Millions yearly embark on vacation travel for relaxation and good times. But some pack a little bag of anxiety to take along with the bathing suit and sunglasses, and many stay at home out of fear. For the worry warts among us, Savage covers visas and traveler's checks, diarrhea, jet lag and safe sex, what to wear on the plane, and what to do during a hijacking (no mention, however, of what to wear during a hijacking). Everything your parents might wish for you, everything you wish your children would do and a lot of very useful, practical information.
Book Description
a comprehensive guide to planning and completing safe trips.
Customer Reviews:
...must reading for every American before leaving the U.S........2004-11-30
This important book could, and should, change what every American does prior, during, and upon returning to the U.S from abroad. It makes the critical point that we are facing a very different world today, and proper preparation can avert catastrophe.
With compelling evidence and argument, Peter Savage explains why the businessperson, tourist, and student alike would do well to strongly consider and ingrain a specific personal security discipline. It powerfully demonstrates that security-like any discipline-is not a skill that can be separated from substance and content. Many of the lessons come straight from what professional intelligence officers practice as routine..."you should not consider the telephones in your hotel as `secure' for discussions of sensitive business or personal matters." P. 159 ..."before walking into the street from your hotel or office, look around at people loitering in the street-both men and women. Observe their facial and clothing details, so you would recognize them if you saw them again later in the day." P. 169..."avoid all pattern and routine." P. 179.
The book is also packed with handy checklists, the latest on health and insurance considerations, and referrals. I applaud Mr. Savage and his work; this book was long overdue and should be continually updated. I can think of no other book of recent years more important for the development of a personal security regimen than this one.
Out of Date.......2002-12-12
This book was a disappointment. The copy I received has 1993 and 1998 copyrights, so despite the tag "Revised Edition" on the front, it is not a recent revision. That makes all the difference in the world when you are writing about the topic of travel safety. Because this book was revised several years prior to Sept. 11, 2001, a great deal of the information is out of date and useless. I found myself not trusting anything in the book. I was disappointed in The Safe Travel Book not only because of its outdated information, but also because it seems aimed at executives and diplomats rather than the average traveler. In addition, the presentation is dry. I found myself skimming the pages rather than reading them.
My recommendation to the author would be another revision, which I hope is in the works. And a few personal stories would liven up the material.
really good and useful.......1998-06-21
This is a must-read for people traveling overseas, particularly those going to politically unstable countries or those working for large, multi-national countries. Mr. Savage covers all the basics of safe travel and gives many helpful suggestions. I have bought several copies for friends going on their first international trip.

Book Description
The papers in this volume arose out of the workshop Membrane Transport and Renal Physiology, which was conducted as part of the IMA 1998-1999 program year, Mathematics in Biology. The workshop brought together physiologists, biophysicists, and applied mathematicians who share a common interest in solute and water transport in biological systems, especially in the integrated function of the kidney. Solute and water transport through cells involves fluxes across two cell membranes, usually via specialized proteins that are integral membrane components. By means of mathematical representations, transport fluxes can be related to transmembrane solute concentrations and electrochemical driving forces. At the next level of functional integration, these representations can serve as key components for models of renal transcellular transport. Ultimately, simulations can be developed for transport-dependent aspects of overall renal function. Workshop topics included solute fluxes through ion channels, cotransporters, and metabolically-driven ion pumps; transport across fiber-matrix and capillary membranes; coordinated transport by renal epithelia; the urine concetrating mechanism; and intra-renal hemodynamic control. This volume will be of interest to biological and mathematical scientists who would like a view of recent mathematical efforts to represent membrane transport and its role in renal function.

Description:
Brush border membrane vesicles (BBMVs) were prepared from the kidneys of rainbow trout exposed acutely (72 h; 13,380 @mg Ni L^-^1), chronically (11 months; 289 @mg Ni L^-^1), or chronically and acutely, to waterborne nickel (Ni). Uptake of ^6^3Ni into renal BBMVs was temperature-dependent and fitted a two component kinetic model composed of a saturable, Michaelis-Menten component prominent at lower Ni concentrations, and a moderate linear diffusive component apparent at higher Ni concentrations. Chronic Ni exposure reduced the permeability of the BBM to Ni, evidenced by a significantly reduced slope of the linear diffusive component of BBMV uptake. Efflux of Ni from ^6^3Ni-loaded renal BBMVs was not significantly altered by acute Ni challenge. Both Ca^2^+ and Mg^2^+ inhibited uptake of Ni into renal BBMVs when present at a molar ratio to Ni of 1000:1. Mg^2^+-induced inhibition, however, was concentration-dependent and significant in BBMVs prepared from chronically Ni-acclimated fish at far lower molar ratios of 100 and 10 to 1. The data suggest that subtle, long-term modulation of membrane structure and function in the rainbow trout may be a compensatory response to chronic waterborne Ni exposure. Additionally, the data challenge the assumptions of constancy of the physiological parameters underlying physiologically based approaches to modeling metal toxicity. Such approaches are currently employed to derive water quality criteria for some metals.

