Book Description
The dynamics of many nonlinear systems gravitate around a few common central themes: intermittency, order/coherence and disorder. Intermittency may be the universal outcome of a large class of nonlinear systems; however, the universality properties of specific nonlinear systems remain open questions. This volume consists of articles by leading figures who all participated in a workshop held at the Newton Institute in Cambridge.

Book Description
The restaurants of the Latin Quarter and the city rooms of midtown Manhattan; the beachhead of Normandy and the boxing gyms of Times Square; the trackside haunts of bookmakers and the shadowy redoubts of Southern politicians--these are the places that A.J. Liebling shows to us in his unforgettable New Yorker articles, brought together here so that a new generation of readers might discover Liebling as if for the first time.
Born a hundred years ago, Abbott Joseph "Joe" Liebling was the first of the great New Yorker writers, a colorful and tireless figure who helped set the magazine's urbane style. Today, he is best known as a celebrant of the "sweet science" of boxing or as a "feeder" who ravishes the reader with his descriptions of food and wine. But as David Remnick, a Liebling devotee, suggests in his fond and insightful introduction, Liebling was a writer bounded only by his intelligence, taste, and ardor for life. Like his nemesis William Randolph Hearst, he changed the rules of modern journalism, banishing the distinctions between reporting and storytelling, between news and art. Whatever his role, Liebling is a most companionable figure, and to read the pieces in this grand and generous book is to be swept along on a thrilling adventure in a world of confidence men, rogues, press barons and political cronies, with an inimitable writer as one's guide.
Customer Reviews:
Just Perfect.......2005-02-03
I read the review in the New York Review of Books and bought the book. I'm not disappointed. A. J. Liebling was just a wonderful writer!
An awesome writer.......2005-01-18
A.J. Liebling is a quirky, funny, one-of-a-kind writer whom I adore. He's often mentioned in the same breath with Damon Runyon, and they both profile similar obscure wise guys in a clever offhanded idiom. (Runyon's prose is more caustic, and practically a new language.) But I found myself thinking of Mark Twain, too, and even the television program Seinfeld. Liebling will come up with something absolutely hilarious or some wonderfully turned phrase in the midst of a lot of pleasant-enough "nothing." He has the same way of deflating the grand and inflating the trivial that Jerry, Elaine, Kramer, and George have.
But even I couldn't finish one of these essays, and he's not going to be everybody's cup of tea. I almost bailed on the initial outpouring on the subject of food, but I'm glad I persevered. (I had recently read The Sweet Science and knew this would get better!) He does an extended riff on the idea that to really enjoy food one must have "just enough" money. With too much or too little money you won't be properly adventurous. Nice image, and unless I'm mistaken it applies to just about everything in life.
There is a great range of topics Liebling writes about. Food is one, and be forewarned that his approach is artistic rather than scientific. But also Paris, World War II, boxing, New York, the press, William Randolph Hearst, General Patton, Theodore Dreiser, Sugar Ray Robinson, Stalin, the Louisiana politician Earl Long. My favorite pieces are "Quest for Mollie," about a remarkable soldier in the North African theater, and "Ahab and Nemesis," about Rocky Marciano and Archie Moore.
These stories and many others are simply transcendant, they are so good. Excerpting him is like excerpting a couple of bars of a Brandenburg Concerto, but I'll run the risk. After he decides that Marciano and Moore match up fairly well with the greats of the past, he ends this particular story with a wonderful, lucid image: "...it proved that world isn't going backward, if you can just stay young enough to remember what it was really like when you were really young."
How can there ever be enough Liebling.......2004-10-16
Is there ever enough Liebling? One of the classic observers of American life. If you have never read him, be prepared for a realy good time. A. J. Liebling was basically a reporter with a sense of observation that can only be called vibrant.
This book is a collection of some of his better work. About a third of the book covers World War II where he becan in France in 1939 and continued through a visit made after the war. This is reporting from the field, not to say anything about this unit doing this and that unit doing that, but about people. People not so different than you and I or out soldiers in Iraq.

The epic scope of historian David Nasaw's biography matches the titanic personality and achievements of William Randolph Hearst (1862-1951), who built "the nation's first media conglomerate" from a single San Francisco newspaper. Based on previously unavailable sources, including Hearst's personal papers, Nasaw's long but absorbing narrative gives a full-bodied account of the often contradictory mogul: "a huge man with a tiny voice; a shy man who was most comfortable in crowds ... an autocratic boss who could not fire people; a devoted husband who lived with his mistress." Wife Millicent Hearst and actress-inamorata Marion Davies also emerge with more complexity than in previous portraits like Orson Welles's Citizen Kane, whose factual inaccuracies Nasaw dissects. The author tempers the usual simplistic account of Hearst's political evolution from fire-breathing leftist to red-baiting conservative, calling him "a classic liberal" who believed in less-is-more government and deplored fascism as much as communism. Fresh insights and elegantly turned phrases abound in Nasaw's depiction of Hearst's activities as newspaper publisher, movie producer, and politician, but what's even more intriguing is the poignant personal drama of a man born "in the city of great expectations on the edge of the continent" who was buried 89 years later in San Francisco, "the place he used to know." --Wendy Smith
Book Description
Named one of the best books of the year by the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Washington Post, Business Week, and GQ, THE CHIEF: THE LIFE OF WILLIAM RANDLOPH HEARST is "an absorbing and ingeniously organized biography . . . of the most powerful publisher America has ever known" (New York Times Book Review). Drawing on papers and interviews that were previously unavailable, as well as on newly released documentation of interactions with such figures as Hitler, Mussolini, Churchill, every president from Grover Cleveland to Franklin Roosevelt, and movie giants Louis B. Mayer, Jack Warner, and Irving Thalberg, David Nasaw completes the picture of this colossal American "engagingly, lucidly and fair-mindedly" (Arthur Schlesinger, Jr.). "Outstandingly researched, elegantly but not flamboyantly written, and fair in its conclusions about Hearst's astonishing career" (Wall Street Journal), THE CHIEF "must be regarded as the definitive study . . . It's hard to imagine a more complete rendering of Hearst's life" (Business Week).
