Perfect diet for Summer!.......2004-06-09
I'm a watercolorist and a constant dieter. With all the talk of low carbs, I almost forgot the importance of fruits and vegetables to health and weight control until I found this book! Artist Mindy Weisel and her daughers present a very well balanced -- but beautiful approach -- to weight loss. I loved the recipes and the special skin care treatments at the end of each day. Color is an inspiring way to taste all the fruits and vegetables of summer! I lost weight slowly but steadily and felt better and better on The 7-Day Color Diet.
Book Description
This book is a systematic effort by leading international scholars to map the trends in major-power warfare and explore whether it is waxing or waning. The main point of departure is that major-power war as a historical institution is in decline. This does not mean, though, that wars between states are in general disappearing. While there is some convergence in the conclusions by individual authors, they are by no means unanimous about the trend. The articles explore different causes and correlates of the declining trend in major-power warfare, including the impact of the international structure, nuclear weapons, international law, multilateral institutions, sovereignty and value changes.
This book will be of considerable interest to advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students in international relations, security studies and war studies.

A Series of Essays on War in the Future.......2006-03-28
The twentieth century was basically a century of warfare. It began with World War I and didn't end until the collapse of the USSR near the end. Now it appears that the chances of a major war are almost zero. Who has the power to fight the United States in a major war? Even during the long Cold War the two major powers threatened each other, they fought some wars (ie Viet Nam) by proxy but there was relatively little Russian/American fighting. Why?
In this book a series of contributors from around the world have written articles that cover these questions. They discuss the impact of Nuclear Weapons both during the Cold War and in the future as non-national (al Queda) forces get the bomb. Nuclear weapons made everywhere the front line, including the places where the national leaders lived.
This book will be of interest to students in international relations, security studies, and military history. These students do not have to be formal students, but can be just interested individuals.
Book Description
Ninety-five everyday Americans share their unique, firsthand accounts of close encounters with greatness in this moving collection of essays, illustrated with historic photographs.
A 12-year-old boxer steps into the ring with a young Cassius Clay; six Vietnam soldiers assist in two amazing births; the Soviets attempt to recruit a young boy as a spy through an ad in a Dennis the Menace comic book; historian Stephen Ambrose accompanies a tipsy Joe McCarthy on a raid of the local library, hunting down Marxist propaganda. In this unforgettable collection of the very best of the long-running "My Brush with History" column from American Heritage magazine, the past comes to life from a plain and wonderfully honest perspective: the words of common Americans as they recount singular, magical moments that have stayed with them for the rest of their lives.
These stories of ordinary folks caught up in extraordinary circumstances range in subject from Hollywood to the military to world history, politics and popular culture. They are simple, poignant and unforgettable.
Product Description
Colorado Rockhounding is a complete guide to the state's rich and varied mineral, gemstone, and fossil sources. In Colorado, rockhounds may pick agate and petrified wood from the vast Great Plains, follow dinosaur tracks on hogback ridges, pan gold in mountain streams, hunt gemstones on towering peaks, and search for metal sulfide minerals in historic mining districts.

Buyer beware!.......2007-07-25
I spent most of the last week in the Salida/Buena Vista/Royal Gorge area, and wasted ALOT of money on gas trying to find some of the fantastic mine tailings dumps and rock shops claimed to be in the area by this book. When one of the most highly recommended rock shops turned out to have been closed for five years, I started to wonder. I realized this book is just a summary of articles from Rock and Gem magazine, and many date back to the 1960s or earlier (1917???)! This book should be classified as fiction. For that matter, a few months back I tried to contact the state of Utah for permission to pan in the easements, as recommended in an article in R & G. They were horrified and knew nothing about it! It is illegal in Utah to be in the easements unless it is an emergency. So those of you planning a trip out west, don't base your agenda on either of these sources! Mitchell is cheaper and more reliable.
very informative.......2007-04-08
This books makes for great reading, plus is a field guide. We haven't been able to go to the sites yet as of this year (because of all the snow lately here in Colorado) but we are looking forward to using the book in the upcoming summer months. The introduction has a lot of interesting information about the history of Colorado mining, mine safety, types of minerals that can be found, the way the Rockies were formed, dinosaurs, fossils, and warnings about private property, etc. So far we've really liked it, and can't wait to put it to use. Basic maps are shown of the areas, has b/w photos, and also has a small color-photo section that shows minerals and where they were found. Bought this toghther with the updated version of Kappele's Rockhounding guide. Would recommend for reading or guide.
2003 review.......2003-06-02
I am giving this book a three star rating, I believe that it was a five star rating when first published. My copy shows a copyright of 1994 and a fifth printing in 2000. I enjoyed the historic and background geology information provided by the author. It was good evening reading. I did have problems in locating the sites listed. Colorado has grown a bit since 1994. I prefer the detailed format in the falcon guides. They do not have the background Voynick's book does but they get you to most of the sites. In all cases I would like to see the authors show the dates they visited recommended sites.
Rocky Mountain HIGH!.......2001-05-21
Several years ago, I made a swing through Colorado and, as always, collected rocks and minerals [mainly for my class that I teach at a California high school]. This book was at my side and served me well, leading to many beautiful specimens [and two blown tires-it was an excellent trip]. I never failed to find a site and all sites were better than average quality. Warning: many of these sites are at high elevation and may involve a little hiking [I'm out of shape and stayed to the sites close to the roads and still had quite a haul]. As always, please collect respectfully and only in places where it is legal to collect.

