Helpful for Transverse Myelitis patients.......1999-09-23
I have transverse myelitis, and am constantly searching for any published information on transverse myelitis. In my search, I included information on MS, since it is so closely related to TM. Most of the symptoms and treatments of symptoms are similar in MS and TM, and I found this book to be the most up-to-date, and a valuable reference guide to medications prescribed, how to understand why I am experiencing "sensations", and other questions that I have had. I carry this book wherever I go as a reference "manual". It is written in plain english, so it is easy to read and easy to understand.
For the newly diagnosed and those close to them.......1999-08-26
I found this book extremely helpful as I am being evaluated for MS. Part of the proceeds benefit the MS Society and the author clearly wants to present the disease as he knows it- not as some harmless diagnosis nor some mythical death sentence. Should my possible diagnosis become definitive, I plan to send this book to my family members as what I believe is an accurrate description of life with MS and what lies in store.
"Just the Facts, Mam", without Telling You How to Live-It.......1998-02-12
This book gives the newly diagnosed or the newly interested person the facts of MS. It does not attempt to make you feel good, but leaves you knowing the truth, which for many is what they want to know. It tells you the (1995) treatments (needs update in this regard as new effective treatments continue to become available), gives you accurate stats on the likelihood of progression and other facts you want to know- like genetic susceptibility; tells you the myths about treatments that an MS'r is likely to run into, like curing with diet, vitamins, minerals and other "treatments" long since proven as having no curative value. It also gives helpful symptom relief data. It's a no-nonsense but thoughtful explanation of the truth- Thomas P. Anderson, Ph.D., Psychologist w/MS 10 Yrs.

A no-nonsense book on ASVAB.......2003-09-05
There are so much that I can talk about this book, but here is the review for you and I'll try to be brief to benefit your time. The title of this book is "The Best Test Preparation for the Armed Forces Vocational Aptitude Battery," and it is not a BS promise. I got 88 on the ASVAB (I know, other reviews have higher scores), and I can, as the Sergeants in the recruiting office stated, get almost any job in the Army (probably except green beret, a Secret Service job). They were thrilled that I got a good score, and I was talking to the Sergeants as almost-equals, and I felt thrilled too! It's like The Rock in wrestling wants to be your friend! I didn't read other ASVAB books and I was good in math already, but you can be too if you read this book, even for 2 hour a day for 30 days. The reviews section is extremely helpful, and I know my weaknesses and strengths now. Thank you "The best Preparation...," Amazon.com, Sergeants in Sunnyvale recruiting office, and finally my green beret friend Derek.
A+.......2003-01-16
I bought this book 30 days prior to taking the asvab. I worked with this book 4 hrs a day until I took my asvab. I intially had a gt score of 98. I improved my score by seventeen points to a 115. This book is a very vauable resource. I can now obtain my goal of being a military officer in the Army Guard! I am very thankful and exited about my fresh start. Thank You REA!
Great Pre-Asvab prep........2002-01-17
I have a mechanical engineering degree and recently decided to join the Army. I bought this book as a review for material which I have forgotten and as a reference for things i didnt know. The book gives a good overview about the structure of the asvab and what will be covered on the exam. It contains 3 or 4 practice exams for each of the 12 sections. This book goes beyond the call of duty by not only including a key to the answers, but explaining, for each problem, why one answer is correct and the others incorrect. What I found MOST helpful is the review sections which discusses in good depth the topics for each section. for example, it discusses all of the types of hammers, screws nails rivets etc that will be discussed on the exam. I didnt do any review for the auto, shop, and biologoy sections until the night before the exam. While I would not recommend this course of action, it, in my opinion, gave me exactly what i needed to know.
If you would like to quantify, how much the book helped me, take into consideration that i scored, with the help of this book and my prio knowledege, a 99 asqt ( the highest score possible on the ASVAB) a and a 128 GT compoisite. My recruiter has never seen anyone get a perfect score before.
The Best Test Preparation for the ASVAB-Armed services........2000-05-07
I have recently decided to join the navy and I have studied for the Asvab with several other testing materials and I have found this one to be the most useful. I believe this book has closest to the actual test then any of the other books I have studied with. I would recommend this book as a study guide to any one thinking of taking the Asvab Test. With this book has your study guide you will be sure to pass the test with flying colors.

