2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-06-02

This book shows you how to add zip to someone else's work. It does not show you how to create your own from scratch. If you are a purist and wish to label your item "handmade by ----", this is not the book for you. Mostly cigar box purses and cheap, boring pre-purchased canvas bags are used. No creative shapes. If you sew, don't bother.

4 out of 5 stars Worth Buying.......2005-09-06

The book is oversized and each purse description is accompanied by a full-page glossy photo. In fact, all of the pages are high gloss and are great for illustrating the finer details of each purse. Almost all of the purses are cigar-box style and very few are made from fabrics. In fact, this book was perfect for a non-sewer because none of the purses require sewing! The purses are perfect for someone who is crafty and imaginative but cannot sew. The purse designs are very inspiring, and are made by using a variety of paints, collages, decopauge, stickers, stamps, photos, handles and hardware. The pictures and accessory ideas really help to get your creative juices flowing. The description of how to make each purse was pretty good as well (though they could have been more specific and detailed). I found the book to be quite helpful and plan to refer to it often - mostly for inspiration and item placement ideas.

The author of Beyond Valor offers a new collection of oral histories from veterans of the Second World War, this time from the Pacific theater. In an introduction, Patrick K. O'Donnell warns, "oral histories are perhaps the best means available to reveal the horrors and pathos of the foxhole." Indeed, several of the accounts he compiles on these pages are grisly, such as the story of Tom Lyons, stabbed in the neck by a Japanese soldier on Guadalcanal. Lyons survived, but only after being heaped on top of a pile of dead bodies. Rumors of his death reached home: "My mother got a check from my insurance company saying I was dead the same day she got a letter from me written by a nurse at a hospital in New Zealand." Combat stories abound, including a firsthand account of Gunnery Sergeant William G. Walsh jumping on a grenade to protect his squad on Iwo Jima, a feat for which he was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. O'Donnell organizes his material chronologically and introduces each chapter to help readers understand the context of the soldiers' individual narratives. For those who enjoy real-life war stories told from the perspective of the men who were there, Into the Rising Sun is hard to beat. --John Miller

    Book Description

"Iwo Jima was a massacre. I never expected anything like that. People were dying left and right...No names should have been used on the flag raisings because we didn't get up there by ourselves. It was the collective actions of a lot of people and there were a lot of Raiders and paratroopers up there with us."

    -- Charles Lindberg, Flag Raiser

Patrick O'Donnell has made a career of uncovering the hidden history of World War II by tracking down and interviewing its most elite troops: the Rangers, Airborne, Marines, and First Special Service Force, forerunners to America's Special Forces. These men saw the worst of the war's action, and most of them have been reluctant to talk about it. With O'Donnell's respectful coaxing, however, they first began telling their stories through www.thedropzone.org, his award-winning Web site. In 2001, veterans of the European Theater told their stories in O'Donnell's first book, Beyond Valor. Now, in Into the Rising Sun, O'Donnell presents scores of veterans' personal accounts, based on over a thousand interviews spanning the past ten years, to tell the story of the brutal Pacific war.

"They were making a lot of noise, talking, yelling to one another, and I heard someone getting beat up on the left. I can still hear the screams. He was begging for mercy. They [the Japanese] were berating him. Later on I found that it was one of my friends, Ken Ritter."

    -- Robert Youngdeer, Guadalcanal

These veterans were often the first in and the last out of every conflict, from Guadalcanal and Burma to the Philippines and the black sands of Iwo Jima. They faced a cruel enemy willing to try anything, including kamikaze flights and human-guided torpedoes. As O'Donnell explains in the Introduction, most of the men in this book were at first reticent to talk. Over the course of the war, they had spearheaded D-Day-sized beach assaults, encountered cannibalism, suffered friendly-fire incidents, and endured torture as pris-oners of war. Heroes among heroes, they include many recipients of the Navy Cross, the Distinguished Service Cross, the Silver Star, and other medals of battlefield valor, but none bragged about it. As one soldier put it, "When somebody gets decorated, it's because a lot of other men died."

