Three British diplomats and spies, Donald Maclean, Kim Philby, and Guy Burgess, did everything in their power to see to it that the Soviet Union prevailed in post-WWII clashes with the United States.
Customer Reviews:
A flawed but valuable book.......2005-07-29
This is a valuable book and essential reading for anyone interested in the subject. Newton has very obvious biases - his mean-spirited portrayal of Philby, for example - but he conducted many interviews with the remaining principals, did much research in the US files, came up with some interesting material on the crucial role of Maclean, and takes a thought-provoking look at the murky circumstances of Burgess and Maclean's defection. Newton is inclined to hyperbole and drama and goes off on some odd tangents, but his views are a useful corrective to the hyper-romantic view of the recent BBC television series, "Cambridge Spies." Worth checking out.
Caveat Lector: Let the Reader Beware!.......2005-03-04
Verne Newton's "Cambridge Spies: The Untold Story of Maclean, Philby and Burgess in America" makes for interesting, albeit frustrating reading. An otherwise engrossing account is vitiated by the author's evident bias against the antagonists of the title. For example, Kim Philby cannot enter the narrative without a nasty adjective and a snide comment with which Mr. Newton apparently hopes to convince his seemingly obtuse readers of the man's dastardly guilt. Always accepting the reports of Philby's detractors (e.g., Michael Straight; John Le Carre) as gospel and deploring the accounts of those (e.g., Phillip Knightley; Graham Greene) who ever had anything good to say about the man, the author causes the reader to wonder about the objectivity of the study. The very subtitle of the chapter on Philby, "The Drug of Deceit," seems designed to preclude any counter-arguments. Guy Burgess and Donald Maclean come off slightly better, their chapter subtitles being "The Pathos of Treachery" and the "Politics of Self-Loathing" respectively.
The author's analysis in respect to Philby is especially problematic. For example, he follows the information that by 1943 Philby had become head of SIS's Iberian section--Spain, Portugal, and Gibraltar--with a lengthy discourse upon the events surrounding the tragic plane crash of the Polish General Sikorski [witnessed, we are told gratuitously, by "the British actor Major Anthony Quayle"]. Mr. Newton then speculates: "If Philby had a hand in arranging Sikorski's death, it would have been by far his greatest wartime coup" [p. 57]. Checking the nearest footnote, we discover that the information derives from a secondary source: author Le Carre's "suggestion" that "Philby could possibly be implicated." [p. 373] Possibility seems to constitute wishful thinking rather than solid historical evidence.
The most annoying aspect of the book, however, is the author's propensity for asking really important questions and then not answering them. For instance, he wonders "why would the Soviets ever rely on someone so erratic, unpredictable and outrageous" as Guy Burgess? (Mr. Newton neglects to mention specifically by number the 4404 documents that Burgess supplied the Soviet Union, reducing them to "some valuable information." [p. 266] He passes over an even more vital question about the case: Why, if Guy Burgess was so out of control, did the Foreign Office send him to Washington, arguably its most important posting, instead of to some minor embassy where he could do a minimum of harm? The author's suggestion [p. 269], "[t]here must have been something about Burgess that caused otherwise sane people to take leave of their senses," hardly seems a satisfactory answer.

The book was very academic. It did not tell history as I. Garland Penn saw it. Eventhough I found the book to be very informative and important African American history book I wish the authours had written some more things about Penn's personal life, his family and descendants.

Book Description
COMBINATORIAL CHEMISTRY AND MOLECULAR DIVERSITY IN DRUG DISCOVERY
Edited by Eric M. Gordon and James F. Kerwin, Jr.
Increasing pressure to identify, optimize, develop, and commercialize novel drugs more rapidly and more cost-effectively has led to an urgent demand for technologies that can reduce the time to market for new products. Molecular diversity, of both natural and synthetic materials, provides a valuable source of compounds for identifying and optimizing new drug leads. Through the rapidly evolving technology of combinatorial chemistry, it is now possible to produce libraries of small molecules to screen for novel bioactivities. This powerful new technology has begun to help pharmaceutical companies find new drug candidates quickly, save significant dollars in preclinical development costs, and ultimately change their fundamental approach to drug discovery.
Comprising the work of the leading authorities in the area of molecular diversity and combinatorial chemistry, Combinatorial Chemistry and Molecular Diversity in Drug Discovery highlights the critical concepts and issues involved in implementing combinatorial chemistry to create chemical libraries. The authors, industrial and academic experts in the field, apply combinatorial technologies to drug discovery and development and place co-evolving technologies and practices in a global framework.
