5 out of 5 stars A Must Have Book For the Parents of Gifted Toddlers.......2003-03-01

This book is excellant! I have bought many books on gifted children and this is one of the best. This book is especially great if you have a gifted toddler. It will tell you everything from identification procedures (has a check list)to what the ramifications could be in a child whose talents are waisted because of being overlooked (it can lead to deliquency and depression in adolesence). This book will guide you on how to deal with everyday situations and has suggestions on activities as well as how to focus and develop the emotional needs of this high demand child. This book is a must have your money will not be waisted!

1 out of 5 stars Dave Kopel is an idiot........2005-12-31

It's unfortunate if people are dumb enough to be pursuaded by the type of crap that Dave Kopel writes. 5 minutes of research exposes his cause, and yet years of research probably wouldn't determine how and why it is his cause. Nevertheless what he writes here is insulting to most Swiss and to most Jewish people. Any idiot who's seen a war movie with even a hint of military strategy would know why the Nazis didn't bother to steamroll the Swiss whenever they wanted. And any idiot who knows anything about WWII would know why the Nazis were less than hostile towards the Swiss. One figure which Dave neglects is that the Jewish population in Switzerland in 1933 was 18000, versus its comparably sized neighbors Austria which had 250000 and Hungary which had 445000. When it secretly holds your money, poses no threat, is aryan, is completely surrounded, has no strategic resources or ports, and can be taken at any time, why on Earth would you waste time taking it when your military is literally racing towards Moscow? That is, Swiss neutrality has nothing to do with farmers having muskets in their barns. And Sweden maintained neutrality for exactly the same reasons as Switzerland.

4 out of 5 stars A spirited defense of a nation and its traditions.......2002-01-22

At one point in his narrative, Stephen Halbrook quotes Philipp Etter, a Swiss federal counselor from the 1930s through the 50s. In 1937, Etter wrote, 'The armed defense of the country is a primary and substantial task of the state. The mental defense of the country falls primarily not on the state but on the person, the citizen. No government and no battalions are able to protect right and freedom where the citizen himself is not capable of stepping to the front door and seeing what is outside.' No one familiar with Halbrook's other works should be surprised that this seems to be one of the key lessons Halbrook wants us to learn from his history of Switzerland in World War II.

Halbrook makes it clear that Switzerland walked a tightrope during the War. Fierce and well trained as the Swiss citizen-army was, it was not eager to tangle with Hitler's Wehrmacht. Though unquestionably sympathetic to the allies, the Swiss were determined to maintain their neutrality. If that meant making some economic concessions to Germany in order to keep the Nazis from overrunning the country, the Swiss were willing, reluctantly, to do that. It's easier to second-guess that decision from half a century's distance than it must have been at the time, when national-socialist armies dominated the continent and liberation was still a distant dream.

As other reviewers have noted, Halbrook is clearly sympathetic, not only to the Swiss nation generally, but specifically to its armed-citizenry approach to national defense. With Switzerland being so greatly maligned in recent years, it's not surprising that voices have been raised in its defense as well. While not perhaps perfect, 'Target Switzerland' is a fascinating and enlightening explanation of the dilemma in which Switzerland found itself in the 1930s and 40s, and why and how that nation chose to do the things it did.

5 out of 5 stars David and Goliath.......2001-01-02

I am a history buff and have always been interested in World War II, especially in Europe. In TARGET SWITZERLAND, Stephen P. Halbrook gives a fascinating explanation of Switzerland's role in that epic conflict.

I had never given much thought to the Swiss experience in the Second World War. About the only current material I had seen on Switzerland tended to be critical of it for staying neutral and maintaining a certain level of commercial cooperation with Hitler and his allies. Jean Ziegler's THE SWISS, THE GOLD AND THE DEAD, is an example of contemporary Swiss bashing.

Halbrook's book provides a well-written, thorougly researched antidote. He describes how a polyglot republic with a population of only 4 million could defend its territory while surrounded by 120 million Nazis and Fascists devoted to Hitler's and Mussolini's dreams of conquest.

