A compelling story.......2003-07-06
This is a compelling story. Judge H. C. McComas and his wife, Juniata, were brutally murdered by a band of Chiricachua Apaches while traveling on the road from Silver City to Lordsburg, New Mexico, on March 28, 1883. Their six-year-old son Charley, traveling with them, was carried away by the Indians and never found, despite long and determined efforts to learn of his whereabouts. For many years, the McComas story remained an obscure footnote to the long history of the Apache Wars in the Southwest. Simmons has rescued it from its obscurity in this fine book.
The detail that Simmons brings to the McComas story is remarkable, considering the difficulties he must have encountered in his research. He has, I think, considered the story from every possible angle, speculating where the facts are not definitely known (many are not), but laying his speculations on a firm foundation of facts. The story is, of course, incredibly sad, and the Chiricahuas do not come off well in the telling. But the book is far from an anti-Indian screed. Simmons is sensitive to the Indians' cultural milieu and lifestyle, even if they are not in all respects admirable. The book ends with a description of the 1994 funeral of the celebrated Apache sculptor Allan Houser. Houser's Chiricahua father, Sam Haozous, was ten-years-old and an apprentice warrior when he rode with the Indians who attacked the McComas family in 1883. For many years, he and his son carefully guarded the dark secret of his youthful involvement in the atrocity. But Allan Houser related his father's recollections of the incident to Simmons not long before his death. Simmons came to Houser's funeral with an appreciation of the sculptor's artistic accomplishments and a sensitivity to the Chiricahua legacy that he represented.
Highly recommended!

Book Description
In a work that surveys an entire tradition of historical thought and writing across a span of eight-hundred years, Tarif Khalidi examines how Arabic-Islamic culture of the premodern period viewed the past, how it recorded it, and how it sought to answer the many complex questions associated with the discipline of history.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting Argument Well Presented.......2000-09-09
Khalidi's thesis is that 4 approaches dominated classical Arabic historiography. In chronological order, they are hadith, adab, hikma and siyasa. The hadith approach focused on judging the authenticity of historical reports by examining the chain of transmission. Adab is often translated as "belles-lettres". This approach focused on the moral and intellectual lessons taught by history. Hikma refers to the secular sciences which inspired a more all encompassing historiographic approach. Finally, siyasa, the science of good government, led to comprehensive histories often designed for bureaucrats.
Khalidi includes many excerpts from the historians he discusses. Since so many of the historians are not well known in the West, this is a useful feature. Whether or not you agree with Khalidi's categorization, this book will teach you a lot about Arabic historiography.

Book Description
Explores the heart of pattern recognition concepts, methods and applications using statistical, syntactic and neural approaches. Divided into four sections, it clearly demonstrates the similarities and differences among the three approaches. The second part deals with the statistical pattern recognition approach, starting with a simple example and finishing with unsupervised learning through clustering. Section three discusses the syntactic approach and explores such topics as the capabilities of string grammars and parsing; higher dimensional representations and graphical approaches. Part four presents an excellent overview of the emerging neural approach including an examination of pattern associations and feedforward nets. Along with examples, each chapter provides the reader with pertinent literature for a more in-depth study of specific topics.

Really bad.......2005-03-04
Whats the point writing a book when no one can understand what is written in it. There is nothing in this book, absolutely nothing. Most of the pages, he is just beating around the bush, talking about irrelevant stuff. There is no depth at all. I really can't think of any Pro's except maybe the print quality.
Press `Back' and try another title.......2000-05-06
The world of pattern recognition has a nice theoretical background and this guy just ignores it, thus it's hard to read and understand something from it; you may try reading a more complicated subject from a more complicated book (e.g. read probability from Kallenberg's monograph) and expect to understand more things on the world we live on. Additionally, the notation is awful, maybe it's the reason that he seems to have used TeX (which makes up the star), but worse than a novice math author; my own assignment reports have better notation, and are more rigorously written but I don't want people to waste paper and spend energy on marketing this thing.
If you're a student, REALLY think of spending $100 on more useful things.