Included among the many topics:
* Historical background.
* Library strategy and design.
* Solid-phase synthesis.
* Small molecular libraries.
* Automation, analytical, and computational methodology.
* Biological diversity.
* Strategies for screening combinatorial libraries.
* Combinatorial drug screening and development.
* Combinatorial chemistry information management.
Combinatorial Chemistry and Molecular Diversity in Drug Discovery is one of the first comprehensive books to cover this explosive area. It is must reading for medicinal chemists, pharmacologists, molecular biologists, biochemists, enzymologists, and drug discovery research managers in industry, academia, and government.

Book Description
This collection of testimonies by people who've found new life in the Catholic Church is one of the most potent weapons for the Faith ever crafted! These authors don't just tell their stories they also give you an insider's view of the fatal weaknesses in the creeds and belief systems that beckon unwary Catholics every day: Fundamentalism, New Age paganism, Mormonism, materialistic hedonism, and many others.
You'll discover why these converts forsook beliefs cherished by their families and friends in order to enter the Catholic Church. Their reasons are so compelling that Catholics can use them to draw their own non-Catholic friends and relatives to the Faith.
These converts will also convince wavering Catholics to stay Catholic, and they'll bolster the faith of Catholics when anti-Catholic arguments start to make them doubt. Readers will come away with new gratitude to God for the Catholic Faith, and with a strong new tool they can use to stand proudly for that Faith.
Customer Reviews:
wonderful.......2007-04-11
This book was as good as the first. I think it gives a good understanding as to why someone would convert. As a Catholic myself it has made my faith stronger. I bought the book to then pass on to someone who is considering becoming Catholic. I would not however try to force my beliefs on someone but if someone is interested to understand more it is a great book to read.
Great for a shot in the arm.......2007-03-31
Conversion stories are always a fun read, when one is reading the stories of those who convert to their own faith.
Of course, when the conversion is one away from one's own tradition, that is another thing entirely.
However, fair is fair, and evangelicals have been publishing and telling conversion stories about how people were "saved" from the Catholic Church since the beginning of their movement some 400 years ago. It is remarkable therefore that some would criticize these humble and powerful stories of people who "swam the Tiber" in the other direction as "triumphalist" (whatever that word means) or inappropriate. Yet that is exactly what many evangelicals have done regarding the renaissance in Catholic apologetics that has occurred over the last 20 years.
However, in my opinion, this renaissance is neither "triumphalist" in a negative sense, nor inappropriate. For, in theology, the only way to get at the truth is to use the time honored tool of philosophical reasoning when discussing Divine Revelation. That means making arguments from Sacred Scripture. Arguments invite counterarguments. Reformationists reject the authority of the Church to settle arguments when they get out of hand, or threaten unity. Therefore, we will continue to argue with each other, even while we often work side by side in the trenches fighting things like abortion.
This book clearly shows that ideas have consequences, especially when those ideas are religious ones. Every person whose story is in this book is someone who had the courage to not only challenge received "dogma" but also live their life in a way in conformity with their ideas, regardless of the consequences.
Luckily, these brave individuals are not building their houses on the sand of their own understanding, but rather on the rock of Jesus Christ and the teachings of His Church.
This book and its companion volumes are a great tool when one needs the support they provide. They are also useful for explaining to reasonable non-Catholics why people would find it necessary to call the Catholic Church their spiritual home.
I struggled with whether to give this book series 4 or 5 stars. As collections of conversion stories go, these are excellent. However, conversion stories are monologues, not dialogues, and are therefore less interesting to me than a good discussion of various theological issues. I feel good editing and inclusion of other ideas (perhaps a commentary?) could have addressed this weakness to some degree. However, fair is fair, and most other faith traditions (especially Fundamentalist Protestantism) don't extend the same intellectual courtesy when discussing the conversion stories of those who choose to leave the Catholic Church.
At the very least, these books prove that the Catholic faith is compelling, and reasonable. I, of course, believe it to be true. However, until He comes again, I fear that debate will continue. When we are Christian it will be a good discussion. When we fail, it will be shouting match. Such is the Christian experience post the reformation.
Thorough, well-researched, well-written essays.......2006-08-12
I have read both the first and second book of Surprised By Truth. Both were excellent. Anyone reading them objectively, with an open mind and heart, will learn a lot about the Christian faith in general and Catholicism specifically. I could say a lot about these essays; they are so well-written. What is most important is that they are written from the point of view of love and truth-seeking. I recommend Surprised By Truth.