Switzerland placed an unprecedented one-fifth of its population under arms in the process. That didn't leave enough people for agriculture so the Swiss were hungry throughout most of the war, and cold. German coal heated most of their homes.

Yet, when Luftwaffe aircraft invaded Swiss airspace they came under attack and several were shot down. It is interesting to compare the Swiss response to that of the Great Powers and their policy of Appeasement.

I enjoyed this book and came away with a new found respect for the Swiss and their determination to keep the Holocaust off of their soil.

3 out of 5 stars Good intention - unfortunately not very correct historically.......2000-06-19

It is nice to hear or better, read, something positive about Switzerland and its role during WWII after so many discussions and a rather bad impression we made during the discussions about returning money of dormant accounts of Jewish people... Only pressure from the outside really pushed the Swiss to think about ALL aspects of this tragic years...

Unfortunately the myth of a armed and well motivated Swiss army as a major deterrent for the German forces to invade Switzerland is still holding up and this book does not really contribute to give a more balances account on the reasons why Switzerland wasnt invaded.

New information made available in the last months from the archives of the German secret service during WWII shows that the Germans had very precise and detailed knowlege about the organization of the Swiss army, it's units, orders and fortifications. Unfortunately a large number of Swiss did in fact spy for the Germans during WWII which resulted also in more than a dozen executions during this period.

All in all are we still waiting for a book that really puts Switzerland in its place... Between exagerated criticism accusing Switzerland of collaboration with Germany and the exagerated glorification of the role of the Swiss army.

The way the author insists in the fact that Swiss men keep their weapon at home makes me wonder if this isnt a semi-hidden attempt to justify the legal right to own guns in the USA. He seems to forget that the reason why Swiss soldiers keep their weapons at home is that we do not have any professional army... We have a milita system and therefore need the soldiers to be mobilized within hours and days. Therefore his personal equipment must be available at home. Its nothing more than that.

3 out of 5 stars A must read for the ex-patriot living in Switzerland.......1999-11-20

This book is a must read for any ex-patriot living in Switzerland or for any tourist visiting Switzerland.

It provides insight into the current Swiss mentality and shows how close the Swiss came to being swallowed up by the Germans.

The book is a bit technical and tends to focus on the same theme throughout , which at times is somewhat laborious.

Overall, a good read and very educational.

    Book Description

An anthology for courses dealing with great power diplomacy in the 19th century, this book raises crucial questions in the history of European foreign relations and seeks to address those questions through excerpts from the documentary record. Included are sources from conference protocol, and treaties as well as from previously untapped sources such as speeches, diary entries, and correspondence. Half the documents included have been translated into English for the first time. Each chapter is introduced by a brief paragraph placing that chapter in a larger historical context. Each document, or group of documents, comes with a head note that introduces the reader to the debates that document has generated and provides a point of departure for discussion or independent research. The text includes maps and concludes with a bibliographical essay that discusses issues of historiography and provides an extensive list for further readings.

                  Book Description

Starting at an introductory level, the book leads rapidly to important and often new results in synthetic differential geometry. From rudimentary analysis the book moves to such important results as: a new proof of De Rham's theorem; the synthetic view of global action, going as far as the Weil characteristic homomorphism; the systematic account of structured Lie objects, such as Riemannian, symplectic, or Poisson Lie objects; the view of global Lie algebras as Lie algebras of a Lie group in the synthetic sense; and lastly the synthetic construction of symplectic structure on the cotangent bundle in general. Thus while the book is limited to a naive point of view developing synthetic differential geometry as a theory in itself, the author nevertheless treats somewhat advanced topics, which are classic in classical differential geometry but new in the synthetic context.
Audience: The book is suitable as an introduction to synthetic differential geometry for students as well as more qualified mathematicians.

This book is by far the most readable introduction to Synthetic Differential Geometry that there currently is. The book concentrates on building up axiomatic SDG with hardly a reference to ways of modelling it (ie: using topos theory), leaving the complicated mathematics until a good feeling for how SDG behaves is acquired. A good first read.