By at last telling their stories, these men present an unvarnished look at the war on the ground, a final gift from aging warriors who have already given so much. Only with these accounts can the true horror of the war in the Pacific be fully known. O'Donnell has carefully verified each account by comparing it with official records and interviews, and he intersperses each story with brief commentary. Together with detailed maps of each battle, the veterans' stories in Into the Rising Sun offer nothing less than a complete picture of the war in the Pacific, a ground-level view of some of history's most brutal combat.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting, if a bit limited in scope.......2005-01-29

This is the second of Patrick O'Donnell's books. O'Donnell is a gifted oral historian who's been collecting the recollections of men who were soldiers and served in the Second World War, partially through a website he set up some years ago, and partially through other sources. This compilation shows off O'Donnnell's strengths, and weaknesses (such as they are) and is a good example of his work.

O'Donnell, for whatever reason, is very attached to "elite" infantry units. In his book on the European Theater, this included paratroopers, rangers, and the members of the 1st Special Service Force. In the current book, which covers the Pacific Theater, the distinction between "elite" forces and the regular ones is somewhat more blurry: Army Rangers, paratroopers, and members of Merril's Marauders are the participants from the army, but the author chose to distinguish the Marine Raider and Parachute units from other Marine outfits. This is a weakness as all of these forces were disbanded in 1943-4, and so the book would be rather truncated as far as the Marine Corps went for the last 18 months or so of the war. This (of course) is unacceptable, so the author merely follows former members of these specialized units who were absorbed into other, regular Marine regiments.

The result is that some battles are covered in considerable detail here, while others (notably Saipan and Peleliu) are ignored because the Marines who participated in these campaigns weren't "elite." This includes members of the 1st Marine Division, who were arguably the most experienced in terms of combat against Japanese soldiers. So what's here is rather skewed and somewhat disjointed, but if you accept that, then the material that's here is worthwhile.

I enjoyed this book, within its limitations, and I would recommend it and the others in O'Donnell's series, provided you accept what they are.

4 out of 5 stars Stories about the Pacific War........2004-05-29

A fairly interesting book. O'Donnell lists the campaigns of the elite troops of this theater of command, details the plan of battle, and then gives the oral histories of those who served in those campaigns. Most of the veterans are at the end of their lives, so these oral histories present a heartfelt tribute to the difficulties these soldiers endured during combat. What surprised me most was how these soldiers/veterans got choked up recounting the battles they went through, and the friends they lost. Freedom isn't cheap, and these soldiers are living proof of how America was affected by the battle.
This is a good read. Oral histories are good at describing the personal experiences of soldiers, but they don't put perspective on the actual battle campaigns. If one wants to know more about the War in the Pacific, one needs to read a general history, before reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most honest books about combat in the Pacific War.......2004-01-12

Well, if other reviews don't say it already, this book was one of the more brutally honest books written about war against Japan. Its honest because its brutally politically incorrect. The American soldiers who relates their stories, tell not only of the horrors that the Japanese troops committed but additional horrors of what they did to the Japanese troops. This was no-hold bar combat, where there were no "good guys" or "bad guys" per say. The stories related in this book was all about killing, surviving and living on. In doing so, anything goes and there were no rules. It may be that many general readers may be kind of shock to read so honest account. Some of them may not like the read how the Americans in these pages acted with certain amount of brutality that almost mirror their enemies. But then, what is war after all, right?

5 out of 5 stars A measure of the sacrifices.......2003-08-26

This review is of the Audio CD version of this excellent book. Jeff Riggenbach did a fantastic job reading this text. He managed to give proper emphasis without drowning the material.

Many soldiers are reluctant to talk of their wartime experiences for fear of seeming boastful. O'Donnell got these veterans to open up and tell their stories. They did so that the fallen heroes would get proper credit, not to tell of their own exploits in a grand fashion. Many of the other reviewers have told of the specific episodes relayed in the book, but what struck me was the depth of feeling that these men had many decades after the fact. One soldier tells of looking up the family of a fallen buddy after the war. It was as if he felt driven to tell them of their son's valor and his worth to his fellow soldiers. Another tells of a friend he saw die in combat after having met his wife and been their with him during the arrival of their child. It was a common theme that these men had these experiences with them every day, if only just beneath the surface. I highly recommend it to those who would like to grasp the depth of the sacrifice these individuals made on our behalf.

