Single parenting can be overwhelming and highly stressful, and single parents have relatively few written guides at their disposal to help them through the challenges. Positive Discipline for Single Parents is one of the best. Like all of Jane Nelsen's books (Positive Discipline: The First Three Years, Positive Discipline A-Z, and others), Positive Discipline for Single Parents is as much about general positive parenting skills as it is about the smaller subset of discipline. Nelson and her assorted coauthors write books that focus on raising children with nonpunitive discipline, through clear communication techniques and child-positive approaches to problem solving. Nelson's parenting recommendations incorporate understanding misbehavior; encouragement, praise, trust, and respect for children; the use of firm, wise limits; and allowing and providing for natural and logical consequences for misbehavior. In Positive Discipline for Single Parents, Nelson and her collaborators deal with these issues and more, including ways to face the challenges presented by the children's other parent, and how to help your child accept your dating and sex life. They provide solutions, solace, and respite for parents trying to raise kids on their own without losing their minds. --Ericka Lutz

5 out of 5 stars Great Help for a Struggling Single Mom.......2005-09-07

I purchased the book to assist my daughter in raising my grandson and to better acclimate us all to our precious new family member. I found the book very enlightening and straight to the point of the tools needed for a single parent and to hopefully adjust to yet a even more fruitful life. It equipped our family with essential info to help raise a strong child but also it helped us in strengthening our daughter and our resolve to make it as workable as possible, especially with the statistics stating otherwise. I know my grandson and our family will be the greatest recipients.

2 out of 5 stars No real useful information in this book........2003-09-03

This book is weak on real ideas. Parenting is parenting and nothing in this book should be new information to any single parent or any parent. A better book is, How to Behave So your Children Will, Too! By Sal Severe. Just read the chapter on divorce with a grain of salt. It is short anyway.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for stressed single moms!.......2003-05-15

I borrowed this book from the library and loved it so much that I decided I needed to make it a part of my own library at home. So many times as single parents we are stressed beyond belief by the world that we forget that it is just as hard on the children as well as ourselves. This book helps single parents to think through some of the traps of parenting that we fall into. It has had many wonderful effects on my four year old son. It takes some time to get out of the normal sequence, but once you do you will see that it really makes a difference.

4 out of 5 stars mostly for divorced parents.......1999-09-21

I liked the book, but I was disapointed to find out that it was written mostly for divorced people. It should be mentioned in the title or sub-title.

5 out of 5 stars Torture (For when all else fails).......1999-09-02

I found Jane Nelsen's book (POSITIVE DISCIPLINE..) to be very informative, but somewhat lacking in the variety of disciplines put forth. There are many ways to discipline your child all of which are positive if they achieve the said goal. Granted, if you want a spoiled brat that runs all over you, the ideas listed in Nelsen's book probally work very well. On the other hand, if you want a child who loves and respects you because they fear you, I would recommend you disciline your child in other ways.

    Book Description

In the early stages of the Second World War, the vast crescent of British-ruled territories stretching from India to Singapore appeared as a massive Allied asset. It provided scores of soldiers and great quantities of raw materials and helped present a seemingly impregnable global defense against the Axis. Yet, within a few weeks in 1941-42, a Japanese invasion had destroyed all this, sweeping suddenly and decisively through south and southeast Asia to the Indian frontier, and provoking the extraordinary revolutionary struggles which would mark the beginning of the end of British dominion in the East and the rise of today's Asian world.

More than a military history, this gripping account of groundbreaking battles and guerrilla campaigns creates a panoramic view of British Asia as it was ravaged by warfare, nationalist insurgency, disease, and famine. It breathes life into the armies of soldiers, civilians, laborers, businessmen, comfort women, doctors, and nurses who confronted the daily brutalities of a combat zone which extended from metropolitan cities to remote jungles, from tropical plantations to the Himalayas. Drawing upon a vast range of Indian, Burmese, Chinese, and Malay as well as British, American, and Japanese voices, the authors make vivid one of the central dramas of the twentieth century: the birth of modern south and southeast Asia and the death of British rule.