This book consists of a huge number of examples that can be programmed on a spreadsheet. It illustrates random walks, Poisson processes, the achievement of thermal equilibrium, Boltzmann processes, Galton boards -- tons of examples in a readable and interesting way.
Book Description
Longtime activist, author, and antifeminist leader Phyllis Schlafly is for many the symbol of the conservative movement in America. In this provocative new book, historian Donald T. Critchlow sheds new light on Schlafly's life and on the unappreciated role her grassroots activism played in transforming America's political landscape.
Based on exclusive and unrestricted access to Schlafly's papers as well as sixty other archival collections, the book reveals for the first time the inside story of this Missouri-born mother of six who became one of the most controversial forces in modern political history. It takes us from Schlafly's political beginnings in the Republican Right after the World War II through her years as an anticommunist crusader to her more recent efforts to thwart same-sex marriage and stem the flow of illegal immigrants.
Schlafly's political career took off after her book A Choice Not an Echo helped secure Barry Goldwater's nomination. With sales of more than 3 million copies, the book established her as a national voice within the conservative movement. But it was Schlafly's bid to defeat the Equal Rights Amendment that gained her a grassroots following. Her anti-ERA crusade attracted hundreds of thousands of women into the conservative fold and earned her a name as feminism's most ardent opponent. In the 1970s, Schlafly founded the Eagle Forum, a Washington-based conservative policy organization that today claims a membership of 50,000 women.
Filled with fresh insights into these and other initiatives, Phyllis Schlafly and Grassroots Conservatism provides a telling profile of one of the most influential activists in recent history. Sure to invite spirited debate, it casts new light on a major shift in American politics, the emergence of the Republican Right.

catering to paranoid intolerance.......2006-02-08
Ms Schlafly's world-view would be laughable if it were not so intolerant.
Phyllis Schlafly: A Catalyst in America's Shift to the Right.......2005-11-08
Donald T. Critchlow has written a timely and much needed examination of the rise of conservatism in American political culture through the life of Phyllis Schlafly. For too long Schlafly's importance has been obfuscated by historians intent on discrediting her rather than noting her importance. Critchlow fills this gap. He brings to life Schlafly's political career beginning in the anticommunist fervor of the 1950s to her role in shaping Republican defense policy during the 1970s to the fight over the ERA. He also includes an important assessment of Schlafly's present political activities.
Based on extensive archival research from various libraries and institutions, Critchlow's examination of Schlafly deserves the attention it has already received by the academic community and the press, including such publications as the New Yorker. This prestigious magazine included Phyllis Schlafly and Grassroots Conservatism as one of its fall book selections, which testifies to the book's important insights and balanced interpretation.
Big Book on a Giant Figure in American Politics.......2005-10-26
Finally, Phyllis Schlafly gets her scholarly due. While historians have focused on the periphery of politics -- dwelling into ever narrow corners and cracks of the American Left -- Phyllis Schlafly has had no honest assessment. Plenty of dishonest, superficial assessment based on hand-me-down "that terrible woman" stories, but little more. (...).
Professor Critchlow is the dean of U.S. policy historians and he has taken a brave step tackling a figure so unpopular among academics. Then again, I am reminded of that member of the chattering classes who said, "I can't believe Nixon won , I don't know a single person who voted for him!" Critchlow batters that academic insularity to explain how and why Schlafly's message spawned "grassroots conservatism." Let's hope some who would rather not hear, do listen.
The alternative offered by Critchlow's study is, to take a quote from one of her best-selling titles,
"A Choice, Not an Echo" of the silly things constantly said
about her and other movement conservatives.
Wake up historians (left or right), you have nothing to lose but your ignorance!
Jonathan Bean
Southern Illinois University
To disagree with somebody, first find out where they are coming from.......2005-10-01
Donald T. Critchlow, the ever-prolific profssor of policy studies has performed a daunting task. In this book, he wrote a critical but balanced biography of Phyllis Schlafly.
Schlafly is the female new right activist who claims sole responsibility for defeating the Equal Rights Amendment in 1982. Previous biographies about her were blatantly partisan projects because their authors either attacked or fawned over their subject. The long-time far right activist engenders strong feelings among people familiar with her work; you either love or hate her.
Phyllis Schlafly first appeared in national politics in 1964. That year, she wrote `A choice: Not an echo' which tried to explain why Goldwater was the `sensible' choice. Yet, because Johnson then-rode public sympathy over the Kennedy assassination, he won a landslide and she temporarily receded from public view. After fallout with the National Federation of Republican Women, she formed her own women's organization, the Eagle Forum.