5 out of 5 stars Experience Battle from your Armchair!.......2003-04-16

I read this book after "Beyond Valor" by the same author and I wasn't disappointed. "Into the Rising Sun" is a collection of first hand accounts of the brave men who fought in the Pacific. The author sets up the accounts with some background material to make more sense to it all. After re-living some of these battle through this book, I started to understand what a living Hell these guys lived through. The intensity of the Japanese soldier was astonishing.

This book has special meaning to me since my father was a Marine fighting the Japanese in the Pacific. He was at Guadalcanal and Okinawa .I now know what a hero he was!

I really enjoyed reading this book on the USS Lexington. My grandfather was a proud marine who served on this amazing war ship. This book brought me great insight on what it was like for him, and others, living and fighting a war on the Blue Ghost during WWII. It was an easy, fast reading book that I found very interesting.

Whether it was helping Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls win three-straight NBA titles in the 1990's or showing up to a book signing in a dress and full makeup, Dennis Rodman has always distinguished himself as one of the great and most polarizing personalities in the sports world. The controversial and flamboyant former basketball star, who recently had a tryout with the Denver Nuggets and has played with the Long Beach Jam of the ABA in hopes of getting another shot at the National Basketball Association, is back in the national spotlight once again with I Should Be Dead Now. The new book from the two-time best-selling author details Rodman's struggles in life since he stopped playing in the NBA, including the breakup of his marriage to movie and TV star Carmen Electra and his problems with alcohol. I Should Be Dead Now is a look at the life of one of America's most recognizable sports stars since the lights of professional basketball stopped shining as brightly, and how Dennis Rodman hopes to make a successful return to the game that made him famous.

5 out of 5 stars Reveals more than I think he intended.......2006-01-23

This is not a book that will fill you with great amounts of unknown knowledge, nor will it require heavy thinking on your part to understand. What you will get out of it is a great deal of amusement. Here are dozens of short, kind of random thoughts, little stories and anecdotes by Dennis Rodman. In summary it is kind of a way to look at his philosophy of life.

It's a life that a lot of us would like to live in a vicarious way, I say vicarious because it appears to be a life that I don't think I could handle. In between the stories of what happened, there's a bit of insight into the way the man thinks. He's lived the life that he says he wanted, yet the desparate urge to get back to the NBA comes through. Born in May of 1961, he's now approaching 45 years old. He has to know that there aren't many players in the NBA that are that old. It will be interested to see what he does in future years.

I found the book a mix of sad, funny, and poignant. All you can say is 'good luck.'

1 out of 5 stars He IS dead........2005-12-23

This clown said all he could say with his first book, back when it mattered, to some people, because winning basketball teams matter, to some people.
Note that it wasn't published by one of the big fat publishers. They don't expect it to sell. So don't be one of the few fools who buy it.

3 out of 5 stars Neither here or there :-l.......2005-11-26

This is a fairly interesting-ish book about one of the best players to have played the sport. However, I wonder why he wrote another book? Surely he doesn't need the money (unless it all went to alcohol). It's interesting to get inside his mind a little and see what he's all about, but it is all jumbled and mismatched and leads nowhere. I like him, but if I had read this first before buying, maybe I wouldn't have bought it. Only for true Rodman fans. Otherwise, skip it.

Dennis Rodman is a Great Basketball Player&truly knows the game inside&out.also a Smarter cat that He often leads on.but this Book is just alot of loose thoughts that never goes anywhere. there are a few interesting moments talking His time in various spots during His Career, but nothing really new.still Dennis Rodman remains one of the most interesting Athletes Ever.

5 out of 5 stars Inside the Mind of the Worm.......2005-11-04

What a fun book! Rodman has always been colorful, but this book allows you to step into his mind, and try to understand where he is coming from when he does all his crazy stuff. Very entertaining- you do not have to be a basketball fan to enjoy this book. His "reality checks" are worth the price of the book.

