2 out of 5 stars good start, terrible finish.......2002-01-08

The first part of the book is excellent at describing the soul mate phenomena. This includes the various forms and helps provide an understanding on why people come into your life for whom there is an unmistakable connection beyond the apparent. My problem with the book is that at this point it is as if the publisher needed more pages to fill the book. The sections on finding and attracting a soul mate seem totally counter to the very idea that soul mates enter you life when they are destined to do so. The section on attracting your soul mate belongs on soulmates.com or some personals site. When the book digressed into ranting about how super models are overly thin and not the way "real" women look I found myself wondering if I dozed off and then picked up another book. What this is doing in there I have no idea. The first half gets 4 stars, the second zero. A caveat, several trusted friends have found this book to be very beneficial. I just cannot say the same.

Iam so happy I bought this book I almost did not buy it because of the negetive review made buy a madame artiste, lukily I did
for this book is not based on the myers briggs it is based on the DISC wich for me is a much easier indicator of people and it is handled with inteligence and depth.Exelent exelent book dont mis it.

1 out of 5 stars This book is terrible........2001-03-20

I am so disappointed by this book. It was supposed to incorporate the Myers-Briggs typing into an in-depth analysis of the relationships between the types. It was very vague, not even bringing the types into discussion. It makes up 4 types that are extremely ill-defined. It repeats the scant indicies on these types over and over, using up pages so it looks like a thicker book. What a joke. Don't waste your time. It has very little, if anything, to do with Myers-Briggs and is so generalized it cannot truly help you.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it.......2000-08-31

This book is great. It's so much better than anything you get from a Keirsey book because instead of just stating that mercurial lovers should be with romantic lovers and innocents with steadfasts, it gives scenarios on how each of the four temperaments would act together in a relationship. It's great at describing all the potential conflicts in a relationship. I think anybody in a relationship would benefit from this book: it's just impossible not to be more aware of you and your partners complexes. If you're not familiar with type though, I suggest reading David Keirsey's Please Understand Me II. This book assumes you already know a lot of what's in there. For those familiar with Keirsey, the four different types the Quenks describe translate this way: Romantic=Idealist Mercurial=Rational Steadfast=Guardians Innocent=Artisans.

5 out of 5 stars Read before you get married or when you get divorced.......1999-06-19

This is a great book that helps us to quit pathologizing mates who drive us crazy. The naive idea exists that we can all get along with everyone, or: "if we can't get along - someone must be defective, and it can't be me!" This book helps put in perspective that we are all different and unique. There is nothing wrong with being a thinker, or feeler - a sensible practical person, or a big picture visionary person. The very traits that drive us crazy are admired by others.

I don't like the labels they chose for the types, (what romantic wants to be labeled innocent when they are 40? Or mercurical for that matter) But the types still hold true. And all lovers like to think of themselve as romantic. Not just Intuitive Feelers.

I am a mediator who helps divorcing couples work out separation agreements. I believe the divorce rate will never go down until we start marriage counseling earlier. Not at 40, or 30, or even when you book the church for the wedding. I believe that marriage counseling should start when we are 12 - the first time we look at that cute guy/babe in 7th grade, and wonder and dream of fairy tale endings.

One last plea -- if you have kids, and you are divorced, and you typically "dis" your ex either loudly, or even in subtle ways, STOP. I understand that the two of you got along like bleach and ammonia. Stop anyway. And realize that you are actually putting your children down. You are assuring your children's future divorces will be a done deal by the time they graduate. Try treating your ex with respect, tolerance, and plenty of distance. Read this book and accept that people are different. Real different.

But Perfect Strangers is more than a how-to book. It contains the stories and photographs of people who met their soul mates on the Internet, most after having nearly given up on ever finding love. Book Description

From the moment that the M4 Sherman had been matched against German Panther and Tiger tanks, the American tank crews had known that their vehicles were outclassed by the opposition. What was needed was a more powerful tank, more heavily armed and armored, that could take-on the powerful German panzers on a more equal footing. Although it took time to develop by the latter months of the war numbers of M26 Pershing tanks were reaching the frontline US armored units. Well armored and with a powerful 90mm gun the Pershing was a match for any tank in the German order of battle.

