This quick reading book will help you boost your child's confidence while uplifting your own. I wish this book were available when our children were growing up. I'm recommending this book to the thousands of people I network with in conjunction with the newly published "Chicken Soup for the Prisoner's Soul" and while working on the upcoming "Chicken Soup for the Volunteer's Soul."

"An intimate, candid portrait of the Viet Cong/North Vietnamese Army...An absolute necessity for Vietnamese-studies collections."
During the war in Vietnam, the North Vietnamese communists had to place their trust in the oldest and most reliable tool of warfare: the individual soldier; America believed that firepower, lgoistics, and technology would be sufificent for victory. The North Vietnamese won. INSIDE THE VC AND THE NVA, written by two veterans with six-and-a-half years combined experience, shows how.

A good primer for extremist organizations.......2002-06-12
Having studied political, religious, and social extremist groups for over 15 yrs, I found this book to be a good primer for not just information on the VC and the NVA, but I saw parallels between the methods used by the VC/NVA and other extremist groups. Be they religious extremist groups or right wing militia type groups. Obviously the parallel breaks down if you take it too far, but it was very interesting and I'd recommend it to anyone who is interested in extremist groups - especially with the asymmetrical threat environment nowadays.
Great book.......2002-02-15
Overall I thought this was a great book. It went into great detail concerning even the most mundane details of VC/NVA life (I consider this an asset, not a liability). I enjoyed reading about how they fought, what kind of weapons they used, and the tactical and logistical details of the various VC/NVA units discussed. This book is limited in scope, after all it is called "Inside the VC and the NVA", so of course it's not going to go into detail about the ARVN fighting ability and THEIR details, nor does it address allied "atrocities". There were some drawbacks however. The VC and NVA interviews were interesting, but I think the information contained in them needs to be taken with a grain of salt. Although the authors address and dismiss the possibility of coercion, I think that's a very real possibility. Secondly, the book could have done without the input of the generals. For the most part, I thought the comments of the generals were suspect. After all, they had the kill ratio/body count agenda. All in all, a great book.
Excellent book.......2001-11-05
This book is a must-read for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the Vietnam war. The first review complains that this "reads like a school book. Ideal for the scholar, maybe less than ideal for the casual reader." Well, what did that "casual" reader expect from a book whose cover proclaims that it "fills a huge gap in the historiography of the Vietnam War" ??
This is NOT a dull or difficult book for anyone interested in the subject. The facts, figures, and background the authors include are very helpful in understanding what led the several armed forces to come into battlefield contact, and why they acted as they did. Particularly helpful is the authors' technique of letting participants tell their own stories -- even stories that contradict each other. The book has a helpful index, and extensive source notes and bibliography for those who wish to read further.
Perhaps the major fault of the book is that the authors detail the terror and coercive tactics of North Vietnamese forces, and the failings of North Vietnamese leadership, while omitting any mention of similar tactics and the failings of the US/South Vietnamese forces (except the inescapable acknowledgment of My Lai). By this omission, the authors leave the mistaken impression that South Vietnam had a legitimate and widely-supported democratic government with civil rights, whose secret police, ARVN, and US troops never engaged in abuse of the population and enemy prisoners. The VC/NVA actions should at least have been put in context by mention of the South Vietnamese/USA Phoenix program, corruption, tiger cages, etc. The reader may wish to also read _Our Vietnam/Nuoc Viet Ta: A History of the War 1954-1975_ by A. J. Langguth to get additional perspective on the failings of the South Vietnamese government.
The authors' limited use of their own feelings about the war, combined with a skillful combination of others' personal narratives and official reports and information, results in a very readable, informative and valuable book. Particularly moving is the Afterword, which reads in part, "We questioned each other and ourselves about whether we were 'going soft' on the VC/NVA who were dedicated to the deaths of our friends.... Yet, the more we researched and wrote, the more we learned that the majority of the VC/NVA did their duty as they saw it -- not unlike ourselves and our fellow soldiers....
"Slowly, and despite our efforts to do otherwise, we began to feel more kinship with the VC/NVA than we did with many of our fellow [civilian] Americans.... Even more sobering to us was the moment when we finally realized that we had more in common with our former enemies than with the politicians who had sent us to war."
