Book Description
Ask any parent what they want most for their child, and most likely you'll hear the same answer again and again: to see their children grow up into happy, healthy adults whose lives count for something. But ask those same parents what they're doing to equip their children for such a life and you'll get embarrassed silence.
Finally, parents can find help for this crucial task in a book that is encouraging, easy to grasp, and filled with great practical suggestions. In
Launching Your Kids for Life, Bob and Cheryl Reccord liken the job of equipping your children for success in life to the procedure that NASA undertakes to prepare for a shuttle launch. The Reccords, along with their friends Dr. Tommy Holloway, past director of the NASA Space Program and three-time shuttle astronaut David Leetsma point out that just as the shuttle must break through the Earth's gravitational force into space, so too must children break free into adulthood. But our children can't do it on their own. They need our help. They need us to equip them, to prepare them, to help them discover their life's mission, and to celebrate the milestones along the way. If we learn how to do this, then we can be sure that they can fly anywhere their wings will take them.

Book Description
In late February and early March of 1836, a Mexican army led by General Antonio López de Santa Anna lay siege to a mission known as the Alamo, held by a small band of rebels that included Davy Crockett, James Bowie, and William Travis. In the dark early morning of March 6, all inside the fort were dead -- and one of America's most enduring legends was born.
Randy Roberts and James S. Olson retell the story of the Alamo from both the Mexican and the American perspectives, delving into the historical accuracy of such myths as Bowie's famous line in the sand, Crockett's celebrated fight to the death, and the common portrayal of the Mexicans as ruthless killers. Separating fact from fiction, they trace how and why those fictions grew, from the rapid spread of the rallying cry "Remember the Alamo!" to the "patriotic" depictions of battle in American films and television to the potency of the Alamo as a symbol in Texas politics and American culture today.
Download Description
San Antonio, Texas, 1836. A Mexican army led by Santa Anna attacks a small fort called the Alamo. Disputes still rage over exactly what happened, why it happened, and how it should be remembered. Indeed, the battles fought over the memory of the Alamo have been almost as fierce as their subject. In a riveting combination of history and cultural analysis, historians Randy Roberts and James N. Olson blend a rich narrative of the battle -- told from the perspectives of both the Anglo and Mexican troops -- drawing from a wide range of sources, including newly released documents from Mexican military archives and just-discovered pages of the famous de la Pena diary. Still controversial after all these years, the events at the Alamo pose some fascinating questions: Did Crockett really die a hero, or did he surrender before a summary execution? And why have Americans built a shrine for an event that lasted no more than ninety minutes, and inflated it into one of the country's biggest tourist attractions? A full explanation of the San Antonio encounter requires a peeling back of many layers. With powerful writing, Roberts and Olson retell the story of a great American myth, and show how and why it endures. This original volume is sure to change the way readers "Remember the Alamo".
Customer Reviews:
An astute and well written history book........2007-03-07
It was a pleasure to read this book, very informative, well researched and finely written. Whatever your views are of the Alamo and its place in the history of Texas; this book was written by two astute historians with a careful attention to detail with reasoned views and opinions.
Brief but informative and concise histories are given of Travis, Crockett, Bowie, Santa Anna and the events that lead them to a common junction at the Alamo in 1836. My only exposure to the Alamo before this book was the John Wayne movie, so it was great to be able to read this professional account of the history of the Alamo and also its post history into the 21st century.
The authors also make the valid point that native Indians occupied Texas for hundreds of years before any Spanish, Mexican or Anglo claims on it. The history of Texas comes alive in this book and the authors have done a great job as this book is flows smoothly and logically and is accessible to the general history buff.
Good for Most.......2007-01-12
It was no big surprise to read about Santa Anna's negative effects on Mexico. Once you get through the first part of the book you'll have an easier time turning the pages.
Even for a native Texan, the book was definitely not what you'd expect of Travis if you've watched too many Alamo movies. If you're from South Texas you'll probably be surprised when you get near the end of the book.
The story of the battle and politicians of the time was quite interesting and kept my interest more than most parts. It's worth reading, but make sure to visit the Texan Cultures Institute too.
Good history.......2005-09-30
I was assigned to read this in a Texas history class at UT Arlington. So I expected it to be the typical politically correct, leftist, white-bashing I'd grown so accustomed to. I was pleasantly surprised. This book is honest and fair with all sides. It's what historians should strive for because it doesn't take sides. Roberts goes after truth, no matter who gets offended. And yes, sometimes that's the Mexicans. I was shocked to learn all about how Col. Travis abandoned his family, but I was impressed by his courage to the end. Now I feel certain that Santa Ana is the worst thing that ever happened to Mexico. And some of his generals were skilful enough to have won the war and honorable enough to have not executed Texas POWs. I highly recommend the book for anyone who wants to understand this major piece of American history.
Nice broad perspective.......2004-06-08
Just because this book does not agree 100% with Jeff Long is no reason to condemn it. A topic like the Alamo is supposed to include room for debate and disagreement. Although the book may have been written partly in response to Long's version of the Alamo, I feel it also serves as a viable alternative to the current dominant historiography on the Alamo (Hardin and Huffines are good, but they would agree, I think, that theirs is not the "last word"). This is a balanced account which, as other reviewers have noted, includes a complete post-1836 history of the Alamo. A good example of the common-sense historical honesty in this book comes in part of the authors' treatment of the Crockett debate: "...what had been the end of Davy Crockett?...Scores of people had an answer to the question, but their answers banged against one another, knocking silly any hope of discovering the truth."(p.196) There will never be a "last word" on the Alamo, but I do recommend this book to those interested in the topic.
Spreading the Myth.......2004-04-20
Do not be fooled by what this book aspires to be. The authors claim this is an even-handed, accurate retelling of the Battle of the Alamo and the Texas Revolution, but it adds nothing new to the oversimplified accounts you'd find in a 4th grade Texas history book.
The book tries still portrays the Alamo defenders as flawless men of great honor... mythical heroes fighting for a just cause. They try to argue that the Texas Revolution was similar to the American Revolution. They could not be further from the truth; The two events had little in common. The Texas Revolution consisted of a group of opportunistic American settlers who took advantage of the internal turmoils in Mexico at the time to seize a piece of property they had long set their eyes on. It was a prime example of Manifest Destiny at it's most voracious, if you'd like to put a label on it.
The Mexican side of the story gets lost in this book, despite the authors' claim at being unbiased. If you'd like to read an informative book on the subject, pick up Jeff Long's "Duel of the Eagles". That book is indeed an eye-opener (at least for the open-minded). On the other hand, this book might as well had been written by the Daughters of the Texas Revolution for distribution at the Alamo gift shop! It's a badly written history book.