5 out of 5 stars The Agony of Retreat.......2007-10-03

"Forgotten Armies: The Fall of British Asia"

The War in Vietnam was intensified in part because of the protests, including self-immolation, of Buddhist monks. In l963, a 67-year-old Buddhist Monk, Thich Quang Duc set himself on fire at a busy interchange in Saigon, then the capital of South Vietnam. Duc was protesting the repressive measures of the US-backed Thieu regime. For the next twelve years, Vietnam occupied the attention of four American Presidencies and cost the nation billions and 60,000 lives.

Today, religious figures are protesting the repressive military regime in Burma. Burma, or "Myanmar" as its leaders prefer to call it (although the U.S refuses to recognize the name) has been under the control of military strongmen for years.

Aung San Suu Kyi is the daughter of Aung San, a nationalist hero who was assassinated by a rival in 1947, one year before Burma gained its independence. In 1988, during a visit from the UK, where she lived with her husband, she emerged as a political opposition leader. The following year she was placed under house arrest, where she has remained, on and off, for 12 of the last 18 years. In 1991, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. She is currently incarcerated in one of Burma's notorious political prisons.
With international sanctions and the attention of the world's press focused on it, the former British colony and scene of one of the Second World War's most intense battles has once again come to the forefront of world politics.
In their excellent history "Forgotten Armies: The Fall of British Asia 1941-1945," Christopher Bayly and Tim Harper focus on the shameful British flight from Singapore and the political and human losses in Burma, Malaysia, India, and the rest of British Southeast Asia. Drawing on a wealth of sources including letters, diaries and records from the Japanese as well as British, they paint a discouraging picture of an empire on the brink of extinction.
They provide a detailed narrative of the flood of humanity...some say 600,000 strong...that was propelled through Asia by the advancing Japanese (or, in some cases, merely the rumor of the enemy) The Fall of Singapore was the nadir of the British Empire. Racism, elitism, ignorance, incompetence and plain stubbornness contributed to its demise.
`From the moment the first bomb fell on Rangoon on 13 December 1941 there began an exodus from Burma of the Indian, Anglo-Indian and Anglo-Burmese population which was at the time the largest mass migration in history. By the autumn of 1942 in the region of 600,000 people had fled from Burma into India by land and sea. As many as 80,000 may have perished of disease, exhaustion, or malnutrition." (Forgotten Armies: P. 167)

"Gin-swilling Sahibs" decided to destroy the Singapore compound's supply of booze before the enemy could get to it, and drank themselves silly in the process.

How often the mistakes of history are repeated when politicians ignore the past. The same scourges... war, pestilence, famine...that decimated Southeast Asia are threatening Africa, Central Asia, and the Middle East today.

5 out of 5 stars Very detailed history of East Asia in World War II.......2007-10-01

The Fall of British Asia is one of the better analyses of how the British Empire came under strain during the course of World War II. This accurately assesses the effect that the Japanese had on the Crescent of British power and a look at what happened to the British islands of the pacific. Although many colonial groups thought the Japanese would be their key to freedom they quickly realized how wrong they were and this book does a great job of not only showing the colonial side but the British and Japanese sides as well. These authors are two of the best within the field and they deliver another winner here. This is a great introduction to what happened to East Asia during world war II and is a great place to start.

4 out of 5 stars the other side of WWII.......2007-07-08

A gripping account of British incompetency in the Malay peninsula and Singapore, which presages the end of their empire. Puts Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor in context. Provides a good background for understanding the character of Southeast Asia.

    5 out of 5 stars Neglected History.......2007-04-19

This is a well written, fast reading work of the British Crescent. The authors comprehensively cover the actors, the decisions and the politics during the period. This book is not about detailed battle/campaign analysis, but it does offer a number of unknown pearls of information regarding the war, people and politics in general. For those studying guerrilla and or asymetrical war it offers some strategic insight. This is an excellent book that I highly recommend.

3 out of 5 stars A useful work on a genuinely forgotten area of the war.......2006-10-02

The main value of this tome to the general reader is most likely to be the early chapters before the war. This outlines most clearly the nature (arrogance and decadence?) of the British presence in Malaya & Burma. The forgotten armies of the conflict are dealt with very methodically, but this makes for drier reading.