3 out of 5 stars Basic info only.......2006-07-01

This book has very detailed technical specs and performance data which is complete. Unfortunately the photographs fall short in the detail department (especially close-ups of the
attachments/mounting points, external details) which are useful for anyone doing a replica, which is 90% of the reason for purchase. The side profiles are basic line drawings without the overhead, left, right, front and rear views that provide needed details.
But for the price you get general info that is available for free on the internet as well as B/W photos(that could be enhanced for better clarity) and 3-5 artist renderings(very excellent). Over all a good value for the price.

4 out of 5 stars Another Zaloga Masterwork.......2004-02-02

I'm very impressed with the developmental details leading up to the M26 Pershing tank, and the preponderance of incredibly crisp photographs are simply amazing. I recognize many Korean War pictures from Jim Mesko's Armor in Korea, and the clarity of the same photos in Zaloga's book is a night-and-day difference.

Again, plentiful details on World War Two deployment, from Operation Zebra to the close of hostilities. Just a little more detail on the immediate post-war disposition of these tanks would have been appreciated.

After such intricate coverage of the Pershing's development, even including self-propelled artillery derivatives that weren't put into production, the M46 Patton and M26A1 modifications appear rushed and lacking in essential details. I can't blame Zaloga for not including exact production quantities except 360 M46A1s, as other sources can't seem to pin those numbers down either. One thing I definitely would have appreciated was information on which models served with which units with the occupation forces in Germany, and when they were withdrawn.

The Korean War gets multi-page coverage, but outside of initial deployment during 1950 there is insufficient information on units that traded in Chaffees and Shermans for Pershings and Pattons, or specifics on the withdrawal of Pershings other than "the M26 had been declared 'limited standard' before the outbreak of the Korean War and was retired from service shortly after" (p.42). Shortly after the war, or after the outbreak of the war? How many M45 close support howitzer tanks served in that war, and when were they withdrawn? Did the M46 Patton replace both the Sherman and the Pershing, and if so, when? "The M46 and M46A1 were declared obsolete in February 1957 and were retired from service..." does not illustrate the fact that M46s continued to serve in reduced numbers with battle group assault gun platoons after the two remaining divisions in-theater were reorganized to the Pentomic structure in 1957. Of course that's picking nits in a ten dollar book, but these nits prevent me from giving a full five stars to an otherwise excellent book on the development and service of the M26 Pershing and M46 Patton.

5 out of 5 stars A good value for the money.......2002-09-24

The M26 Pershing was the US Army's belated answer to the German Panther and Tiger tanks. Until the invasion of France the US thought their "Tank Destroyer" arm would defend against Nazi armor while the obsolescent Sherman tank would be used to exploit breakthroughs. The close fighting in the hedgerow country of Normandy showed the flaws in this policy and urgent requests went out for a better armed and better protected tank. The Ordnance dDepartment's answer was the T26E3 (later M26) which had been in development. The tank, nicknamed "Pershing", was rushed into production and early examples arrived in Europe late in the war. The Pershing also proved to be a powerful asset in Korea when facing the Soviet T34 tanks used by North Korea.

The recent release of a model of America's M26 Pershing tank led to several new books coming out on this little-know armored vehicle. If I have to choose only one of the new crop I would pick this one. Mr. Zaloga is a dedicated researcher and is very knowledgeable on combat vehicles and their histories. In a thumbnail Zaloga traces development of the new tank and then looks at how the Pershing was used in WW2 and Korea.

For a modest price the reader gets a history of the tank and color scheme information. The Osprey Vanguards are not meant to be the "final word" on any vehicle, but serve as modestly priced, readily available references. This is one of the best in that series.

5 out of 5 stars No skeletons.......2002-07-27

This tank could have made a great diferens in een early ending of the war. This book makes this statement.
The pictures are of an high detail.

4 out of 5 stars Quite a good book but. . ........2001-06-20

it still takes a back-seat to R. P. Hunnicut's exhaustive and complete book, "Pershing: a History of the Medium Tank".

