Don't wait until a loved one or even you have a stroke to learn about it. If a loved one has already suffered a stroke, you will need to be informed.

We are all at risk for stroke and being present when someone else shows the signs of a stroke. As neurologists say when referring to the importance of quick action when someone is suffering a stroke: Time is brain.

This inexpensive book is an easy read and an excellent resource for educating yourself about stroke. Highly recommended!

Book Description

From 1895 to 1898, Cuban insurgents fought to free their homeland from Spanish rule. Though often overshadowed by the "Splendid Little War" of the Americans in 1898, the longer Spanish-Cuban conflict, according to John Tone, was in fact more remarkable, foreshadowing the wars of decolonization in the twentieth century.

Employing newly released evidence, including hospital records, intercepted Cuban letters, battle diaries from both sides, and Spanish administrative records, Tone offers new answers to old questions concerning the war. He examines the origin of Spain's genocidal policy of "reconcentration"; the causes of Spain's military difficulties; the condition, effectiveness, and popularity of the Cuban insurgency; the necessity of American intervention; and Spain's supposed foreknowledge of defeat.

The Spanish-Cuban-American war proved pivotal in the histories of all three countries involved. Tone's fresh analysis will provoke new discussions and debates among historians and human rights scholars as they reexamine the war in which the concentration camp was invented, Cuba was born, Spain lost its empire, and America gained an overseas empire.

3 out of 5 stars Summary for the defense of the indefensible.......2007-03-08

Tone, John Lawrence 2006 War and Genocide in Cuba, 1895-1898 The University of North Carolina Press, Chapel Hill. ISBN-10 0807830062 ISBN-13: 978-0807830062

This is an interesting book, but I find it misleading. In a laudable attempt to present all sides of the circumstance of genocide in during the Cuban Wars of Independence, the author has relied too heavily on data from dubious sources. In addition the author seems to have made those ideological compromises that are the common currency paid to access Cuban government archives. Examples of this follow (page numbers refer to hard copy edition).

Gerardo Machado on page 198 is mentioned as being mainly rustler citing Spanish sources, a matter generally considered alleged but not proven, but there is no mention of Machado's far more prominent career in independent Cuba. Quintín Banderas' "diary" is cited as probable source in the footnotes of Chapter Thirteen (footnote 43 p. 305) without the consideration that Banderas was one of the few Cuban war leaders who was considered illiterate.

Tone's ideological stance is made very apparent when in the very last paragraph of the book (p. 287) he makes is appear that the Spanish military was uniquely criminal in the vicious and cruel Spanish Civil War, ignoring the circumstance that the author's "striking Spanish workers," had also been murderous and indiscriminate in their killings.

Tone tends to label members of the social structures he apparently disapproves of non-neutral terms, for instance he labels owners of sugar plantations and mills as "sugar baron" (e.g. p. 16) evoking a inaccurate medieval image such as the Norman barons at Runnymede. He, as is unfortunately only too common among non-Cuban historians dealing with Cuba, labels rural inhabitants as peasants (e.g. p. 21), ignoring the very real fact that the Güajiros, commonly rode horses, and were usually armed with at least a machete, circumstances usually denied to European peasants.

However, aside from the classist but common use of the term peasant, instead of Güajiro for the rural inhabitants of Cuba, the author does makes a excellent point that the rural inhabitants of eastern Cuba were different, diverse and independent (pp. 21-22 and others).

Tone offers excuses for Spanish government actions in this regard (p. 23 ) citing British action in South Africa (a lesser but sad event), and not documented references to U.S. actions in the Philippines and Vietnam. This is most odd, since the author does not mention the massive horrors of Soviet actions such as in the Ukraine, Mao's actions in China, and the killing fields of Cambodia. The Armenian genocides roughly contemporary to the events described in this book, are also not mentioned.

Thus, in summary one can only accept the author's (see pp. 209-223 and others) constantly cited 170,000 figure for Cuban civilian dead in la Re-concentracion as a minimal figure for this horrible time. None the less this book is useful given its scholarship, but only if one considers it to be a "summary for the defense of the indefensible."

