One of the most cogent and respected strategic theorists in today's military sounds the alarm: We have no viable doctrine for tomorrow's war.

3 out of 5 stars The author rates 5 stars as an antagonist, the book 3 stars........2001-02-12

"The Principles of War For the Information Age" is an ambitious book seeking to not only redefine but replace the traditional MOOSEMUSS (maneuver, objective, offensive, surprise, economy of force, mass, unity of command, simplicity, and security) principles of war. The book consists mainly of the author's thoughts with only a few weak historical examples given as evidence. The book does not provide a compelling case for change, but serves well as a thought-provoking essay. One finds enough material to keep the readers' interest to complete the book with an occasional nugget of gold. One has to admire the author's courage in writing the book as an active duty officer. The Army should assign the author to a prestigious military research center or college.

    4 out of 5 stars Unique perspective.......2001-01-20

What really impresed me about this book was Leonhard's application of physics terms to modern warfare. Using quantities like "velocity", "momentum" and "mass", he distills modern warfare to its most basic components, and by so doing, offers the foundation for the proper application of maneuver doctrine in 21st century arms.

While perhaps not as engaging as "The Art of Maneuver", "The Principles of War for the Information Age" is another significant contribution to military theory by an outstanding author.

    2 out of 5 stars A bit of a disappointment.......2000-12-20

There are some tidbits of wisdom in the soup offered up by Leonhard. Following his excellent The Art of Maneuver, and Fighting by Minutes, Principles begins as a much needed critique of the classical principles of war. He shows with great gusto that many are mutually contradicting, like mass, security, and maneuver. You can't hide a large force, or make it move very quickly. Nor can you hide a moving force.

I suppose Leonhard hoped that his new principles of war would take off, and generate whole new doctrines and policy for the "information age." His Three Laws of War are an excellent step forward in anthropology and psychology, but whether they will be much use on the battlefield or policy centers is unclear.

Rather than scrap aging principles for a new way of thinking, as I had hoped, Leonhard appends several new "principles" to his three laws. Having read his other books with much enjoyment, I was shocked to see him actually state that the quintissential fog of war would be lifted in the information age, especially after the derision he heaped on just that idea in The Art of Maneuver.

Frankly, I would recommend this book to anyone who blindly subscribes to the touted "Principles of War," if only to see more innovative thinking. The latter part of the book, on the "new" principles of war remain to be demonstrated in reality.

    5 out of 5 stars A thought-provoking discussion of modern warfare principles........2000-09-05

What are the new ethical and military principles for fighting a war using today's modern machinery and equipment? Principles of War for the Information Age provides a thought-provoking discussion of modern warfare and the new principles of such battle, discussing implications of precision warfare, objectives in war, and civilian and military concerns alike.

5 out of 5 stars Army New thinking is better than old false thinking.......2000-08-07

LTC Leonhard is a brilliant tactician who examines the past, the present and the future simultaneously--a coup d-oeil---creating an understanding of everything far better than cowardly copying the Germans or someone else. He takes what he knows to be true as a current U.S. Army battlefield Commander and applies this experience to fresh thinking far better than any arm-chair wannabe who praises another service that has not done its homework and thought very deep about the issues, but is deep in platitudes. The 9 Principles of war (MOOSE MUSS) as we remember them are actually derived from Clausewitz if another reviewer had his wits about him. They are a guide to thinking no more divinely inspired as the writings of Big Al or the wannabe tacticians of America's sea-based posturers.

LTC Leonhard is one of America's and the Army's best and brightest thinker-warriors who refuses to succomb to the platitudes of the past or the present Germanophiles, who omit in their discussions that maneuverism died in the fortress cities of Tobruk, Stalingrad, Bastogne when it met the defense-in-depth fueled by a nation at total war. We need new thinking not new wine in old wine bottles!

    Good work, Sir!

              5 out of 5 stars Great book..........2007-02-08

I'm an avid reader of anything related to scuba diving and freediving. This book filled my expectations. However, I also read The Last Attempt by Carlos serra and found it even more appealing and gripping than this one. I highly recommend both of them but The Last Attempt was a really nice surprise.