Book Description
Although many novels and works of history have been published on the calamity that was the First World War, no work until this one has sought to unify current historical and literary interpretations of the 1914-1918 era and its implications of modern life. The essays collected here chart the war and its cultural and literary contours from a variety of new and challenging intellectual vantage points.
Focusing in different essays on America, France, Britain, and Germany, the contributors to this book contest the long-accepted notion about World War I as the crucible of modern life. Instead, their interrogations of the trench experience, home-front conditions, forms of mass culture, and literary genres reveal that the war was as much a moment of cultural opportunity as it was the point of origin for modern society or its cultural forms.
Showing how prudery and decency became patriotic imperatives after 1914, for example, they explore how the war time experience allowed for a cultural "crackdown" on decadence and sexuality that had been a conservative cry long before the way but became a matter of state police only with the star of hostilities. In similarly revisionist interpretations of politics, literature, morality, and post-war efforts to memorialize the war time experience, the contributors collapse the long-held notion of the war as a cataclysmic break with the epoch that proceeded it. What they show instead is that the mass culture of the pre-war era produced and defined the war, just as the warring states used the forces of mass culture to keep the fighting going, to sustain society behind the lines, and ultimately to construct meaning and historical memory out of a thing we still call the "Great War."

Necessary evil ; where's the beef ?.......1999-02-19
Actually, it gives a good command line point of view for its step by step instruction, but lacks instruction in Arctools GUI. A Pot of coffee is required. If you download the datasets from the CD and it don't work, uncheck the read-only properties of the downloaded files and folders
Don't try to learn ArcInfo without it!.......1999-01-30
Let's face it, ArcInfo is not the easiest program to learn or use so a book like this is required. I wouldn't exactly call it "fun reading" but it is informational and I came away feeling much better about diving in.

