Target Switzerland: Swiss Armed Neutrality in World War ll

Book Description
The first English book to describe the military history of Switzerland during World War II, including Nazi attack plans and Swiss defensive strategies. Examines Nazi hostility to Switzerland and Swiss economic and humanitarian links to the Allies.Customer Reviews:
Dave Kopel is an idiot........2005-12-31
A spirited defense of a nation and its traditions.......2002-01-22
Halbrook makes it clear that Switzerland walked a tightrope during the War. Fierce and well trained as the Swiss citizen-army was, it was not eager to tangle with Hitler's Wehrmacht. Though unquestionably sympathetic to the allies, the Swiss were determined to maintain their neutrality. If that meant making some economic concessions to Germany in order to keep the Nazis from overrunning the country, the Swiss were willing, reluctantly, to do that. It's easier to second-guess that decision from half a century's distance than it must have been at the time, when national-socialist armies dominated the continent and liberation was still a distant dream.
As other reviewers have noted, Halbrook is clearly sympathetic, not only to the Swiss nation generally, but specifically to its armed-citizenry approach to national defense. With Switzerland being so greatly maligned in recent years, it's not surprising that voices have been raised in its defense as well. While not perhaps perfect, 'Target Switzerland' is a fascinating and enlightening explanation of the dilemma in which Switzerland found itself in the 1930s and 40s, and why and how that nation chose to do the things it did.
David and Goliath.......2001-01-02
I had never given much thought to the Swiss experience in the Second World War. About the only current material I had seen on Switzerland tended to be critical of it for staying neutral and maintaining a certain level of commercial cooperation with Hitler and his allies. Jean Ziegler's THE SWISS, THE GOLD AND THE DEAD, is an example of contemporary Swiss bashing.
Halbrook's book provides a well-written, thorougly researched antidote. He describes how a polyglot republic with a population of only 4 million could defend its territory while surrounded by 120 million Nazis and Fascists devoted to Hitler's and Mussolini's dreams of conquest.
Switzerland placed an unprecedented one-fifth of its population under arms in the process. That didn't leave enough people for agriculture so the Swiss were hungry throughout most of the war, and cold. German coal heated most of their homes.
Yet, when Luftwaffe aircraft invaded Swiss airspace they came under attack and several were shot down. It is interesting to compare the Swiss response to that of the Great Powers and their policy of Appeasement.
I enjoyed this book and came away with a new found respect for the Swiss and their determination to keep the Holocaust off of their soil.
Good intention - unfortunately not very correct historically.......2000-06-19
Unfortunately the myth of a armed and well motivated Swiss army as a major deterrent for the German forces to invade Switzerland is still holding up and this book does not really contribute to give a more balances account on the reasons why Switzerland wasnt invaded.
New information made available in the last months from the archives of the German secret service during WWII shows that the Germans had very precise and detailed knowlege about the organization of the Swiss army, it's units, orders and fortifications. Unfortunately a large number of Swiss did in fact spy for the Germans during WWII which resulted also in more than a dozen executions during this period.
All in all are we still waiting for a book that really puts Switzerland in its place... Between exagerated criticism accusing Switzerland of collaboration with Germany and the exagerated glorification of the role of the Swiss army.
The way the author insists in the fact that Swiss men keep their weapon at home makes me wonder if this isnt a semi-hidden attempt to justify the legal right to own guns in the USA. He seems to forget that the reason why Swiss soldiers keep their weapons at home is that we do not have any professional army... We have a milita system and therefore need the soldiers to be mobilized within hours and days. Therefore his personal equipment must be available at home. Its nothing more than that.
A must read for the ex-patriot living in Switzerland.......1999-11-20
It provides insight into the current Swiss mentality and shows how close the Swiss came to being swallowed up by the Germans.
The book is a bit technical and tends to focus on the same theme throughout , which at times is somewhat laborious.
Overall, a good read and very educational.

