Customer Reviews:
Great Book!.......2007-08-07
This is a book no household should be without. Very informative and helpfull. The index is great and the information is to the point... Excellent photos and drawings. Only drawback: a bit bulky!
Mayo Clinic - Family Health Book.......2006-08-07
The Mayo Family Health book is a "wealth of information."
My husband recently became ill and was hospitalized. We were able to pinpoint symptoms in the book which helped us along with our health provider get appropriate testing and treatment for his condition.
With healthcare today, we must be "informed consumers".
I have worked nearly 35 years in clinical laboratory medicine and I still learn something new everyday....this book certainly helps.
A book I very much want to get .......2006-03-20
I like the format of this book. The six sections seem designed to truly make the work user friendly.
They are:
Part I: Living Well II: Common Conditions and Concerns Through Life's Stages III: Making Sense of Your Symptoms
IV: First Aid and Emergency Care VisualGuide: Anatomy and Common Disorders Part V: Diseases and Disorders
VI: Tests and Treatments
The great prayer is that most of what one learns from reading and going through this guide will not have to be useful or relevant.
This is One of the Three books you Need to Have.......2005-12-23
This is an excellent resource book that covers a large majority of health conditions and treatments. It give a thorough explanation of Symptoms, First Aid, Diseases and Disorders, Tests and Treatments. What is especially nice are the chapters on common conditions based on your age group and how to Live Well. The information is covered thoroughly with illustrations and diagrams. There is a full-color photograph and illustrations section in the book called the Visual Guide. This section is helpful when trying to identify things like rashes and skin disorders and for reviewing anatomy.
The other two books you should possess for starting your medical/health library should include a good drug/medication book (or use a website like www.medlineplus.gov) and a good medical dictionary (recommend Taber's, but MedlinePlus also has an encyclopedia/dictionary).
Mayo Clinic Family Health Book, Third Edition.......2005-09-21
I was needing an up-to-date health book and I am well pleased with my choice. The book arrived in very good condition and is everything I needed.
Thank you.

Book Description
Louisbourg represented a major threat to Anglo-American plans to invade Canada. Bypassing it would leave an immensely powerful enemy base astride the Anglo-American lines of communication – Louisbourg had to be taken. Faced with strong beach defences and rough weather, it took six days to land the troops, and it was only due to a stroke of daring on the part of a young brigadier named James Wolfe, who managed to turn the French beach position, that this was achieved. The story is largely based on firsthand accounts from the journals of several participants, including French Governor Drucour's, whose excellent account has never been published.
Customer Reviews:
Chartrand's Chronicle of the French and Indian War.......2005-01-13
This book is a companion to Chartrand's excellent work, Ticonderoga 1758. Both cover the French and Indian war battles in its critical year, the year the British took the initiative.
This book comprises of the background of what was to be Britian's main effort in the Seven Year's War, the seige and subjugation of the fortress Louisbourg. It stood as a bulwark to any British advance to Quebec itself, and it's subjugation was long and hard as a seige could be. This book covers the seige itself day by day as it lasted for at least a month, with each passing day worsening the situation for the desperate French.
Regardless of the British victory, the French inflicted more losses on its foe outnumbering them by many times in part due to simple bravery and resiliance, even if they weren't as professional as the British (evidenced by their very lackluster breakout attempts from the city walls). All in all, a very good by for anybody intrested in the French and Indian war, or a very interesting battle in general. Great maps like any good Osprey, excellent illustrations by artist Patrice Courcelle, and a non-biased and interesting account place this amongst the best of Osprey's.
A Good, Concise Account of a Famous Siege.......2001-03-08
Rene Chartrand has added a volume on the British siege and capture of Fortress Louisbourg in 1758 to complement his earlier volume on the Battle of Ticonderoga. Together, these two Osprey titles add a wealth of new information and perspectives on these critical campaigns of the French and Indian War.
In Louisbourg 1758, Chartrand provides ample details from both the French and British sides, using several previously un-tapped sources. The result is a thorough account of a very professionally-conducted siege. A complete order of battle, including both ground and naval units, is provided. There is also information on the partisan warfare conducted by the displaced Acadians. Information on casualties on both sides is also provided.
The maps and artwork are excellent, although one minor exception is a map that clearly denotes all the major features within Fortress Louisbourg, such as the gates and bastions. The panoramic photos of the reconstructed Fort Louisbourg are excellent and add great value to this volume.
Chartrand focuses heavily on Brigadier General James Wolfe, perhaps somewhat slighting the other British brigadiers, but this is probably necessary due to the restricted size of the volume. All in all, this volume is a welcome addition for anyone interested in Eighteength Century Siege Warfare or the French and Indian War.
An Insightful, Concise, History of The 1758 Siege.......2001-02-08
This book follows the Osprey Campaign series format. The 96 page book includes plenty of color & b/w photos, maps, diagrams, portraits of key leaders, and both 18th century and modern sketches of soldiers of various French & English units. There is a detailed order of battle of both land and sea units, plus some very nice 3 dimensional maps of the terrain. Particularly enjoyable were the modern recreations of several events by illustrator Patrice Courcelle.
For those unfamiliar with the Osprey Campaign books, the contents include sections dealing with the origins of the campaign, opposing plans, opposing commanders, opposing armies, the camaign, the siege day by day, the aftermath, and the site today. An index, chronology and suggested further reading, are also included.
Rene Chartrand does an excellent job of telling the story in an even-handed way so the reader can appreciate the strengths and weaknesses of both sides of the conflict. There are some very insightful comments and interesting ancedotes on leaders, troops and the times. The book is very readable.
Louisbourg is a National Park which includes an extensive, although not complete, recreation of the famous fortress-city. For those who can not visit, for reenactors, wargamers, and those interested in the F&I War this would be an good book to have.
The drawbacks are few. Namely the 3-dimensional maps might have been "zoomed-in", some photos of the park could have been of higher quality, and more tourist information should have been given. In spite of these minor shortcomings, LOUISBOURG 1758: WOLFE'S FIRST SIEGE is highly recommended.