What this slender book does have is some good info (little of which is new) and a lot of excellent, clear pictures. It's an excellent reference on the tank and a worthy addition to the series.

      Book Description

Both a celebration and a call to arms, this powerful book is the story of one human birth and the frightening ways we are now putting this miraculous process at risk.

A brilliant writer, first-time mother, and respected biologist, Sandra Steingraber tells the month-by-month story of her own pregnancy, weaving in the new knowledge of embryology, the intricate development of organs, the emerging architecture of the brain, and the transformation of the mother's body to nourish and protect the new life. At the same time, she shows all the hazards that we are now allowing to threaten each precious stage of development, including the breast-feeding relationship between mothers and their newborns. In the eyes of an ecologist, the mother's body is the first environment, the mediator between the toxins in our food, water, and air and her unborn child.

Never before has the metamorphosis of a few cells into a baby seemed so astonishingly vivid, and never before has the threat of environmental pollution to conception, pregnancy, and even to the safety of breast milk been revealed with such clarity and urgency. In Having Faith, poetry and science combine in a passionate call to action.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A captivating and informative read.......2007-08-23

This book is one of the most informative books you will read about pregnancy and the early months of your baby's life and not with the information that you will find in your other books. Instead this book begins to unravel the mysteries of the womb and the world while captivating all of the magic. The author guides you through information that is sometimes scary, sometimes ecstatic and in a lesser writer's hands might be overwhelming, but instead is inspirational. Beautifully written--you won't be able to put it down!

      5 out of 5 stars MUST READ!!!!!.......2007-06-03

This book is excellent. Well written, entertaining, and exceedingly well-researched. If you read only one book before becoming pregnant, this is the ONE. It's also great for learning about the neonatal effects of environmental contaminants to which we are all exposed. It's a little scary, but honest, and you'll be wiser for having read it. I really cannot say enough good things about this book. Definitely a favorite, and definitely a MUST READ!

5 out of 5 stars Having Faith: An Ecologist's Journey to Motherhood.......2005-09-09

I saw the author, Sandra Steingraber, speak at a conference this summer. She was an engaging speaker and her book did not disappoint me. It was very well written. She handled the scientific subject with wit and humor and imparted the technical knowledge to laymen with ease. I am looking forward to reading more works from this author.

      5 out of 5 stars Favorite Book.......2005-09-09

I think that all people should read this book- especially women who will one day be mothers. Some of the stories of birth defects are a little hard to handle during pregnancy, but should be told to all women of child-bearing age. I love Steingraber's mix of her personal stories of pregnancy and birth, with the stories of the natural world, and with scientific investigation. She is a talented author and insightful person. This is a must read! I tell everyone I know about this book, and am enjoying reading it again during my first pregnancy.

5 out of 5 stars Like the jacket says - intimate and strong.......2005-04-27

Currently pregnant, I hesitated to read this book because I didn't want to become more paranoid than I already am about various environmental problems. I was impressed by both Steingraber's voice - the intimate telling of her own story is funny, telling, and compelling without any of the other details - and with the unremitting rigor with which she marshals her facts. Instead of being overwhelemed by information on one or the other side of various US environmental debates, I found that the author brings a very well-researched and sensible perspective to the conversation. Beautifully written as well as informative - well worth my time.

        Book Description

From the boardroom to the Beltway, questions of character are making the headlines. Does it matter what kind of person you are if you're doing a good job? In this environment of moral ambivalence, does character count for anything? You bet it does. In this intriguing new book, a successful businessman and former West Point professor argue that you can never escape your character. With inspiring stories, the authors use lessons from military history to explain why when all else is equal, the better person will always win. A Question of Character harks back to the original American spirit of honesty, integrity, ingenuity and perseverance. Excellent Book! This book is well written and a pleasure to read. The authors take a challenging topic--the value of good character--and very clearly demonstrate through historical examples the benefits of developing this foundation for good leadership. They use great examples that are intertwined and continuously reinforce the points being made. This is a compelling and inspiring book about leadership, not history.

