5 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive View of Midwifery Politics.......2001-01-22

Kitzinger has once again created a powerhouse (this time as an editor and contributor) with The Midwife Challenge. Midwifery practice around the globe is represented and what is "normal" in other countries often puts U.S. practices to shame with its scientification of the birth process. Other developed countries experience the same conflict between natural processes and the proliferation of technology that the U.S. has gone through, and with similar impact on women's health. Most interesting are the articles showing less developed countries experiencing the conflict of wanting to emulate the positive medical advances of the first world while still preserving their indigenous culture.

      Book Description

On August 23, 1990, CNN Executive Producer Robert Wiener landed at Saddam International Airport. Wiener's job was to orchestrate the network's coverage of the Gulf War from the Iraqi capital of Baghdad-a herculean task that involved everything from negotiating with difficult Iraqi officials to gathering news to lifting spirits (including those that come in bottles). All in a day's work for CNN's executive producer in Baghdad. But, in fact, nothing in Wiener's extraordinary career-not even stints in Vietnam or in Romania during the revolution-could prepare him for what was to come...... Live from Baghdad is the fast-paced story of Wiener's adven-tures in Iraq and a suspenseful, no-holds-barred inside look at how the media covered a simmering crisis.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but writer..........2003-10-13

This book is a good and even thrilling description of the first gulf war and how CNN reporters reported from Baghdad. That being said, this writer couldn't be more self-adoring and congratulatory, or obnoxious. At the end of the book, he compares Bush's intelligence to that of his pet cat. Whether you are a Bush-lover or hater, that is a disgraceful, horrible thing to say about the president of our nation and it reflects Wiener's generally high portrayal of himself and low portrayal of others.

2 out of 5 stars Dull from Baghdad.......2002-12-29

I found this book and thought it would be interesting to see what happened to the press during the war. Unfortunately for me all this author talked about was bureaucratic problems and drinking and smoking. I kept reading thinking that once the war started the book would pick up and at page 275 the war started but the book remained dull. I am assuming that the author is a much better TV producer then author or there is no way he would have a job with CNN.

The book was dull, there is no way around it. The author kept focusing on his drinking and the issues with this ministry and that ministry - not the most exciting. I wanted more detail on what it was like in Baghdad leading up to and during the war - - all the author gave us was what it was like for him in his hotel. Overall I would skip the book and watch the movie.

5 out of 5 stars A portrait of cooperation, luck, and determination.......1999-02-28

Live From Baghdad is one of those books that you just cannot put down. Giving the details of the struggle to get the story out before and during the Gulf War, this book is a tremendous personal account of what it takes to succeed in impossible circumstances. Robert Wiener and his crew made extreme personal sacrifices, sometimes in life-threatening circumstances, to get the story out and beat the competition. A great textbook example on how to negotiate what you need through respect and patience, being rewarded with sucess and a place in history. Great anecdotes about life behind the scenes make this a truly enjoyable read.

This book presents the basic ideas of the physics of the main non-gravitational perturbations and the mathematics of the methods required to compute their orbital effects. The authors convey to the reader the relevance of the different problems that need to be solved to achieve a given level of accuracy in the orbit determination and in the recovery of the geophysically significant parameters. The book will enable postgraduate students, research workers and engineers in astronomy, geophysics, applied mathematics and space science to assess for themselves the possible geodetic uses of given space missions, or maybe to propose a new one, or to propose a combined geodetic use for a mission envisaged for other purposes.

In three years the Yeah Yeah Yeahs went from underground sensation to international acclaim. During this time their debut album went gold, sold over 500,000 copies, was nominated for a Grammy and the band headlined the MTV Movie Awards. Through the lens of his camera, lead guitarist Nicholas Zinner documented the groups meteoric rise to fame. Capturing the glamor, debauchery and road-weary tedium, Nick gives readers a never before seen look at rock n roll through the eyes of one of its stars. This collection also includes essays by Jim Jarmusch, director of Coffee and Cigarettes, and comedian David Cross.

From beds to bands there is just enough feeling in each photo to fully press what was going on in that moment of time. This is a remarkable and inspiring book of art. I would recommend this book to anyone who can truly appreciate good "rad" photography.

