5 out of 5 stars Plain and simple, high powered and professional!.......2004-10-26

This book is well-written, clearly illustrated, and covers the basics through advanced techniques VERY WELL! The pages are in black and white, with great illustrations, about a page or two for each technique. Plus, the type is larger than normal so it's easier to read.
Absolutely a sanity saver for a new sewer or for someone wanting to advance or refresh their sewing skills.

        Book Description

A fascinating look at the elite SEAL Team Six as told by one of its founding members; a riveting exploration into the military's Special Forces consciousness.

SEAL Team Six is one of the most elite fighting forces in the US military. In this comprehensive history of SEAL Team Six in the 1980s and 1990s, Command Master Chief Dennis Chalker tells of the missions and perils he encountered as a 'plank owner' of this counter terrorist unit.

'A perfect op', in SEAL lingo, is an operation in which a mission is completed without discovery of intervention. Chalker tells of one such 'Perfect Op' when SEALs Team Six successfully penetrated enemy territory, completed their objective and left without leaving any mark of their passage. And it is this kind of incredible, never–before–told detail that makes this a fascinating and unforgettable read.

Chalker has written a first–hand account of military life, which will rivet readers and show everyone just what a special forces unit is all about.

4 out of 5 stars Well written, good read.......2007-07-16

I've really enjoyed reading this book. Contrary to the impression given by the title, it is not an in depth recounting of a single mission. It is really a biography of sorts of the life of a SEAL from his childhood through retirement, touching on the highlights of his career. As with any non-fiction military literature, there are details of missions that must be left out, but it has been done well enough that the impact of the stories has not been sacrificed. This is my third Navy SEAL non-fiction, a genre I will be reading from more and more!

Dennis Chalker says "the greatest challenge offered by the U.S. military [is] to become a Navy SEAL." A former SEAL himself, Chalker tells of his life and times in one of the military's most elite units. Much of One Perfect Op describes the extensive training each SEAL goes through, not only to become a SEAL but to remain one: "Our training had been hard and dangerous for a reason: you train as you fight." And the training certainly was hazardous--Chalker describes how one of his teammates was killed during an exercise. About half the book goes by before Chalker sees his first real combat, during the invasion of Grenada in 1983. His unit was tasked with protecting the island's governor. He also saw action in Panama and on a number of other operations, though he often leaves out the names of places and dates because these remain classified. His career was certainly varied. He was once part of "Red Cell," a special SEAL team whose job was to play the part of terrorists and test the security of naval facilities. At another point, he stormed a hostile beach to help a family escape. His equipment included all the standard SEAL hardware--guns, night-vision goggles, etc.--as well as a baby carrier and pacifier. Richard Marcinko writes the introduction (Chalker served under him), and his fans will easily become Chalker's fans as well. --John Miller

        Book Description

No elite military commando unit since the darkest days of Korea and Vietnam has a more storied history than the U.S. Navy SEALs, a stealth fighting force legendary for its abilities to wage covert war on sea, air, and land. Now former SEAL Command Master Chief Dennis "Snake" Chalker takes us deep inside the celebrated SEAL Team Six for an astonishing, firsthand look at the formation, preparation, and deployment of a crack detachment meticulously trained for an ongoing mission that has become essential to the survival of our nation: counterterrorism.

When Dennis Chalker joined Army Airborne in the early 1970s he was, by his own admission, a fairly typical young man from the Midwest. After his initial tour of duty -- and a brief, unsatisfactory stint as a civilian -- he volunteered to be a candidate for "the Teams," elite Naval Special Forces units known for their "outside the envelope" approach to warfare and their ability to strike any target, no matter how heavily guarded or impossible to reach.

After enduring BUD/S (Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL) training -- the most rigorous selection process ever devised -- Chalker rose rapidly through the ranks and was personally chosen by "Rogue Warrior" Richard Marcinko for a leadership role in Red Cell. Together they would push special operations warfare to a level it had never achieved before.

