Comprehensive Look At Gay Families.......1997-08-28
This was a good, somewhat disjointed look at lesbian and gay families in the United States today. This is perhaps the only book dealing with the history of the movement, but much of it seemed impersonal. I am not sure if Benkov's target audience is lesbian and gay parents and their supporters, or if the book is supposed to be a way to convince those opposed to the movement. All in all though, it was an enjoyable and informative book, and it is a must read for anyone interested in this subject

Put yourself inside the heads of folks who fought this war........1998-06-08
I was doing genological research and wanted to understand better what the folks who were involved in the Mexican War were thinking, why they fought, where they came from, etc. This book did that and more. It is incredible to read the very words of these soldiers--it makes you realize that there is very little difference between our us and our ancestors. No one can explain it better than their own words.

Those of us who enjoy reading about Judi's life will be a little disappointed,for this book deals mainly with her acting career.Her many friends in the profession have written amusing stories of their contact with her during various stage and film roles,which are quite entertaining and highlight their view of her as an individual.Judi Dench fans will,no doubt,find it quite an enjoyable read and well worth the price.
I Love You, Judi, But..........2007-03-02
Dame Judi Dench is a superbly talented actress and a lovely human being, and she earned every bit of the acclaim sent her way. But in this book, her biographer asked a bunch of associates to write about her, and an endless series of essays oozing with praise gets old fast. I wouldn't even read it if it was DARLING MICHAEL LaROCCA. Sorry.
In praise of Judi.......2006-12-08
This is a charming collection of tiny essays or vignettes, singing the praises of Dame Judi Dench, by her fellow actors, directors and producers. Her co workers have nothing but love and admiration for this lady who apparently is, as she has always appeared to me, a warm friendly, lovable and superbly talented woman. These snippets tell of her love of practical jokes and of upholding certain theatre traditions, some of her own devising, but also of her kindness and lack of "side" to younger and less famous actors. The stories span many years and show that her genuine warmth and humanity has not changed as her fame grew. I love this Dame and am sure that others would love to read this collection of tales as much as I did.

I like Judi Dench and I won't call her Dame Judi because if you want to know this much about her. She's not into Dame Judi this. She writes her name Judi Dench no OBE or CH. I even think she is kind of embarrassed by the title since she got it at 54 years old. Maybe she regrets taking it but regardless she will always be Dame Judi Dench to the crowd but she really is just Dame Judi. Sadly, she is as nice in person as she seems to be. I wrote her twice and she wrote back months later but still somebody with schedule must have better things to do than write her fans. I think Judi is getting the accolades because people in the theater community just love her to death. She acts like a maternal figure to her cast mates and she is lots of fun on the set as well. She has playfulness in the theater and God Bless her because I can't imagine performing the same role with the same lines 8 times a week for any long engagement. I saw Judi Saturday Night performing in Sir Noel Coward's Hay Fever with Peter Bowles and the cast. She works hard at it. That's the key. People respect her because she works hard at creating the illusion. I'm sorry, Judi, but Jay Leno performs the TOnight Show and does 150 performances during the year as a comic whether it's after the Tonight show or on weekends, he works hard just like Judi at being funny. Judi inhabits a character quite the same way. She works hard and works well with theater directors because they have a mutual respect for each other. We'll probably won't see another actress like Judi Dench in our lifetime. She reminds me of my mother, short and that plain beautiful face. When it comes to Shakespeare roles, she nails it there is no doubt about it. Can other actresses do it, definitely, but what separates Judi apart from others is that dedication, loyalty, and determination in making you believe anything on stage. Somehow she doesn't get board and is so skeptical that she will work again that you just want to tell her that she'll be working for the rest of her life. She has become the Peggy Ashcroft of our generation. Sadly, actresses who make their careers on stage will have to do film, television, and act in other ways to survive. Judi had suffer a heartbroken loss and she regrets not having another child. She had a career few of us could only dream of and the talent and drive many of us lack in our passion. Acting is Judi's passion and that's clear but she doesn't have that attitude or ego that so many others possess in this business and maybe that's why she's so nice. She treats everybody with that respect. You just can't imagine her being anybody but Judi and she puts her heart in roles that aren't quite sympathetic like Lady Macbeth for one. oh, we love Judi and yes she is one of the top actresses on stage, television, and film. This book is worth the purchase for any aspiring actor or actress. Unlike some, Judi knows the story or plot briefly. She doesn't read the scripts and she doesn't dig deep unless she is in rehearsal. It's there that she masters her craft in creating the illusion. I was shocked to learn that she has trouble with evil female characters. It's just not in her and that's fine because Judi likes to play people with faults. It's hard to imagine that Judi is her worst critic. She doesn't watch herself. While she aims for perfection in her performance, we can't expect anything less than a hundred percent. Whether's she's doing Shakespeare, Coward, Wilde, or even a sitcom, we can imagine her playing a character that we come to know and love just as much as we love Judi herself.
A light but lovely read........2005-03-13
Essentially a collection of tributes from a wide ranging slice of the actresses peer group, all of whom adore her and admire her skill terribly. I really enjoyed learning a little more about Dame Judi, as famous as her face is, she is afterall still somewhat enigmatic. The writing is varied because of it's shared authorship but as such makes the book more challenging.
This is not a celebratory style that would work for anyone famous, the very fact it focuses on Dame Judi makes it more than tolerable. Had it been other stars it may not have been so easy to take nor to read. But it is lovely, like a few days in the company of Lionel and Jean (As time goes by).