Book Description
In Education of a Felon, the reigning champion of prison novelists finally tells his own story. The son of an alcoholic stagehand father and a Busby Berkeley chorus girl, Bunker was--at seventeen--the youngest inmate ever in San Quentin. His hard-won experiences on L.A.'s meanest streets and in and out of prison gave him the material to write some of the grittiest and most affecting novels of our time. From smoking a joint in the gas chamber to leaving fingerprints on a knife connected to a serial kiler, from Hollywood's steamy undersde to swimming in the Neptune pool at San Simeon, Bunker delivers a memoir as colorful as any of his novels and as compelling as the life he's lead.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent and thought-provoking book.......2007-09-13
This is an incredible true story, about second (and third and even fourth) chances, and prove that it's never too late for someone to change their life. Today, there are thousands of kids just like Edward Bunker, and there are fewer ways for them to find a second chance, a way out of a life of crime.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who works in the criminal justice system, especially with juveniles.
Great, Have a tissue handy.......2007-09-09
The Education of a Felon by Edward Bunker is very touching. We sent a copy to
our grandson in prison for getting into fights in bars every time he is released from prison. He was so taken with the material that he now attends AAA and has started going to Church. He also let several other inmates read it and they too are working on changing their ways.
Sincerely,
Ol'wdb7777
street and book smart.......2007-08-14
Bunker puts you right into the prison life in this book. Although at times it seems a little rushed if not abrupt, this is a good page-turner and not too much is left to the imagination. It's a good memoir that at times can make you feel as nervous, angry or happy as the author felt.
great autobiography........2007-02-12
unlike the psychopathic rantings that fill jack henry abbott's "in the belly of the beast," this book about the life of a man who rose from a life of crime to the life of a successful writer is without self-pity, without self-justification. and, also unlike "in the belly of the beast," it is great writing with a great narrative drive. a story is built out of mr bunker's life, in clear direct prose, free of psychiatric babble. this is a fantastic book that deserves a wide readership. so go ahead and read the thing.
Education of a Felon.......2006-08-12
What justice James Frey (A Million Little Pieces) did for a drug addiction and rehabilation experience, Edward Bunker exceeds with his memoir of life in jail and as a criminal but with undulated truthfulness. His prose and descriptive talents make the reader wonder how Bunker could have maintained such a delicate artfulness through years of violence and rebellion. His diction and clear interesting reproductive detailing of events, as far back as early childhood and up to the heinous race wars within San Quentin penitentiary of his late teen years, manifest and validate his true genius and talent as a brilliant writer. Bunker pushes the reader so close to the experience of jail and on the streets of Hollywood, that one almost wishes to spend a day inside the brutal prison walls, or with the heroin crazed call girls, pimps, thieves and drugs dealers of the late night. As horribly frightening and intense as the scenes are, unspeakable situations of misfortune and crime, Edwark Bunker will have you dreaming to see it, and do it all yourself.

Proofread!!!!.......2006-10-27
I paid nearly 80 bucks for these 2 volumes and found that the book is riddled with errors that should have been caught before this was published. Missing letters, wrong numbers, sentences that make no sense at all, and all for a steep price. The 69th deserves something better than this.

