Book Description
Alexander of Macedonia was undoubtedly one of the greatest generals of all time. This book, by John Warry, an expert on the warfare of the Classical world, examines the principle battles of Alexander's campaigns in detail. The battles of the Granicus, Issus, Gaugamela, Hydaspes and the difficult siege of Tyre are all discussed at length. These careful studies shed light on Macedonian tactics: in particular the combination of armoured infantry phalanx with fast-moving cavalry. The men and equipment of both Alexander and his Persian enemies are also examined, providing a comprehensive insight into Alexander's life and military actions.
Customer Reviews:
One of the Best.......2002-12-02
Alexander 334-323 BC: Conquest of the Persian Empire (Campaign Series 7) by John Warry is one of the best of the Osprey Campaign Series. Unlike most to the other books, Alexander does not focus on a given battle or a series of battles, but on the almost decade long conquest of Persia and neighboring countries, such as parts of India. If one is looking for an overview of Alexander's conquests then there is probably no better book. The battles are described in such a manner as to acquaint the reader with the ins and outs and the maps are beyond excellent.
Warry does a fine job in explaining how 50,000 infantry and cavalry troops were able to defeat an empire with troops several times their number. Focusing on the the tactical brilliance of Alexander and the innovations in battle field technologies, the book explains why Alexander was victorious. It is written in a readable fashion and is a good place to start for anyone who is interested in the conquests of Alexander.
A bit bias.......2000-12-22
It is a very interesting book. But it is written from the Greeks point of view about the Persians. For examole, it is well accepted by modern historians that the Persian army was not 600,000 men and yet the author fails to mention this and just repeats the old fictional account that was passed on from the past. However, I recommend this book for anyone interested on ancient history and Alexander the great. But it is a bit bias.
Like a Discovery/History Channel TV special in a book!.......2000-08-14
Don't let the size of this book fool you---the point of reading is to understand and this is the best book I've read that puts Alexander the Great's campaigns together in a way that military professionals and casual readers can understand. Every war form we use today has its antecedent in the past--there is a lot to learn from the past if we take the time to reflect on it.
Warry shows some remarkable things--that Alexander's Army of 40,000 defeated a Persian Army of 600,000 and did it with almost no casualties because in ancient war shields defeated arrows and spears. The Macedonian phalanx--a formation of men with shields linked together would close on the enemy at foot speed led by Parmenio, while Alexander surged ahead with his cavalry and collapsed his enemy while the phalanx held the enemy. Think of how Commanders combined their arms in the film, Braveheart to see how Alexander waited until the time was right before placing himself and his Cavalry force at the critical spot to smash his enemy's structure. It was when enemy cohesion and formations collapsed---when they threw down their shields and ran---that the high casualties we usually associate with 1st Generation muscle-powered combat come from. That we are having too many casualties on the modern, automatic weapons fire swept battlefield, means its high time we re-examine the individual Soldier shield to recreate a phalanx capability today.
When Alexander confronted the walled island city of Tyre/Sidon he built siege engines on both ships and rolled across a causeway of land he built by throwing stones into the sea as foretold in the Bible in Ezekiel 26. Warry shows the siege in amazing detailed, color illustrations that enlighten without boring the reader as a dry "scholarly" book tends to do. He then marched across the known world at amazing march speeds--Warry describes the weaponry/equipment in great deatil--you'll notice the macedonians wore a "himation" which could be used both as a sleeping blanket and as a coat--there was no wasted weight being carried on the Soldier's back--a lesson we could stand to relearn today.
Reading Warry's book with its long-range and close-up maps and illustrations from ancient engravings and modern depictions is like an inter-active computer simulation of the battle---you can see both the "big" picture and the "little" picture, in short this book is a masterpiece. We need to re-evaluate our views that for a book to be "accurate" it has to be visually dull, especially in the computer age we live in where we can with hyperlinks go to an entire world of background information from all walks of life on any given subject.
A very good analysis of Alexander's Persian Campaign.......2000-04-17
If you want a comprehensive analysis, with explications of the army's and the leaders, with maps and graphics in color, explaining the tactics and strategies involved in this battles... THIS IS YOUR BOOK. Very simple to understand, and very complete review.
Also try "Cannae 216 B.C." - Hannibal's campaign against Rome, other excelent book
A great introduction to Alexander's campaigns and battles.......2000-01-29
One of the better books of the Osprey Campaign series, this book gives a concise and yet fairly comphrehensive account of the strategies and tactics involved in the campaigns and battles of alexander the great. The key battles of the campaign are well illustrated and easy to follow. The book is an excellent and informative introduction to the full scope of Alexander's political, strategic, and tactical genius.

Book Description
The essays collected here on the Gawain-Poet offer stimulating introductions to Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Pearl, Cleanness and I>Patience, providing both information and original analysis. Topics include theories of authorship; the historical and social background to the poems, with individual sections on particularly important features within them; gender roles in the poems; the manuscript itself; the metre, vocabulary and dialect of the poems; and their sources. A section devoted to Sir Gawain investigates the ideas of courtesy and chivalry found within it, and explores some of its later adaptations from the fifteenth to the twentieth centuries. A full bibliography completes the volume.DEREK BREWER is Emeritus Professor of English Literature, University of Cambridge; JONATHAN GIBSON has worked as a lecturer in the Universities of Exeter and Durham.