Some Useful Insights, but Not Much Depth.......2001-01-28
A decent look at VC/NVA training, equipment, recruiting, organization and logistics. The authors were both combat veterans of Vietnam and their analysis carries credibility. Unfortunately, the core of this book rests on two very subjective sections: captured VC/NVA diaries and post-war American surveys on the VC/NVA. There is very little tactical analysis of how the VC/NVA fought and no analysis of specific actions (it would have been useful to dissect a few selective actions with accounts from both sides). Overall, the book is valuable for painting a portrait of a determined, resourceful enemy who made do with much less than we thought possible. Most important is the conclusion that NVA morale was sustained by their indoctrination/propaganda and the value of group criticism/group cohesion. Several maps, adequate but barely.
Well researched and yes detailed- so what?.......1999-06-04
Lanning and Crasgg produces a well researched tome drawing on numerous NVA/VC prisioner/ defector interviews. The book is excelent and offers a salient reminder to the naivete of so many who still romanticize the VC/NVA as noble, black pajama clad part-time farmers.
In fact they were very tough troops, living on a supply package incomprehensible to Western armies, and very well motivated. Fighting on their own home ground, amidst a friendly or intimidated local population, and with favorable terrain and relatively secure sanctuary areas, they were given, they were well equipped, well organized and skillful adversaries. They were also a murderous, vicious and ruthless force as the hail of well documented assasinations, terror bombings, and massacres they carried out shows - a reality too often forgotten by the naive or apologists for Communism.
Some reviewer complained that: "Lanning does such a good job, that I think he overdoes it. Parts of the text read much like accounts of Caesar's struggles in Gaul. Doe we really need to know what a bunch of stuffed-shirt REMF generals thought of the VC and NVA? Do we really want to know the political struggles that took place behind closed doors in Hanoi? "Inside the VC and NVA" reads like a school book. "
Yes friend we do really need to know. We need to know that these people, vicious and ruthless as they were, were not merely "gooks" but also human beings who wrote letters home and yes, composed poetry. The books adds a human dimension to the VC/NVA often missing in discussions about the 'Nam.
And yes friend, we do really need to know the behind the scene political struggles- for they expose the naivete of the dupes who envisaged a noble "general uprising" or a simple "internal" insurgency led by "oppressed southern compadres" when in reality behind the scenes the brutal facts of northern manipulation, domination and hegemony held sway.
And yes we do really need to know such details as the typical VC/NVA march formation or how they constructed bunkers. They show that these people, within the parameters of their conflict, and the political limitations imposed on US Forces, knew what the hell they were doing, and were a tough enemy to overcome.
This book should be required reading. It adds a military perspective with a new twist. There are a glut of such perspectives from the American side- helicopters, firebases, Big Iron hitting the Ho Chi Minh trail, etc. Now we have added to our knowledge a little of what it was like on the receiving end, and how our enemies coped and eventually triumphed. It offers lessons not to be forgotten.

Book Description
A remembrance of Lincoln's days of November 1863, when he wrote and delivered the Gettysburg address, sets the stage for a remembrance of other November days, among them the Armistice ending World War I; Kristallnacht, initiating the Holocaust; and the assassination of John F. Kennedy. November seeks to relate private and public heroism in a search for America's identity.

An amazing achievement.......2002-01-10
Kent Gramm's latest book, November, Lincoln's Elegy at Gettysburg, is a remarkable achievement. This work contains a profound series of meditations on history, loss, values, idealism, and patriotism, inspired by Gramm's sojourn, throughout the month of one November, in and around Gettysburg. Although his search for the exact spot where Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg address is the ostensible reason for his visit there, this quest - and his determination to reflect each day on what Lincoln had been doing on each day of November 1963 (leading up to and following the delivery of the address) - actually provide a touchstone for reflections both wide and deep on our country's history, and the standards to which we must hold ourselves. World War I, Vietnam, World War II, the Civil War, the assassination of JFK, the life of Robert Kennedy, Martin Luther and Martin Luther King, modernism and postmodernism, and the loss of beloved parents, all provide topics for thoughtful rumination. This book is profound, absorbing, inspiring, poetic, and deeply moving. It is a book you will want to revisit, and from which you will find yourself reading aloud to friends.