5 out of 5 stars IT'S NOT ALWAYS TECHNOLOGY THAT WINS THE BATTLE !.......1999-01-26

NOT REALLY A FAN OF MILITARY HISTORY, BUT FOUND THE EARLY RELEASE ON THIS BOOK--LITERALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO PUT DOWN. IT WAS GREAT TO SEE FAMOUS PEOPLE IN HISTORY WIN BY THE CONTENT OF THEIR CHARACTER, NOT JUST BY THE COLOR OF THEIR MONEY OR TOYS !

WE SEE THE FAILURES OF CHARACTER EVERYWHERE TODAY, THIS WAS A BREATH OF FRESH AIR..

5 out of 5 stars Putting history to practical business use.......1998-12-28

Maybe if history was taught with this kind of flare in high school we all would have paid closer attention. However, the thrust of this book is not a history lesson but practical business advice that can be garnered from the success and failures of others in certain historical events. The one element that makes itself clear through this book (which is a quick read with some heavy thoughts) is that character is timeless and is what ultimately determines the success or failure of an individual or organization. "Character" is a useful book no matter what stage of your career you are in as it provides a look into common human characteristics that often confirm one's own findings or identifies potential shortcomings that may not be so visible. My only criticism is that some of the historical content can be hard to follow at times. The main value I see in this book is that it draws lessons from substance.

        Book Description

Of the world's biggest 100 economies, 51 are corporations, not countries. As the most powerful institution of our time, the multinational corporation dominates not only global economics, but politics and culture as well. But the mechanisms of corporate control and the details of corporate abuses have remained largely hidden from public perception-until now.

In this compelling collection of columns, investigative journalists Russell Mokhiber and Robert Weissman critique corporate power from a relentlessly human perspective. While mainstream media cheerfully laud big business's record profits, Mokhiber and Weissman ask the real questions-Where is profit coming from? When working Americans' incomes have dropped dramatically since 1980, while salaries of corporate CEOs have risen 500 percent in the same period, is the economy really booming? Whose economy is this, anyway?

From union-busting to food irradiation, from faulty air bags that kill but are left on the market anyway to judges who take bribes, from the IMF to oil companies-wherever corporate crime strikes, Mokhiber and Weissman are there, covering an amazing range of issues, to sound the alarm and call people to action.

        Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars collection of recycled newsletter columns, not a real book.......2000-05-02

The text, after the three page intro by Nader, consists of 202 pages with some cartoons as well as section title pages included, followed by a ten page index that includes subjects and publications as well as names.

Mokhiber is the editor of the "Corporate Crime Reporter" and Weissman is the editor of the "Multinational Monitor." The text of the book consists of 60 articles taken from these two periodicals divided into eight sections as follows:

        1. Corporate Crime and Violence

        2. The Corporate Attack on Democracy

        3. The Global Hunt for Mega-Profits

        4. Corporation Nation

        5. The Big Boys Unite: Merger Mania in the 1990's

        6. Commercialism Run Amok

        7. Of Sweatshops and Union Busting

        8. Do I Have to Arrest You? Corporations and the Law

As a collection of news columns, the book consists of anecdotes with conclusions that tend toward hyperbole, but for the most part are accurate, if a bit emotionalized. Since each article was written for the intended audience of subscribers to the two periodicals (the date is indicated at the beginning of each), they read like they are preaching to the converted. No neoliberal will be convinced of such a statement as:

"Most corporate criminologists agree that corporate crime and violence inflicts far more damage on society than all street crime combined. That includes killings and deaths."

The authors provide no non-anecdotal evidence for what might seem an astounding statement, but I have read widely enough to know that it is essentially true, depending on how you define "corporate crime." This assertion is repeated twice elsewhere, indicating little or no editing before assembly here. A few of the articles are followed by a one or two paragraph update bearing on events that happened between original publication and the date this book went to press. There are no footnotes, and scant reference to any sources for their information. I suppose if you have access to Nexus or something similar, you could do a date-limited search (based on when the article was written) to find out more.