Book Description
Businesses that produce bioscience products—gene tests and therapies, pharmaceuticals, vaccines, and medical devices—are regularly confronted with ethical issues concerning these technologies. Conflicts exist between those who support advancements in bioscience and those who fear the consequences of unfettered scientific license. As the debate surrounding bioscience grows, it will be increasingly important for business managers to consider the larger consequences of their work.
This groundbreaking book follows industry research, development, and marketing of medical and bioscience products across a variety of fields, including biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and bio-agriculture. Compelling and current case studies highlight the ethical decisions business managers frequently face. With the increasing visibility and public expectation placed on businesses in this sector, managers need to understand the ethical and social issues. This book addresses that need and provides a framework for incorporating ethical analysis in business decision making.

Hitler Youth -Truth.......2007-09-23
This book makes it clear under what pressures kids and teens grew up in the thirties and forties in Germany. The writer shows the big riff between the older and younger generations in Germany during the Hitler era. It is personal and detailed. It reaffirms many of the stories I heve heard from my parents and grandparents. A must read for every interested in keeping peace alive.
a child's perspective.......2007-07-07
this is a very well-written book. The lifeline flows in order which makes it easy for the reader to keep track of events as they occurred. This provides a very different perspective because it is from that as a child growing up on 'Hilter's mountain', as well as that of a German citizen. This provides a very good inside look at what life was like in these most terrible of times.
Answers a lot of questions.......2006-09-13
I lived in Germany in the late 1970s with a family who would have been young people during the War. I was vastly curious about their experience as "average Germans" but they were evasive and would say very little. Irmgard Hunt, who grew up just 30 miles from my foreign exchange mother during roughly the same years, gives us a portrait of what it was like for the average German citizen. Relying on her mother's diary, and interviews with family and friends, it may be some fiction, as an earlier reviewer states, but it rings true to me. You'll enjoy this book more if you know some German.
Great Story.......2006-01-20
Excellent story of WW2 from the perspective of an ordinary little girl. I loved this story because it was a whole new look at this era of world history, a view not often captured. A must read for any enthusiast of the era.
Child's view of Nazi Germany.......2005-12-13
This proves to be an interesting and somewhat insightful look from the perception of child. Irmgard Hunt spent her first 11 years of her life living in Berchtesgaden, under the shadow of Hitler's mountain retreat. She even had a honor of being on Hitler's lap and her parents must have been die-hard Nazis themselves to be allowed to live in that Bavarian village so close to their Fuhrer's own mountain home.
Hunt's recollection proves to be informative on how life was for people who lived in that village where Nazism was so strong. Many of her stories actually make great deal of sense to anyone familiar with the Third Reich and it made whole lot of sense to me especially since, the author was living in Berchtesgaden.
However, I do wondered how much of the book reflects reality. After all, she was very young when all this took place, most normal people do have a hard time remembering what they did, felt or thought when they were eight, nine or ten years old. The author may remembered very few details but I doubt if she could remembered all of it without being compromised by passing years of faded memories.
I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the story of an ordinary German girl growing up in one of the most nazified villages in Germany. But I would also caution these readers that you are relying on a memory of that child who is now a grown woman and asked yourself how much of your childhood you remembered with such details.