After having participated in Bible Study Fellowship for the last 10 years, I'm glad I finally took the opportunity to "know" A. Wetherell Johnson personally. To God be the Glory!

This story has inspired me to seek God more fervently. I read the book because I attend a BSF class and wanted to know more about it's founder. What I didn't expect was what I received from the example of her life.....her book has been a life-changing inspiration!

I read this one twice when we were overseas. Both times it reminded me Whom I was serving. (No, we're not missionaries.)

This book humbled me. I enjoyed it so, so very much.

I can't read theology. I enjoy getting my messages from God through the lives of those who loved Him. Thank God for Wetherell's story.

                        Wonderful!

This book is a great read. I found the life experiences of Miss Johnson fascinating. Her life was truly dedicated to God and the experiences she shares show how God weaves all the facets of our lives to work ALL things (good and bad) for the good of those who love Him. This book made me think BIG! I think we all focus too much on matters which don't have eternal importance. It also made me consider what I am doing for God. The main change it brought to my life is my desire to rekindle the Holy Spirit which I had snuffed out many times by not being responsive. Miss Johnson's autobiography caused me to want what she had....the Holy Spirit actively working in her heart.

It is unfortunate that this book's usefulness as an authoritative source is compromised by numerous (glaring) errors. On the plus side the illustrations are first rate.

It's a pretty book, but if you are looking for serious information, look elsewhere.

Collectors and Historians have long been fascinated with the seemingly endless variations of insignia, badges, and decorations and medals awarded to the members of both the civil and military personnel of the Germany of the Nazi era. These have been avidly collected since I was a child. But before that the emphasis was on the German Army of the Imperial period from 1870s to 1918.
Though much of that material is now gone due to the ravages of the last eighty some years and the surviving bits are mainly in museums, some occassionally comes out of an attic or dusty cellar trunk when great grandad's property is sold.
This book will be essential to anyone who has a rational plan for collecting this material. It is a distillation of the German Army's Order of Battle, and wartime histories, and contains tables, lists, and detailed descriptions of all the insignia and orders of clothing worn and the individual equipment carried. Other works should be consulted for the details of small arms, ordnance, and aircraft. This book focuses on the individual soldier.
As with all the books in this series I have seen, the use of color plates and the large magazine size format combine to make it a pleasure to peruse and consult again and again. Not a book to be read straight through and forgotten but one to dip into now and again.

                                4 out of 5 stars Excellent book!.......2000-06-13

This is a great book for those who are interested in the German Imperial Army. It contains historical info on the uniforms and weapons used by the German Soldat of WWI. I was disappointed to find not many colour photos of the equipment and uniforms, however, this book makes up by its large amount of period photos of soliders and its few colour photos it does have which are excellent.

                                2 out of 5 stars Boring + Overdramatic = Annoying.......2007-02-02

I am currently almost halfway through this audiobook and don't like it. I tried to like it during the first hour or two but cannot - I hate it. I would stop listening to the book but my nondiscriminating son is fascinated by it. I would love to introduce him to *good* WWII stories, such as We Die Alone, Currahee or Roll Me Over but they are not available in audiobooks or not appropriate for his age.

My chief complaint about the book is the overly dramatic viewpoint. Instead of writing about action and doing more research to put perspective on the action, the author is too caught up with his emotions and thoughts. This makes it a very boring read (well, okay, "listen" in my case).

I get bored and cynical during the author's soliloquies and just find them annoying. It is maddening when he writes about what he reads in peoples' eyes or deep in their "being." Please!

I was hoping for a read similar to Currahee but it seemed like forever for the action to get started. Also, too much of the book is devoted to the author's early life in Texas. If you buy this book, I suggest you rip out the first two chapters. Boring, boring, boring. (Not the author's fault - I blame the editor.)

