good background on a hard to find title.......2002-07-11

It was the first Crowood book that I bought, so I wanted to check it out before I ordered any other of their books. I was unsure what to expect, so I was pleased with what actually arrived. I will definitely buy a couple other titles of theirs, and I would recommend this particular book too.

This super 380-page coffee table book documents the history, art and literature of the Jewish Nation from tracts from the Jewish Bible (Tanach) to articles about Israel in the early 1990's.

Complementing the text are nearly 140 color and 100 black and white illustrations covering the range of Judaic arts and crafts including antiquities and ceremonial art, fabrics, precious metals, stained glass and paintings from many periods and countries.

Part 1 covers The Bible with excerpts from the Creation of the World and The Garden of Eden, through the accounts of Joseph, Moses, David, Solomon, Isaiah, Ezekiel, the Babylonian Exile and the rise and fall of Haman.
Part 2 covers Post-biblical literature including accounts of the victory of Judah the Maccabee, Flavius Joseph's account of the Fall of Massada and sections from the Midrash and Sanhedrin.

Part 3 covers Medieval and Rennaisance times and includes the writings of Maimonides and poets such as Solomon Ibn Gabirol and Judah HaLevi (whose poem To Israel in Exile shows how the Jewish Nation always yearned to be reunited with the Land of Israel) and also documents and writings pertaining to the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492, and part 4 covers writing by and about Jews from lands such as Ethiopia, Morocco and Turkey.

Subsequent sections include writings by and about Jews and include writings by Baruch Spinoza , Israel Zangwill , IL Peretz , Israel Bashevis Singer , Sigmund Freud and Hayim Nachman Bialik , as well as extracts from Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice and the Proclamation by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1799 promising to restore the Land of Israel to the Jews , in return for their support.

There is a section about Jews in the Americas and includes the memorable work by American Jewish poet Emma Lazarus , Banner of the Jew:
"Wake Israel, wake! Recall today The glorious Maccabean rage..."

Then there is a section describing the horrors of the Holocaust, which includes writings by Anne Frank, Eli Wiesel, Primo Levi and Simon Wiesenthal.
The last section is about the Re-established State of Israel, and includes works by Theodore Herzl, Gold Meir , Chaim Weitzman , Albert Einstein , David Ben-Gurion and Amos Oz. It ends with essays by Edward Norden and Edward Grossman describing the difficulties faced by new immigrants to Israel from Russia and Ethiopia.

This is an important historical record at a time when Jews and Israel are faced with their greatest test of endurance since the Holocaust. We need to remember our history in these frightening and somber times.

Overrated.......2004-10-03

If one uses the word "truth" in the title of his book, he should be certain that all that he writes is indeed the truth.

Mr. Thomasma incorrectly paraphrases Captain Clark's Nov 14, 1804, journal entry stating that Charbonneau wanted to hire on as a "guide". Neither Charbonneau nor Sacagawea had any guiding skills and the captains knew this. It is amazing that someone could claim to have read the journals and not know this.

When one is wrong on something as basic as this the reader has to wonder where else is this guy wrong?

The Truth About Sacagawea a book review by Sarah.......2003-03-05

The Truth About Sacagawea has a wonderful story to tell about Sacagawea. Kenneth Thomasma worked very hard on it. This story is adventurous and it makes you want to keep on reading on and on. You always need to believe in yourself like Sacagawea, Lewis, and Clark did when they were going through tough times. Sacagawea was very brave to go on an expedition with her young child. Sacagawea went on this expedition because she was hired as an interpreter and guide person. Lewis and Clark went up the Missisippi River and then traveled on the Snake River.

A Good Introduction.......2002-04-30

While this book is a bit short (96 pages) it is also filled with fact, as written by Lewis and Clark themselves. This is a testament to the value of Sacajawea to the expedition. A crucial part of the success of the exploration of the Louisanna Purchase.

Sacajawea proved very valuable in finding food, acting as an interpreter for the exploring party and guiding them through lands that she remembered from her younger days. She was a Shoshoni girl who was captured at age 11 and married to another tribe.