Book Description
In 1998, Frank Schaeffer was a successful novelist living in “Volvo-driving, higher-education worshipping” Massachusetts with two children graduated from top universities. Then his youngest child, straight out of high school, joined the U.S. Marine Corps. Written in alternating voices by eighteen-year-old John and his father, Frank, Keeping Faith takes readers in riveting fashion through a family’s experience of the U.S. Marine Corps. From being broken down and built back up on Parris Island (and being the parent of a child undergoing that experience), to the growth of both father and son and their separate reevaluations of what it means to serve. From Frank’s realization that among his fellow soccer dads “the very words ‘boot camp’ were pejorative, conjuring up ‘troubled youths at risk’ “ to John’s learning that “the Marine next to you is more important than you are,” Keeping Faith is a fascinating and personal reconsideration of issues of class, duty, and patriotism. But as John and his fellow recruits battle to make the cut—and John’s family struggles to deal with the worry and separation, it is also an extremely timely, moving, and wonderfully written human interest story—a moving chronicle of love, duty and patriotism in contemporary America. “Beautifully written ... great insight and unselfconscious humor.”—Publishers Weekly
Customer Reviews:
Good insight.......2007-04-10
My son joine the USMC early this year and recently graduated. My father was in the USMC as was my brothers and myself! We use to live at Parris Island, SC and I grew up seeing recruit training not only experiencing it. I would recommend this book if you or someone you know is either considering joining or has a son or daughter thinking about it. It does not 'candy coat' the experience. The vendor I purchased it from was quick and very courteous. It arrived in excellent condition and I'll order through them again! [...]
Story cold be lighter - way too many details.......2007-02-16
I had heard Mr. Schaeffer speak about his book and was anxious to get it for my husband. I am trying to read it now but it just keeps dragging on. He is a much better conversationalist. I am only one-third of the way through and I find myself having a hard time picking it up to finish. Maybe you need to be a military man to enjoy it. Yet again, his interview about the book was terrific!!!
Father and Son Mature Together.......2007-01-15
First, a disclaimer. I am a retired Naval officer who spent a good amount of his career working with Marine Corps enlisted men. I have an unashamed bias towards the Corps.
This book works at several levels. It shows the growth of a unruly but very bright young man and how he reacts to and comes to understand the hard discipline of an elite combat organization.
The father, a country club liberal, is consoled by his social circle when the son joins the Marines (as an enlisted man, yet) while their children go off to Ivy League schools. The father comes to accept his son's decision, then becomes proud of the choice and what it has led to.
It draws a stark picture of how discipline is instilled in a group of young men and women being trained for the most bitter kind of combat. And it shows the loyalty they develop for the Corps and importantly, towards their fellow Marines. The latter part of the book has several poignant scenes -- aspiring Marines helping a physically weak but dedicated young Puerto Rican boy through the trials of the final week of testing. He had the right stuff, he was one of them and they made sure he succeeded. It shows the tenderness they exhibited to a young, pregnant, unmarried female Marine after she and her boyfriend are separated during training.
Whatever one's feeling towards the military, this shows how pride and discipline are developed and how important they are for a military force.
Outstanding book for today's turbulent world.......2006-07-31
The Schaeffer's (John and Frank) have created an outstanding down-to-earth masterpiece memoir in today's glut of oversensationalized and gaudy celebrity biographies. Reading how both father and son communicated and felt during the trials and tribulations of USMC boot camp and beyond, I felt drawn back to the experiences of my past, similar yet different.
Most parents would not completely agree with their child's decision to join the armed forces - however, a few choose to respect and honor those wishes, however they might personally feel. Worth the price and time to read.
An Excellent book on many levels.......2006-06-21
Schaeffer's book is so good on so many levels. It has left me thinking about his family and all Marines like I never have before. This book will touch you if you have a child going to the military, already left for the military, or just if you have a child leaving home. It is, at it's core, a father-son love story. But the author makes so many discoveries about himself and about America during his experience. He realizes what a great country America is and that one of the main reasons is that our sons and daughters have been willing to fight to maintain our freedoms. He also learns how many Americans, especially the liberal tree-hugging, Volvo driving, East Coast hippies view him and his son after learning that he's going to the Marines rather than an elite institution of higher education. What his son does learn from the Marines is much more valuable than anything taught within the Ivy League.

Book Description
This is the first comprehensive and balanced history of a major Muslim rebellion in northwest China in the late nineteenth century, which led to the establishment of an independent Islamic state under Ya'qub Beg. That independence was lost in 1877, when the Qing army recaptured the region and incorporated it into the Chinese state, where it remains, somewhat uneasily, as the large Xinjiang-Uyghur Autonomous Region.
This is the first English-language history of the rebellion since 1878, and the only one to be based on a primary sources in Islamic languages as well as Chinese, complemented by British and Ottoman archival documents and secondary sources in Russian, English, Japanese, Chinese, French, German, and Turkish.
Customer Reviews:
Filling a gap.......2007-03-22
The level of attention typically granted to the Xinjiang region by the Westerners can be epitomized by its coverage in one of the best atlases that I own (Rand McNally Atlas of the World, Masterpiece Edition, 1994, ISBN 0-528-83715-X). While covering pretty much the entire populated Earth surface with 1:3,000,000 or 1:6,000:000 scale maps, the atlas simply has a gap between Gansu and Kazakhstan. Our history books are often not much better than our atlases in treating this region - even though someday we may suddenly realize its importance.
Kim Hodong's book makes a good big step toward filling this gap of coverage of the region's history. After providing a good background on the relations of the region with the Chinese imperial power, the Kokand (Khoqand) Khanate, and the Dzungars (Mongols) over a century or two, it gives a detailed account over an important and tragic period in its history, the many-sided war between the Qing givernment, the Dugans (Muslim Chinese), and Yaqub's Beg Turkic (Uyghur) state of Yettishahr throughout 1864-1877. Drawing heaviliy both on Muslim sources (in Uyghur Turkic, Persian, Arabic? the author does not always state) and on the sources from the Chinese side and from the conflict's witnesses everywhere else (Russians, British, Ottomans), the book provides a well researched and balanced coverage that is likely unparalleled in English-language literature (or, probably, anywhere else).
One should note that despite the title, the book concentrates mostly on the events in Xinjiang, mentioning the parallel Muslim rebellion in Gansu/Shaanxi/Ningxia or Yunnan only to the extent it is needed for the account. Jonathan N. Lipman's "Familiar Strangers" would probably a good companion book for someone interested in the events there.
The book also does not go into the rather interesting details of the Russian occupation of Kuldzha (the Ili River Basin) in 1871-1881, but again this is covered in a number of other books, some in English.
Overall, Kim's work offers an indispensable source for anyone interested in the subject.