It's about the story of a female freediving champion who died during her last attempt to set a new world record held by her husband, a legend in the sport, but after her death, and even though everyting pointed towards him, and despite heavy scrutiny by the media, no one could establish what actually happened. I was astonished when i read it. Incredible story, so between The Last Attempt and Fatal Depth, i found myself delighted with a lot of good reading.

3 out of 5 stars A magazine article on steroids .......2006-05-07

Fatal Depth offers a neutral report of several accidents, starting with the collision that sunk the Andrea Doria and then moving on to recount mishaps involving deep water scuba diving by recreational divers who want to explore the wreck and bring back artifacts. Some would call deep water diving of this type "extreme" diving (230 feet deep), though aficionados call it technical diving. The reporting of the mishaps themselves is brief since they often occurred while the diver was out of sight of others, but this is supplemented by substantial background information about the diver.

Haberstroh, by trade a reporter and not a diver, has written a book that looks at some of the non-technical issues, such as the boat captain's responsibility to assure the competence of divers who have the requisite certifications or who are accompanied by a reputable instructor. Typical of a reporter writing a story, he presents the issues but does not provide his own editorial opinion.

The failure to report the outcome of the lawsuit that is discussed in the book is annoying, but an online search revealed that the plaintiff lost the case (at least at the trial level) by summary judgment. Whether the case has been appealed is not readily ascertainable by an online search.

While a quick read, it does not compare favorably with Shadow Divers or The Last Dive, both of which are gripping. For someone interested in this genre, it offers enough new information to make it worth reading, and in that case, Fatal Depth would be a good book to borrow from a local library.

5 out of 5 stars Great reference book for technical wreck divers.......2005-08-19

Great book. Lots of accident information as well as the diving history of the wreck. A must have for your reference library. Learn from the mistakes of others.

              5 out of 5 stars A Good Read.......2005-03-04

I enjoyed reading this book...for someone that does not dive it certainly is an eye-opener as to how many ways you can get in trouble quick at extreme depths.

2 out of 5 stars Accurate but disappointing.......2005-03-02

I had just finished Shadow Divers when I jumped into Fatal Depth. That's a shame because Shadow Divers so overwhelms FD that a completely unbiased review may not have been possible.

Haberstroh knits together the string of fatal dive incidents using the state of mind of dive boat captain Dan Crowell as the unifying thread. This attempt, though, turns up so little that the incidents really have to stand alone. As such, they seem like little more than incident investigations with perhaps a bit of background color for each of the victims. The author seems to have had no particular agenda and draws no conclusions. Even the status of a lawsuit described in the book's closing chapters is left unresolved.

If you want a STORY, ready Shadow Divers. If you want research material on deep diving fatalities or just cannot get enough of the genre then by all means pick up Fatal Depth.

                Book Description

As urban planning moves from a centralized, top-down approach to a decentralized, bottom-up perspective, our conception of urban systems is changing. In Cities and Complexity, Michael Batty offers a comprehensive view of urban dynamics in the context of complexity theory, presenting models that demonstrate how complexity theory can embrace a myriad of processes and elements that combine into organic wholes. He argues that bottom-up processes -- in which the outcomes are always uncertain -- can combine with new forms of geometry associated with fractal patterns and chaotic dynamics to provide theories that are applicable to highly complex systems such as cities.

Batty begins with models based on cellular automata (CA), simulating urban dynamics through the local actions of automata. He then introduces agent-based models (ABM), in which agents are mobile and move between locations. These models relate to many scales, from the scale of the street to patterns and structure at the scale of the urban region. Finally, Batty develops applications of all these models to specific urban situations, discussing concepts of criticality, threshold, surprise, novelty, and phase transition in the context of spatial developments. Every theory and model presented in the book is developed through examples that range from the simplified and hypothetical to the actual. Deploying extensive visual, mathematical, and textual material, Cities and Complexity will be read both by urban researchers and by complexity theorists with an interest in new kinds of computational models.