It would have been nice if Mokhiber and Weissman had provided an over-arching introductory essay of, say, 20 pages, giving an overview of the problems involving the ever-increasing expansion of corporate behemoths, drawing a relationship between relative power and systemic greed-driven flaunting of the law, and putting into historical context the privatization of profits and socialization of costs. It was lazy and irresponsible of them not to do this, and that is why it gets only three stars.

The book is a quick and fascinating read, but I recommend you check it out from your local library. That's what I did!

5 out of 5 stars Documents Need for Corporate Governance Reform.......2000-02-28

Mokhiber and Weissman provide plenty of potential fuel for the fire with their insightful discussions on corporate chartering, democracy for sale, and Constitutional abuses. Unlike many, they name names and reference credible sources. Unless the dangers of corporate dominance are addressed, we can expect books such as Corporate Predators to become very popular during the next economic downturn. Read it now and not only avoid the rush, avoid the dangers they point to so well.

        4 out of 5 stars One-star, long-winded review misses the point.......1999-07-22

The one-star, long-winded review offered below by Greg Peisert almost entirely misses the point of this rich and rewarding book. Peisert's comment cites low unemployment in the United States, but ignores the atrocious condition of overseas work for American corporations and the proliferation of unlivable-wage jobs here at home. Both of these trends are well-documented in "Corporate Predators". You may also notice that Peisert's refutation of the book is based upon cases in which one corporation succumbs to another; he forgets the subject matter of the book is the treatment of workers by corporations, not the treatment of corporations by one another. As the book documents, the treatment of many workers by their employers has become simply shameful, and much of this trend is due to the rise of de facto corporate government here and world-wide. A book well worth reading, and one that's long overdue.

5 out of 5 stars INTRODUCTION by RALPH NADER.......1999-06-15

For the past twenty years, after a decade and a half of populist resurgence against corporate abuses by consumer, environmental, women's rights and civil rights forces, big business has been on a rampage to control our society. Whether these business supremacies are called corporatization, commercialism, monopolies or the corporate state, the overall concentration of power and wealth in ever fewer multinational corporate centers is a matter of record.

In arena after arena -- government, workplace, marketplace, media, environment, education, science, technology-- the dominant players are large corporations. What countervailing forces that our society used to depend upon for some balance are not in retreat against the aggressive expansion of corporate influence far beyond its traditional mercantile boundaries?

The enlarged power that corporations deploy to further increase their revenues and socialize their costs comes from many sources -- old and new. Roughly eighty percent of the money contributed to federal candidates come from business interests. The mobility to export capital has given transnational companies major leverage against local, state and federal officials, not to mention against organized and unorganized labor. The swell of corporate welfare handouts has reached new depths. The contrived complexity of many financial and other services serves to confuse, deplete and daunt consumers who lose significant portions of their income in a manipulative marketplace. Alliances, joint ventures and other complex collaborations between should-be competitors have made a mockery of what is left of antitrust enforcement.

The opportunities to control or defeat governmental attempts for corporate accountability that flow from transcending national jurisdictions into globalized strategies to escape taxation and pit countries and their workers against one another appear to be endless. The autocratic systems of governance called GATT and NAFTA reflect to the smallest detail ways that giant corporations wish to control the world. These firms are on a collision course against democratic processes, and the merging of states and businesses, to the latter's advantage, weakens relentlessly both the restraints of the law and the willingness of legislators to do anything about it.

Taken together, the world is witnessing its subjugation to the large corporate model of economic development, the large corporate model of technology and the large corporate model of culture itself. These accelerating trendlines invite accelerating comprehension and response. History demonstrates that commercialism knows few boundaries that are not externally imposed. All the major religions have warned their adherents against the excesses of commercial value systems, albeit with different languages, images and metaphors.

