Book Description

Native people all over the world have always known that our Earth has places of power. These places of power are also places of beauty and of wisdom. They can be found all over the Earth, even in your own backyard. Michael DeMunn reveals how, when you find a place of power, the Earth speaks to the open heart within you. Young artist Noah Buchanan's remarkable oil paintings capture the magic of nature and the reverence of native traditions.

          4 out of 5 stars NOAH'S NICHE.......2001-08-21

Josh Greenfeld writes of his multiply challenged son, Noah. Born 7/1/66, Noah never really mastered verbal communication, his toileting remained hit or miss and he could not really be engaged in any social activity. Noah's older brother, Karl (b. 11/64) is, in the author's word, "wonderfully unremarkable," a normal foil to Noah's challenges. Karl understandably wants a normal, healthy brother and vacillated between anger at Noah and affection for Noah. In one poignant entry, Karl, then 6, tells Josh not to institutionalize Noah because he loves Noah.

The Greenfelds leave the suburb of Croton, New York for Southern California in search of a helpful program for Noah. Josh, a screenwriter and his wife, Foumi, also a writer find their niche in California and Karl forges out a group of friends. Noah endures the gamut of programs from operational conditioning to short term instituitionalization, which is outlined in "A Client Called Noah." Irate over the poor treatment Noah went through, the Greenfelds have their son removed from the institution and a round of searches begins anew.

Prior to this drastic decision, Foumi begins an after school program for developmentally delayed children in their community and Noah is one of their pupils.

This book covers the years 1972 - 1977 when Noah was nearly 6 until he had just turned 10. The time period shows the woefully inadequate plans and the overall lack of knowledge in austism with multiple challenges.

5 out of 5 stars Answer to above question.......2001-06-04

I recently read an update on this family, I think it was from the last 90's. Josh had health problems and they had to institutionalize Noah. The older son,Karl, became a writer.

I've only read the first book, it was incredible and moving. It's sad that there isn't a "good" resolution to this story but it's well written and should give peace to parents of handicapped children, there is no perfect answer,no perfect parenting, people can only do the best that they can.

I'm also grateful to Josh Greenfeld for writing such an honest and moving book.

Would really like to know how this family has survived, can't imagine what their lives were like! the author couldn't have revealed it better although many of us will never have been there. I see so much courage, faith, and love coming from those pages. Would like to know how Noah is doing now. Would like to contact Josh, he's a saint !

                  Book Description

Maneuvers takes readers on a global tour of the sprawling process called "militarization." With her incisive verve and moxie, eminent feminist Cynthia Enloe shows that the people who become militarized are not just the obvious ones--executives and factory floor workers who make fighter planes, land mines, and intercontinental missiles. They are also the employees of food companies, toy companies, clothing companies, film studios, stock brokerages, and advertising agencies. Militarization is never gender-neutral, Enloe claims: It is a personal and political transformation that relies on ideas about femininity and masculinity. Films that equate action with war, condoms that are designed with a camouflage pattern, fashions that celebrate brass buttons and epaulettes, tomato soup that contains pasta shaped like Star Wars weapons--all of these contribute to militaristic values that mold our culture in both war and peace.
Presenting new and groundbreaking material that builds on Enloe's acclaimed work in Does Khaki Become You? and Bananas, Beaches, and Bases, Maneuvers takes an international look at the politics of masculinity, nationalism, and globalization. Enloe ranges widely from Japan to Korea, Serbia, Kosovo, Rwanda, Britain, Israel, the United States, and many points in between. She covers a broad variety of subjects: gays in the military, the history of "camp followers," the politics of women who have sexually serviced male soldiers, married life in the military, military nurses, and the recruitment of women into the military. One chapter titled "When Soldiers Rape" explores the many facets of the issue in countries such as Chile, the Philippines, Okinawa, Rwanda, and the United States.
Enloe outlines the dilemmas feminists around the globe face in trying to craft theories and strategies that support militarized women, locally and internationally, without unwittingly being militarized themselves. She explores the complicated militarized experiences of women as prostitutes, as rape victims, as mothers, as wives, as nurses, and as feminist activists, and she uncovers the "maneuvers" that military officials and their civilian supporters have made in order to ensure that each of these groups of women feel special and separate.