The Eagle Forum's veritable heyday came in the late 1970's/early 1980's when Schlafly came back onto the national stage. She became the New Right's favorite speaker against feminism/`Women's Lib'. Although Schlafly herself was a Harvard-trained lawyer and accomplished political activist, she instead emphasized that she was `just a housewife' who genuinely enjoyed mothering six kids. Schlafly consequently allowed the male conservatives to oppose ERA ratification efforts without themselves appearing sexist; `They' also supported women participating in politics.
This woman speaking out against women's liberation also made for effective media coverage because it exposed political divisions among women themselves. The women who joined anti-ERA ratification efforts were older, more religious and had less formal education than their pro-ERA counterparts. Viewing homemaking as their identity, `pro family' women felt that the ERA ultimately called their own self-worth into question. Because they were so content with their homemaking role they did not want to concede that the same role was fact limiting for other women who wanted something else/more and freedom to pursue their freedoms. Having strictly defined social and legal limits thus gave ERA opponents the illusion of security even if the world did not always run as smoothly.
Schlafly ironically has experienced her own sex discrimination. In spite of her best efforts, Ronald Reagan did not appoint her Secretary of Defense. She also has failed to get herself elected to public office. Despite MANY attempts made over the past 30 years---the `giant citizen base' which she always claims to speak on behalf of ultimately never transformed into electoral votes. These failures alternately prevent and save Schlafly from being held accountable by the `taxpayers'. She would not be able to function in an environment which demands a certain degree of party and/or ideological bipartisanship.
Schlafly's positions for creationism, one-size-fits all reading instruction, and opposition to vaccines are noticeably downplayed by many other conservatives. Many other conservatives know that those areas do not deliver enough voters in order for them to win an election. Because most people continue to support the `liberal' position in these areas, Schlafly's influence ironically is restricted to certain `women's issues'. For somebody who considers herself an `honorary male' such political limits must be the ultimate irony.
Critchlow notes that she continues to control the Eagle Forum, despite the token mentoring of younger conservative women who now join this organization through collegiate and youth chapters. The Eagle Forum remains an active force in American politics, but increasingly is being supplanted by `younger' organizations like the Independent Women's Forum who have a `fresh' appearance and concede the feminist movement has some merits such as the Independent Women's Forum. Because any organization needs regular officer elections/leadership changes in order to keep their group fresh and responsive to member needs and the charter, I am curious what will happen to the Eagle Forum when Schlafly dies?
He also examines the contradictions between Schafly's public gay-bashing and herself having a gay son. In 1992 John Schlafly was outed as gay, verifying that GLBT people do come from all families. Schlafly is the first to insist that she did everything `right' and promoted heterosexuality, but still cannot explain away her son's sexuality. Presently, Schlafly does less public attacking of gays than the other new right organizations, but she still labels them a threat---essentially labeling her own son a threat. John's public support for mom's political activities actually might belie a more complicated private relationship as a result.
This book's only real flaw is that in addition to a portrait of Schlafly, Critchlow then attempts to talk about the American right in general at some depth. He argues the conservative movement impacted American politics, even if not in the exact ways which the groups and/or public figures intended.
Although it's necessary to know that Schlafly's ultimate start in politics came as a researcher for the infamous red-hunter Senator Joseph McCarthy (R Wisconsin), a discussion of the right in general does not work in this same book. Agreeing that some comparison of leadership similarities and differences among other new right women is needed at some point, I think that he veered off his thesis during a lot of this other material and forgot what this particular book was supposed to be about during those points. These portions of his book are still scholarly, but subsequently become a case of trying to do too much with too little pages. Critchlow would have been better served by writing a second general book on the American right and gender.

Fips: Legendary U-Boat Commander

Book Description
Until now, finding reliable information on U-boats lost during World War I required fluency in German and a great deal of time. Not only was little information available in English but also German sources were difficult to track down and provided the barest of facts. Long in the making, this new reference fills the needs both of researchers looking for details of lost submarines and readers who enjoy action and adventure. It provides a comprehensive examination of each of the 203 U-boats that the Germans lost in the war. Fluent in German and at home in war archives, Dwight Messimer offers for the first time individual narratives of the men who survived their boat's sinking. Several made difficult escapes from sunken wrecks, and one man bailed out just as his submarine plunged past the 100-foot mark. Others were on deck or atop the coning tower when their boat went under.