Excellent analysis & meditation of events from November........2002-01-05
A few years ago I ran upon a book titled: "Gettysburg: A Meditation on War and Values" by Kent Gramm. Being a history teacher and Civil War enthusiast, I bought the book and devoured it. I use it as a guide on my annual trip to Gettysburg. I was always wondering when Mr. Gramm would publish a new book. Well, the wait is over. "November" picks up where "Gettysburg" left off. This book is excellent for students of the Civil War and general history enthusiasts alike. Mr. Gramm uses Lincoln's Gettysburg Address and the month of November as a starting point for his interpretations of several key events in history, both in America and in the world. Included in his analysis are JFK's assasination, the death of C.S. Lewis, the Holocaust, RFK's impact on America, and the Vietnam War. Mr. Gramm also traces his family history and writes eloquetly about how his ancestry fits into the larger canvas of American history. Using Lincoln's famous words, Mr. Gramm paints a portrait of the deeper meanings of our identity as Americans, our history, and our place in the world. This is not a work of history in the tradition of batte narratives or campaign overviews. Rather, it is a moving, deep and touching look at the heartbeat and soul of the America that Lincoln spoke about in November 1863 and how it applies to us in the 21st century. As you read this excellent book, you will be reminded of Lincoln's gift of eloquence. The month of November has witnessed numerous key events in the history of America and the world. Thanks to Mr. Gramm and his magnificent book, these events have taken on a deeper, more spirtiual meaning to me. I recommend this book without hesitation or reservation.

Book Description
Martin MartyÂprofessor, author, pastor, historian, and journalistÂis, in Bill MoyersÂ's words, Âthe most influential interpreter of American religion. In Martin Luther this man of unswerving faith, rooted in his own Lutheran tradition yet deeply committed to helping enrich a pluralist society, brings to powerful life the devout Reformation figure whose despair for a perilous world, felt anew in our own times, drove him to a ceaseless search for assurance of GodÂ's love. It was one that led him steadily to a fresh interpretation of human interaction with GodÂas born solely from GodÂ's grace and not the ChurchÂ's mediationÂand to the famous theses he posted at Wittenberg in 1517.
LutherÂ's persistence in this belief, and in his long battle with Church leadersÂembellished by rich historical backgroundÂmake MartyÂ's biography riveting reading. LutherÂ's obdurate yet receptive stance, so different from the travestied image of Âfundamentalism we currently face, restored the balance between religion and the individual. Martin Luther is at once a fascinating history, a story of immense spiritual passion and amazing grace, and a superb intellectual biography.

An Introduction To A Tremendously Important Life.......2007-09-01
For a reader looking for a concise, relatively short, introduction to the life of one of Christianity's most important figures, "Martin Luther" by Martin Marty is an excellent choice. This book does a good job of surveying the life and teachings of this founder of the Reformation. Marty presents a balanced picture, neither attacking its subject nor ignoring his faults and shortcomings. He generally presents the facts and lets the reader draw his own conclusions. While not ignoring Luther's sensual appetites, Marty explains how they conform to his theological teaching. Luther's attractiveness to princes but his hostility to the empowerment of peasants is an example of an historical fact which limits the vision of Luther as a champion of "democracy" against the establishment.
At times the book seems to focus on Luther's writings and preaching, but later gets into more personal details. I suspect that this reflects the scarcity of the historical record with respect to some parts of Luther's life. While not delving into an analysis of Luther's impact on the world, the mere recitation of his life's work enables the reader to appreciate the tremendous impact which Luther has had on history. The reader, whether Protestant, Catholic or non-religious, who is interested in either religious or secular history will find "Martin Luther" to an worthwhile read.