                  Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars The true "feminist agenda".......2001-01-01

Cynthia Enloe is the author most quoted by opponants of women in the armed forces, because she presents the real Feminist viewpoint, which is staunchly anti-war and ambivelant toward the military. Enloe's arguments, supported by N.O.W., are coopted by "anti-feminist" foes of servicewomen as proof of their own contention that women have no place in the military. Paradoxically, after quoting Enloe, those same crusaders then lambast a so-called "feminist lobby" for promoting gender integration in combat operations. No doubt they confuse Feminism with some "politically-correct" positions of Congressional military panels, which are, ironically, often ignored or opposed by N.O.W. But Enloe's books go much further than simply stating Feminism's pacifist ideals. In "Maneuvers", she accuses the military of deliberate victimization of women worldwide. She makes a number of good points concerning the cruelties of war toward civilian women, but her antimilitary bias shows and is sometimes rather venomous. She gives no thought whatsoever to the conditions which make warfare an unpleasant reality and the armed forces a necessity. Nor has she any real concern for American military women or their reasons for wanting to serve. By relating selected incidents of harassment or violence against servicewomen, she presents a negative and mostly false impression of the American military's widespread and willful victimization of its female members. Read "Maneuvers" for the Feminist counter of Brian Mitchell's "Flirting With Disaster", but don't expect balance in the views of either author.

4 out of 5 stars Important feminist study on militarisation.......2000-10-14

Cynthia Enloe adds to her series of writings looking at the effects of militarisation on women's lives - from the laundresses, camp followers, comfort women and sex workers to feminist military personnel and those who fight the home front.

Like Jan Jindy Pettman's "Worlding Women - a feminist international politics", Enloe's latest book seeks to look at international relations from a gendered perspective - and succeeds admirably.

The author relies a lot on secondary sources (citing a lot of newspaper stories), but weaves together the strands of militarisation on women's lives in a compelling and readable style. The book is full of fascinating anecdotes that illustrate the broader themes of the multifacted impact of contemporary militarisation (I particularly enjoyed the discussion on why British military officers from all services and US Air Force and Navy officers are allowed to carry umbrellas, but they are fobidden as too girlie for the US Marines and US Army! )

                    4 out of 5 stars For anyone who's done a history project.............2000-07-12

This is one of the greatest books I have bought. It's a bit different than most of the others in my collection. It's a collection of the front pages of some of the greatest events to happen in the last century. The pages in the book are smaller than what they were originally, which can make some of the print hard to read, but with larger events, it's worth reading the article.

Events that happened decades ago suddenly lose their historical treatment and for possibly the first time, the 21st century person can discover the emotions and reactions that everyday people felt when it took place. It definitely gives a new perspective on things some people have only heard about from history teachers. At the same time, it teaches about events that some people may not even know about, such as whom Von Hindenburg was (the president of Germany previous to Hitler). Stories often relate to later pages and for some reason, the book has a great liking of boxing, almost every year's heavyweight champion is listed.

I also noticed that certain pages (mostly more recent ones) do not contain such "Major Events". For example, Clinton being sworn in for his second term. Many presidents have been sworn in twice. Clinton (at the time) hadn't even proven what he would and could do. It was not an important event at the time and won't be recorded in most history books. He did great things, but his being sworn in a second time isnt't on top.

Another thing that bothered is the years the book contains, from 1900 to 1997. Ninety-seven years? Why not just make it a hundred? I later found out that The New York Times did an updated version... the very next year. It was an obvious way to get money cheaply, which makes me feel anger towards the Times, hence the four stars. However, the book is still an excellent buy and will continue to entertain as long as the binding holds. I recommend the updated version though.

4 out of 5 stars A great romp through history.......1999-08-25

I read this book at my friends house, and practically cried from reading the Challenger explosion. A great history lesson of the 20th century. It would be nice if it had page one of every day, though that might be a bit too huge. Still, it seemed to have even slightly major events. Excellent for the coffee table!

                      4 out of 5 stars Thank You.......2007-08-26

I for one enjoyed this book a lot ! I did not feel she was putting any one down and it was just the way she saw things. She had to be doing something right to last with them for thirty three years. Only John carter knows why he felt she had to be let go and I don't fault him for that either. I just really enjoyed the little inside story's that only she could tell. It was a lot better read than" I Was there When It Happened" I think any Cash-Carter fan would enjoy this book and hope life goes well for Peggy Knight. Marcia

5 out of 5 stars Thank you Peggy for a heartwarming tribute. Loved your book........2006-12-21

I think both E. Northrop's and Marcella Jessup's one-star ratings of this book are way off base, and they both miss the point entirely of what this book is all about. I found Peggy's story heartwarming and spiritual, and the negative criticisms of those two morons really makes my blood boil, especially the disgusting comment about Peggy wanting all the money. That reviewer should not judge other people by her own rotten set of standards. Obviously, there's not much substance to either of these idiots, and clearly each one has the mentality of a grape. I believe every word Peggy says. She is a good person. If she were not, John would have fired her years ago. But she was there for 33 years. She loved John and June, and they loved her. The person who triggered her termination was John Carter, and nobody else. And I have my own thoughts about that one. As for all the children of Cash/Carter, I do not feel there is any animosity written here about any of them, only the truth. And sometimes the truth is not pretty. But the truth IS the truth, so I say to those two reviewers, GET REAL. I deeply felt Peggy's pain in her final chapters, and haven't stopped crying since I read her book. Thank you, Peggy, for sharing your personal stories with us. Your book is a treasure.