Basic Concepts of Synthetic Differential Geometry (Texts in the Mathematical Sciences)
R. Lavendhomme Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 079233941X |
Book Description
Starting at an introductory level, the book leads rapidly to important and often new results in synthetic differential geometry. From rudimentary analysis the book moves to such important results as: a new proof of De Rham's theorem; the synthetic view of global action, going as far as the Weil characteristic homomorphism; the systematic account of structured Lie objects, such as Riemannian, symplectic, or Poisson Lie objects; the view of global Lie algebras as Lie algebras of a Lie group in the synthetic sense; and lastly the synthetic construction of symplectic structure on the cotangent bundle in general. Thus while the book is limited to a naive point of view developing synthetic differential geometry as a theory in itself, the author nevertheless treats somewhat advanced topics, which are classic in classical differential geometry but new in the synthetic context.Customer Reviews:

A fantastic read (or listen) and it's all true.
By the way, the beautiful girl Tommy fell in love with, Rosa, was a Polish girl, not a Russian like the Amazon book rview says. To call her a Russian in light of what happens at the end of the book is an outrageous error.
A FULFILLING READING EXPERIENCE.......2002-06-05
A unique war memoir.......2002-04-02
The accounts of these battle scenes expertly evoke the sights and sounds of air battle. Flak barrages, numbing cold, hurtling fighter planes trying to shoot Lamore out of the sky; it really feels that personal. We feel the relief of the arrival of American air cover, we are heartened by the sight of safe haven, and we are awed by the courage it took to fight off the sheer exhaustion and fear, just to get back up in the air and do it all again.
When Lamore's plane was downed by a freak accident over France, he was sheltered by local people, evaded Nazi search parties and was recruited by the French Resistance. His training in munitions made him valuable in sabotage operations, and for a while he lived an dangerous and exciting undercover life.
His sudden betrayal to the Gestapo led him to the hell-on-earth of the Nazi prison camps. The physical and psychological tortures and a dipththeria epidemic took their toll, but Lamore survived with his spirit intact, finally escaping from a death-camp on the German-Polish border. Luckily, he encountered the advancing Russian Army, and joined them as they pushed the Germans back towards Berlin. He found he was traveling with a Mongolian Terror-Troop unit. It is not often that Americans can read of the Russians' contribution to winning the war, let alone the Mongolians', and these passages are memorable. I found myself wondering what it was that made Mongolian fighting methods seem even more barbaric than the Europeans'. Was it just the context of European soil? Or some holdover from the 'chivalry' of classic European-style warfare? Were they more likely to kill you than any other soldier? Whatever it was, they scared the hell out of the Germans.
One Man's War contains another unique twist - a love story in the midst of horror. The Russian unit liberates a women's prison camp, where unspeakable crimes have been committed. Among the freed prisoners is a Polish woman, Rosa, who speaks English. She and Lamore fall in love, comforting and healing each other as they continue onwards with the Mongolian unit.
Eventually, the cease-fire is announced and Lamore makes contact with British troops. He and his beloved Rosa make their way to Paris, where Lamore's dream of bringing her to the States is dashed. Rosa knows she must return to Poland to find her family. Lamore has to let her go, with just a ring to remember her by.
The final episode in the book is also the final straw. Lamore is ordered to return to the death camp from which he escaped, to help the Red Cross document the slaughter that happened there shortly after Lamore's got away. The sight and smell of the place, the memories and nightmares it evokes, push Lamore over the edge into deep despair and fatigue, and he is shipped back to the States.
The sad, but essential, message of this superb story is the horrific toll that war takes, even on the victors. Here, in this book, we witness the worst depravities of which we are capable, the despair and the clawing fear, the paralyzing exhaustion. But also, the hope that even in the midst of the hell we create for ourselves, there is redemption in love, even if only for a while. Lamore was deeply affected, as any sane person would be, by his experiences, but around his neck until he died in 1997 hung the ring that Rosa gave him in Paris.
One Man's War is a finely-written book. Congratulations to Dan A. Baker for capturing Tommy Lamore's unique story so brilliantly, and bringing it so vividly to life.