Good and bad.......2005-10-01
The guidebook is useful in some ways, but woefully lacking in others. The organization uses precise mileage, which is helpful in finding the features Baars mentions. The geological cross-sections are clearly diagrammed and the prose is accessible to the layman. However, the photos are poor (mostly taken under the high-angle mid-day sun) and the lack of an index is absolutely unacceptable. Once you are on the road and have found the chapter, then it is easy to follow, but it is frustrating when trying to find a specific area or topic while reading/researching at home since there is no index to refer to.
A Roadside Geology on steriods.......2002-06-18
This is another of Donald Baars' series of excellent geology books. Centered on the Four Corners, the Colorado Plateau displays some of the most varied and spectacular geology found anywhere.
To make reading and understanding easier, the author divides the Plateau into seven smaller units, e.g. the Paradox Basin. Each section begins with an explanation of its geologic history then identifies every rock formation seen along what appears to be every road that crosses it. This latter is done at a level of detail I've seen only one other place (Roadside Kansas by Buchannan and McCauley).
If you enjoy knowing just what you're looking at when you drive through this area or, like me, have a developed a hobby of collecting rock samples, this is a marvelously useful book.
Customer Reviews:
A glossary and index round out this excellent traveling companion.......2007-04-11
Intended especially for travelers and vacationers interested in taking in Colorado's geological sites, yet accessible to budding geologists everywhere, Roadside Geology of Colorado is now in an updated second edition with new tours of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, Rocky Mountain National Park, Dinosaur National Monument, and much more. Written in nontechnical terminology for lay readers, and featuring numerous two-color maps and black-and-white photographs, Roadside Geology of Colorado is filled cover to cover with eye-opening driving tours. A glossary and index round out this excellent traveling companion for anyone interested in observing the natural rocky beauty of Colorado firsthand.
Roadside Geology of Colorado.......2006-11-04
This is a very good series of "Roadside Geology" of various states. The writers are experts in their states and highly qualified geologists. The series does not cover all states and there is one large gap - not a roadside geology book on Michigan. This is one of the significant states in the mid- west and has a lot of interest. It is close by Lake Michigan and there are interesting questions about the formation of this lake as well as Lakes Huron and Superior - all surrounding the land mass of Michigan.
Great book--I don't drive anywhere in Colorado without it........2002-12-01
This is a very handy book. It's arranged by road name and by stretch of road--if you find yourself on, say, I-70 westbound from Denver, go to the table of contents and you'll quickly find something like "I-70, Denver to Dillon Reservoir." Go to that section and you'll find a small map, geological diagrams, and probably a photograph. There's also an introductory chapter that gives an overview of Colorado geology and geological history, as well as very clear explanations of geological terms.
Driving on Colorado highways you see some pretty amazing rock formations, and visitors to the state are always asking about them. This book will tell them (and you) anything you might want to know, and explain it clearly. I keep my copy in the car, and consult it often.
Very useful handbook for those interested in landscapes.......1998-12-20
I like to travel throughout Colorado and have found this book to be very useful in understanding the form and geologic history of the landscape I am travelling through. The book is well illustrated and detailed enough to be useful, at least for the person with a non-professional interest in geology. My major regret is that it is not available on CD or tape so that it could be more efficiently used with only one person in the car!

Book Description
In recent years, there have been many books on railway signaling, but never one like this. This volume is the first all-color book on a subject that lends itself to COLOUR particularly well. From a personal archive containing many thousands of signaling views taken by his late father and himself, Robert Hendry has selected almost 200 outstanding photographs not just for their pictorial qualities, but to illustrate how railway signaling has evolved since the dawn of the railways. The author had mastered the block code long before he knew his multiplication tables, and worked his first block instrument before he was 5 years old. It was a short step from photographing signal boxes to collecting data about them, and each view in the book is accompanied by an informative caption that will assist those coming to the subject for the first time, but will also add new perspectives for the signaling devotee.