If you are Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash fans you will enjoy this book. I was a fan before, but after finishing this book I am an even bigger fan. Wonderful contributions were made by these two and their family from beginning to end. I do not understand the negative reviews I had previously read. As the saying goes, "One person's rags may be another's treasure. What one may perceive as oddities and quirks, another may consider the most loving colorful character traits. I feel this is how the author saw these people and loved them.
The book is an easy read. I finished it in two enjoyable days.

I can't understand how someone who lived with the Cash's 33 yrs.and put down just about everyone, except June, Johnny, Maybelle and expecially herself. You would think she was the queen of sheba. The book is more about her then the Cash family. I detected she didn't like the kids at all. All she could brag about was the money they would give her or prized posessions. How they bought her stuff all the time. I could see why John Carter Cash wanted her out of the house. She probably expected to get the whole Cash fortune.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Believe The Low Rating!.......2006-04-07

I bought this book at a used bookstore and when I started reading it, I couldn't put it down for two days, until I eventually finished it. I highly disagree with the person who rated this book one star. I think that Peggy Knight showed enormous respect for Mother Maybelle, June, and Johnny. She talked about how good they were. How they were always willing to talk to fans and how they never wanted to see anyone hurting (physically or for money). She tells some great stories and I read things in here that I would never have read otherwise. One being that June loved to drive her cars fast (130 mph!) This is a great book. I've read several books on Johnny and June, and this one is one of, if not, the best.

                        Book Description

Next to nothing has been written about the U-boat war in the Indian Ocean. This is the story of a forgotten campaign. The battle began in August 1943, when a German submarine arrived in the Malaysian harbour of Georgetown. In total, nearly fourty U-boats were assigned to penetrate the Indian Ocean, serving alongside troops of the occupying Imperial Japanese forces. The Japanese allowed U-boats to use Malaysia as an operational station. From that base, they mixed with Japanese forces on a hitherto unseen scale: a move which spread the U-boat war throughout the vast Indian Ocean and into the Pacific. Success in this theatre of war held a real chance to swing the tide of battle in North Africa in favour of Rommel, but the Germans essentially did too little too late. The joint action also gave U-boats the opportunity to penetrate the Pacific Ocean for the first time, attacking shipping off the Australian coast and hunting off New Zealand. Plans were even afoot for an assault on American supply lines. The cooperation' also brought into stark relief the fundamental differences of German and Japanese war aims. After the crews of Italian supply submarines joined the Germans and Japanese, relations between the fighting men of the three main Axis powers were often brutal and almost constantly turbulent. Stories of U-boats laden with gold and treasure stem almost exlusively from boats destined to and returning from Japanese-controlled Malaysia, laden with material exchanged between the two major partners of the Triple Axis Alliance.

                          Book Description

In Garbage Wars, the sociologist David Pellow describes the politics of garbage in Chicago. He shows how garbage affects residents in vulnerable communities and poses health risks to those who dispose of it. He follows the trash, the pollution, the hazards, and the people who encountered them in the period 1880-2000. What unfolds is a tug of war among social movements, government, and industry over how we manage our waste, who benefits, and who pays the costs.

Studies demonstrate that minority and low-income communities bear a disproportionate burden of environmental hazards. Pellow analyzes how and why environmental inequalities are created. He also explains how class and racial politics have influenced the waste industry throughout the history of Chicago and the United States. After examining the roles of social movements and workers in defining, resisting, and shaping garbage disposal in the United States, he concludes that some environmental groups and people of color have actually contributed to environmental inequality.

By highlighting conflicts over waste dumping, incineration, landfills, and recycling, Pellow provides a historical view of the garbage industry throughout the life cycle of waste. Although his focus is on Chicago, he places the trends and conflicts in a broader context, describing how communities throughout the United States have resisted the waste industry's efforts to locate hazardous facilities in their backyards. The book closes with suggestions for how communities can work more effectively for environmental justice and safe, sustainable waste management.