    Book Description

There have always been homeless people, but only in the twentieth century have refugees become an important part of international politics, seriously affecting relations between states. Since the 1880s, the number of displaced persons has climbed astronomically, with people scattered over vaster distances and for longer periods of time than ever before. Tracing the emergence of this new variety of collective alienation, The Unwanted covers everything from the late nineteenth century to the present, encompassing the Armenian refugees, the Jews, the Spanish Civil War émigrés, the Cold War refugees in flight from Soviet states, and much more. Marrus shows not only the astounding dimensions of the subject but also depicts the shocking apathy and antipathy of the international community toward the homeless. He also examines the impact of refugee movements on Great Power diplomacy and considers the evolution of agencies designed to assist refugees, noting outstanding successes and failures.

This book is a solid addition to a Pediatrician, Dermatologist or aspiring medical student's library. The pictures are detailed, and the accompanying text is nicely organized. The CD-ROM is a pleasant addition, as it has "slide-show" capabilities where you pick certain images to show. I use this function to teach residents and medical students. Overall, a great purchase!

5 out of 5 stars Great for busy clinic doc.......2006-01-26

The best thing about this book is the differential diagnosis found inside the front and back covers. Determine the type of lesion you are looking at (vessicular, papular, etc) and it gives you a good differential subdivided by age. In my mind, a must have for a busy clinic or teaching program, in addition to Hurwitz. Weakness is somewhat superficial on treatment.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful textbook for pediatric dermatology.......2000-06-03

This book is covers a very concise and clear area of Pediatric Dermatology. The index is easy to use and photographs are clear. It should be a very useful reference book for any busy pediatric practice or for those pediatric residents studying for the Pediatric Boards.

          Book Description

Bobby Griffith was an all-American boy ...and he was gay. Faced with an irresolvable conflict-for both his family and his religion taught him that being gay was "wrong"-Bobby chose to take his own life.

Prayers for Bobby, nominated for a 1996 Lambda Literary Award, is the story of the emotional journey that led Bobby to this tragic conclusion. But it is also the story of Bobby's mother, a fearful churchgoer who first prayed that her son would be "healed," then anguished over his suicide, and ultimately transformed herself into a national crusader for gay and lesbian youth.

As told through Bobby's poignant journal entries and his mother's reminiscences, Prayers for Bobby is at once a moving personal story, a true profile in courage, and a call to arms to parents everywhere.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars All Too True.......2007-01-19

If you have ever known a family who has lost a youth or child to suicide because of sexual orientation, you probably don't have a clue as to the pain the family experiences. Prayers for Bobby moves you to tears, but then to joy as the author tells of her total condemnation of Bobby in his orientation while living; to the change of heart following his death by suicide. Society needs to come to terms with the truth concering the pain many youth and children in the GLBT community experience. This is a must read for the uninformed!

5 out of 5 stars Homosexuality is not "wrong" in the Bible............2005-07-03

Although my heart goes out to this mother and the reviewer, Mary Mother God's Servant, the latter is simply wrong in stating that the Bible and God condemns homosexuality. There are several scholars and many books that will give you the true translation of the Bible based on the culture and what it meant at the time. A good book to start with is: What the Bible Really Says about Homosexuality, by Daniel Helminiak. The mother in this story is indeed a very courageous woman to do what she has done, and don't worry, your son is in heaven, and I'm sure he understands and forgives you.

          5 out of 5 stars For "jolie1015".......2005-06-21

The only "pain in homosexuality" is caused by those who insist on saying it is a "lifestyle", "a sin", "shameful". It is things like that which result in making life painful for gay people, particularly when said by parents to a child. How would you feel if your parents had brought you up telling you day after day that the way you feel or act is "wrong, sinful, an abomination"? Would that not hurt you? Well, that's why kids kill themselves, they can't deal with being told how horrible they are. And even if they don't take that final step, many are scarred for life.

Rather than trying to force the child to change (which is NOT possible, regardless of what Exodus and the others say), I suggest following the teaching of Jesus, and showing unconditional love and support. Leading a child into self-loathing is NOT love, not by any definition of the word. It is destructive. And as this book shows, the destructive can often be fatal.