            Book Description

Individuals and groups have long found identity and meaning through religion and its collective expression. In Religion in World History, John C. Super and Briane K. Turley examine the value of religion for interpreting the human experience in the past and present. Through this they explore those elements of religion that best connect it with cultural and political dynamics that have influenced history.
Working within this general framework, Super and Turley bring out three unifying themes:
            · The relationship between formal and informal religious beliefs, how these change through time, and how they are reflected in different cultures
            · The relationship between church and state, from theocracies to the repression of religion
            · The ongoing search for spiritual certainty, and the consequent splintering of core religious beliefs and the development of new ones

                                Book Description

Lydia Spencer LaneÂ's account of her life as a young army bride on the early southwestern frontier is both invaluable history and delightful commentary. As an officerÂ's wife, Lane left her home in Pennsylvania in 1854 to accompany her new husband to his first post in the West—the encampment at Fort Inge, Texas, then in the midst of a yellow-fever epidemic. For the next sixteen years, Lane crossed the Great Plains by wagon seven times, traveled nearly 8,000 miles, raised three children, and became accustomed to tours of duty that required the family to move at least every six months to a different set of military forts, frontier garrisons, and trailside bivouacs across New Mexico and Texas.

First published in 1893 and unavailable for nearly a decade, LaneÂ's narrative manifests a dry wit that lends humor to events that range from the uncomfortable to the terrifying. Through her eyes we see the close-knit social life of an army post, the western frontierÂ's divided response to the American Civil War (including the Confederate invasion of the Mesilla Valley), and the cultures and peoples of the West. As Darlis Miller makes clear in her Introduction, LaneÂ's courage, her sense of humor, her powers of observation, and her obvious love for the western landscape make her an unforgettable narrator, a valuable historian, and a bold exemplar of strength under pressure.

Through her eyes we see the close-knit social life of an army post, the western frontierÂ's divided response to the American Civil War, and the cultures and peoples of the West.

Setting the family historical information for the main character and using southern black vernacular in the beginning, I couldn't help but hear her own voice and not that of her characters. The action in Vietnam was vivid and well informed and I saw the worst of what it could be there. There wasn't much psychological depth to the main character Jeremy entering the war. He immediately was a killer; hard when he went in and when he came out. Jeremy's return to America was also well informed and realistic in his relationship with himself and his wife Sam. This portion seems to be the writer's own story and in the later chapters the writing becomes more poetic with emotional depth. I must say that I read it in a day and finished at 1am so it must have been compelling for me.

Wonderful Work! Pedro Santoni does a great job of making the reader understand the near political impossibility of keeping the power and keeping the peace in Mexico in 1846. Following Parades, his party, and his lust for power, Santoni allows the reader to see the complexities in Mexico during the Mexican War. He also does well in helping the reader to understand the Santa Ana Wild Card. Essential for any true study of the Mexican War.

This book, first published in 1976, is not exactly history--there are no footnotes--and is heavy on sociology, but is quite interesting and balanced. The author has good things to say for Prohibition, and pooh-poohs the notion that Prohibition increased drinking--it clearly did not--or that crime increased because of it. Obviously, however, Prohibition decreased resopect for law. The author points out the same thing can be said for drug laws--and there is merit in what he says. Since I so strongly believe in illegalization of harmful drugs I presume that if I had been an adult in 1915 I might have been for Prohibition!

4 out of 5 stars Digs Deep into Cause and Effect.......2000-10-20

Clark does an incredibly competent job of explaining the feelings of both urban and rural Americans over the last three centuries. He exposes the political depth that was the Prohibition movement. Being a "wet" or a "dry" reminded me of the current struggle between "pro-choice" and "pro-life" factions. The book also does well on introducing the major personalities of the movement. A great first read for anyone interested in Prohibition.

3 out of 5 stars A very thorough history of Prohibition.......2000-04-03

Clark analyzes and critiques Prohibition not as a historical moment, but as a movement, originating in the 16th century. This book is very well researched and a thorough bibliography is included. An interesting aspect that is brought to light is the rural vs. urban issue of 18th and 19th century America. Overall, this text is a very good introduction to the politics of the prohibition movement.
