Book Description

From the mother of champion cyclist Lance Armstrong, winner of six straight Tour de France championships, comes an extraordinary story of the resilience of the human spirit and the remarkable effect of great parenting. Funny, resonant, down-to-earth, and utterly unforgettable, No Mountain High Enough is exhilarating proof that sheer willpower can - and occasionally does - triumph over adversity.

5 out of 5 stars Five Star Mom!.......2005-12-29

Linda Armstrong started out with enough strikes to doom most to a mediocre life - daughter of divorced parents and a drunkard father (stopped drinking when Lance was born), married at 16, mother at 17, expelled from high school for being pregnant, and abused by husband whom she eventually left. Instead, she raised (inspired, cheered, protected, funded, and assisted his early development and becoming a champion, and then added her inner strength to Lance's during a devastating cancer encounter) a world renowned bicycling champion and major force in cancer research and support.

At the same time Linda went on to complete her GED and worked her way up to a high-level position within a large communications firm. It was not all success for Linda, however - she also had to go through two additional failed marriages (a philanderer, and a drunkard), before finally finding her "true love."

After reading the book it is clear that both Lance Armstrong AND his mother, Linda, are very exceptional and inspirational individuals. I wish I had read this book myself before becoming a parent - my approach and perspectives would hopefully have greatly improved.

5 out of 5 stars Dynamos Run in the Armstrong Family.......2005-08-30

I am glad Lance's Mom decided to write her story. After I read It's Not About the Bike, I was inspired and eager to learn how a seemingly super-human came to be. Now I know: his Mom exudes energy, enthusiasm, and optimism without bounds: who could lose with such incredible and selfless support screaming in your ear on each lap of the race.

This is a book that focuses primarily on Linda Armstrong Kelly. Lance plays a pivotal but supporting role in the story. She is honest and forthright about the men in her life; other women have just shriveled and become bitter. She is unabashedly supportive of her son, in spite of his adolescent fixation with speeding and dangerous shenanagans with his pals. And... she raised a smart son who loves and respects his mother, especially shielding her from some of the pranks that would drive many parents to pack their son off to some military academy. The fireballs come to mind as I write this.

She is a mom that celebrates Mother's Day, everyday. Now, if she can figure out a way to bottle and sell her optimism and energy! Enjoy the read.

5 out of 5 stars Never Give Up.......2005-08-12

A very well written book bringing the reader the life of an adoring Mother and her son. Neither would give up on their individual dreams in their respective pursuits of happiness in their lives. Enjoyable, insightful reading start to finish. Many congrats to both, and a special congratualtion to Lance for winning his seventh Tour deFrance.

5 out of 5 stars A book for parents everywhere - even "down under" in NZ.......2000-05-06

I think I am a busy mother - trying to balance careers with young children - but I had no idea how busy it is possible for a parent to be! We have all read the magazine articles, seen the items on television and pondered what life might be like for families with triplets or more, but this enjoyable and easy to read book reveals angles on their experience that would never have occurred to me. I liked the way that both parents' points of view are included and the chatty style which makes this book read more like a conversation with a friend over coffee. I seldom get time to read, and yet I read this in two nights as I couldn't put it down! Parents everywhere would enjoy this book and will applaud the common sense way in which these two special parents have dealt with their almost unique situation. While understanding how much they will want to guard their privacy, I do hope there will be another book letting us in on the new and different challenges they will face at later stages in their children's lives.

5 out of 5 stars nicely written and a great family story.......2000-04-24

I'd love to read more books like this one. A really lovely telling of how the family coped with a lot of little ones at once.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book !.......1999-11-24

I really enjoyed reading that book. The way the dilleys worked through there situation really amazed me! I think if you buy this book you will not be dissapoionted. I have triplets myself and I Know that sometimes it gets kind of troublesome sometimes. Believe me this book is for you!