This book serves as a good introduction (it was mine) to a fascinating woman who's place in history, while assured, probably is not as esteemed as it actually should be. She is too often overlooked in the school books or her contributions minimized. I barely remember anything (other than her name) from my days of learning history in school. And I was astonished to find that William Clark was the guardian of her two children after her death (before the choice of her husband).

On oversight this is a good book for a history buff or for someone interested in Native American History. It is also easy to understand and read and would benefit children from, say, 12 and up.

The irony of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.......2001-02-15

As Lewis and Clark began their journey to the Pacific Ocean, the two captains found it necessary to find a guide in order to pass over the mountains and to communicate with the Natives. As Thomasma says, "The hiring of Charbonneau and his young Shoshoni wife would prove to be a stroke of good fortune and good judgement."(p.15) As the reader progresses through the book, he or she may discover that the good luck wasn't referring to Charbonneau. In fact, the journal entries prove just the opposite. Throughout the book, it is very interesting to find the irony of hiring Charbonneau. As it turned out, this French-Canadian Trapper was nothing but a nuisance to the party. The irony shows when Sacajawea essentially becomes the guide, when she wasn't even hired, but brought on for sympathy reasons. In this view of the Charbonneau family, Charbonneau and his wife (although they are considered one with the other) are foils of one another. This biography well describes the voyage with the young mother and her husband, and their trials and helpful guidance given along the full voyage.

Those who are into history should read this book without any hesitation. This book falls into different categories of history, including American History, Native American Heritage, etc. This very informative narrative would easily be liked by history fans, as well as other ordinary people. Personally, I have never been a fan of history, but this book was very fascinating to me. The structure of this account "allows readers to experience what the explorers wrote about Sacajawea." (P. 11) Thomasma presents summaries of journal entries, along with a description of the points made out by that entry. In between each entry is a summary of the other events between the respecting passages. This structure gives a very effective way of helping the reader understand Sacajawea's importance and value along the Lewis and Clark Expedition. I highly recommend this 92 page narrative not only for the historical aspect, but also for the great story line it gives to the reader, and for the respect developed by reading this account of Sacajawea, the young mother who set a good example for all people.

This book is a concise account of exactly what we know about Sacajawea's contribution to the Lewis and Clark expedition. The author's unique approach to presenting the truth is that he first uses an entry-by-entry listing, then paraphrses the journal entries, and then he makes personal comments. You draw your own conclusions!

Steve Beveren's book "Modeling the Panther Tank" fills a much needed void in my modeling library. An outstanding combination of photographs, "how to's", bibliography, historical data and kit/accessory list - I consider this one the best of the Osprey Modeling series to date. If you like to model the Panther tank, definately add this one to your library.

Matthew Arnold was one Cool Cat who knew where it was at (And he had the Coolest sideburns...).......2005-09-02

Matthew Arnold is right up there with Tennyson and Browning as the most caracatured of the Victorian writers. He was a very wise and cool cat. He had the coolest sideburns since the likes of another boss cat, Aleksandr Pushkin, the founder of modern Russian Literature.

Arnold's social commentary is among the best prose of the Victorian age...and there's a lot to comment against in that era. Just read the beginning of Charles Dickens' Bleak House to know what I'm talking about.

Semi-sweetness and Light.......2001-08-27

This is probably the most important work of an important English social critic. Cambridge University does an admirable job with the text. Arnold lives today as a grotesque caricature. He is the bone-headed Neanderthal Terry Eagleton digs up just to bury again for a generation of English majors. This image could not possibly be more wrong. In his day, Arnold was known almost as well for his good-humor as for the critical phrases he coined. Arnold was a three dimensional human being, deeply afraid that materialism was breeding crassness, and that crassness would destroy the best in everything worth being and knowing in every culture in the world. Unlike Ruskin and Morris and Swinburne and others of the Victorian world, Arnold worked hard for a living, and yet still cared deeply for things beyond his daily bread. Students assigned this text shouldn't grumble. They might learn something very close to their own hearts.

The prairie dog is a colonial, keystone species of the grassland ecosystem of western North America. Myriad animals regularly visit colony-sites to feed on the grass there, to use the burrows for shelter or nesting, or to prey on the prairie dogs. Unfortunately, prairie dogs are disappearing, and the current number is only about 2% of the number encountered by Lewis and Clark in the early 1800s.