From the Granada action to electrifying events in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia, Chalker now describes in stunning detail previously classified operations in the war against global terrorism. And at the center of his riveting, compelling, and astonishingly honest account is one remarkable covert mission in which daring, timing, skill, and cunning worked in concert to accomplish what in SEALs parlance is known as a "perfect op": one in which enemy territory is successfully penetrated and the objective achieved without any evidence left behind to indicate that the SEALs were even there.

Never before has a book given readers as spellbinding a look at the detailed inner workings of the U.S. Navy SEALs -- from a mission's planning and preparation to its successful completion. And never has there been a truer, more intimate portrait of the extraordinary brotherhood of warriors who today are on the front lines of the most devastating conflict of our age, the war that America must win.

        1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2002-11-28

I was disappointed with this book. Firstly, all `real' missions with the exception of the Grenada invasion are described only in the vaguest terms, apparently to preserve operational secrets. It's lowers the drama and credibility when Chalker describes a mission without even naming the continent on which it took place. Even harmless details like how many SEALs where on a particular raiding team are absent from the accounts of `real' missions.

The breadth of the book is devoted to describing training missions that Team 6 undertook against U.S. Naval bases to test their security. Playing hide-and-seek with security guards and rent-a-cops in training exercises hardly makes for a riveting read.

Chalker also mentions in only passing his experience at SEAL training, or BUD/S, which in the hands of a real writer would easily be worthy of a full book itself. Predictably, he refuses to shed any light on the controversy that landed his mentor Richard Marcinko in jail.

And this isn't an emotional account. We have no real insight into what makes warriors like Chalker tick or the pressures they face. All we know about life outside the Teams is that they drank and brawled a lot. And, oh yet, he got a divorce. (That's almost the way Chalker described it.)

For a more thoughtful and profound look at what it takes to be a member of the U.S. Special Operations community, take a look at Mike Yon's Danger Close. To learn what it takes to become a SEAL, read The Warrior Elite. For an action-packed thriller, stick with one of Marcinko's books.

3 out of 5 stars Good book, but leaves you wanting more..........2002-11-07

This is a good book regarding how Mr. Chalker got into and lived in the Seals. The drawback to it though is you know from reading the front cover he was part of Seal Team 6 (the Navy's elite counter-terrorist unit), therefore you expect to read more about them. He did offer insights into their lifestyles and how the job forced them to live. However, if you have read a lot of these books, the one thing you will look for them are actual "situations" to read about. Even if you have to change the "names and places", just tell us the story. Obviously with this being a relatively new group, many of the "stories" most likely remain classified. If there are not that many stories, then shame on the government for not utilizing the resources of the best trained units in the world. We all know there are places that they can be used. Mr. Chalker has written a good book that provides insight into his life in service and he should be commended for it.

3 out of 5 stars good stories by one of rogue warrior's 'real team'.......2002-10-08

Well, I thought this book was a good read, and a good account of Chalkers career. I'll have to say the book was less detailed and obviously doesn't have the unique view of things that Marcinko did, but that doesn't lessen Chalkers' accomplishments. It was really cool to get another perspective on formation of Seal Team 6 and Red Cell, and also to compare accounts of Urgent Fury between One Perfect Op and Inside Delta Force.
As far as Inside Delta Force, the books do give the impression that ST6 was built more from the ground up and operating in a more balls to the wall manner than Delta Force, of course that doesn't change the fact that both units are the best in the world at what they do, and it goes without saying that there's alot that the books don't mention about the units' operations.

5 out of 5 stars Another Point of View From Marcinko.......2002-10-06

Dennis is a SEAL with wider scope.
He was one of the paratroopers in 82 airborne.
Then he joined the SEAL, then Team Six and Red Cell.
After that he became a master chief and went back to instruct those tadpoles.

So you can see the Red Cell in his eyes.
Certain details he tried to explain deeper than Marcinko.
And all the tricks and fun they had together.

