Thoroughly, thoroughly worthless.......2005-11-25

There are a lot of infertility books out there. Most of them repeat the same information over and over again. This is one of the more worthless specimens of this latter sort. If you haven't read a single infertility book, then you might find something of value in this book. (But I would get it -- or something similar to it -- from the library if I were you.) If you've already done some reading, then skip this one -- there's nothing new in it.

Covers Basics...Very Reader-Friendly.......2002-05-09

This book was my introduction to getting a diagnosis (and treatment) for infertility. It is a great "quick-reference" book--it covers the basics in a very clear fashion. It's a great place to start learning if you find yourself starting the intense journey of infertility treatment. I highly recommend this book for couples.

Don't Waste Your Money!.......2002-04-19

There are some fantastic books on fertility on the market. This one isn't even remotely close. The Fertility Handbook tries to do it all in 135 pages and sadly, ends up doing very little. This little book attempts to cover everything from emotional concerns to all of the causes and treatments of infertility and causes of & living after miscarriage.

What happens is this: important topics get watered down, and so simplified that they aren't practically useful. Want to learn how to chart your temperature? Hope you're a quick learner, because you get one paragraph to figure it out. Wandering how you should take care of your body while trying to conceive? Don't miss it - it's all in one paragraph.

And yet it's puzzling that there are two pages on selective reduction of multiples, something that very few women will have to face. And if they do, I hope women look at more thorough books than this one to make their decision...

Too Many Little Dots.......2007-08-29

At the risk of stating the obvious, it is a collection of George Bush's speeches, radio addresses, and appearances as president from post 9/11 until publication. It focuses on terrorism, American achievement and mystique, and above all, fear.

These speeches represent a departure from presidents in the past. A classic opposite was FDR who said that "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself." Bush takes the unhealthy approach of reminding us that we should be fearful of terrorists, terrorism, and the ultimate need to be vigilant, and that under his leadership, we will be victorious.

In trying to present the best side of Mr. Bush, the editors have gone out of their way to remove the gaffes, gaffows and winces that have made his fans characterize him as a good ol' boy, and made his detractors wince in embarassment that he his the president.

And then there's the speeches. Just when you expect Bush to tell us that the best way to fight terrorism is to go to an old age home, to put your arms around someone and them that you love them, there are these dots, these little ellipses. Just when you are hoping to read that he wants OB/GYN doctors to be able to spread their love to women around the country, there are even more dots. There are too many little dots. There are usually four of them which means the edit goes to the end of the sentence. This is the equivalent of seeing a movie of salty language with its word substitutes on regular television. "Forget you too!" just doesn't seem to have the power as the original, unedited phrase.

I recommend this for Bush admirers only. Do not expect to find anything profound as you would in Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, FDR's or JFK's speeches. There is nothing memorable here, just a mediocre speaker trying his damndest to make Americans afraid.

I understand that the Dept of Defence has raised the age for joining the US Army to 39. By the time this President "prevails" I expect to see the joining age somewhere around 65. A directionless voyage into the rudderless meanderings of what once was a great country.

If this guy is so into the survival, or, as he would say, the "prevalation" of America, how come you can carry scissors on airplanes again? Is he so sure it's just high-income Republican-voting ladies who HAVE to cut their nails enroute? What's to stop some more gangs from our Saudi ally from taking over an airliner? And how come you can STILL bring containerized freight into just about any American port, unchecked? In spite of what (Republican) Mr. Kean may say about it? How come this prevalator has allowed Alqaeda to enter Iraq? That little stinker, Saddam Hussein (his daddy's ally), had been doing a pretty good job at keeping them out. And how come the Pakistanis STILL have the "Islamic Bomb"? Who do you think that bomb is going to be used on?
I don't know how free we'll be, with George "Patriot Act" Bush Jr. around, but Little George sure has a different idea of how to "prevalate" than anybody I ever met.

Don't waste your money.......2005-11-20

I can't believe I wasted my money on this book. It's exactly what you'd expect. Copy/paste any of his speeches and you can make the same book.

THIS IS A GREAT COLLECTION OF STORIES COVERING JEWISH ATHLETES. FROM MARK SPITZ TO SANDY KOUFAX, EACH PERSON IS COVERED IN NICE DETAIL TELLING A BIT OF THEIR LIFE AND WHAT THEY CONTRIBUTED TO THEIR SPORT. I REALLY FOUND THIS ENTERTAINING AND INTERESTING. A RECOMMENDED READ.

Encyclopedic!.......2000-05-16

Outside the names of Sandy Koufax and Mark Spitz, it's hard to rattle off a list of great Jewish athletes. For me, this encyclopedia of Jewish athletes (complete with photos) offered encouragement in the field of athletics, and I think this can be a very empowering book for aspiring Jewish athletes in any sport. It's fun to flip each page and learn about another exciting career!