Kids With Courage: True Stories About Young People Making a Difference
ASIN: 1591022800 |
Book Description
Magical heroes like Harry Potter, Spiderman, or Catwoman provide plenty of entertainment for kids, but in real life heroes are made of sterner stuff than celluloid fantasies. In this inspiring collection of biographies, critically acclaimed writer and psychologist Sandra McLeod Humphrey teaches young people that heroes were once ordinary people whose strength of character helped them to achieve extraordinary things. Starting with only their dreams, they worked hard and overcame obstacles to make their dreams come true. Some overcame physical handicaps, others psychological barriers like extreme shyness or feelings of inferiority; some faced racial discrimination or educational disadvantage, others financial burdens. In spite of these frustrations and discouragements, all of these people discovered in themselves the patience, perseverance, and determination to pursue their dreams beyond every obstacle. The message is clear: No matter who you are or where you come from, you too can accomplish extraordinary things, as long as you dare to dream and never, never, never give up!
Customer Reviews:
Great for youngsters and those who look for inspiration but with short concentration span.......2007-06-12
If I were a teacher, I would definitely make this a required reading for all my students. It's short with only four pages for each character. However, the "As a boy" + "As a man" and "As a girl" + "As a woman" format, the smart pick of heroes/heroines and the excellent story writing skill of the author, well distinguished it from other biographies of the same high inspirational value and make it particularly suitable for children and people with short concentration span. Educational and interesting by all means. Highly recommended!
DARE TO DREAM - A Classroom Treasury.......2005-11-01
Dare to Dream: 25 extraordinary lives by Sandra McLeod Humphrey is so needed by our society, where violent solutions to conflict and demands for instant results are all too common.
Because a wide range of personalities is featured, each reader will identify with some of the characters. The individuals, each described as a young person and then as an adult, include: Nellie Bly, who used journalism as a tool for social justice; Jim Thorpe, a Native American who endured physical and emotional hardship and was known as "The World's Greatest Athlete"; Gloria Estefan who found emotional escape in music and became a successful performer as well as an advocate for abused children; Ben Carson who was ridiculed for failing grades, changed his learning habits, and became the director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins.
How refreshing to find a source of inspiration which is so accessible to young people. Teachers will welcome this book, with its readable chapters which are brief enough to be included within class periods. Dare to Dream comes at a time when we need real heroes and reasons for hope.
Should Be Recommend Reading.......2005-08-08
If I had been given a history book written by Humphrey, I would've fell in love with History! She writes in a way that makes historical figures seem interesting, lively, and important. Not only does she include many personal attributes with each profile, but she explains why these people made significant contributions to history (past and present)!
Inspire Your Dreamer.......2005-06-21
This collection of twenty-five short biographies introduces us to heroes in all avenues of achievement: invention, medicine, arts, science, education, sports. Each story is a testament to perseverence and self-determination. Whatever a child's dream (science, education, sports, invention, performing arts), there is a hero AND heroine who made their dream come true. The collection ran the gamut of great achievers. Some I knew about, others were new. The stories were too short for my taste. Although balanced in numbers, some of the selections puzzle me. For example, why Sammy Sosa and not Roberto Clemente? The stories have enough information to potentially inspire a child to research and learn more about a person of interest. Great balance of men and women for all fields of achievement.
The mini-biographies were choppy at times. The collection may be too heavy with sports figures (24% are athletes, all but one male), including Michael Jordan, who left school early to go pro? The biographies celebrate personal triumphs, despite others' judgments and roadblocks. A great book for talking about being true to one's self!
Teach Children How to Lead Exemplary Lives.......2005-06-13
In today's fast-paced, media-driven world, we have plenty of celebrities, but few heroes. While celebrities are famous (in many cases, for questionable behavior), heroes are esteemed for character, courage and achievement. In other words, a celebrity does not a hero make.
As parents, how do we teach our children to see the difference? How do we teach them that the actress who gets attention for taking off her clothes or the athlete who gets media coverage for punching a fan are merely celebrities, not heroes?
Sandra McLeod Humphrey's latest book, "Dare to Dream! 25 Extraordinary Lives" provides a solution to our dilemma. Humphrey, a retired psychologist and author of the series of "What Do You Do?" books (which foster moral development in children), has done it again with her latest book. "Dare to Dream!" reveals the struggles of real-life heroes and how tough choices led to development of character, moral fiber and social change. Reading about how these people led their lives will give your children role models after which to pattern their behavior.
"Dare to Dream!" has something for every child. Sandra McLeod Humphrey has carefully selected heroes from every ethnicity and walk of life, from sports to science, from music to poetry. Humphrey chronicles hero development during each person's life, from child to adult, so kids can begin to see how choices shape a life. Included in the book are current heroines (like Maya Angelou) and historic heroes (like Abe Lincoln). Although the characterizations are information-rich, they are brief-most are no more than two or three pages-which makes the book a great summer read. While reading the engaging stories from "Dare to Dream!" your children will be sharpening their literary skills and learning how to rise above time, place and circumstance to become heroes of their own lives.