5 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down!.......1999-02-13

I found this book very interesting to read as it chronicled Becki and Keith's struggle to have children, then their struggle to care for them. As a person who looks after triplets, I cannot imagine what a job it is to look after six! When reading this book it is obvious that Becki and Keith enjoy their roles tremendously, and by looking at the photos of their beautiful children, it's easy to understand why. I highly recommend this book as an inspiring read that will restore your faith in family.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for anyone interested in German Snipers.......2007-04-11

Outstanding book with very good detail about the history of German snipers in WWI and WWII. Covers the rifles, scopes and equipment like never before. A must for collectors or anyone with an interest in snipers.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Workmanship - The German Sniper Bible!.......2002-04-16

After owning this book for some time and only glancing through it, I took it upon myself to go through it in detail. Like all of the other books by Mr. Senich, the attention to detail and focus on the technical side of the German weapon systems (and supporting equipment) is second to none. The photography is splendid, the focus on equipment (including serial numbers) is accurate and sharp, and the archival work that must have gone into putting this together (both text and photos) is truly fantastic.

My only critique would be that in a book of this magnitude, a more precise listing of all references and sources be provided so that future historians can use it as a reference or "jump-off" point in their study of german snipers.

That being said, I have looked and found no better book on German sniping. One can only hope that Mr. Senich keeps on publishing.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent work by a pro writer!!.......2001-11-17

If anyone in this world knows about Sniping, whether it be a US or german sniper, this writer does. He is highly intelligent and uses the best terminology of any one in his field. I highly recommend this book as well as his others to anyone who is interested in it!!

5 out of 5 stars The Collectors Bible.......1999-12-27

Senich's book has become the Bible for advanced collectors around the world. When corresponding with other collectors about any detail relating to German sniper rifles, one need only mention a page number from this book to reach a complete understanding.

            Book Description

From 1880 to 1940, Hopkins, Fauset, and Bonner shaped an African American female response to national and global issues as they fought to rid the world of racism, restrictive gender roles, and oppression. Between 1880 and 1916, using traditional 19th-century literary genres spliced with modern techniques, Hopkins roused her peers to resist segregation and to end reconstruction and the objectification of black women. Serving as the editor for The Colored American Magazine from 1900 to 1904 and writing novels, plays, short stories, anthropological pieces, and historical tributes, Hopkins evoked the fiery spirit of abolitionism, claiming that the battle had not yet been completed. From 1912 through 1932, Fauset wrote in a variety of genres, including the novel, children's literature, travelogs, poetry, and editorials. While working as literary editor for The Crisis, she wrote about her own special concern: the machinations of middle class black communities and the manner in which popular racist and sexist images bombarded and destroyed the integrity of the black self. Bonner composed 25 pieces between 1925 and 1949, examining the urban environment and exposed the triple threat of segregation, sexism, and ghettoization.

            Book Description

Did you know that Tasmanian hens have two husbands? That cellular slime molds commit suicide? That vampire bats will share food with hungry fellow bats and that hanuman langurs commit infanticide? Why creatures great and small behave in such fascinating and seemingly perplexing ways is explained in this delightful account of the evolutionary foundations of animal social behavior.

Only in recent years have biologists and ethologists begun to apply careful evolutionary thinking to the study of animal societies--and with spectacular results. This book presents the choicest of these findings, with a remarkable wealth of insights into the myriad strategies that animals have developed to perpetuate their kind. In an irresistible style, Raghavendra Gadagkar explores the strategies of cooperation and conflict adopted by animals--from the lordly lion to the primitive wasp worker--as they choose mates, raise their young, communicate with others, and establish the division of labor necessary to feed and protect the group and safeguard their territory.

Whether focusing on the birds or the bees, this book offers both superb descriptions and lucid explanations of many different behaviors encountered in the animal world: why a ground squirrel will sound an alarm--even risk its own safety--to warn fellow squirrels of impending danger; why weaver ant larvae donate silk for nest building; why house mice raise their offspring in a communal nursery; and how animals can recognize the relatives they want to favor--or avoid.