Flawed Analysis of the Peace Process.......2005-02-27

Let me begin with a quibble. The book is filled acronyms. Ms. Juhn makes an attempt to identify these with a beginning listing but may acronyms are omitted. The same problem is repeated with the names of the persons involved. These problems result perhaps because the author is too familiar with her subject matter. It makes for opaque reading at times.

The book would also benefit from additional critical analysis or more exposition of the forces at work on people at an individual level. But, this information may not have been abundantly available.

My biggest problem is with the author's cavalier minimization of the social forces at work and the implications of not addressing these in the final peace accords. For example the author says "There are no villains and no heroes in this story. History is the procession of people fighting to preserve a way of life or to change it. This is no less true in El Salvador than it was in the United States during its own civil war."

I suppose the author would not be an admirer of Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address. There is a powerful vector in human history that is propelled by people's being marginalized and humiliated. Individually a person may be made to feel worthless or deficient. When many people experience this emotion together, as a result of the same causes, powerful social forces may be set in motion.

Too what extent is the current gang violence in El Salvador the result of the failure of the peace process to hold accountable those responsible for the death squads? What will be the long term consequences of the continued concentration of wealth in a few hands?

I appreciate the author's efforts but must express my reservations.

A superb behind the scenes analysis.......2001-07-05

The peace process in El Salvador was very difficult to understand for outsiders, even Salvadorans like me. This book succeeds in claryfing not only the actual events, but also the underlying motives and incentives for each of the parties involved.

The book begins with a good historical analysis, which puts into perspective all the decisions taken during the actual peace negotiations. Once the historical motivation is clear, the actual strategies for the negotiation begin to make perfect sense.

All in all, this book really shines at explaining the underlying interests of the parties and the tactics they resorted to in achieving a truly remarkable agreement.

The Inside Story of the Salvadoran Peace Process.......2000-06-04

This book is an excellent study of the behind-the-scenes policy making during the Salvadoran peace process. The author obviously had access to many of the persons involved in the process. It is also lacks the left-wing bias found in much of the U.S. literature on El Salvador. I recommend this book for anyone interested in the Salvadoran Civil War as well as for those who study the topic of negotiated settlements to civil conflicts.

This book saved my life (or, at least, my thesis)..........2007-05-17

For my undergraduate political science thesis, I had found a slew of books on the Internet and politics. But quite frankly, none of them compared in scope and depth to Chadwick's excellent volume; it was only until I found his book that I actually "got" the relationship between the Internet and democratic institutional design. It is at once academically rigorous and easy to understand, comprehensive in research and not overly bogged down in the minutiae. Highly recommended for students, technologists, and policymakers.

Ok...A book about a celebrity living a certain "lifestyle" I was hesistant at first to read this book but now proudly own it. It was inspiring to see a famous person walking the talk. Woody Harrelson has become someone I admire. Recommend this book highly!! Oh though I'm not a raw foodist there is a great section in regards to it.

How to go further.......2006-07-20

This book is so good. It's a very eye opening way to try to live your life. Filled with lots of informative facts about what is in the food that we eat, as well as what is really going on in the world around us. Enjoy and try to take some of these examples to heart and make your life a little better.

Enlightening but certainly not a "guide"........2006-01-30

While enlightening I feel the title of the book can be misleading. The title should have been "Making the Case for Simple Organic Living". Woody gives you countless reasons why simple organic living is a path in life worth taking. The personal anecdotes are very entertaining and eye opening. Unfortunately I was expecting more specific examples of how one begins down the road. Maybe Woody and his team could write a follow up. It would certainly make a great companion book to this one.

Amazing!.......2005-10-11

This book made me queston many of my daily habits and allowed me to see the ways they affect the rest of the world. Go Further reinforced my decision to be a vegan, and made my roommate become a vegetarian! Great ideas, it should be required reading if the US is serious about saving the planet...

Common Knowledge.. You'd Think.......2005-09-18

There are plenty of reasons for socially and environmentally conscious people to feel discouraged these days, but Woody Harrelson wants us to know that we still have the power to change the world for the better.
How To Go Further covers a wide-range of topics such as organic food, alternative energy, yoga, and activism, and features Woody's personal account of self-transformation, along with similar messages from others who were on the tour, such as Steve "Jedi" Clark (the former junk food junkie).
The book also features stirring essays from activists such as John Schaeffer, who is the founder and president of Real Goods, a company devoted to creating alternative energy options, and Howard "Twilly" Cannon, who is a former skipper of Greenpeace's Rainbow Warrior.
Naturally, the book is a model of sustainability it's printed on 100% post-consumer recycled paper using vegetable-based soy pigments, and its coatings are non-chemical based.
How To Go Further is an entertaining and amazing resource both for people new to the eco-movement and for those looking for even more inspiration and reasons to walk on the earth with lighter footprint.