I am deeply grateful to have been born to more enlightened parents or I would not be alive today. It is hard enough as it is, with society as a whole condemning who I am, but at least I had my parents' support. They did not understand, no, but they did not lead me to hate myself, as so many do, as Exodus and such organizations do.

5 out of 5 stars Gut Wrenching, Could not put it down.......2003-12-06

As soon as a child comes out to their parents this book should become required reading for the parents. It shows the struggles of a boy between his religion, family and his own sexuality. Somehow the family considered themselves the same as their religion and forgot their role as parent and unconditional love. The son paid for it from his agony and eventual suicide. This book will rip at you, it is an emotional read. It is a necessary read.

5 out of 5 stars Tragedy leads to understanding and outreach.......2003-06-28

Aarons does a superior job in weaving together the complex, multi-dimensional story of the Griffith family, and the subsequent metamorphosis of Mary Griffith following the suicide of her son, Bobby. The book documents the ignorance, intolerance and hate found in much of society in the United States, as well as in many fundamentalist Christian churches as it relates to homosexuality. Aarons reveals much about Bobby's agony - we learn first hand through numerous quotes from his personal journal and through interviews with the family and friends. It is wonderful that Mary was able to evolve personally and spiritually. Her outreach to the gay community has been wonderful. Mary's message to young gay people everywhere to "not give up on love" is very poignant, profound, and timely.

                  Book Description

Although a hangover from World War 2, the seemingly antiquated Douglas B-26 Invader 'bombing twin' proved to be one of the hardest-worked assets employed by United Nations' forces in Korea for the duration of the conflict. Capable of dropping bombs and napalm, firing off unguided rockets or simply strafing targets with its battery of up to 14 nose-mounted 0.5-in Browning M-3 machine guns, the B-26 was equally as effective either during the day or at night. Indeed, the vast percentage of Invader mission were flown during the hours of darkness, for it was the only USAF ground-attack aircraft capable of attacking truck convoys and trains with precision. Over 200 bomber and reconnaissance variants saw action in Korea, and many were adorned with some of the most colourful nose-art ever carried by American combat aircraft in any war - this volume features a gallery of this impressive artwork. Accompanying the photos are detailed captions, plus a concise text outlining the use of the Invader. Many first-hand accounts from pilots that saw action in the B-26 are also included, as is a full appendices listing of the various units that served in Korea. Finally, aircraft specifications and a double-page cutaway complete this volume.

                  Book Description

Many see China and the United States on the path to confrontation. The Chinese leadership violates human rights norms. It maintains a harsh rule in Tibet, spars aggressively with Taiwan, and is clamping down on Hong Kong. A rising power with enormous assets, China increasingly considers American interests an obstacle to its own. But, the authors argue, the United States is the least of China's problems. Despite its sheer size, economic vitality, and drive to upgrade its military forces, China remains a vulnerable power, crowded on all sides by powerful rivals and potential foes. As it has throughout its history, China faces immense security challenges, and their sources are at and within China's own borders. China's foreign policy is calibrated to defend its territorial integrity against antagonists who are numerous, near, and strong. The authors trace the implications of this central point for China's relations with the United States and the rest of the world.

5 out of 5 stars Great for understanding China's foreign policy.......2007-09-19

As far as I'm concerned, this book does an excellent job detailing China's foreign policy. From relations with the West to African affairs, Nathan and Ross are able to concisely explain the importance of each relationship and the dangers confronting China. Furthermore, they also touch on the internal security concerns that the Chinese government must confront. This is a great book to read for people interested in China's foreign policy and what impacts it has on the world.

3 out of 5 stars useful but flawed.......2001-09-14

National security is a term we're used to hearing in the United States, but with rare exception "security threats" are in fact threats to America's vast informal empire abroad (military bases, troop deployments, the security of client regimes and business interests). As Ross and Nathan ably show, this is emphatically not the case for China. Even though "China is stronger today and its borders more secure than at any other time in the last 150 years", it continues to face a bewildering array of vulnerabilities -- from internal unrest to border insecurity to economic instability.