Illustrated with both photographs and explanatory diagrams, this expert and inviting tour of the social world of animals will inform and charm anyone curious about the motivations behind the amazing range of activity in the animal kingdom.

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Charming, yet Scientfically Challenging.......2001-08-21

I first encountered Gadagkar through his work on genetic relatedness in wasps and bees. His professional work is extremely careful, quantitative, and innovative. I was surprised to find a different side of this impressive animal behaviorist in this charming little book. Gadagkar has an admirable ability to explain complex biological theory without recourse to complicated terminology and equations.

The centerpiece of Gadagkar's interpretation of cooperation and conflict in animal societies is Hamilton's inequality, which says that individuals will, in the long run, help others at a cost to themselves, if the benefit to the others times their relatedness to the helper is greater than the cost to the helper. This simple little equation is a powerful leitmotif that runs through each and every example in this book. And the examples are extremely elegant and memorable---reading this reminded me of when I read Ray Bradbury's Illustrated Man when I was a kid, so wide ranging and daring are his examples---except that in this case what is being described is scientifically impeccable.

This book is great for beginners in sociobiology and animal behavior, but it is also a wonderful treat for those (like myself) who have read widely in the field.

There are two areas of cooperation/conflict that Gadagkar does not touch. The first is homo sapiens. You'll have to look elsewhere for the sociobiology of humans. The second is cooperation/conflict among cells in multicellular organisms. I recommend the collection edited by Laurent Keller (Princeton University Press) for an introduction to the latter.

              Book Description

The illegitimate daughter of Pope Julius II, Felice della Rovere became one of the most powerful and accomplished women of the Italian Renaissance. Now, Caroline Murphy vividly captures the untold story of a rare woman who moved with confidence through a world of popes and princes. Using a wide variety of sources, including Felice's personal correspondence, as well as diaries, account books, and chronicles of Renaissance Rome, Murphy skillfully weaves a compelling portrait of this remarkable woman. Felice della Rovere was to witness Michelangelo paint the Sistine Chapel, watch her father Pope Julius II lay the foundation stone for the new Saint Peter's, and saw herself immortalized by Raphael in his Vatican frescos. With her marriage to Gian Giordano Orsini--arranged, though not attended, by her father the Pope--she came to possess great wealth and power, assets which she used to her advantage. While her father lived, Felice exercised much influence in the affairs of Rome, even egotiating for peace with the Queen of France. After his death, Felice persevered, making allies of the cardinals and clerics of St. Peter's and maintaining her control of the Orsini land through tenacity, ingenuity, and carefully cultivated political savvy. She survived the Sack of Rome in 1527, but her greatest enemy proved to be her own stepson Napoleone, whose rivalry with his stepbrother Girolamo ended suddenly and violently, and brought her perilously close to losing everything she had spent her life acquiring. With a marvelous cast of characters, The Pope's Daughter is a spellbinding biography set against the brilliant backdrop of Renaissance Rome.

4 out of 5 stars Review of The Pope's daughter.......2007-01-19

Tightly written with loads of details that goes a long way in explaining how she developed and became successful. I now have a better understanding of the 'Medevial Rome" area that I visited.

5 out of 5 stars A Renaissance Tapestry with New Colorful Threads.......2006-01-10

For the reader familiar with early sixteenth-century Rome, Caroline Murphy's book is a carefully compiled compendium of images and priceless facts, albeit some treading on familiar ground, for example the horrific Sack of Rome or the sexual anarchy in the Vatican during the reign of the infamous Borgia pope. Yet, there is so much new material on a fascinating woman, that even general readers interested in history should be mesmerized by it. The lives of numerous old baronial families form a foundation for the story of the Della Rovere and Orsini clans, of the militant Pope Julius, Felice's father, and the lords of Bracciano, the stronghold of the Orsini's. Minute details of everyday life in Rome enclose the broader picture of a papal daughter who governed her family with a suprisingly strong hand, long after her papal father died. Images of lavish feasts, rebuilding of St. Peter's, and perpetual enminity between the ruling clans are just minute details of an elaborate and very enjoyable reading. Although a page-turner, be prepared to move slowly, because the thousands of facts will demand time to savor them! Definitely not a quick read for most. Highly recommended.