Almost the Perfect Reference.......2003-07-09
I will not spend a lot of time writing about how valuable a reference this is - the other reviewers on this site have already more than done it justice. Aside from the relative lack of material on early Zionism (also pointed out by one of the other reviewers), this book has most if not all of the relevant documents. I have only one major criticism (the reason I gave the book four stars instead of 5): the almost complete lack of information about the original sources. Apart from a one-liner preceding each document, no information is given regarding 1) the citation of the original work, including page numbers, where appropriate; 2) the language in which the original work was written; 3) if the work was not written in English, credit for the translation, the date thereof, etc. While these may not be of interest to the casual reader, to anyone doing research in the field, if only for a college paper, these details are critical. Furthermore, in an area as controversial as the Arab-Israeli conflict, the ability to trace documents back to the original and verify translations is everything.
Every UN Document.......2003-04-08
What else can be said about a book that contains every UN and League of Nations document about the Israel-Palestine conflict? It is a necessity as a reference for those engaged and a great book to learn about the conflict and its basic political evolution.
A book worthy of being called objective.......2003-03-03
If one is a previously biased reader, this book will doubtlessly contain some documents that are upsetting to read on grounds of including inciteful material. However, the only real criticism that I have is that the 3rd edition has several documents that are of interest to those seeking to research the early Mandatory period, such as documents by Ze'ev Jabotinsky, the Revisionist Zionist and ideological founder of the Irgun Zvai Leumi. It is understanable though, that as future editions come out the length could get phrohibitively long without pruning some data. As a basic and intermediate level documentary text it is one of the best I have come across.
Essential reference to the whole Arab-Israeli issue........2002-10-31
I write in relation to the sixth revised and updated version of this work. My purchase was based upon the recommendations of others here and I was certainly not disappointed with my acquisition of this book.
It really is a priceless reference and guide to the way in which the Middle East has taken shape and how the whole Arab-Israeli issue has developed since it's inception. Indeed, references are quoted with effect from 1882 through until the present day.
We are treated to a seemingly endless accurate list of letters, speeches, reports and articles from a considerable cross section of sources, both in the international arena and in the region itself. This latest version even contains sections on the Camp David negotiations and their subsequent failure in 2000/2001.
One is able to see from the direct quotes of the parties concerned, exactly what was said, and moreover in it's true context, making this an indisputably essential asset to understanding the conflicts and `peace-making' in the region. This level of understanding is made accessible not only to the Camp David talks but also to virtually every other episode of significance relative to this ongoing issue throughout the many decades.
A highly recommended read.
An excellent source of info.......2002-05-19
The book is simply a collection of documents on the Arab-Israeli conflict, dating back to the British Mandate in Palestine. The editors included all the important papers such as the Balflour Declaration, the "White Paper," various UN declarations, and speeches made by both Arab and Israeli leaders. The latest documents it contains are those covering the Camp David meetings between President Clinton, barak, and Arafat near the end of Clinton's presidency. While it is not a history of the conflict (merely a collection of historical documents), it certainly can provide you with plenty of info on the subject.

As humanity presses down inexorably on the natural world, people debate the extent to which we can save the Earth's millions of different species without sacrificing human economic welfare. But is this argument wise? Must the human and natural worlds be adversaries? In this book, ecologist Michael Rosenzweig finds that ecological science actually rejects such polarization. Instead it suggests that, to be successful, conservation must discover how we can blend a rich natural world into the world of economic activity. This revolutionary, common ground between development and conservation is called reconciliation ecology: creating and maintaining species-friendly habitats in the very places where people live, work, or play. The book offers many inspiring examples of the good results already achieved. The Nature Conservancy, for instance, has a cooperative agreement with the Department of Defense, with more than 200 conservation projects taking place on more than 170 bases in 41 states. In places such as Elgin Air Force Base, the human uses-testing munitions, profitable timbering and recreation--continue, but populations of several threatened species on the base, such as the long-leaf pine and the red-cockaded woodpecker, have been greatly improved. The Safe Harbor strategy of the Fish and Wildlife Service encourages private landowners to improve their property for endangered species, thus overcoming the unintended negative aspects of the Endangered Species Act. And Golden Gate Park, which began as a system of sand dunes, has become, through human effort, a world of ponds and shrubs, waterfowl and trees. Rosenzweig shows that reconciliation ecology is the missing tool of conservation, the practical, scientifically based approach that, when added to the rest, will solve the problem of preserving Earth's species.

Inspiration amidst depression........2003-08-20
This book inspires you to look at your surroundings and make changes that improve the welfare of the living world around you. However, it states the cold equations of our increasing destruction, and explains what the future is likely to bring if we don't immediately start working for a better world.
Plants and animals used to be able to move to new habitats during periods of climate change -- today we've locked them into too-small reserves and they have nowhere to go except extinct during the current warming trend. That's why we must work hard at making our cities (where most of us live) as hospitable as possible for other living creatures.