Besides that, you will also find out his love and devotion to the Team and Teammates.
The valuable experience he tried to show those tadpoles.

He combines The Spirit of an Old Navy Sailor and a Modern Warrior.

Trust me, once you read it, you`ll like it.

1 out of 5 stars great guy - below average book.......2002-08-27

Book lacked detail. Author had some interesting experiences which he talked around but provided no depth. If you want a Seal book to read, try Marcinko's Rogue Warrior or Boehme's First Seal.

              Book Description

What makes something sexy? Why are some things regarded as sacred and others profane? Why do mourners face such difficulty in parting with their beloved’s possessions? Why do we often feel distraught when we lose something, even when the object has little real value?

We spend our lives in a meaningful dialogue with things around us. Sometimes the conversation is loud, as in a collector’s passion for coins or art. More often, the exchange is subtle and muted, even imperceptible. We are surrounded by things, and they affect our emotions and impact our thoughts. The arrival of a dozen flowers from a lover or a letter from a grandchild makes our day; an old photo album or an afghan knitted by a favorite aunt offers comfort when we are troubled.

From exploring what makes something “beautiful” to why we place such value on antiques and artifacts from the past, Objects of Our Desire offers insights, both deep and delightful, into the ways we invest things with meaning and the powerful roles they play in our lives.

Notice the inviting contours of that sofa, the glint of a knife’s edge, the sparkle of a diamond ring. Feel the softness of the pashmina around that woman’s milky shoulders. Look at the majesty of a large jet plane. Take in the somberness of a gravestone. Put on an old pair of shoes. Clutch a warm mug of freshly brewed coffee. Sit on a rocking chair. Feel the sumptuous leather seats of a new car.

We are surrounded by things. We are involved with them, indebted to them. We speak to things and things speak to us. To say that we are interdependent is banal. Let us be courageous. Let us admit it: we are lovers.

                                2 out of 5 stars Hattie McDaniel.......2007-08-09

A biography that was interesting in some spots, long and boring in others. I came away from this one with an "oh, well" kind of feeling. While I appreciated the author's fact based account, I was never able to really "get into" this story. McDaniel came from a life of extreme poverty to become the first Black person to win an Academy Award. The book goes into great detail about McDaniel's life story, her parentage, her work in vaudeville, her work on screen and on radio. We also read about her multiple marriages, her fight with the NAACP and her last days as she fought diabetes and breast cancer. The running theme of this book is courage and perserverance, of which Ms. McDaniel had a alot. I wouldn't recommend this for purchase, best to get it from the library. 2.5 stars.

                                5 out of 5 stars A WONDERFUL READ.......2007-02-14

THIS IS NOT JUST A BIOGRAPHY OF A FASCINATING WOMAN, IT IS ALSO A FASCINATING ACCOUNT OF THE PREJUDICE MS MCDANIEL FACED WITHIN THE MOTION PICTURE INDUSTRY, AND FROM THE NAACP. A FIRST CLASS ACCOUNT OF A WOMAN I FELT I KNEW PERSONALLY AFTER THE LAST PAGE, AND AN EQUALLY WONDERFUL SOURCE OF INFORMATION ABOUT PREJUDICE AND RACIAL PROBLEMS IN ALL ITS FORMS. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT

4 out of 5 stars Her face is on the first class stamp 2006.......2006-06-13

Looking back at Hattie McDaniel's life, I had to question why now? Why recognize her life with a stamp now? I sought out the answers by reading this book. This is a well documented biography written by a historian who is also a very good storyteller. She captures the times that Hattie McDaniel came up in as well as the story of her parents and older siblings. Her accomplishments are meaningful when effectively presented in that context. as Jill Watts has done in this book. Miss McDaniel managed to participate in every form of show business from vaudeville, blues shows, theatre, radio, movies and television. I read this book from cover to cover. The information I read complimented the biography I just finished about Lincoln Perry (Stepin Fetchit).