Book Description
For more than a century, energy and its procurement have been central to the U.S. position as a world power. How can U.S. relations with established producer nations ensure the stability of energy supplies? How can non-OPEC resources best be brought to the international marketplace? And what are the risks to international security of growing global reliance on imported oil?
In Energy and Security: Toward a New Foreign Policy Strategy, Jan H. Kalicki and David L. Goldwyn bring together the topmost foreign policy and energy experts and leaders to examine these issues, as well as how the U.S. can mitigate the risks and dangers of continued energy dependence through a new strategic approach to foreign policy that integrates both U.S. energy and national security interests. Contributors include Abdullah bin Hamad Al-Attiyah, Kevin A. Baumert, Michelle Billig, Loyola de Palacio, Jonathan Elkind, Michelle Michot Foss, Leon Fuerth, Lee H. Hamilton, Evan M. Harrje, John P. Holdren, Paul F. Hueper, Amy Myers Jaffe, J. Bennett Johnston, Donald A. Juckett, Viktor I. Kalyuzhny, Melanie A. Kenderdine, William F. Martin, Charles McPherson, Kenneth B. Medlock III, Ernest J. Customer Reviews:
A well documented discussion.......2007-10-14
This is a wide ranging and well thought out discussion on contemporary issues in US energy security, comnprehensively covering many aspects of hydrocarbon politics. The book puts into perspective that prices at the petrol pump are more than simply politicians in Washington who should be 'doing something' about oil prices, but rather that the problem is a whole raft of interconnected global political issues. This discussion clearly highlights the current heavy reliance that the US has on many, unstable third world nations. This fact in itself is quite worring.
One area where I felt that the book could have been a little more in-depth was around solutions to the energy security issue, and in particular the use and development of alternative energy supplies or other strategies for reducing the reliance upon hydrocarbons. There are short chapters on both alternative energy and on the environmental problems of oil, both of which likely to become much bigger over the next decade or so. As the book rightly points out, however, there is going to be no short term solution and much of the US foreign policy for the next decade or so is going to be driven by protecting its foreign oil supplies.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in current global issues in energy security.
Energy and Security: Toward a New Foreign Policy Strategy (Woodrow Wilson Center Press).......2007-02-21
required reading as background history of oil to understand the future we need to understand the past to the best of our abilities
A Definitive Account of the Washington Consensus on the Energy-Security Nexus.......2007-01-27
Patrick Clawson's statements ring true, Energy and Security provides a definitive account of the Washington consensus on the energy-security nexus. It argues that energy policy of the last half century has produced excessive dependence on unstable and repressive governments, has failed to redress the environmental consequences of energy consumption, and has failed to invest adequately in technology that would reduce strategic vulnerability and environmental degradation.
It sounds convincing--until one asks the question of cost. The last fifty years have also been a period of unprecedented global prosperity, and low-cost energy was no small part of the reason. In that time, energy consumption has exploded, as electricity has been brought to billions, and transporting goods and people across vast distances has become commonplace. Those who would change direction on energy policy should acknowledge that thirty years ago, in response to the oil crisis of the 1970s, the best and brightest made many of the same recommendations repeated here, and the result was a waste of tens of billions of dollars on inappropriate technologies and complicated regulatory schemes. It is disheartening to see such prominent experts so quick to skip over the errors of the past and so little interested in the dollars-and-cents implications of their recommendations.
That said, the twenty-two essays have much useful information and many important insights. The globe is covered in twelve essays grouped in four regions with a commentary section for each: Russia, the Caspian, and European gas; the Persian Gulf, North Africa, and sub-Saharan Africa; China, Japan, and southeast Asia; and North America, South America, and the North Atlantic (i.e., North Sea). A major theme is that energy resources are abundant--few serious experts have much patience for resource pessimism so often trotted out by certain engineers and environmentalists--but that there are serious questions about the framework of government policies for making use of those resources.
Another set of essays paints the global framework, such as the role of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), the International Energy Agency, and commodity exchanges. The essays in the final section look at public policy issues such as climate protection, environmental sustainability, technology development, and strategic reserves. The authors do an excellent job of describing the issues as seen in Washington, including analysis of the debates about what should be government policies. That is a welcome contrast to the shrill tone and extreme positions staked out by many authors addressing these matters.
Sensible and comprehensive.......2005-11-14
It is the fate of any topic that as its importance rises in the public domain, the quality of the debate on it decreases almost proportionally. Energy security has not escaped this rule. As the intuitive grasp on energy security becomes more complicated, the prescriptions to solve it become simpler and sillier. The purpose of this volume is to navigate through the complicated subject of energy security with solemnity and seriousness.
In doing so, it begins, sensibly, from refuting the more obscene and far-fetched ideas out there on how to deal with America's energy security. It then outlines the various features of economy, technology, and geopolitics that make up America's energy security map and proceeds to explain how they can be integrated in a larger foreign and domestic policy framework.
What emerges from this volume is a double sense: the first is that a topic as complex as energy security can be reasonably broken down to its individual components (in fact, it is obvious in the text why it is necessary to do so). The second is that enhancing America's energy security involves serious tradeoffs in domestic and foreign policy-tradeoffs that politicians seem unwilling to accept as necessary much less adopt as policy.
To contrast the hoopla out there on energy security, this tome offers both a good start and a reasonable advancement on the field. Anyone who wants to think about energy security in a sensible, systematic and comprehensive sense has to become acquainted with this book.
Energy is Security.......2005-10-03
Bravo to the editors and writers of this very timely policy treatise discussing the very urgent need for the US to realign its foreign policy to secure our future. A must read.