Excellent biography for the casual reader.......2007-06-26
I've got to give the book 5 stars simply because Marty, a Lutheran, had me disliking the guy at the end :-). It's a much more balanced biography, for example, than Here I Stand, which I read many years ago. Marty is an excellent writer. He uses words well, chooses good words, and doesn't waste them. Marty's writing is one of the highlights of the book. The book moves quickly, which is unusual for a biography. More than that, I think Marty provides a plausible, unifying theme to Luther's life. He was clearly not a fun guy. He was intense, fiercely competitive, short-tempered, "over the top". Unlike many religious biographies, this one portrays a man who was deeply flawed, who arguably never developed a satisfying relationship with God. To Luther, you either saw things exactly his way, or you were his enemy. If people had to die to get his gospel preached (himself or others), oh well. As with some Christians today, he felt perfect confidence that his way was THE way, the ONLY way, and that everyone else, for better or worse, was going to hell.
As an example of steadfastness and single-mindedness, he's awesome. You've got to admire someone who knew so thoroughly what he wanted to accomplish, and pursued it with a vengeance, come whatever may. But I can't help wondering if in his zeal, he missed the heart of God. Luther seems to have had a hatred for anyone who didn't "get it", anyone who stood in his (and therefore the gospel's) way, be they peasants or Jews. Luther was a positive for the world and Christianity, but clearly a very flawed human being.
lutheran expert on luther.......2007-01-18
It is hard to believe that for one of the single most important figures in western history, whose collected works run to fifty-five volumes, there are only three or four biographies now in print in English. But so it is for Martin Luther, which makes this biography by Martin Marty a welcome addition. Marty's volume takes its place in the Penguin Lives series, a series which tries to match famous figures with well known authors for the general audience.
Marty takes as his guiding theme Luther's lifelong struggle with God: "God present and God absent, God too near and God too far, the God of wrath and the God of love, God weak and God almighty, God real and God as illusion, God hidden and God revealed." The German word upon which Marty fastens this theme is Anfechtungen, a word that is hard to translate but very easy indeed for people to appreciate: "the spiritual assaults that Luther said kept people from finding certainty in a loving God." Anfechtungen, said Luther, precipitated a "delicious despair" or crisis of certainty for which the believer could only cast himself upon the mercy of God. For the believer, in Luther's scheme, there is a sure security of faith, but no certainty free of struggle, doubt, anxiety, fears and spiritual warfare. At the end of the day, though, the believer rests in the knowledge that God in Christ says to us, "I am more certain to you than your own heart and conscience."
Marty takes us through the major passages of Luther's life: his time in the monastery, his home, the emerging Protestant church, his life as a university scholar and writer, and his civic life in politics. It used to be that Roland Bainton's biography Here I Stand (1950) was the standard life of Luther. Marty's wonderful volume is likely to take its place.
Good Introduction to Luther's Life.......2006-12-12
Martin Marty has written what I believe is a good introduction to the great reformer, Martin Luther. At less than 200 pages, the book is a good primer although I am sure there are other more detailed accounts of Luther's life out there.
The book's chapters are as follows:
1. The Hunger for Certainty, 1483-1519.
2. Defining the Life of Faith, 1520-1525.
3. Living the Faith, 1525-1530.
4. The Heart Grown Cold, the Faith More Certain, 1530-1546.
Marty touches on Martin's early life, married life, tensions with the Catholic Church, personal struggles, and his own faults.
All in all, a good introduction to Martin Luther's life. Recommended.
Riveting.......2006-02-13
I've enjoyed every one of the Penguin Lives books that I've picked up so far. History isn't my primary field of study, so I've not the time to delve into the 1000 page tomes. The series, thus, sort of fills in a gap. It allows a bit of an entrance into these important lives for casual readers like myself.
The Martin Luther volume by Martin Marty is, so far, the best of the series that I've read. Luther led a truly fascinating life, and the condensed nature of this short biography makes the biography at moments read like an adventure. That's not to say that Marty sacrificed scholarship in order to make the subject more interesting. Luther's life was adventuresome in many ways, and his personal struggles, the devopment of his thought, and the culture of ideas that influenced him are all probed insightfully. I particularly appreciated Marty's use of the metaphor of Jacob wrestling God as a comprehensive string for tying together and understanding Luther's life.
This was really a strong little work. It definitely works for what it was intended. Without simply being a cliffs notes biography, it serves an entry point into Luther's life and theology for the intelligent reader.

Let's not wait for government or someone else to solve all the problems. Take action yourself.
There are so many ways one can improve their community. If your concern is crime, then join the neighborhood watch group. Perhaps you worry that the community's past is slipping away. Train as a docent for the local history museum.