In the case of boats listed as verschollen, or lost without a trace, the author includes explanations given for what might have happened or in the case of conflicting evidence, analyzes the explanations for accuracy. Each boat entry is a narrative that stands alone allowing readers to easily focus on a particular submarine. Researchers will appreciate the convenience of the book's format and the all-inclusive nature of the information listed. Because Messimer provides the approximate locations of many of the wrecks, amateur and professional salvage divers wanting to visit wreckage sights also will find the book useful.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent starting point for those engaged in research........2003-03-11
As a scuba diver of almost 30 years experience and something of an expert on "shipwrecks," I have visited a small number of submarine wrecks over the years. There is something very different about a wrecked submarine and I found the content of this book to be most informative and in some cases fascinating.
"Verschollen" is the German word used to describe a U-Boat which was lost without trace and, in this book, the author sets out all the available information about 375 such boats. By the very nature of such losses, in some cases, this amount to very little information - after all, U-Boats mysteriously lost at sea at a time of War were not prone to sending back a report explaining what had happened and where. The book itself is hard-back and measures 9¼" x 6¼" containing 330 pages of information. After an informative and very readable, introduction, the lost U-Boats are listed by type; U, UB and UC under which headings the lost vessels appear in numerical order.
Each boat is covered in the same way. The main headings comprise; Boat No, Date Lost, Commander, Location, Position and Disposition followed by a short narrative regarding that final journey. This may be anything from a half page to 2 pages depending on the information available I was particularly impressed by the way in which the account of each separate U-Boat is finished off with mention of the various sources of reference used by the author to determine each fate - as far as anyone can make such a determination. Anything between 2 and 5 separate reference sources from America, Britain and Germany are quoted for each lost boat and these alone betray a thorough job of work from this author.
I would have liked to have seen more photographs - but the book is no less important for that. This book is an invaluable "starting point" for those with an interest in lost U-Boats in addition to being a vital addition to any Scuba Diver's book-shelf.

Book Description
Superpatriots, writes Michael Parenti, are those people who place national pride and American supremacy above every other public consideration, those who follow leaders uncritically, especially in their war policies abroad. Superpatriotism is the nationalistic hype propagated by officialdom, the media, and various flag-waving groups.
Parenti demonstrates how superpatriotism attaches itself to religion, sports, the military, the schools and big business. He questions whether its top politico-economic propagators are themselves really patriotic, given how they evade taxes, export our jobs, pollute our land and plunder the public treasury.
With incisive probing and a humorous touch, Parenti addresses such urgent questions as: What does it mean to love one's country? Why is it so important to be Number One? What determines America's "greatness?" He examines how US leaders and the corporate media fan the flames of fear to win support for huge arms budgets, global aggrandizement, and the suppression of political dissent at home and abroad.
Finally, he poses an alternative to superpatriotism, arguing that the real patriots are those who care enough to educate themselves about our country's history and its present plight. He reminds us that it is not "anti-American" to criticize unjust social conditions at home or oppose global policies pursued by our rulers. Rather it is our democratic right and patriotic duty to do so.
Michael Parenti is one of the nation's leading progressive political analysts. An internationally known writer and speaker, he is the author of 17 books, including Democracy for the Few (seventh ed.) and The Assassination of Julius Caesar: A People's History of Ancient Rome. He has also published over 250 articles in scholarly journals, political periodicals, popular magazines, and nationally known newspapers. He lives in Berkeley, CA.
Customer Reviews:
Parenti, a True Patriot!.......2006-12-04
Super Patriotism puts in to focus: reasons for wars, why middle and lower class Americans are so eager to comply, what makes a patriot and who is truely American. Parenti, in few words, brilliantly examines our leaders, their minds and willingness to mislead the American people. Find out what it means to be a patriot and what America really is.
America: The Root of All Evil.......2006-01-01
America is bad. Everybody else is either good, or not responsible for their bad actions because, of course, America is to blame. Leftist propaganda. I give it 2 stars because the writing it good. The Michael Parentis of the world are useful to maintain balanced perspective. His extreme leftist views are useful to balance the extreme right views of others. He is not however to be regarded as the last word on his subject.