Wonderful Sequel! Great Testimonies! Highly Inspiring!.......2006-06-24
This sequel to the initial book is extremely good! We now have 15 more testimonies from Protestants and Mormons among other faiths on their personal journeys to the Catholic Faith. The stories are heartfelt and candid and the authors even have their contact information at the end so that you can ask follow-up questions if you ever feel like doing so. Great for anyone who is interested in conversion stories and who is looking for encouragement in their own journeys to the faith. Highly recommended.
Great but most of it is already on the web.......2004-02-07
If a Catholic is trying to become stronger in his faith, he will enjoy this book. It is also useful for Protestants who want to learn why so many are leaving their ranks after studying history and reading the Bible! This story also contains a former Wiccan, abortion supporter, and Jew. The only drawback is most of these stories can be found online for free at websites like the Coming Home Network. Nonetheless, I highly recommend this work.

Book Description
The struggle between Germany and the Allies along the Western Front is for many the most familiar element of the First World War. Nevertheless, many less well-known theatres of conflict, key to the overall progress and conduct of the war, hold as much relevance to both the traveler and the armchair enthusiast. Deploying extant and contemporary photographs and maps to examine the terrain over which these campaigns were fought, Martin Marix Evans sheds light on the fighting methods of the protagonists in less familiar settings, whether in the Italian Alps or in the cloying heat of the Greek coast. In the first weeks of fighting, stubborn Belgian resistance resulted in a desperate battle to stabilize the front and compelled the German advance to be diverted against the British at Ypres. French determination to win back Alsace-Lorraine plunged the Vosges region into fluid conflict for over a year from August 1914 before both sides realized the impossibility of a decisive success in this area. The three-year struggle between Italy and Austria across the alpine passes was to draw German, British and French forces into the region. Anglo-French assistance to the Serbs through Salonika produced a standoff between the Allies and the Central Powers which was only to be resolved in the last months of the war. Martin Marix Evans succeeds in bringing to life these hitherto neglected theatres of operations and places them in the context of the war as a whole.

Customer Reviews:
A quick guide to the Presidents.......2007-04-24
This is a great introduction to American history, excellent for mid graders beginning social studies or just anybody interested in trivia on all the presidents up to George W. Bush's early years. I loved it and used it to get to know some of the presidents that I am not too familiar with like James Monroe, Martin Van Buren, John Tyler, and many of the other lesser presidents. It also goes into some detail into the great ones like George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Woodrow Wilson, John F. Kennedy, and so forth. It also talks about the flaws and some of the things that the men wanted to accomplish and what they didn't. There is also a list of 10 best and 10 worst presidents, and the arguments for them are pretty convincing. If there is a fault to the book it is that I really wanted more info on some of them, and all I got was the very basics. Still, great for what it is, a general once over of the most important men in the world.
A Great Broad Primer of the U.S. Presidents.......2006-07-26
I really like this book because it gives one a great overview of each president. The author doesn't hold back or gloss over any of the presidents. If he thinks one did well, he says so and why. The converse is true for the bad ones.
Each president is given a short pre-history to their presidenthood, a short overview of their actions (and mis-actions) in office and what happened to them when they left.
The edition I own goes up to Preisdent George W. Bush's first term.
I highly recommend it with you need to know the basics of a president to get you started on larger research.
Fun and Informative.......2005-09-21
This is a fun reference source for information about our Presidents. It is a valuable teaching tool and is loaded with "good stuff" and gossip to help put a human face on these men.
Great Job.......2004-04-12
Thank you BooksandPrint. The book got to me on one day before the first day for delivery. I found some minor flaws in the book including a rip on the bottom of the page on the section on Richard Nixon and a misprint on one of the elections in the back where one of the canidate got credit for more electoral votes then he was entitled. I disagree with some of the ranking of the presidents including Bill Clinton. I was amazed that Clinton was not ranke one of the worst ten presidents.
A great introduction.......2003-03-03
Do you want to know what makes a Great President? Do you want to know the names and details of some of the 43 that you've never heard of? Do you want to know the people behind the historical facts?
This book is a great introduction to US presidents for the lay reader. I bought it because I felt underinformed about American history, and couldn't name even half of our presidents. The book certainly helped increase my breadth of knowledge on the subject. It also provided enough tongue in cheek humor to make the history interesting.