A Collection of Stories from 50 people involved with Rebuilding Iraq

The book "Iraq: Providing Hope" is a fascinating collection of interesting and at times, even provocative, personal life experiences from 50 people involved with the rebuilding efforts of Iraq. Eric Holmes and Michael Parkhouse put this anthology into a logical and emotional order that helps the reader get a better sense of what is happening in Iraq.

There are no other books like this out there on this present world situation. It offers first hand observations of the mundane and sometimes the frightful events going on. This is not just a military tale of war but a telling of the human experience from both military and civilian point of view.

The stories are woven together like a huge gig saw puzzle. It is the totality of all the pieces of this historic puzzle that gives you a much bigger and more focused perceptive of what this whole effort in Iraq is all about. This multi-viewed story telling is like looking at an aerial photo of a battle field for an understanding of what has happened. The editing smoothly ties it all together so that it moves and flows with energy and keeps the reader's interest throughout the book.

This book needs to be read by people trying to understand the mission and the purpose of what the USA is doing in Iraq. It gives you a view that you are not getting in the media today. Put this book on your reading list!

            5 out of 5 stars A great book.......2005-12-24

What a great book! It has made me cry, and it has made me laugh, but mostly it has made me proud and hopeful. Proud of our people serving in Iraq (male and female, armed forces and civilian). And also proud of the Iraqi people themselves! You don't get this feeling by listening to the media, and the people that talk to us through this book do point that out. This is a must read if you really want to know what is going on in Iraq.

5 out of 5 stars An upbeat testimony to the vision of creating a new Iraq of, by, and for the Iraqi people.......2005-09-05

Iraq: Providing Hope is an unabashedly upbeat anthology of personal stories from fifty people working and putting their lives on the line to free and rebuild Iraq. Including testimonies from both troops and civilians (but not generals, journalists, or politicians), Iraq: Providing Hope focuses on the human experience of soldiers, sailors, Marines, government employees, aid workers, and Iraqis. Iraq: Providing Hope is narrated in a dynamic, free-form style, with some pages and paragraphs devoted to one speaker then jumping to another and another, not a straightforward chapter style in which each narrative is independent of the other. A vital glimpse into what the heroes who risk their lives in Iraq are really thinking, and an upbeat testimony to the vision of creating a new Iraq of, by, and for the Iraqi people.

5 out of 5 stars Hope for Iraq.......2005-02-07

Eric Holmes provides stories from Iraq that the media didn't want the public to hear before the presidential election. He's collected newsworthy events of what American servicemen are doing for the Iraqis, which wasn't possible under Saddam. Rather than how bad it is for Americans in Iraq, it's about the new schools, water flowing, electricity in buildings, and many of the comforts which Americans take for granted. It's also about the Iraqi citizens giving thanks to America for giving them a chance for a new life. Thanks, Eric for delivering the good news.

            5 out of 5 stars Great stories.......2005-02-03

Enjoying reading this book with lots of personal accounts. Much more informative than some political expert going on and on with his opinion. These are just regular folks tellng it like it is. You can tell these are authentic by the style of each writer. These stories are wrapped around a historical account to keep it all in perspective. I wish the book would have come out before the US election. It would have added to the debate.

            Book Description

A sharp and insightful analysis of historic movements against racism in the United States-from the separatism of Marcus Garvey, to the militancy of Malcolm X and the Black Panther Party, to the eloquence of Martin Luther King Jr. and much more-with essential lessons for today's struggles.

In the 40 years since the civil rights movement, many gains have been made-but there is still far to go to win genuine change. Here is a badly needed primer on the history and future of the struggle against racism.

Ahmed Shawki is the editor of the International Socialist Review. A member of the National Writers Union, he is also a contributor to The Struggle for Palestine (Haymarket). He lives in Chicago, Illinois.

5 out of 5 stars More Than a History, More Than a Study.......2006-07-13

Shawki, who is also an editor of the International Socialist Review--the theoretical journal of the International Socialist organization--presents a study of the relationship between the socialist movement in the United States and the Black population. He also does a good deal more here. Given the special history and relationship of African-Americans to the power structure and white-skinned US citizens in general, this is more than a study of that relationship. It is also a history of the African-American struggle for freedom. This history is not the first book to examine this historical relationship. However, it is certainly one of the few that predicates the fundamental elements of that relationship on the economic realities of slavery and the necessity to construct a rationale for the racial nature of African-American bondage and the racist structure that followed emancipation.
This book is a comprehensive look at the history of the struggle for Black liberation in the United States. Shawki's effort is well worth the read, especially for those who are looking for a good introduction to this underexplored part of US history. The fundamental importance of the nature of US capitalist economics to the oppression of African-Americans is never forgotten in this book, but neither is this nature pressed to the point of pedanticism. If racism is the chicken and economics the egg, Shawki makes a compelling argument in these pages that the egg definitely came first. Quite readable, Black Liberation and Socialism adds an important analysis to the bookshelf of Black history. It doesn't merely belong in the study group or the library. It should be part of the slowly growing canon on that topic.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful and too the point.......2006-03-21