Since I was a kid, I had always prided myself on my discipline in the things that really mattered-in the weight room, on the court (forget the refs), defense, rebounding, in how I play the game. Off court was my business; but suddenly things had changed. After the motorcycle accident, my agent, Darren Prince, was so worried about my partying that he called in the cavalry, my former bodyguard, Wendell "Big Will" Williams-a six-foot-four-inch, 400-pound black man to whom people, including Dennis Rodman, tend to listen. Wendell was coming out of bodyguard retirement to make sure I did what I was supposed to do when I was supposed to do it. He started out strong at the Radio Music Awards in Las Vegas. It was exactly a week after the Treasures motorcycle crash. Despite my usual protests-"I don't want to do this.

                  Book Description

Conflict is dramatic. In theater, literature, story telling, and news reporting, it is a powerful mechanism that draws attention, heightens the senses and evokes emotion. Schirch argues that peacebuilding has the potential to do just the same.

Examples of peacebuilding often center on the serious, rational negotiations and formal problem-solving efforts in conflict situations. Schirch argues, though, that what truly bonds adversaries and helps achieve peace are the symbolic, non-verbal ritual acts--shaking hands, sharing a meal, showing a photograph of a loved one. Yet these are often overlooked as deliberate components of peace negotiations.

Ritual and Symbol in Peacebuilding underscores the importance of incorporating symbolic tools, including ritual, into traditional approaches to conflict. Ritual assists in solving complex, deep-rooted conflicts, and helps to confirm and transform worldviews, identities, and relationships. With theories and language to explain the symbolic dimensions of conflict, this text will be useful to scholars and practitioners active in the diverse field of peacebuilding.

5 out of 5 stars Lakoff Meet Schirch.......2005-05-20

Within the progressive movement, the term "worldview" is becoming increasingly recognized and valued, thanks to Lakoff's Don't Think of an Elephant and his focus on frames and perspectives. Lakoff identifies a weakness in fact-based movements: they fail to transform entrenched worldviews. Worldviews, Lakoff insists, are rooted in symbols and metaphors and prove intractable if approached by mere facts and figures.

This is where Schirch comes in. In Ritual and Symbol, Schirch advances Lakoff's work by giving peacebuilders tools to understand and transform entrenched and intractable worldviews, identities and relationships--tools invaluable for a broad spectrum of peacebuilders, e.g. activists, artists, mediators, ADR lawyers, diplomats, etc.

While this book is particularly helpful for arts-based peacebuilders, Ritual and Symbol is an essential prerequisite read for anyone poised to effect social change.

5 out of 5 stars Great resource for exploring symbolic aspects .......2005-05-17

As the peacebuilding field grows and professionalizes, there is an increasing body of literature on the subject. There is a great deal of research and writing exploring the material aspect of conflict, from delineating issue-based approaches to works aimed at developing concrete negotiation techniques. There is also a growing body of literature exploring the relational aspects of peacebuilding, focusing on processes of improving patterns of relating. Schirch's book, Ritual and Symbol in Peacebuilding, is one of the few resources for peacebuilders aimed at specificially exploring the symbolic aspects of conflict and peacebuilding.

As such, it is an important addition to any peacebuilder's library. Schirch clearly details what she means by ritual and gives concrete examples of how ritual is used in everyday life- and more specifically, in attempts to transform and heal conflict.

This book serves as a critical resource for those interested in consciously incorporating the symbolic into their concepts of what constitutes peacebuilding. As Schirch develops through specific examples, symbolic approaches to peacebuilding form a necessary component in transforming identities warped and distorted by conflict. I recommend this book highly!

                  5 out of 5 stars Highly recommend!.......2005-05-11

Schirch highlights this oft missed element of peacebuilding. I found the book to be an excellent analysis and exploration of how we need to nurture the space for creative transformation. Very well written! A must read for anyone in the helping professions and relevant for everyone else as well.