Book Description
The determination with which the Confederate garrison of Port Hudson, Louisiana, held out--for seven weeks, fewer than 5,000 Confederate troops fended off almost 30,000 Yankees--makes it one of the most interesting campaigns of the Civil War. It was, in fact, the longest siege in U.S. military history. Edward Cunningham tells for the first time the complete story of the Union operation against this Confederate stronghold on the Lower Mississippi.
Customer Reviews:
Vicksburg having fallen.......2007-05-04
Vicksburg having fallen, Port Hudson surrendered. A line like this exists in every history of the Civil War, the Vicksburg Campaign or history of the Western Theater. You read it, understand the Mississippi River is open to Northern traffic and continue reading. This is the extant of Port Hudson's history and covers most of the current interest in this campaign. Edward Cunningham wrote this for his Master's under the direction of T. Harry Williams. This was first published in 1963 and is the only Cunningham book published during his lifetime. Having read his book on Shiloh, I wanted to read this too.
They are two different books. Not only in subject but also in writing style and publishing house. While the Shiloh book is superior, this is not a bad book and well worth reading. In common with all books on obscure campaigns and battle, the reader is unfamiliar with many of the people and unsure of the landscape. The book does a good job introducing the major participants and tries to describe the landscape. The general lack of detailed maps hampers and in time, defeats all attempts to describe the landscape. This becomes a major distraction and detracts from what is a fine detailed description of the campaign.
The Port Hudson Campaign is one of Union mismanagement as N. P. Banks blunders his way through the siege. This is a bloody campaign consisting of two major attacks and days of digging and sniping. The author does an excellent job of describing these actions and the mechanics of siege warfare. Being a port, the Navy plays a significant role in the campaign and we gain a good understanding of the abilities and limits of ships.
This is not an easy or a fun read. However, it is a good detailed history of a bloody and forgotten campaign. It is worth the time and money to gain an understanding of what the Civil War was like outside of the major armies.
Nice Introduction to the Siege of Port Hudson.......2005-11-08
Anyone who has a decent understanding of the war knows about the Vicksburg Campaign. However, not as many know about a simultaneous Siege happening to the south in Louisiana at Port Hudson. General Nathaniel Banks and his Army of the Gulf (XIX Corps) besieged 6,000-odd men under Confederate Major General Franklin Gardner from May 23-July 9, 1863. After these 48 days, the Confederates surrendered, not because they were defeated, but because Vicksburg had fallen and they now had no hope of a rescue. Cunningham's book is a good introduction to this topic except for one important detail: maps. There are only two maps. One shows the larger area of operations along the Mississippi River from Cairo, IL to New Orleans. The other shows the siege lines in such a zoomed out map that I had trouble reading everything. This makes for a difficult time while following along. I pulled out my Official Records Atlas several times during my reading. The Order of Battle is slightly above average, with no strengths but with regimental commanders listed. Cunningham has adequate notes and a solid bibliography. The book was originally published in 1963, so that might explain the lack of maps. I enjoyed Cunningham's delivery. It was smooth and kept me interested throughout. However, he tended to make some grandiose claims from time to time regarding the ability of the Confederates to break the Siege. If you read it, you'll know what I'm talking about. This is a solid introduction to the Campaign, but it is by no means definitive. I would recommend the two-volume The Guns of Port Hudson by David C. Edmonds for that label. The books are not cheap and they're difficult to find, but judging by the second volume (which I own), they are worth it.