Ahmed Shawki's "Black liberation and Socialism" is one of the most powerful and easy to read books that I have read on the subject. His arguments are clear and his examples are powerful. He argues that to end racism ultimately it will take a multiracial working class movement fighting for a society free of poverty, racism, and exploitation i.e. socialism. His historical examples clearly illustrate how this is possible and necessary. It would be difficult to read this book and not feel angered and motivated to action the second you finish.

5 out of 5 stars Could not have come out at a better time.......2006-02-21

Ahmed Shawki's account of the history and politics of the struggle for Black liberation in America is a must read for any anti-racist. We must learn this history as a guide for how to struggle in the present--one thing I enjoy so much about this book is that it gives the reader a sense of the possibilities that existed during periods of social upheaval. Shawki tells us about the abolitionist movement, reconstruction, the civil rights movement, and the black power movement but in so doing he shows us not only what those struggles accomplished--but what they might have accomplished. Read this book!

5 out of 5 stars History as a guide to action.......2006-02-19

This book is ablolutely essential reading for anyone who seeks to destroy racism in today's society. This book highlights the main events of US history regarding race and class, beginning with slavery and the origins of racism, and continuing through the Civil War, reconstruction, the birth and politics of the Civil Rights movement, and Black politics today.

The timing of this book could not be better suited as we have witnessed the deliberate neglect of the Black and poor people of New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the racist criminal justice system and death penalty, and the re-segregation of schools to 1950's levels.

Therefore not only does this book teach us about Black history, but as the title suggests, makes the connection between racism, oppression, and class society. It examines various struggles against racism and points to the multiple places these meet other liberation movements. As we see Condoleeza rice buying $7,000 shoes while ignoring the plight of Katrina survivors, Shawki makes the case that racism is a severe problem, but it is not the only problem. As he points out, Malcom X came to the conclusion later in his life that the majority of society, whatever race or gender, was subject to injustice - injustice that is inherrently tied to class society. Shawki's conclusion is therefore that we need a new Civil Rights movement to fight for Black liberation, as well as a better world free of class antagonisms. And that world is socialism.

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Book.......2006-02-15

I just finished this book and it is amazing. In the wake of the ruling class's racist response to the survivors of hurricane Katrina, this book is an essential tool for not only understanding how capitalism and racism are intimately linked, but provides clear ways to end both.

5 out of 5 stars WEaknessses of the Time confessions of the author.......2006-02-25

This book reflects the weaknesses of the time. The essential problem of those days was to fight the sectarianism and workerism that people who were afraid to identify with the forward push the Black Liberation struggle took in those years, and counterpose it to a false illusions of what a complete working class radicalization would be like.

Today, I would never say Black nationalism is "revolutionary" or necessarily progressive, except in the sense that Lenin states it, insofar as it leads to a struggle against imperialism and oppression. There is nothing intrinsically socialist about the national democratic demands of a national struggle, yet these struggles are always threatened as long as capitalism and imperialism remain.

National struggles as opposed to nationalist struggles are what is important. However, to move to really solve problems, one needs to do with Malcolm X did and what Fidel Castro did, realize that while the national pride of the oppressed peoples is an essential part of bringing the oppressed and working people onto the stage to mak ehistory, also realize that to win real national liberation one has to go beyond nationalism to internationalism and to a class solidarity and an imperialist position.

Consistent natinalism leads to one thing, nationalism. However, the national struggles of oppressed nationalities if successfully fought can lead to dramatic class confrontations and dramatic confrotnations with imperialism.

If this text bends to far to identify with a the nationalism of the oppressed, its essential spirit of the identification of Lennists with the national liberation struggle of the oppressed under any conditions in advance capitalist countries, in colonies and semicolonies, and in workers states themselves remain the cornerstone, not only to correct policy, but to understanding day to day reality.