                    Book Description

After her record-breaking two year tree sit, Julia Butterfly Hill has ceaslessly continued her efforts to promote sustainability and ecologically-minded ways to save the old-growth redwoods she acted so valiantly to protect. Here she provides her many young fans with what they yearn for most -- her advice on how to promote change and improve the health of the planet, distilled into an essential handbook. This book will be accessible to school-aged children, while accomodating the audience of parents and teachers who look to Julia as an example of how one person can "change the world." Packed with a variety of charts, diagrams, and interesting factoids, the book will be broken down into a series of steps and easy-to-follow lessons. It will be written broadly so as to accommodate all kinds of activism, though its core focus will be on environmental issues.

5 out of 5 stars Envirornmental activism for beginners!.......2006-10-19

Written by the legendary environmental activist Julia Butterfly Hill, "One Makes the Difference" provides a wealth of useful information on how we can work, both individually and collectively, to restore our fragile biosphere. While some of the advise is commonsense (buy organic, recycle, ride a bike), there are many other less obvious hints on how we can minimize our impact on the planet. Whether one's interested in protecting endangered species, cleaning up the air, saving our oceans or stopping the deforesting of the tropics, there is much that readers will learn from this text. Furthermore, Hill's simple writing style makes the book accessible for kids and adults alike. As such, I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in living a more sustainable lifestyle.

4 out of 5 stars The world could be a better place.......2003-08-18

Maybe if there were more people like Julia Butterfly Hill, the world would be a better place. Since her heroic act of sitting a tree called Luna to prevent it from being cut down (along with many other giant sequoia trees), she has been an inspiration to many. This book is filled with the inspiring tales of people who are like Julia Hill, who do care and who have made a difference in our world. It also is packed with information on all sorts of environmental issues from water conservation to the clear-cutting of trees to to the very positive effects of vegetarianism on the environment. It has lists of the things you can do in your everyday life to make a difference. It lets you know that even the smallest things do make a difference. This is a great book for budding activists, anyone seeking inspiration, as well as just for the curious.--Reviewed by Courtney Bronte

                    2 out of 5 stars A nice try, but ultimately a disappointment.......2003-04-04

I must say I found this book to be quite a disappointment, especially after Hill's inspiring "Legacy of Luna". Part of the problem with "One Makes the Difference" is that it's not sure what it wants to be. Is it a handbook for applying environmentalism to everyday life? If it is, it fails. Many strategies (for instance, biodiesel) lack enough detail for the reader to translate them into action. It's also broken down into artificial sections, like "air" and "water" and "land"; in reality many strategies for environmental living benefit more than one of these. A better way to organize would've been into different categories of human action, like transportation, diet, and home-heating/cooling. Humans can compartmentalize; nature cannot.
Another source of frustration with this book was the "inspiring" tales of people who "made a difference". While it *can* be inspiring to read about people who succeeded, I was ultimately left wishing that the author had explained more about *why* these people were successful. Otherwise, the stories feel like nothing more than mere chance amidst the many attempts at environmental activism that fail.
I would suggest this book only to those who are relatively new to the environmental movement.

5 out of 5 stars A practical guide and an inspiration.......2003-03-21

I consider myself environmentally conscious. I use fluorescent bulbs, print office stuff on both sides of each sheet, eat organic food, etc. Still, I haven't thought about a lot of things Julia Hill suggests. Now I use the same styrofoam cup for 2 weeks and I stopped using plastic cuttlery. I knew burghers were not the best food but I didn't know that, by eating one at a fast food restaurant, I destroy rain forest. It is amazing how much stuff we waste without thinking about it and how much we take for granted. As Julia pointed out, we can learn a lot from trips to "3rd world" countries. For example, there are people out there who save every drop of drinking water while we take a shower for an hour. We buy bigger and bigger gasoline-guzzling and air-poluting cars we don't need as status symbols. We act as if our resourses were unlimited.

                    5 out of 5 stars Fascinating Information.......2002-08-22

I bought this book to use in the classroom for a lesson I
was doing in my 12th grade American Government class. It was
great for the students! They could really relate to information.
I was amazed at how eager my students were to make efforts to
help our environment. I admire Ms. Hill and all the efforts she
                    has made in raising awareness!!!