Filling a Wide Gap in English Language Accounts of Hitler's Reich.......2007-08-31
Irmgard Hunt does us a great service in presenting, in English, her account of growing up "Nazi" under National Socialism during the 1920s and 1930s, even of sitting on Adolf's knee--until 1945 a proudly-told family story, silenced with the deafening crash of the 1000-year Reich.
I have seen such accounts in German, but this is the first I have seen written in English, not translated, and it is a good account--personal and historically interesting and accurate. Ms. Hunt strikes a nice balance between educating the reader (who may not be historically informed), and giving her personal observations and balance between emotions and attempts to understand how she was swept up in the rapid rise of Nazism and reduction of German to ashes in what really was a 12-year Reich, one of the shortest imaginable yet sweeping up a whole nation seeking stability and peace after the Versailles Treaty, hyperinflation and depression.
This account stands in stark contrast to what happened in America--yet very poignant to today's situation in which America seems to have enemies everywhere, and Americans could trade their freedoms for security and stability--something we should be warned against. Thus, this easily-read account stands as a warning to later generations--not again!
Most highly recommended!

Gates, director of the Central Intelligence Agency from 1991 to 1993, began in an entry level position and rose to the top. His insider's account of the Cold War, CIA operations and the unraveling of the Soviet Union is sprinkled with revelations including the fact that 1983 was the most dangerous year in U.S.-U.S.S.R. relations and that both the CIA and KGB sponsored countless "black operations" designed to embarrass and discredit the other side. Gates also reveals that he secretly met with KGB foreign operations chief Vladimir Kryuchkov on two separate occasions and how the CIA often acted in contempt of Congress. While none of this may come as a huge surprise, it never fails to shock when it's laid out in black and white by someone who was on the inside.
Customer Reviews:
"From the Shadows" by Robert M. Gates.......2007-10-01
Absolutely fascinating! Mr. Gates is an excellent writer and is able to make complicated information easy to follow. And what an insight he gave to the Presidents he worked for; he didn't have an axe to grind with any of them, even though they represented both political parties.
This is a book I enjoyed so completely that I hated to reach the end of it. It will be on my personal "re-read" list. No wonder Mr. Gates was selected to become Secretary of Defense in our nation's hour of need.
Engages the eyes and mind.......2006-11-17
Rarely do you run across a historical book that is so chocked full of names, dates and acronyms that engages your mind as you push to reader faster. Gates delivers great insight wrapped in words that are illustrative of the push and pull of power players - within and between government bodies - domestic and global. If you are curious about the claims of one party or the other concerning the end of the Cold War, then this book will prove to be enlightening. All contributed to the demise, but perhaps none more than the Soviets themselves. Great read. Engaging. Insightful. Illuminating. Perhaps now more than ever before this a read that helps look at the challenges we, as a global community, face today. Buy it. Read it. Gain perspective.
View from the inside.......2006-10-01
The CIA is probably the one institution that the US President controls the most; or so this book argues. Robert M. Gates spent over two decades working at the CIA, and is one of the few career officials who came in near the bottom and rose all the way to the top. This book is his memoir, and recollection of how the CIA served 5 consecutive presidents in the Cold War. Starting with Richard Nixon, and ending with the first George Bush, Gates shows how each president used, and sometimes abused, the CIA to further their policies with regard to the USSR and communist parties around the world.
The major points one gets from this book are as follows. First, Carter was no wimp with regard to the USSR. Second, the most dangerous years of the Cold War did not end with Vietnam; they included some years in the 1980's. Third, the CIA consistently disregards the laws of the US. Fourth, the CIA often gets suckered into doing thing at the whim of the president that it later regrets. Last, the first George Bush was probably one of the best diplomats the US has seen in recent times. Over all, this was a very good book and I am glad I read it.
Intense Reading - great enjoyment.......2002-09-18
Excellent account of what really goes on from the inside of the govt. They say that truth is better than fiction. This is true in a big way in this book. You will recall many of the events in not too distant history. They come alive in this book and history makes more sense. Intense reading - be sure to underline the names to keep track of the huge cast of characters. A big Aggie thumb's up for this one!
Informative but dry.......2002-07-23
Gates had access to some of the most fascinating characters in the history of the Cold War. His observations are incisive and revealing about many of these personalities; however, his book often reads like one might imagine a CIA memo reads, rather dry. The book provides feedback on several important historical instances but it does not go into much depth on any. I do not recommend it as a book used to learn the history of that era. Instead I would read it to gain a further understanding of what went on behind the scenes.
In general, I find Gates to be an interesting character himself. He has some hilarious anecdotes about life in the CIA. Such as when he is walking up the steps of Air Force One and turns to flip off several of the top officials (I think it was) in Romania after they botch his passport. In addition to a often dry sense of humor he also seems to have a great deal of character and integrity.