I would have given it 1 star but for great respect I have for WWII veterans. If you are looking for a great WWII read try the books mentioned above.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing true story that ought to be made into a film........2004-03-13

I listened to this book as an unabridged book on CD and it was just an excellent true story. It follows Tommy from his youth in Texas, through joining the army air force because patriotism and a love of flying when the war broke out, going to England, then being shot down over France in his B-17, joining the French resistance, being betrayed to the Germans by a French traitor on the eve of his return to England, being sentenced to death as a spy by the Germans, at the last minute being sent to a POW camp instead, then more camps as he was moved further ever more east, then his escape, then joining with a Russian army unit attacking from the East, seeing the Mongolian terror troops the Russians were using the scare the hell out of even the SS, meeting and falling in love with the beautiful Rosa when the Russians captured the concentration camp she was being held in, finally the end of the war, return to France with his beloved Rosa with the intent to take her back to Texas and then a surprise ending that just kicks the wind out of you because you think it's building up to a big happy ending. Reality is not like that.

A fantastic read (or listen) and it's all true.

By the way, the beautiful girl Tommy fell in love with, Rosa, was a Polish girl, not a Russian like the Amazon book rview says. To call her a Russian in light of what happens at the end of the book is an outrageous error.

Smack dab in the middle of a great, true, WWII story of yearning, fulfillment, capture and escape is a great love story worthy of a poet's description. This book will put you on a roller coaster ride that you will not soon forget; one of the best books I have read this year !

                                5 out of 5 stars A unique war memoir.......2002-04-02

One Man's War is the gripping and harrowing memoir of Tommy Lamore, who served in the Army Air Corps during WWII. The bright-eyed kid from Waco, Texas, who had always dreamed of being a flier, soon learned that war is not just guts and glory. As a B17 tailgunner flying bombing missions over Europe, Lamore experienced the nerve-shattering onslaught of noise and violent motion, the sustained panic of a man fighting for survival against skilful foes and just plain bad luck.

The accounts of these battle scenes expertly evoke the sights and sounds of air battle. Flak barrages, numbing cold, hurtling fighter planes trying to shoot Lamore out of the sky; it really feels that personal. We feel the relief of the arrival of American air cover, we are heartened by the sight of safe haven, and we are awed by the courage it took to fight off the sheer exhaustion and fear, just to get back up in the air and do it all again.

When Lamore's plane was downed by a freak accident over France, he was sheltered by local people, evaded Nazi search parties and was recruited by the French Resistance. His training in munitions made him valuable in sabotage operations, and for a while he lived an dangerous and exciting undercover life.

His sudden betrayal to the Gestapo led him to the hell-on-earth of the Nazi prison camps. The physical and psychological tortures and a dipththeria epidemic took their toll, but Lamore survived with his spirit intact, finally escaping from a death-camp on the German-Polish border. Luckily, he encountered the advancing Russian Army, and joined them as they pushed the Germans back towards Berlin. He found he was traveling with a Mongolian Terror-Troop unit. It is not often that Americans can read of the Russians' contribution to winning the war, let alone the Mongolians', and these passages are memorable. I found myself wondering what it was that made Mongolian fighting methods seem even more barbaric than the Europeans'. Was it just the context of European soil? Or some holdover from the 'chivalry' of classic European-style warfare? Were they more likely to kill you than any other soldier? Whatever it was, they scared the hell out of the Germans.

One Man's War contains another unique twist - a love story in the midst of horror. The Russian unit liberates a women's prison camp, where unspeakable crimes have been committed. Among the freed prisoners is a Polish woman, Rosa, who speaks English. She and Lamore fall in love, comforting and healing each other as they continue onwards with the Mongolian unit.

Eventually, the cease-fire is announced and Lamore makes contact with British troops. He and his beloved Rosa make their way to Paris, where Lamore's dream of bringing her to the States is dashed. Rosa knows she must return to Poland to find her family. Lamore has to let her go, with just a ring to remember her by.