3 out of 5 stars The Elusive Miss McDaniel's Life.......2006-05-20

This book on one of the most memorable Black performers from the studio period catches some of her vivacity--her mother is said to have given her youngest child a nickel on occasion to just stop singing, dancing and carrying on. The reader can't be sure that Mrs. McDaniel wasn't just trying to find a moment's peace or if she was attempting to dissuade her daughter from setting off on what she regarded as the primrose path. This bio does a good job of detailing her family's path from slavery to her role as one of the most visible representatives of her people to the average American in the '30s and '40s.

Hattie McDaniel's ability to endure as well as her gift for imbuing her often subservient characters with much more edge than audiences were aware of at the time are delineated nicely in this biography. The author is remarkably thorough, mentioning Miss McDaniel's lifelong generosity to others, constant work to educate and make her industry more equitable, and even her participation in midget car races(Oh, where is the film of this?!)as well as her pioneering efforts to represent women, as well as Black Americans, as human beings. There is also some suggestion that Hattie McDaniel may have had to maneuver behind the scenes to maintain her preeminent position, though this is presented as indicative of the actress' savvy understanding of the inner workings of the Hollywood publicity machine.

It's a little dry in parts, since the author, a professor of history, ascribes some conscious social and political motivations to this artist's early work that may be a bit hard to believe. Hattie McDaniel deserves to be recognized for her contributions, but sometimes, I suspect that like most of us, she did what she did in order to keep the wolf from the door. A worthwhile read.

4 out of 5 stars Early Hollywood Trailblazer .......2006-05-15

Imagine an African-American winning the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for the 1939 film "Gone With The Wind." Or even being nominated for that matter. But that's just how moving Hattie McDaniels's portrayal of Mammy was. Especially the sorrowful retelling of events in the Butler household to "Miss Melanie"(Olivia De Havilland), after the tragic death of Bonnie Blue. A scene that always brings tears to my eyes. That's how talented this lady was. And even more surprising, considering the fact that Ms. De Havilland was also nominated in the same category, for her sensitive role of Melanie.

A good window to the plight and many indignities suffered by black actors in Hollywood for decades. Seemingly with the lame excuse of "not wanting to offend the southern audiences, with positive portrayals of blacks on screen." Ms. McDaniel did the very best she could, with the negative material she was consistently offered. But we go deeper into the personal life of Hattie as well. Probably not as deep as this work could have gone, like the supposed lesbian affairs she was rumored to have had. All-in-all, a very good background of the struggle for equality and respect, by blacks in Hollywood. And Hattie McDaniel was at the forefront in trailblazing the way.

FASTEN YOUR SEAT BELTS for a driving tour that traces the British Invasion of 1777 along US Route 4. The leader of the British invasion, General John Burgoyne described this area as "God Forsaken," but he no doubt was frustrated by the stubbornness of its citizens who would not surrender to his invading army. Actually, this area includes some of the most beautiful country in the northeast United States. It's no wonder that its citizens would not give it away.

Ever wish you could have read that historical marker you just passed on the highway?

There are many historical places along the last 100 miles of US Route 4 -- places that have marked histories dating back to three very important years in the United States' struggle for independence: 1775, 1776 and 1777.

This booklet not only covers the places and their markers, it also shows you how you can visit them in a day in your car.

The road trip begins early in the morning in Castleton, VT, historically on May 9, 1775. Throughout the day, it detours from Route 4 several times, including one big detour at the beginning that goes about 40 miles to the north. This detour sets the historical stage for the last 100 miles on US Route 4.

From Castleton, the road trip crosses US Route 4 and heads north on the old military road with stops at the Hubbardton Battlefield and Mount Independence, then up to Crown Point, NY after crossing the bridge over Lake Champlain. The trip turns south to Fort Ticonderoga, then rejoin US Route 4 at Whitehall. It continues south on US Route 4 through Fort Ann, Fort Edward, Fort Miller and Schuylerville following the Hudson River to the Saratoga National Historical Park. From the park, it continues south following the Hudson River through Stillwater, Waterford and Peebles Island until it ends in Albany, historically near the end of 1777.