Specific descriptions of corporate misbehavior do nourish proper generalizations that in turn lead to more just movements and practices. Here, columnists Russell Mokhiber and Robert Weissman provide a distinct service in Corporate Predators. It is not just the versatility of their writings -- covering bribery, pollution, corporate crime, fraud and abuse, failure of law enforcement, union-busting, the mayhem inflicted by product defects and toxics, the deep gap between the rich and the rest of America, corporate front groups, the media censorship and self-censorship, the profiteering, the pillaging overseas and more-- but it is also the impact on the reader that comes from aggregating evidence. Our country does not collect statistics on corporate crime e way it does on street crime. For it to do so would begin to highlight a little-attended agenda for law enforcement and other corporate reforms. Neither Congress nor the White House and its Justice Department have made any moves over the years to assemble from around the country the abuses of corporations in quantifiable format so as to drive policy.

So, description -- accurate, representational description -- must now suffice. As the editor of the Corporate Crime Reporter (Mokhiber)and the editor of the Multinational Monitor (Weissman), the authors know well the difference between anecdotes that are illustrative and that are idiosyncratic. This volume of their weekly columns carries the evidence that illustrates patterns of continuing corporate derelictions, not lonely deviations from a more congenial norm.

The authors' experience over the years with the impact of disclosures has led them to the conclusion that the facts must be linked to civic engagement and democratic activity for change. If disclosure produced its own dynamic imperatives for change, the recurrent exposure of corporate abuses in such mainstream publications as the Wall Street Journal, Business Week and some national television programs like Sixty Minutes would have caused these changes. Such, unfortunately has not been the case. The linkages between knowledge and action have not been sufficient. But readers of Common Courage Press published books tend towards citizen activism. They want to know because they want to do. Some may even agree with the ancient Chinese saying that "To know and not to do is not to know."

So, go forward readers who wish to be leaders in the advancement of justice -- what Daniel Webster once called "the great work of men on Earth"-- and savor the writings that will motivate more and more women and men to band together in organizations that build a more just democracy.

        Ralph Nader, 1999

4 out of 5 stars Refuting irrational, profit driven pseudo-science.......1999-05-01

While the gentleman bellow makes some good points about a balance that should be maintained in this type of work, I think that some level of extreme is needed in a counter attack against the un-emotional, profit driven pseudo-science that staunch capitalists spout as if pure Capitalism and the so-called "free market" were the only option this world has. If the previous reviewer were realy concerned about balance and fairness, then he would recognize that some level of emotion is needed to help the people of the world achieve some level of economic and social equality. The rapidly growing gap between rich and poor is an obvious result of the type of socialism for the wealthy and capitalism for the poor that exists in this country, and this book does a good job of exemplifying the extreme consequences of this situation. Besides, Capitalism is just a eco-philosophical theory espoused as science.

          Book Description

The North Carolina Shore and Its Barrier Islands is the latest volume in the series, Living with the Shore. Replacing an earlier volume, this thoroughly new book provides a diverse guide to one of America’s most popular shorelines. As is true for all books in the series, it is based on the premise that understanding the changing nature of beaches and barrier islands is essential if we are to preserve them for future generations.
Evidence that the North Carolina shore is changing is never hard to find, but recently the devastation wrought by Hurricane Fran and the perilous situation of the historic lighthouse at Cape Hatteras have reminded all concerned of the fragility of this coast. Arguing for a policy of intelligent development, one in which residential and commercial structures meet rather than confront the changing nature of the shore, the authors have included practical information on hazards of many kinds—storms, tides, floods, erosion, island migration, and earthquakes. Diagrams and photographs clearly illustrate coastal processes and aid in understanding the impact of hurricanes and northeasters, wave and current dynamics, as well as pollution and other environmental destruction due to overdevelopment. A chapter on estuaries provides related information on the shores of back barrier areas that are growing in popularity for recreational residences. Risk maps focus on the natural hazards of each island and together with construction guidelines provide a basis for informed island management. Lastly, the dynamics of coastal politics and management are reviewed through an analysis of the controversies over the decision to move the Cape Hatteras lighthouse and a proposed effort to stabilize Oregon Inlet.
From the natural and historic perspective of the opening chapters to the regional discussions of individual barrier islands, this book is both a primer on coastal processes for the first time visitor as well as a guide to hazard identification for property owners.