The author now lives in Miami Florida, is a top Amazon reviewer, an English professor, the leader of the fledgling national Association of Black Traditional String Players, a banjoist, guitarist, awful fiddler, and continues to work to support the Socialist Workers Part, the Militant, and Pathfinder Press.

The peninsula of Baja California is a place little known even within Mexico, a place, until very recently, of isolated fishing villages and single-lane roads. Now great fleets of fishing boats from all over the world, coupled with a gigantic saltworks and other industrial development, threaten the waters off Baja California--a favored habitat of the gray whale, a creature that has received much attention in recent years.

Once endangered throughout much of its range, the gray whale has made a comeback thanks to international efforts to preserve the species. Ecologist Serge Dedina discusses how those efforts can be extended to Baja California, where much of the whale's habitat is threatened. Dedina proposes ways to involve local fishing people in whale conservation, by, for instance, developing a locally owned, whale-watching-based tourist industry of the sort that brings millions of dollars to California and British Columbia, other stops along the gray whale's migratory route. "Conservation," Dedina writes in this engaging study, "is more than a political process. It intersects with the way people live, perceive, and interact with the animals and landscape around them." His book, full of useful lessons, will be of much interest to conservationists working with animals and habitats of all kinds, as well as to anyone concerned about the gray whale's future. --Gregory McNamee

This book, along with Sightings: The Gray Whales' Mysterious Journey
by Linda Hogan & Brenda Peterson, are required reading for anyone planning to do gray whale watching in Mexico. It is based on the reality of how Mexican politics, not conservationism, determined the perservation of these wonderful animals in Mexico. Most people are not aware that Mexico is the ONLY country in North America that has outlawed gray whale harvesting.

I have been reading everything I can find about the gray whale since I am visiting them in San Ignacio, Baja, Mexico in early February. I found this book to be the most informative for someone who is truly interested in how gray whale conservation evolved especially from the standpoint of how politics influences conservation efforts. Fortunately for the gray whale, the Mexican government had enough proponents to stop the Mitsubishi salt mining from expanding. And Mexico is the ONLY COUNTRY which has outlawed gray whale harvesting. If you are visting the gray whales in Baja, this is a definite must read!

I just returned from touring Baja and experiencing the magnificent gray whale. Serge Dedina spent a significant amount of time researching the content; he succinctly conveys the history of politics and conservation in Baja California in this book. After visiting the same places he lived, and experiencing the people, environment and Gray Whale, I can attest to the fact that Dedina's work is dead-on accurate. Reading this will save you months of research. And, if you are fortunate enough to travel to Baja, I can guarantee you will come away wanting more, and wishing you had done your homework.

(From Planeta Journal) - For the past several years, one of Mexico's most pressing environmental controversies was whether or not the Mexican government and the Mitsubishi Corporation should develop a new salt mining operation within the Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve, one of the world's four breeding areas for gray whales. A candid text, Saving the Gray Whale provides an engaging capsule history of whale conservation in Mexico and a timely review of environmental politics.

In fact, the timing could not be more opportune for this book. Within a month of publication, the plans for the salt operation were cancelled. For readers who are only now learning about this issue, this book is an excellent resource.

Saving the Gray Whale is a must-read book for whale watchers and readers interested in Mexican environmental issues. The candid tone stems from the author's travels and research in Baja, not to mention dizzying trips to Mexico City, where the labyrinths of political power stray far from efficiency. The author combines analysis from historical reports, planning meetings and from encounters on the road or from a kayak paddled across San Ignacio Lagoon.

This book is a treasury of little-known facts ("Gray whales are not gray") and a straightforward review of environmental politics in Mexico -- at least as far as the government is concerned. The list of players is a must-read for anyone interested in environmental issues! Unfortunately, it does not have the same depth when it reviews how the conservation groups ("Non-Governmental Organizations") operate. Is the "Grupo de los 100" really Mexico's "most influential" environmental group? Likewise, what do The Nature Conservancy and World Wildlife Fund do in Mexico? Reports are kept hush and the author doesn't seem to question the lack of transparency.

This book combines a captivating portrait of the whales and the people of southern Baja with a well-documented political analysis of the challenges involved in conservation. Plus, it's a great read.