Although the road trip can be completed in a day, be warned, you could easily spend a week.

The booklet is published by Cyber Haus Learning Centers. It is 106 pages long and includes over 200 color pictures.

                                      Book Description

In recent years, law enforcement has suffered a number of tactical fiascoes. Besides the loss of life and deterioration in public confidence, officers and agencies have been the subject of both civil and criminal sanctions.

Unlike most tactical books, which teach tactics as a "skill set", this book emphasizes an intuitive application of funamental principles. These principles have evolved over centuries of tactical operations and form a body of "sound doctrine".

Heal not only presents a distillation of the more than ninety tactical texts, but provides an insightful and compelling call for rethinking tactics of law enforcement. Assuming no prior experience or understanding of tactical matters, Heal draws from everyday life such as competitive games, driving, or planning a vacation to show how to reconceptualize a difficult situation. Because the fundamental concepts Heal explores apply to all types of emergenices, Sound Doctrine is suitable for not only law enforcement, but firefighters, private security, and other emergency responders.

4 out of 5 stars Sound Doctrine is a sound read.......2006-11-18

Nothing ground breaking, but the author clearly knows what he is talking about. The book is put together very well. Any law enforcement officer should read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent workbook for law enforcement personnel........2004-10-26

I assign Sound Doctrine: A Tactical Primer as the workbook for a Law Enforcement Intelligence course. Law enforcement commanders worry about the seeming disunity in strategic and operational policy and its political ramifications. Tactical officers are concerned with handling the more pragmatic issues, such as the insurgencies of drug trafficking, illicit immigration, terrorist activities, and civil disturbances. Reading Sound Doctrine will help.

Charles Heal clearly defines the problems and limitations associated with current policies for the execution of critical incident missions. In fact, the only thing that is known about these new types of operations is that not much is known in advance. Few principals or rules are in place before a crises occurs, so officers and officials who are strangers are forced to cobble together operating procedures in the midst of a crisis. And because each operation tends to be unique in important ways, these same officials are often forced to define a position and response in haste. Those tasked with the responsibility of crisis management and confronting low intensity conflicts, which are the future of state and local law enforcement, have frequently complained about the inadequacy of the machinery of government in these circumstances. Critically examining Sound Doctrine will help.

The traditional departmental division of responsibility for strategic, operational, and tactical missions, while perhaps sufficient for generating policy and building coalitions, is incompatible with and inhibits the development of a department/agency responsible for coordinating, and directing continuous operations. Implementing Sound Doctrine will help.

"Sound Doctrine" is a text to read over and over. Sid Heal is in an excellent position to balance and compare civilian law enforcement and military tactical thought. Not only does he provide the "how to" of conducting tactical operations but he provides a clear excellent review of the fundamental concepts behind action. The title is accurate. The book covers the basic doctrines necessary to conduct operations against potenital armed adversaries. Each chapter is well organized and direct. It would make an excellent textbook for a basic understanding of tactical operations. I recommend this book not only to law enforcement personnel, but to anyone who also needs a solid grounding in tactical doctrine for employing force.

Sid Heal, a recognized expert in our occupation, has managed to combine the lessons of the military's past into our present occupation-law enforcement. Don't just read the book once, read it several times to grasp the basic principles presented so that they become second nature to you when called upon to act or to command at a crisis or critical incident. Then, have your troops read the book so they, too, will have an understanding of their role in these situations. The book shows the relationship between decision making, the preparation of a mission, and the actions taken to accomplish one's objective and/or goal to resolve the problem encountered. Whether the objective is to handle a crisis or a critical incident, the principles are here. "Sound Doctrine: A Tactical Primer" is a must read, for anyone involved in the decision making process for any crisis and/or critical incident, as it provides a means to accomplish a measured resolution based on "sound doctrine".