Brilliant, powerful, riveting and alarming!.......2005-10-15
I wish everyone could read this book -- and read it with an open mind! It is a comprehensive essay that focuses in on the manipulative devices employed on a daily basis by our politicians and the media that serves them! It's a hard hitting punch that keenly illustrates its point -- One that should be obvious to us all, but rarely is!
Anyone who reads this book will plainly see how the "big wheels" readily turn out the crazy "Henny Penny" scams that (since 9-11 and long before) have far too many people running around doing the hysterical dirty work of an all too powerful collective of dangerous and self-motivated manipulators!
In our national state of hysteria, it seems that we have forgotten the greatest lessons we learned over the past 40 years: Always Question Authority! There IS an ulterior motive!
Parenti explores the common devices (religion, sports and a host of nationalistic slants on every front) used to foster mouth-frothing, mob-mentality, patriotism -- the same old tricks with new dogs applying them!
This should be read as a companion to the political essays of George Orwell and Mencken's essay, "Disease of Democracy!"
Great read!
Makes you think about patriotism.......2005-10-08
Parenti's book really makes you think about patriotism. Is it blind or not. A good look at the country and poses some interesting questions.
If you hate communists, does that mean you love nazis?.......2005-09-10
The reviewer who gave this lucid and truthful book only one star accused Parenti of being a communist. I assume the reviewer disapproves of communism. Does that then mean that he/she approves of nazism? I'd really like to know. Read page 119 in "Superpatriotism" describing how George W. Bush's grandfather, Prescott Bush "made lush profits off Auschwitz labor. His Union Banking Corporation helped Thyssen make the Nazi steel that killed Allied solders, and helped finance Thyssen's coal mines which regularly worked Jewish prisoners to death." Read the rest of this page, and then explain to me why it is patriotic to have been in league with Nazis.
Book Description
The Tallgrass Restoration Handbook is a hands-on manual that provides a detailed account of what has been learned about the art and science of prairie restoration and the application of that knowledge to restoration projects throughout the world.
Chapters provide guidance on all aspects of the restoration process, from conceptualization and planning to execution and monitoring. Appendixes present hard-to-find data on plants and animals of the prairies, seed collection dates, propagation methods, sources of seeds and equipment, and more. Also included is a key to restoration options that provides detailed instructions for specific types of projects and a comprehensive glossary of restoration terms.
Written by those whose primary work is actually the making of prairies, The Tallgrass Restoration Handbook explores a myriad of restoration philosophies and techniques and is an essential resource for anyone working to nurture our oncevibrant native landscapes back to a state of health.
Customer Reviews:
Just a reprint of 1997 edition.......2006-09-26
If you don't already have the original 1997 edition, then this is definitely a 5 star title. However, if you DO have the original, don't bother to buy this one. Despite the various developments mentioned in the preface to this 2005 edition -- advances in no-till planting techniques, restoration strategies for woodland wildflowers, methods for integrating native biodiversity into agriculture, and exploding Internet resources -- none are dealt with here. There is no updated information about weed problems and herbicides, despite the ongoing advance of invasives and development of new products. Lots has happened in the field in the decade since the prior edition was written, but you learn none of it here. This is just a reprint of the original -- and this is quite disappointing.
That said, what is covered is truly excellent. It just could have been far better with a thorough rewrite.
The Tallgrass Restoration Handbook : For Prairies, Savannas,.......2001-07-30
Let me just say that it is nice that someone wrote more than just what plants to use. It is fairly easy to find prairie journals and books that describe everything except how to implement your prairie project. Packard had the good sense to know that seeding rates and implementation techniques are necessary information.
Amazing.............2001-01-05
This is a top rate restoration hand book. Amazing amount of information from people who are out doing the work. It is a collection of essays/chapters written by the front-runners in the field. Everything you wanted to know from site selction to seed collection to fire management. Since it is written by actual prairie restorationists, not theorists it is practical and easy to understand. I will recomend it to everyone who is interested in the field.
The prairie restoration and management bible........1999-08-18
As a prairie biologist, I refer to this seminal volume frequently. It is the very best compendium of prairie restoration and management information.
Anyone who has been taken by the ecological romance of the tallgrass prairie, and hopes either to know in detail the ecology of these biomes, or to plant or manage one, needs to have this in the personal library. It's mostly technical, but wonderfully engaging for the "prairieophile." One doesn't really know the prairie until having read this book.