If you don't know where to start, consult this directory for dozens of opportunities to make a difference.
Don't Waste Your Money - Buy Another Book.......2004-07-29
This book touts itself on the cover as being America's Guide to Volunteering and Community Service, but it comes across instead as being a scathing political commentary, spending way too much time bashing President Bush before it even gets into the guide portion of the book, which is a scant resource, at best.
If it stuck to being a comprehensive guide about volunteering and community service it might have actually lived up to its title. If I had only browsed through it in a bookstore before buying it online. Oh well. Live and learn. Very offensive to any republican volunteers, in my opinion. Tossing it in the trash right now.
A handy-dandy guide to getting involved.......2004-05-04
"Make a Difference" is an easy-to-read guide about volunteering with hundreds of community-based organizations. Blaustein does a fabulous job organizing the organizations by subject matter so readers can easily find opportunities that suit their interests. This book makes a fabulous gift for high schoolers, college students, and adults looking to make a difference.
It does make a difference.......2004-04-21
Make a Difference is a unique and important book. It's especially for young people and those retired or thinking about it; as well as those of us in between who can always find a few hours a month to help better our communities and public institutions. The young, in particular, need to learn about the responsibility of citizenship and the workings of democracy. If I were President I'd scrap the Star Wars anti-missile system (that scientists say won't work anyhow) and use the money to give out this book to every high school and college student in the country. And use the left-over to increase the salary of teachers who teach American history and Civics. That would be far more patiotic than wearing a flag in my lapel.
one-stop shopping for the seeking volunteer.......2004-04-20
An excellent comprehensive listing of national organizations whose doors are wide open and welcoming to compassionate individuals looking to make a difference in their communities. The book is sliced and diced by issue area, making it easy to navigate, and the contact information for each organization listed makes it easy to get moving. Dispersed throughout the book are personal accounts of the positive impact community service has on the community as well as the individual. Makes a great gift - for yourself or someone you love!

Very Informative Book.......2006-03-14
This book is a very informative book. It is very well written and researched. I have been able to institute many of these ideas into my deer hunting activities.
Almost All You Need to Practice QDMA.......2003-07-02
The authors are nationally recognized experts and it shows. Page after page of the science of white-tailed deer makes for informative and most of the time interesting reading.
As a QDM practitioner I found the book somewhat low on "how to" but very very high on background and research. It is an excellent reference text but I like Dougherty & Dougherty's "Grow'Em Right" for "how to" information on food plots and habitat creation.
This book is a classic and should be on every serious whitetail enthusiast's book shelf. I would like to see it updated with more "how to" information for non-experts like myself.
Excellent book - must have for Quality Deer Management.......2001-11-20
I am very impressed by this book. If you are a landowner or member of a hunt club and want to improve the quality of the deer on the land you manage, this book is mandatory. It explains the how and why of Quality Deer Management (QDM) It convincingly debunks many of the myths about whitetail deer. It is not a book on how to hunt. It is a book on how to improve your deer herd to produce a healthy population with more trophy bucks. I have started to implement QDM on my land, and I am buying two more copies for Christmas presents for my hunter friends so they will understand what I am trying to accomplish.
Great for the experienced and inexperienced.......2000-08-16
I've hunted whitetail since I was 14 (only 10 seasons), and recently I learned of the Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA). Wanting to learn more about Quality Deer Management (QDM), I found this book.
Reading this book was the best possible thing I could have done for myself and the sport of deer hunting. It teaches you the basics of QDM and explains why you should do it. This book addresses old myths like why it is bad to shoot anterless deer. It explains that QDM is about deer heard health, not just antler size. It expains how to set up a program on your property, explaining how to do deer density counts, why deer weight is important to get, how to age a deer, types of food plots, etc..
I feel this is an important book for whitetail hunters to read. I hunt on public land, and before reading this book, I would have shot the first buck I saw. Now, I've learned that where I hunt, it is more important to let the buck walk on by.
Quality Whitetails.......2000-07-14
Simply put; this book is a must for those who are serious about QDM. This book is the bible of the how and why of Quality Deer Management and takes you from theory to practicle application. Buy it, read it, reference it and apply it.