Product Description
Publication to accompany the Oct. 5 - Nov. 18, 2001 exhibition. 48 pages. With 5-page essay titled 'Allegories and Myths'. Includes checklist of the exhibition and listing of Selected Literature. ABOUT THE ARTIST: Since the early 1970s, Audrey Ushenko has employed allegory and myth in her figure paintings in order to explore broad questions concerning the nature of knowledge, faith, belief, and mortality. Ushenko creates highly stylized, dramatic, and serial tableaux in which the artist's persona is a constant presence. Ushenko's mythological and allegorical "dramas" are typically staged in contemporary, often suburban, settings. The protagonists include for the most part herself, friends, and colleagues, who retain their individual characteristics but represent universal signifiers. Typically they are members of the academic or professional meritocracy, whom Ushenko treats with both compassion and irony.
Ushenko has found a unique yet labor-intensive way to render gesture and expression in a most realistic manner, sometimes taking several months to complete a single piece. Her color choices are from a naturalists pallet, rich and earthy, yet she does well with glass and the icy glaze of winter light as well.
Book Description
Ecologists Vandermeer and Perfecto look beyond simplistic explanations to show exactly why biodiversity is in such jeopardy around the world and what steps must be taken to slow the ravaging of rain forests.
Customer Reviews:
Sobering but empowering analysis.......2007-06-10
"Breakfast of Biodiversity" by John Vandermeer and Ivette Perfecto is a critical analysis of the myriad forces that are driving the destruction of the world's tropical rain forests, with particular emphasis on Central America where the authors have been engaged for many years of hands-on research and field work. The authors write in this, the 2005 second edition about the important insights and lessons that have been learned since the book's first edition published in 1995. Presenting knowledge gained through both scholarly research and their own practical experiences, the authors help us understand that narrowly-focused solutions to solving environmental problems will inevitably come up wanting in the absence of wider, more meaningful socio-political changes. The result is a sobering but ultimately empowering text that allows us to better understand both the challenge and the promise of saving the earth's remaining rain forests.
The authors explain how rain forests are neither fragile nor stable, discussing how rain forests can recover relatively quickly from short-term disruptions such as clear-cut logging operations but can suffer long-lasting damage from industrial agriculture and, of course, urbanization. We come to appreciate the wide variety of rain forest types as well as their common characteristics, shedding light on how humans might be able to make better strategic use of the land and live in harmony with the rain forest.
The idea that managing land under cultivation in a sustainable and socially equitable manner appears to be a surprisingly effective proposal when compared with the oftentimes ineffective method of land conservation that has often been favored by mainstream environmental groups. In fact, the authors compare the fate of rain forest lands over time to make their point: in Nicaragua, more rain forest had been saved as a result of the progressive land redistribution policies of the Sandinista government that in Costa Rica, where market forces have compelled the poor to convert so-called protected areas of the rain forest to farmland. Unfortunately, when the Sandinistas lost power in the 1990s, the neoliberal policies favored by the succeeding administration quickly unraveled these gains and resulted once again in an accelerated loss of rain forest lands.
However, the authors are hopeful that the anti-globalization movement can help to unravel the dense web that connects international capital with third world indebtedness, arguing that if inequality can be minimized then the poverty that drives desperate people into the rain forest can be curtailed. Therefore, the authors hope that their book will compel environmentalists to unite with social and political activists in an united effort to call for meaningful change in the world economic system. While this may be a tall order, the penetrating analysis contained in this exceptional book suggests that such a strategy is the only credible solution to solving one of humankind's most formidable problems.
I highly recommend this accessible, informative and enlightening book to everyone.
Breakfast of biodiversity+ lunch and dinner too!.......2005-08-15
A slim volume that pack a punch. It highlights the global nature of the problem, stressing that rainforests can and indeed do regenerate, but not if the disturbance is too great.
Food insecurity and lack of land tenure are cited as important driving forces, and conventional, purist models of conservation, while satisfying the hopes and desires of lobbies in the wealthy developed world, fail to address the human dilammas that are so important.
A 'Political Ecological Strategy' if offered as a solution that takes heed of all the strands of the 'web of destruction' both in a local and a global context, and although not suggesting that the future is 'rosy', it does offer a glimmer of hope.
A book to be thoroughly recommended to all those who are interested in the future of the rainforest, its people and the planet. An excellent read.
thought-provoking.......2004-02-17
Wonderfully researched, if sometimes dryly written. If you like this book, then you'll likely find something interesting in the coffee-table book, Costa Rica: The Last Country the Gods Made.
The essays, " New Conservation in the Costa Rican Parks System" and "House Made of Rain" touch on many of the things discussed in Vandermeer's text.
Great explanation of political ecology.......2000-12-26
As a professional in the environmental area in Central America, I applaud Vandermeer and Perfecto's explanations of the workings of man in the humid tropical forests of our region. These are not easy issues, yet they manage to leave the reader with a sense of the urgency without oversimplifying or becoming preachy. This book is best for someone who is really interested in the political ramifications of US policy in the tropics, or for someone interested in working in the environment overseas.
Great examination of rain forest destruction.......2000-07-27
I was drawn to this book because of the foreword by Vandana Shiva. I kept reading it. It does a good job of looking at several of the different variables causing rain forest destruction and keys in on land and food as major factors. Clear and easily read. Not to long or overly verbose.