Book Description
Quotes from the book "Much of the social history of the Western world, over the past three decades, has been a history of replacing what worked with what sounded good. In area after areacrime, education, housing, race relationsthe situation has gotten worse after the bright new theories were put into operation. The amazing thing is that this history of failure and disaster has neither discouraged the social engineers nor discredited them." "Some things must be done on faith, but the most dangerous kind of faith is that which masquerades as 'science.' As the pretense of science has replaced commonsense experience, we have abandoned many old-fashioned practices that worked in favor of high-sounding innovations that have led to disaster." "The assumption that spending more of the taxpayers' money will make things better has survived all kinds of evidence that it has made things worse. The black familywhich survived slavery, discrimination, poverty, wars, and depressionsbegan to come apart as the federal government moved in with its well-financed programs to 'help.'" "Worst of all, guilt has so furtively stolen into many hearts and minds that people feel apologetic about being civilized, educated, and productive when others are barbaric, uneducated, and parasitic. When civilization apologizes to barbarism, something has gone very wrong at a very fundamental level."

Home Run!.......2007-02-22
Thomas Sowell hits it out of the park on this one. He's thought provoking, succinct, and ideologically on the button. This is a series of 2-3 page writings on a variety of topics that we all think about, but can never articulate in the fresh and clear way that Thomas Sowell does. He just makes sense, period.
Wonder why conservatives and liverals see things differently?.......2007-02-19
I'm a conservative and I have good friends and family memebers who are liberals. The conservatives and liberals I know are all intelligent and concerned people. I could never figure out why there were such differing views on so many topics.
This book nails it. It is from a conservative view, but will be enlightening to all. One of my favorites.
Timeless essays by the incomparable Doctor Sowell.......1998-02-26
A must for anyone who follows the brilliant Dr. Sowell, this book collects a series of his essays and thoughts on politics, race, and common sense. As a special treat he has a section of quotes at the end with gems like "To me, the fact that I have never killed an editor is proof enough that the death penalty deters" and "There are only two types of food- Southern fried chicken and everything else". A reader would be hard pressed to ask for more.

Book Description
Humans are terrestrial animals, and our capacity to see and understand the importance and vulnerability of life in the sea has trailed our growing ability to harm it. While conservation biologists are working to address environmental problems humans have created on land, loss of marine biodiversity, including extinctions and habitat degradation, has received much less attention. At the same time, marine sciences such as oceanography and fisheries biology have largely ignored issues of conservation.
Marine Conservation Biology brings together for the first time in a single volume leading experts from around the world to apply the lessons and thinking of conservation biology to marine issues. Contributors including James M. Acheson, Louis W. Botsford, James T. Carlton, Kristina Gjerde, Selina S. Heppell, Ransom A. Myers, Julia K. Parrish, Stephen R. Palumbi, and Daniel Pauly offer penetrating insights on the nature of marine biodiversity, what threatens it, and what humans can and must do to recover the biological integrity of the world's estuaries, coastal seas, and oceans.
Sections examine: distinctive aspects of marine populations and ecosystems; threats to marine biological diversity, singly and in combination; place-based management of marine ecosystems; the often-neglected human dimensions of marine conservation.
Marine Conservation Biology breaks new ground by creating the conceptual framework for the new field of marine conservation biology -- the science of protecting, recovering, and sustainably using the living sea. It synthesizes the latest knowledge and ideas from leading thinkers in disciplines ranging from larval biology to sociology, making it a must-read for research and teaching faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate and advanced undergraduate students.