After the fact I felt good enough about the book to give it away as a gift.

Book Description
CONTESTED LANDSCAPE is a collection of essays that frame the wide-ranging passions and details of the political debate over wilderness issues in Utah and the West. Utah contains more Bureau of Land Management acreage than any other state in the United States with the exception of Nevada and Alaska. To some this acreage is more than enough, to others too little, hence the debate. The national debate about this western issue has continued virtually unabated for over twenty years, involving local, state, tribal, and national politics and revealing a diverse national opinion on the value of wilderness. Contested Landscape addresses this heated debate in objective terms, avoiding pejorative labels while exploring the positions of both pro-wilderness and multiple-use advocates. CONTESTED LANDSCAPE clarifies relevant laws, policies, court cases, and political activity. This book provides useful background, examining the evolution of the wilderness concept, the U.S. Constitution and wilderness designation, and the BLM wilderness inventory. It also addresses "hotbutton" political issues: mining and other extractive uses of wilderness, state trust lands, grazing, roadless areas, archaeological resources, and the "cost" of solitude. In their conclusion the editors offer workable solutions including a community contextual approach to negotiation. The broad range of perspectives and issues assembled in CONTESTED LANDSCAPE, although framed by the Utah wilderness debate, is far-reaching enough to allow each reader to draw his or her own conclusions about wilderness issues in the New West. As the editors conclude, this "is not about right or wrong; it's about needs and values. When we begin to consider all of these needs and values, then we will find a solution."
Customer Reviews:
Going Nowhere and Answering Nothing in Utah.......2003-02-17
Before I talk about this book, I think everyone here should understand that the collective essays in Contested Landscape were written as part of a college class at the University of Utah by graduate and undergraduate students over a two quarter period in 1997. This book showcases a wonderful opportunity for students and for creating a piece of work which the wilderness and multiple use movement could utilize.
However, Contested Landscape does not quite capture the passion behind the debate of wilderness in the west, and it does not exactly examine wilderness issues from all ventures: there are three sides to the issue: those that are `pro' wilderness, those that are against wilderness, and the writers. (which seek a unified, balanced, and compromised approach) Within the wilderness movement in Washington state, there are so many multi-factions of each side that the result is that the movement and the debate is not a polarized black and white, but a collision of two shades of grey in the quest to tackle public lands issues. Subsequent research by others associated with the movement will show that this is true for many states dealing with public lands issues. In Contested Landscape however, the sides are painted to be such unified opposites, it hardly seems real.
Utah is the only other state in the West (besides Hawaii) that has less then 1.5 million acres of wilderness in the state. (it has only 750,000) It is because of the horrendous politics (both national and local) that the state has such a low acreage of wilderness compared with Utah's `western' neighbors: but this notion is not explored anywhere in the book. Contested Landscape paints a picture that the wilderness the state has is a reflection of the politics, of which every western state has. While there is growing difference between rural and urban cultures in western states, the politics of each western state are so uniquely different, Contested Landscape is not an appropriate reference to regional or local wilderness politics by any means: I could not hold Contested Landscape as a means of evidence in an argument if I wished to espouse on the issues of low lying old growth in roadless areas in Washington State.
The book also lacks a sense of place. Angry ranchers and wilderness advocates with no backdrop to put them against. Despite the beautiful picture on the cover, there is nothing else to describe in words or pictures the beauty and landscape of Utah. Thus, you would have no idea what these people are fighting over if you were to pick up the book knowing nothing about Utah. No mention of the shrub-steppe ecosystem, the Great Salt lake, The Rockies, or anything else distinctive. This is a critical failure of the book: to not showcase passion with a sense of place.
Also, because the majority of the federal land is BLM land, there is constant discussion about this agency and anything else regarding wilderness. This can make the book read like a BLM ranger's handbook, with so much technical and bureaucratic lingo regarding range management and what not, it can become dizzying (hat's off to the kid's that had to work on this stuff)
I must give credit to the students, though, they initiated and carried out a very difficult project, and the writing, while too rigid to be engaging and empowering, was of course required of them to I suppose, "make the grade." Out of this I hope some good experience came to each of them. As I understand it, the book did not go over well in Utah, as "both sides" (as the author's constantly refer to a loose confederation of people) opposed the compromise solutions advocated in the book. If you would like a truly interesting read with a good dose of wilderness politics, read Return of the Wild by Ted Kerasote.