The final episode in the book is also the final straw. Lamore is ordered to return to the death camp from which he escaped, to help the Red Cross document the slaughter that happened there shortly after Lamore's got away. The sight and smell of the place, the memories and nightmares it evokes, push Lamore over the edge into deep despair and fatigue, and he is shipped back to the States.

The sad, but essential, message of this superb story is the horrific toll that war takes, even on the victors. Here, in this book, we witness the worst depravities of which we are capable, the despair and the clawing fear, the paralyzing exhaustion. But also, the hope that even in the midst of the hell we create for ourselves, there is redemption in love, even if only for a while. Lamore was deeply affected, as any sane person would be, by his experiences, but around his neck until he died in 1997 hung the ring that Rosa gave him in Paris.

One Man's War is a finely-written book. Congratulations to Dan A. Baker for capturing Tommy Lamore's unique story so brilliantly, and bringing it so vividly to life.

When I first read the dust jacket and saw all the things that Tommy LaMore had to endure during his tour of duty in WWII my first thought was "this must be fiction". Well, it is all true and truly amazing. I have read many personal memiors about WWII and I compare all I read to the two best one: "The Forgotten Soldier" and "With The Old Breed". This book is witout a doubt in that class. I don't say that lightly. Mr. LaMore goes from being a tail gunner on a bomber, to being shot down, to the French underground, to the Soviet army approaching Berlin. Along the way, you will meet some really unique characters. My favorite is the Soviet commander who takes a liking to Tommy and tries to keep him safe until he can be turned over to the British. You will also meet the love of his life when he encounters a womens concentration camp and discovers a beautiful polish surviver. Their story alone is worth the price of the book. Outstanding! I won't tell you how it ends but please, please, get this book. You will remember it long after the last page is turned.

NASA really began it's days in the sun with the space race with the Soviet Union. In October 1957 the Soviet Union launched the first orbiting earth satellite. This was before the United States was even scheduled to launch their first one. Then the Soviet Sputnik was so big. Then the Vanguard rocket NASA was using lifted off, went up beautifully for a few feet then beautifully went back down for several feet before blowing up.

Then John Kennedy gave NASA a mission - to take a man to the moon and return him saftly to the earth. It was a beautiful time. The country was filled with pride as one accomplishment after another took us to the moon.

Since then it almost seems as if NASA has been floundering. The big question has been between unmanned equipment and sending men up.

Another argument centers around the entire concept of a big agency like NASA. For a cost in the $20 million range, Burt Rutan (www.scaled.com) built Space Ship One and successfully flew it into space. NASA couldn't even write a proposal to buy such a ship for $20 million.

This book talks about the trouble NASA has had in defining a mission and makes a few guesses about the future.

The Chesapeake Bay is one of the most productive and important ecosystems on earth, and as such is a model for other estuaries facing the demands of commerce, tourism, transportation, recreation, and other uses. Turning the Tide presents a comprehensive look at two decades of efforts to save the bay, outlining which methods have worked and which have not.

Overall, the book was enjoyable to read, it really informed me of the problems the Chesapeake Bay faces each and everyday. I felt that the author used charts, graphs, and examples in a way that helps the reader fully understand the science that he/she is reading. I recommend this book to all of those readers who are affected by the Chesapeake Bay or who just wants to learn more about the environment in general.

This book is a fascinating 300 page message to the public that if the Cheasapeake Bay, a long sufferer of pollution and overharvesting, is to survive as both a marketable commodity and a landmark of the southeast, many changes must be put into place. Horton explains many interwoven factors contributing to the bay's problems, including nitrogen, phosphorus pollution (from farm fertilizers), sediment pollution (which clouds water and suffocates underwater grasses), overfishing, and sprawl development. It was really interesting to see how all these parts were the sum of a greater equation, and gets you to think how something simple you do everyday and take for granted really could have an effect on something miles away (hairspray, anyone?). The one thing I didn't like though is that a lot of the information was repeated (probably intentional to stress his points) and you could pretty much get the gist of the book before you were halfway done. But overall, a very solid, eyeopening, and unflinchingly LIBERAL book!
