75. By the author of the standard comprehensive history of classical scholarship, A History of Classical Scholarship. This scholarly examination of the textual evidence of the papyrus of what is known to be Aristotle's Constitution of Athens, which dated from 328 and 325 B.C., is enhanced by notes that pertain to the legal aspects of the work. A thorough introduction surveys Greek political literature prior to Aristotle's time and that ascribed to him, and concludes with a history of the Constitution itself. While other scholars may have already deciphered the papyrus, this work is distinguished by the provision of the text with critical notes on each page, followed by the Testimonia, which contain further evidence on the text, in the form of quotations in Greek, often providing passages in full for immediate reference. With a bibliography and English as well as Greek index.

                            Book Description

Most people equate Los Angeles with smog, sprawl, forty suburbs in search of a city-the great "what-not-to-do" of twentieth-century city building. But there's much more to LA's story than this shallow stereotype. History shows that Los Angeles was intensely, ubiquitously planned. The consequences of that planning-the environmental history of urbanism--is one place to turn for the more complex lessons LA has to offer.
Working forward from ancient times and ancient ecologies to the very recent past, Land of Sunshine is a fascinating exploration of the environmental history of greater Los Angeles. Rather than rehearsing a litany of errors or insults against nature, rather than decrying the lost opportunities of "roads not taken," these essays, by nineteen leading geologists, ecologists, and historians, instead consider the changing dynamics both of the city and of nature.
In the nineteenth century, for example, "density" was considered an evil, and reformers struggled mightily to move the working poor out to areas where better sanitation and flowers and parks "made life seem worth the living."
We now call that vision "sprawl," and we struggle just as much to bring middle-class people back into the core of American cities. There's nothing natural, or inevitable, about such turns of events. It's only by paying very close attention to the ways metropolitan nature has been constructed and construed that meaningful lessons can be drawn. History matters.
So here are the plants and animals of the Los Angeles basin, its rivers and watersheds. Here are the landscapes of fact and fantasy, the historical actors, events, and circumstances that have proved transformative over and over again. The result is a nuanced and rich portrait of Los Angeles that will serve planners, communities, and environmentalists as they look to the past for clues, if not blueprints, for enhancing the quality and viability of cities.

Los Angeles has long been equated with smog and urban sprawl, but there's more to its development story and problems than meets the eye, as William Deverell and Greg Hise explore in Land Of Sunshine: An Environmental History Of Metropolitan Los Angeles. From earliest times and old ecologies of the area to modern times, Land Of Sunshine provides a different environmental history of greater Los Angeles, providing essays by nineteen leading geologists, ecologists, and historians on the changing perceptions of density, environmental reform, and urban design standards. Urban planning readers, in particular, will welcome these essays lending insight into metropolitan Los Angeles' development influences.