This book is a good corrective to the growing right-wing trend of playing up the "China threat". Ross and Nathan make clear that China's goals are not particularly ambitious and their capabilities so limited that even if the sinister cabal of Communists plotting against America's beneficent reign were real, it would be hard pressed to act out its evil intentions. Chapter 8, in particular, demolishes the idea that China's military will any time soon provide a real challenge to Japan, much less the USA.

Despite the great service Ross and Nathan provide in refuting the containment school's arguments, this book also has basic problems. Because it is a survey, the authors can only superficially treat each of the many issues raised. They do a good job of integrating history and current events, and the book should be quite useful for those mostly unfamiliar with its topics, but for those with more detailed knowledge it will often by unsatisfying.

Second, the authors use the national security paradigm to orient their analysis, but seem unaware of the drawbacks to such an approach. "National" security indulges the false idea that all groups and individuals within a nation can share the same interests and that national leaders act, fundamentally, on behalf of the whole population. In reality security policies generally hurt the interests of some groups while advancing those of others, and China's leaders act to perpetuate their own power and the power of the Communist Party, and to protect the interests of the increasingly influential business elite. The authors' inability to consider such matters leads them to seriously downplay the ruling class's increasing economic exploitation of workers and its violent domination of ethnically non-Han peoples in East Turkestan/Xinjiang, Tibet/Xizang, and Inner Mongolia.

And finally, the authors approach the subject from the perspective of the engagement school, which has both strengths (discussed above) and very serious weaknesses. Proponents of engagement are ideologically incapable of seeing that the current global economic system is based on inequality, exploitation, and the denial of people's basic needs (food, health care, shelter) and that it is upheld by American military domination of other people. Ross and Nathan's ultimate recommendation, then, is that China be safely integrated into this system -- not because doing so will help the Chinese people, but because doing so removes a threat to the safe operation of a fundamentally unjust world order.

5 out of 5 stars reveals the vulnerability of the people's republic of china.......2001-07-28

Nathan and Ross have constructed an excellent book discussing the vulnerability of China. The book goes into great depth discussing issues such as: Taiwanese independence, nuclear proliferation, the strength of the chinese military, the necessity of U.S. intervention in Asia, the relationships existing between China and Japan or the two Koreas, Tibetan freedom, technological exchange with Pakistan. Ultimately, Nathan and Ross conclude that China is a weak and vulnerable country that is more concerned with maintaining its borders and internal stability than initiated a policy of imperialism. This book is a great edition for any student of Asian Politics. Easy to read.

5 out of 5 stars Must read for students of contemporary China.......2000-06-16

Andrew J. Nathan and Robert S. Ross's THE GREAT WALL AND THE EMPTY FORTRESS is a clearly and tightly written presentation of Chinese foreign policy and defense issues. It is as reliable in its treatment of aspects of the pre-modern Chinese state and society that impinged on the course of modern Chinese affairs as it is authoritative (and well documented) in its analysis of the contemporary Chinese situation. With books on contemporary Chinese affairs, one must be concerned with material becoming dated, but though this book is some four years old in content, nearly its entirety is nevertheless very relevant. Its treatment of Chinese-Taiwan relations, for instance, is still on the mark. Since the book was written before the restoration of Hong Kong to China, the reader will not be able to glean anything new about that situation here. However that may be, this book remains as "must reading" for any student of contemporary China. The reader will happily discover that the style is eminently readable.

                  5 out of 5 stars Mandatory reading........2000-02-03

This book should be mandatory reading for anybody interested in China, or in world politics. Nathan and Ross explain China's place in the international political arena, both froom Chinese perspective and from western point of view.

                  Excellent!

This pocket guide is very informative; however, every photograph inside this book of edible wild plants and herbs is black and white. This makes identifying plants and herbs a challenge.

                  5 out of 5 stars Surviving Anywhere.......2003-03-26

This book will fit nice and neatly in any backpack. It's a must if your traveling through these areas listed in the book.

It goes through what plants or parts of trees you can eat, how to cook them, in different nature settings (woods, tundra, seashore).

It also teaches about poisonous plants and a chapter on how
to find water then purify it.

                  Very intesting and informational book.