Book Description
Sent to Auschwitz on the first Jewish transport, Rena Kornreich survived the Nazi death camps for over three years. While there she was reunited with her sister Danka. Each day became a struggle to fulfill the promise Rena made to her mother when the family was forced to split apart--a promise to take care of her sister. One of the few Holocaust memoirs about the lives of women in the camps, Rena's Promise is a compelling story of the fleeting human connections that fostered determination and made survival a possibility. From the bonds between mothers, daughters, and sisters, to the links between prisoners, and even prisoners and guards, Rena's Promise reminds us of the humanity and hope that survives inordinate inhumanity.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful book!.......2007-06-04
Rena's Promise is a wonderful, inspiring narrative. It portrays the horrors of the holocaust in a easy-to-read and concise way, and it brought me to tears!
Rena's Promise should be required reading in schools throughout the world.......2007-03-10
This was undoubtedly one of the most horrifying, detailed and memorable Holocaust survival books I've ever read, and I've read many. At times throughout the book my tears would not stop - not just for the brutality of it all, but for the fact that despite all the evil surrounding her and committed upon her, Rena continued to live an altruisticly and humanely. Consistently, Rena shared every morsel of food she "organized" with her sister, always dividing it evenly, never willing to take food away from another prisioner - never reducing herself to the Nazi's level. It is incredible to read how she was able to survive despite all the odds and obstacles. She is not only a survivor but a true hero and I am forever changed and better for having known her story; I just wish I could have known her.
I recommend this book to everyone and think it should be required reading for schoolchildren throughout the world. NEVER FORGET!!!
Survival in Auschwitz.......2007-02-23
Rena Kornreich was 19 years old when the Nazis swept into Poland. She recounts her experiences under the brutal Nazi occupation of Poland, and her deportation, along with her younger sister Danka, in March 1942. to Auschwitz, where in harrowing detail she tells of the horrifying conditions there, and the preverse cruety of the Nazis.
She tells of her promise to stand by her sister to the end, and describes the gas chambers and the cruel experiments on Jewish girls and women by Mengele.
She recounts the logic of Nazi genocide...how any consistent Nazi plan had to traget Jewish women specifically as women., for they were the only ones who would be able to ensure the continuation of Jewish life. There is sound evidence that the odds for surviving the Holocaust were worse for Jewish women than Jewish men.
[...]
Rena tells how she and her sister survived against the odds, and the epilogue tells of the lives of those who survived, and their experiences after the war.
How did they get away with this?.......2006-12-28
This is the best book about the holocaust that I've read so far. It is so gripping and really draws you in to the story. I can't conceive of how anyone survived that horrible place while being starved and forced to work. I find myself laying in bed at night thinking of how Rena and Danka would have loved a nice warm bed and I can't imaging having to sleep on a cold wooden board for 3 years.
"I do not have room in my heart to hate. To hate is to let Hitler win." --Rena.......2006-09-26
For those fans of Rena, who have not heard, she passes away on August 8, 2006. It is up to you now to carry her voice and her story to the world. Among those sending condolences, The Museum of Women at Auscwitz, Poland, wrote, "Our historians still feel this is one of the most historically accurate and important book on Auschwitz ever written."
You can learn more about Rena's Promise, where a study guide is available for teachers and book clubs at www.heatherdune.com

Book Description
After Prussia's dismemberment a drastic re-organisation of the entire army was necessary, and the cavalry underwent this process with the rest. At the time of the mobilisation in 1813, the somewhat reduced mounted arm was supplemented by voluntary and militia formations; and once peace was established after the First Abdication, a further re-organisation was begun. The fateful campaign of 1815 was fought with the Prussian cavalry still in the throes of this re-organisation. Packed with diagrams, illustrations and eight full page colour plates by Bryan Fosten, this book by Peter Hofschröer details the history, organisation, equipment and uniforms of the Prussian cavalry which fought in the Napoleonic wars.

Book Description
The litany of environmental bad news — rapid extinction of species, pollution, depleted food sources — can be overwhelming, but there's hope too. In this thoughtful look at what’s happening behind the grim headlines, authors David Suzuki and Holly Dressel show that thousands of individuals, groups, and businesses are already changing their ways. They highlight the growing number of profitable companies with a positive presence in their communities, activists and Third World villages practicing true participatory democracy, farmers and ranchers sharing their land with other species — even some governments, local and national, basing economic development on an eco-friendly model. The technologies needed to make a better world, say the authors, are already within reach — and being used. This practical, inspiring guide to saving the planet is based on the true stories of ordinary people who are doing it every day.