                5 out of 5 stars Tremendous resource.......2006-06-23

This book is an immense collection of research on the application of complex systems to urban spatial analysis. While this book is not extensive and is probably not meant as a textbook on complex systems in its entirety, I highly recommend it for those interested in urban spatial analysis. The applications of the techniques go beyond geography and are useful in sociology, economics, or urban planning. A caveat that I should add is that the book is quite dense with methods and formulas and is probably not best to approach this book without some knowledge of advanced statistics. However, the theoretical overviews provided more than allow for those without this background to get something out of it. In short, if you are a graduate student, professor, or researcher I'd recommend this book for an insightful and important take on the nature of cities and urban analysis.

5 out of 5 stars Love this book! .......2007-08-08

This book is EASILY the best hiking book for Georgia I've ever seen. In the past I've always mapped directions online before a hike so as not to get lost. I've finally found an author I trust to get things right. The directions in this book are always correct and easy to follow. Every hike is detailed to perfection, informative, and fun to read. On my first overnight backpacking trip years ago, I tore out the one page hike description from another hiking book and carried it with me. My friend and I had to guess where we were the entire trip as the hike description was so vague. There is nothing vague about this book!! The author takes you almost step by step through each hike and there is never a question as to where you are. This is PRICELESS for someone going on a solo hike - especially a woman hiking alone. I always get nervous and really appreciate knowing I'm not lost! Such a great book...

                    Book Description

The Chattooga River has long been recognized as the crown jewel of southeastern rivers. Because of its inclusion under the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act, this pristine stream and watershed have been established as a legacy for ourselves and for future generations. If you have hiked, camped, or floated on the river, you already understand its special nature. If you haven't, there is much to experience.

Naturalist and author Butch Clay has spent most of his adult life on or near this unique resource. In this book he details the geology, natural and human history, and the flora and fauna found in the river corridor. Clay reveals significant places, rare and endangered species, and provides a wealth of useful information about hiking, camping and paddling the Chattooga.

                    Book Description

Before the novel and the film Deliverance appeared in the early 1970s, any outsiders one met along the Chattooga River were likely serious canoeists or anglers. In later years, untold numbers and kinds of people have felt the draw of the river's torrents, which pour down the Appalachians along the Georgia-South Carolina border. Because of Deliverance the Chattooga looms enigmatically in our shared imagination, as iconic as Twain's Mississippi—-or maybe Conrad's Congo.

This is John Lane's search for the real Chattooga—-for the truths that reside somewhere in the river's rapids, along its shores, or in its travelers' hearts. Lane balances the dark, indifferent mythical river of Deliverance against the Chattooga known to locals and to the outdoors enthusiasts who first mastered its treacherous vortices and hydraulics. Starting at its headwaters, Lane leads us down the river and through its complex history to its current status as a National Wild and Scenic River. Along the way he stops for talks with conservation activists, seventh-generation residents, locals who played parts in the movie, day visitors, and others. Lane weaves into each encounter an abundance of details drawn from his perceptive readings and viewings of Deliverance and his wide-ranging knowledge of the Chattooga watershed. At the end of his run, Lane leaves us still fully possessed by the Chattooga's mystery, yet better informed about its place in his world and ours.

                    4 out of 5 stars Chatooga, a flowing book.......2004-06-27

Chatooga is a flowing book - pun intended. John Lane
talks about the effect of the book Deliverance
and the movie on the people living around the Chatooga
in North Georgia. He talks to the people,
he hikes on the banks of the river and he kayaks the river.
This is a personal book, as much about Lane as
about the river. A good read!

5 out of 5 stars Traveling the River with John Lane.......2004-05-13

Once again, John Lane has succeeded in writing a book that really connects with the regular fan of the wilderness with a desire to read. As a person that grew up in the area of the Chattooga, and have rafted the river myself, John's insights and stories were wonderfully written and a treat to have read. John Lane is the writer of my people.

                    5 out of 5 stars John Lane...A Man's Man.......2004-05-08

John Lane has done it again... John never siezes to amaze me with his timeless writings. John Lane paints the most vivid pictures with his words. In all my years I have never read such brilliant literature. This book really hit home with me. All my life I've traveled on rivers, namely the Chattooga. The rhythmic beauty of its current is captured in John Lane's words. I am haunted by waters.