The Port Hudson Campaign, 1862-1863.......2000-05-05
The siege of Port Hudson, a Confederate stronghold on the Mississippi River a few hundred miles downriver from Vicksburg, is the longest siege in American history. Although often overshadowed by the story of Vicksburg, the author of "The Port Hudson Campaign, 1862-1863" tells the story of Port Hudson in such intresting detail that it parallels the Vicksburg siege. He vividly describes the two fatal major assaults of May 27 and June 14 by the Federals to storm the Confererate fortress. Both assaults, poorly planned and executed by the Federal generals, resulted in a large number of Federal casualties with only minor losses to the Confederates. The author also reveals a threat of mutiny by a number of the Federal troops against their generals near the end of the siege. Although the Confederates surrendered Port Hudson upon learning that Vicksburg had fallen, the author suggests that in terms of casualties, the Confederates won, "Union combat losses ran around 5,000 as against about 700 Confederates". The only negative comment about this book is that on occassion it is difficult to follow the flow of battle action due to the long listing of regements and companys on both sides involved in the action. This, however, does not prevent the reader from enjoying the book. Overall, a well written book on Civil War action and a must have book to complete any Civil War history library.

Selected Guidelines for Ethnobotanical Research: A Field Manual (Advances in Economic Botany Vol. 10)
ASIN: 1844070840 |
Book Description
* The basic text and manual for this rapidly developing subject
* Provides a detailed overview, explaining in a non-technical style the concepts, methods, and skills used
* Re-issued to meet demand, in the "People and Plants Conservation Series"
Ethnobotany is the study of the classification, use and management of plants by people. It draws on a range of disciplines, including natural and social sciences, to show how conservation of plants and of local knowledge about them can be achieved. Ethnobotany is critical to the growing importance of developing new crops and products such as drugs from traditional plants.
This book is the basic introduction to the field, showing how botany, anthropology, ecology, economics, and linguistics are all employed in the techniques and methods involved. It begins by explaining data collection and hypothesis testing and ends with practical ideas on fieldwork ethics and the application of results to conservation and community development. Case studies illustrate the explanations, demonstrating the importance of collaboration in achieving results.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent!!.......2007-01-07
Excellent book, great bridge in the gap in the relevant literature. If you are a budding botanist, it is a must read, very comprehensive and a must-have in order to gather information and follow the scientific method
good if you can get it.......2004-05-14
This is a good book. I've seen the new edition, which is really just a reprint, with no updating that I could notice -- the computer analysis applications could have used an update, as technology has advanced in the years since its original publication. If you liked the original, you'll like this one.
It's an excellent manual that should be read by anyone planning to go in the field.
I intended to use this book for a class starting in Feb 2004, and since the release date was supposedly late 03 or Jan 04, I felt confident in ordering it. No such luck. It never did arrive, and the distributor was quite unapologetic about not even being able to track where the books were or when they might get to the US (it's a British publishing house). They even told me that I should have known better than to plan on it being out when they said that it would!!
But that's not Gary Martin's fault, and I suppose it's a testament to how popular the book is. Too bad we did not get to use it.
An excellent text for an ethnobotany field methods course........1999-02-25
This book is one of the very few that is perfect for teaching a college level ethnobotany field methods class. It covers the how-tos of data collection, hypothesis testing, plant identification and collection for both general purposes and for phytochemical analysis. The book also includes sections on anthropological, ecological, economic, linguistic, conservation, and community development skills and knowledge necessary to going into the field to do ethnobotanical research.
Class curriculum can be easily organized around the information provided in Martin's book. The only drawback to this book is the fact that it sold out very quickly in its first edition and the first reprint, both in 1995, so at the moment its back ordered waiting on the next reprinting.