Customer Reviews:
Important Uplifting Facts about what is being done to HELP .......2007-01-13
This book will give you hope. It also will uncover the devastation on our planet, BUT with solutions that many are taking to change things for the better. You will learn many interesting and uplifting facts and enjoy being better informed in a way that gives a ray of hope.
David Suzuki has been a favorite environmenalist in Canada for years due in part to his marvelous TV program " The Nature of Things." Truly a person who is working with all his heart to improve the Planet he loves so dearly. It is a great book to give as a gift as well to those who would like some positive spin on environmental issues, while being informed on individulas that are making a difference for us all.
Inspiration, Hope, Encouragement, and Action For The Environment.......2006-11-09
Dr. David Suzuki and co-author Holly Dressel have put together a series of examples of good environmental stewardship going on all over the world for a refreshing break from the usual enviro bad news we are constantly being pelted with.
From individuals with small projects on up to larger multi-national efforts, there are a host of positive accomplishments covered and this is not just "Good News"- it's excellent, uplifting and inspiring great news- the kind of good news that everyone concerned with the health of the world needs for inspiration on continued action for the environment.
The authors conclude with the idea that teaching children from early age about the workings of nature by immersing them in it, will enhance and spread a new sense of awe, respect and good environmental stewardship of the Earth. Many examples of current enviro-education are cited. This attitude parallels the thoughts of Dr. David W. Orr in his books "Ecological Literacy", "Earth in Mind", et al. Teach your children well!
There are several resources for environmental action cited at the end of this fine book.
David Suzuki is the Chair of the David Suzuki Foundation (google it). This website is full of resources for environmental education, action and involvement.
A little bit overly simplistic.......2006-08-25
While it is refreshing to see Dr. Suzuki focus on the positive, the conspiratorial tone of the book and his pervasive suspicion of commerce put me off.
First book of the genre I bought.......2005-08-31
I'm beginning studies in Environmental Science and this is the first book I've read along the lines of sustainability. I have to say it was an amazing read. Positive and optimistic but without losing site of how wrong things are right now and of how bad they can potentially get. Very realistic.
There seems to be a focus on sustainable agriculture and foresting, which was enlightning because I had never read much on those particular subjects. There are other interesting topics that are explored in this book.
A must-buy, no doubt about it. Thank you David, for an insightful read... and for fueling my optimism about our future.
Hope for Changing our Troubled Planet.......2004-12-18
While consumptive and wasteful practices continue to plague the global world, there is new hope that has emerged among many people adapting to a more environmentally friendly attitude. In Good News for a Change, the two authors show how new practices focus on the idea of sustainability. Local values have returned ecosystems to their natural states and has allowed for long-term productivity. Together, we are finding ways in which to live that does not have to compromise quality of life.
The improvements to our everyday life have affected such things as habitat destruction, global warming, toxic waste and resource depletion. Until recently, many people were unaware of their effects and often were not discussed. However, a recent surge in the environmentalist movement has placed these issues into the minds of people across the world. No longer do we have to discuss how our natural world is changing. Instead, we have the knowledge to implicate plans that change the world in which we live.
Many of these environment problems stem from new dishonest corporate values that have displaced traditional home values. Not only do corporate values pollute water and the air we breathe, but they also create social inequalities that are hard to notice. Desires for money and the flaunting of luxurious items have been regarded as the road to happiness. Private interests have dominated policy-making and have changed the way we conduct business in the industrial world.
Multinational corporations' separation of human activities and nature has led to different attitudes and values from the workplace than those at home. If viewed together, people would realize that sustainable living should not incorporate money into the value system. Instead, wealth would be valued as a helping tool; something that can bring uplift to a community or an area in need. Human happiness could be preserved without hurting our natural resources which we rely on.
However, the western value system continues to threaten our natural resources as material wealth and consumptive practices seem to be the road to security. This will have serious impacts on future generations. Each day, we continue to lose species that once roamed on Earth. Humans have yet to understand the complex natural system in which they live. Efficiency must be increased and waste must be kept in check. By doing so, future generations will have access to unpolluted water, good soil for food production and also clean air to breathe.
Suzuki and Dressel approached developing business values in a variety of ways throughout the book. Particular issues discussed include restoration of biodiversity, saving water supplies and new growing methods for food production. They also touched on specific examples on how to manage forests, fisheries, and wildlife. In closing, the development of new technologies and the green revolution were discussed in full. This new revolution gives new options which enhance quality of life.
Being concerned over the environment, I approached this book thinking it would summarize the issues at hand and not give reasonable solutions. However, this book showed many examples of how change is occurring throughout the world at different levels that restored my faith that nature still can be protected. I agree with the authors that change must start at the local levels. When businesses start to go public, they fail to meet local concerns or lose the foundation on which the business was built upon.
The authors point out how money should be invested or shared into community needs and interests. They often drew upon examples of businesses with profits. It is easy to share when you have big profits. However, they rarely discuss what is to be done for people without such businesses. Everyday people that want to make a change are often unable to do so because of the lack of financial backing. Certain new technologies cost more and are not accessible by all.
