Jews in a Graeco-Roman World
Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0199271399 |
Book Description
This book contains studies of the social, cultural, and religious history of the Jews in the Graeco-Roman world. Some of the sixteen contributors are specialists in Jewish history, others in classics. They tackle from different angles the extent to which Jews in this period differed from other peoples in the Mediterranean region, and how much Jewish evidence can be used for the history of the wider classical world. The authors make extensive use not only of types of evidence familiar to classicists, such as inscriptions and the writing of Josephus, but also Jewish religious literature, including rabbinic texts. The various studies demonstrate that, although Jews lived to some extent apart from others and with distinctive customs, in many ways this showed the cultural presuppositions and preoccupations of their gentile contemporaries. The book aims to encourage wider use of the Jewish evidence by classicists and will be important for all students of the classical world.

Cambridge Commentaries on Writings of the Jewish & Christian World 200 BC to AD 200: Volume 6, Jews and Christians: Graeco-Roman Views
Molly Whittaker Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0521285569 |
Book Description
The aim of this book is to give access to sources which illustrate Graeco-Roman views on Jews and Christians from 200 BC to AD 200. Passages range from longer extracts written by historians to short incidental references by disparate authors which throw light on attitudes towards beliefs and social customs. The pagan religious background, especially the Mystery religions, is also described and illustrated by selected passages, so that the reader may have some idea of the general religious climate during this period. Every quotation is prefixed by a brief biography of the author and all passages have been translated into English, with explanatory comment when necessary. Connecting essays act as summaries and focus the attention on essential issues. These, together with a chronological chart and maps should enable a student coming fresh to the subject, without previous specialised knowledge, to see the period in historical perspective.

The Jews in Late Ancient Rome: Evidence of Cultural Interaction in the Roman Diaspora (Religions in the Graeco-Roman World)
Leonard Victor Rutgers Manufacturer: Brill Academic Pub ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 9004102698 |
Book Description
The Jews in Late Ancient Rome focusses on the Jewish community in third and fourth century Rome, and in particular on how this community related to the larger non-Jewish world that surrounded it. The book's point of departure is a refutation of the disputable thesis that Roman Jews lived in complete isolation. The book examines Jewish archaeological remains and Jewish funerary inscriptions from Rome from various angles, and compares them with Pagan and early Christian material and epigraphical remains. In the last part the author concentrates on an enigmatic legal treatise entitled the Collatio, identifying its author and exploring the implications of this identification. This study proposes a new way in which the relationship between Jews and non-Jews in late antiquity can be studied.

Studies in the Cult of Yahweh: New Testament, Early Christianity, and Magic (Religions in the Graeco-Roman World, Vol 130/2)
Morton Smith Manufacturer: Brill Academic Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 9004104798 |
Book Description
These two volumes collect some of the most influential and important scholarly essays by the late Morton Smith (1915-1991), for many years Professor of Ancient History at Columbia University in New York City. Smith was admired and feared for his extraordinary ability to look at familiar texts in unfamiliar ways, to re-open old questions, to pose new questions, and to demolish received truths. He practiced the "hermeneutics of suspicion" to devastating effect. His answers are not always convincing but his questions cannot be ignored. The essays of Volume I center on the Hebrew Bible ("Old Testament"), Ancient Israel and Ancient Judaism, of Volume II on the Christian Bible ("New Testament"), Early Christianity and Ancient Magic. Volume II also contains an assessment of Smith's scholarly achievement and a complete list of his publications.

Consumption, Population, and Sustainability: Perspectives From Science And Religion
Manufacturer: Island Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 155963748X |
Book Description
The combined contributions of science and religion to resolving environmental problems are far greater than each could offer working in isolation. Scientific findings are central to understanding the impact of human populations on the environment, but a more ecologically sustainable future will require radical changes in values, lifestyle choices, and consumption patterns-a revolution that falls squarely within the domain of the religious community.
Consumption, Population, and Sustainability is an outgrowth of a conference sponsored jointly by the Boston Theological Institute and the American Association for the Advancement of Science that brought together more than 250 scientists and people of religious faith to discuss the environmental impact of consumption patterns and population trends, and to consider alternative and more equitable value systems, economic arrangements, and technologies that will be necessary for achieving a more sustainable future. The Imaginary Girlfriend (Ballantine Reader's Circle)
John Irving Manufacturer: Ballantine Books ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0345458265 Release Date: 2002-12-03 |
Book Description
“The Imaginary Girlfriend is a miniature autobiography detailing Irving’s parallel careers of writing and wrestling. . . . Tales of encounters with writers (John Cheever, Nelson Algren, Kurt Vonnegut) are intertwined with those about his wrestling teammates and coaches. With humor and compassion, [Irving] details the few truly important lessons he learned about writing. . . . And in beefing up his narrative with anecdotes that are every bit as hilarious as the antics in his novels, Irving combines the lessons of both obsessions (wrestling and writing) . . . into a somber reflection on the importance of living well.”Customer Reviews:

Battle of Perryville, 1862: Culmination of the Failed Kentucky Campaign
Robert P. Broadwater Manufacturer: McFarland & Company ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 078642303X |
Book Description
In 1862, the Confederacy launched a campaign to sway the indecisive border state of Kentucky. Full of blunders and missed opportunities, this operation served only to convince the Kentuckians of what they suspected all along: The Confederacy, for all its braggadocio, was incapable of holding the state against determined Union forces. Among the bloodiest battles of the Civil War, Perryville was also one of the most decisive regarding Southern hopes to take the war into Union territory.Compiled from firsthand sources such as letters, diaries and regimental histories, this book tells the story of the South's ill-fated attempt to bring Kentucky into the Confederacy. From planning to completion, it details the military movements of both Union and Confederate forces, including the battles of Richmond and Mumfordsville. The main focus of the work, however, is the biggest battle of the campaignPerryville. Here, inexperience on both sides and the lack of cohesive Confederate action turned what could easily have been a Southern victory into a disheartening retreat, forever relegating General Braxton Bragg, who had the makings of a Confederate hero, to the annals of military mediocrity. Appendices include detailed lists of Confederate and Union commands, strategic placement of the inexperienced regiments and Perryville casualties. Contemporary photographs and an index are also included.