              4 out of 5 stars TANTALIZING.......2005-10-08

Caroline Murphy has sketched an extraordinary life. Felice della Rovere's worlds -- personal and political -- were complicated ones, and she seems to have been amazing in how she negotiated them. I say "seems" because it's very often difficult to tell whether the author is basing a statement on solid evidence or whether she is taking a leap -- about an action, about a motivation, about an emotion -- a sort of best guess based on the evidence. That's often frustrating and often downright irritating, but all in all it's worth it to see the shape, if not the real substance, of the life.

              5 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Renaissance Lady.......2005-07-26

This is a fascinating biography of Felice della Rovere, illegitimate daughter of Pope Julius II, the great Renaissance pope. Felice, however, was important and influential in her own right, and the author, with thorough research, has vividly provided an engrossing story of Felice's life, including her childhood; marriages and children; her complex relationship with her father, the pope; and her rise to power, political influence, and wealth within Renaissance Italy. The author convincingly contends that Felice became the most powerful woman of her time, and yet, strangely, her story has not been told before. The biography of this remarkable women is enhanced with the backdrop of life in Renaissance Rome and the surrounding Italian countryside; the life of the city streets, the day-to-day workings of the great palaces, how the economy worked, wars, the lives and works of the great painters Michelangelo and Raphael, and the intrigues of the nobility are all described. Dozens of beautiful black and white illustrations are placed at the beginning of each chapter, and an attractive set of color plates highlights key persons, important paintings, and castles and palaces of the era. Strongly recommended for readers interested in women's history, the history of the Renaissance and the history of Rome.

5 out of 5 stars MORE REMARKABLE BECAUSE IT'S TRUE.......2005-06-20

It was Rome, 1483. If ever a baby was doomed by birth, it was Felice Della Rovere. The odds were stacked against her. She was female and illegitimate. Nonetheless she rose above the liabilities of birth to become the most powerful woman in Rome. The story of her life, as related by Harvard art historian Caroline P. Murphy is fascinating, as her achievements rival those of any contemporary woman.

It was one thing to be born illegitimate during the Renaissance, quite another to be the illegitimate daughter of Cardinal Giuliano della Rovere who would become Pope Julius II. Not a gentle leader, Julius was known as "The Warrior Pope," one who despised and reviled the rather hedonistic lifestyles of the Borgias. Nonetheless, he was in some ways a helpful father, seeing to the advantageous marriage of his daughter to a member of the wealthy Orsini family, which gave Felice access to the means necessary to amass a personal estate. Felice had been married once before but left a young widow. (The name of her first husband could not be traced).

She was raised in her mother's home and learned much of intrigue and manipulation during her formative years. When her father was elected to the papacy she became quite useful to him as a runner of errands. She was witness to the painting of the Sistine Chapel by Michelangelo, and the laying of a foundation for a new St. Peter's. Felice may well have inherited her ambition from her father who sought greater Roman power.

Upon the death of Julius II, Felice used the Orsini family influence to become a friend of cardinals. She understood politics well, and used this knowledge to great advantage. Even the sack of Rome in 1527 did not see her downfall, as she successfully arranged safe passage for herself and her offspring to Urbino.

Murphy enriches Felice's story with myriad details regarding her daily life, whether it is the overseeing of servants, seeing to her gardens and wine cellars, cosseting the influential, bribing officials, or even arranging a murder, which we are told was commonplace in that day and time.

Felice's story may have been lost to us for half a century, but after reading "The Pope's Daughter" this incredible woman will not be forgotten again.