Can we prevent the destruction of the world's tropical forests? In the fire-scarred hills of Costa Rica, award-winning science writer William Allen found a remarkable answer: we can not only prevent their destruction--we can bring them back to their former glory. In Green Phoenix, Allen tells the gripping story of a large group of Costa Rican and American scientists and volunteers who set out to save the tropical forests in the northwestern section of the country. It was an area badly damaged by the fires of ranchers and small farmers; in many places a few strands of forest strung across a charred landscape. Despite the widely held belief that tropical forests, once lost, are lost forever, the team led by the dynamic Daniel Janzen from the University of Pennsylvania moved relentlessly ahead, taking a broad array of political, ecological, and social steps necessary for restoration. They began with 39 square miles and, by 2000, they had stitched together and revived some 463 square miles of land and another 290 of marine area. Today this region is known as the Guanacaste Conservation Area, a fabulously rich landscape of dry forest, cloud forest, and rain forest that gives life to some 235,000 species of plants and animals. It may be the greatest environmental success of our time, a prime example of how extensive devastation can be halted and reversed. This is an inspiring story, and in recounting it, Allen writes with vivid power. He creates lasting images of pristine beaches and dense forest and captures the heroics and skill of the scientific teams, especially the larger-than-life personality of the maverick ecologist Daniel Janzen. It is a book everyone concerned about the environment will want to own.

4 out of 5 stars Hope for the forest, the people, and biodiversity.......2007-03-31

I have the greatest respect and admiration for Dan Janzen and have supported the Rincon Rainforest project before seeing this book. This book is a good explanation for why the Guanacaste Conservation Area in Costa Rica may be the key to all successful tropical forest conservation projects.

The book also describes the life work of one of the most important conservation biologist of all time and all of those who have been pushed, coereced, reluctantly persuaded and inspired to do this most significant project. If you are discouraged in any way about the fate of the diverse tropical forests you should read this book. It truely is an inspiration.

4 out of 5 stars Good case study of an important conservation project.......2006-04-21

Without duplicating the book description, I'll just explain why I would recommend this book to anyone interested in conservation.

Although the creation of Guanacaste Conservation Area -- which combines pre-existing national parks and added land between and around them, along with a marine sector -- is unique in representing the world's only large-scale tropical forest restoration project, the story illustrates elements common to nature conservation projects in general. These include the importance of understanding the local ecology (in this case, especially forest succession and the necessity of controlling fires); political aspects, both local and national (Costa Rican president, parks service, etc.); how money is raised and land purchased or otherwise secured; and ways of involving people from the local area in conservation and the importance of that.

I have just returned from Guanacaste and was impressed by the program that trains local people as "parataxonomists" to help with the huge task of identifying and cataloguing the area's many species. Another program gives instruction on natural history to children in local schools. The result has been an important cultural shift toward appreciating nature and the many benefits it provides.

The writing is sometimes long-winded and ponderous, but the careful recounting of details was worthwhile, and the integration of interesting snippets of tropical biology and anectodes of the people involved made it an enjoyable read.

Of particular interest as well was the recounting of the reaction to the revolutionary suggestion that tropical forest can indeed be restored on land taken out of agriculture, an assertion that initially met with skepticism and alarm from conservation organizations, as it conflicted with the conservation message that a tropical forest, once cut down, can "never" regenerate.

In this end, this is a great and stirring conservation success story. The book illustrates how much hard work that entailed on the part of many dedicated people.

                                5 out of 5 stars RE-CREATION.......2005-07-12

Author William Allen takes you to a world you have truly never seen: to the remarkable life that teems in the forests, far beyond Costa Rica's cities and towns. A powerful saga of courage, leadership and stewardship, this epic tale of a hardy (and sometimes foolhardy) group of scientists who feel compelled to fight the destruction a fragile community reads like a swashbuckling romance with Mother Earth! Another book I enjoyed immensely along with this one before visiting the country, was the history "Costa Rica The Last Country The Gods Made." It came out almost exactly ten years before this one and has an elegant literary flair, providing a very satsifying blend of scholarship and imagination.

5 out of 5 stars Deforestation? How about rainforest restoration!?!.......2002-01-31

How often have you've heard the tales of gloom and doom regarding the deforestation of the tropics? Undoubtedly, the numbers are grim and the outlook for many forests is not good. This is why this story, wonderfully told by William Allen, a science writer at the ST. LOUIS DISPATCH, is particularly refreshing and guardedly optimistic.

Allen craftily weaves anecdote with history, real people with events to present a story that tells how a relatively small park in NW Costa Rica (Guanacaste National Park) developed into the Guanacaste Conservation Area, some 10 times larger than its original size. But the story is not limited to the success in creating a larger park. Rather, the author depicts the efforts of a determined group of Costa Rican and foreign scientists (led by Daniel Janzen) as they attempt to reverse the effects of deforestation and actually bring a substantial area back to some semblance of its original state.

The story delves quite a bit into Janzen's personality and raises the issue of a foreigner's role in a project such as this. Would it succeed without him? Just what would it take to restore non-virgin forest? Is this an idea that might work elsewhere? Just a few of the intriguing questions dealt with in this book.

I particularly enjoyed the beginning of each chapter, where the author introduces an anecdote upon which the rest of chapter usually builds. The anecdotal information is highly entertaining of itself, and when used as metafor, it is easier to remember the larger points made.

If you're into eco-whatever, this is great stuff...