Customer Reviews:
A Fascinating Figure.......2007-02-11
An excellent, well-written book chronicling the life and times of an individual who may well belong in the first-tier, and certainly at least in the second-tier, of the most influential Americans of the twentieth century. The writing is lively, vivid and engaging. The times in which he lived are carefully woven into the story Mr. Hearst's evolution of thought and action over his life, demonstrating what an inconsistent, cipher of a man he really was. Much attention is paid to the many different characters surrounding "The Chief", which only adds to the overall high-quality of the book. A must read before visiting San Simeon.
lots of detail.......2006-07-24
This book is much more than I thought it would be. I'm really enjoying all the detail and learning so much. Life was so different back then and it's fascinating to be "transported" back to another time and another class.
Great Reading! ! !.......2006-02-01
I loved this book. I find Hearst fascinating. Imagine being such an important, rich and busy man--and he just loved playing solitaire and buying beautiful furnishings and accessories for his great ranch. I think he contributed a lot to society and I really enjoyed reading most of it. The political and parts where he got involved with the war, etc., I kind of either read over or skipped past as those parts of books come to an easy conclusion without having to read all the gory details. I wanted to read about the substance of what made a guy like this tick. I think I got a good idea of him through Nasaw's book.
A Remarkable Man, A Remarkable Life!.......2006-01-19
William Randolph Hearst was loved and hated by millions. He became one of the richest and most powerful men in the world. He ran for President, created one of the grandest homes ever built, and lived one of the most complex, fascinating lives of the 20th century. Loving and devoted to his wife, Millicent, and their five children on the East Coast, he lived openly with his mistress, Marion Davies, on the West Coast. An avid supporter of unions and the "common man," he was one of the most ruthless "barons" and fought unions, communism and Franklin Roosevelt ferociously. He was the first to "vertically integrate" his businesses, leveraging the same material in newspapers, magazines, newsreels and movies. What a life!
If they know anything about Hearst at all, most people think they know him from Orson Welles' movie, "Citizen Kane." While "Kane" is, without doubt, one of the very best films ever made (if you haven't seen it, by all means rent the DVD! It's fantastic!) it is unfortunately a terribly shallow and vindictive caricature of the real man. Welles was associated with political movements that had labeled Hearst "public enemy number one" in the 1930's, and the film reflects his point of view.
While Hearst was selfish and ego-manical, his rampant collecting also saved vast warehouses of art and antiques from destruction, creating his "Enchanted Hill" in San Simeon, California. In 1959, when his estate gave the property to California as a park, it was valued at $55 million, and it is by far the most extraordinary personal residence ever built in the United States. If you haven't seen in, put it on your life-list of things to see!
But why read the book? Here's my short list of essential reasons: (1) He was a man of courage. It's easy to disagree, or even have contempt for, many of his opinions and actions but he stood by them. (2) He was a visionary and many of the positions he advocated were ahead of his time. Our world today looks remarkably similar to what he predicted, and we can learn from that. (3) He was extraordinarily resilient. When his personal foibles combined with the depression to drive him nearly bankrupt in the late 1930's, he fought back. He never gave up.
Nasaw does a remarkable job of telling a complex story and I found the book highly readable. This is great history and an inspiring story. To understand the 20th century, and to be personally inspired, read this book. You'll be richer for it.
Fascinating and Compelling Read.......2005-11-27
While a number of the other reviewers discuss the merits or the actions of William Randolph Hearst, my comments are directed more at the book itself. I found this book by accident while browsing my favorite bookstore. This book by Nasaw seemed to jump out at me. I was not aware of the book prior to this time, but Hearst is an almost a mythical figure in American pop culture and business history so I was eager to learn about the man and bought this inexpensive paperback version.
As a book it is an engrossing read. It transports the reader effortlessly back to the late 1800's where we follow the volatile and fluctuating fortunes of his father George, a self made mining speculator from Missouri, and his mother, many years younger than George. We learn of her spending, meddling in Williams personal life, her many houses, and her European travels. We follow the education of William Hearst at Harvard, his expulsion for missing exams, and then his successes and climb to fame in the newspaper business. I found the story to be compelling at first but then to slow somewhat after page 200 or so - it is almost 600 pages long - because his story is complicated and the book is filled with details.
His first job after flunking out of Harvard is to run the San Francisco Examiner, owned by his (by now very rich) father. That is correct! He went from second or third year at Harvard to CEO of the Examiner in one step after some holidays and writing. We learn about the economics of a two penny paper and hear about the exploits of Pulitzer and others. His father was part owner a number of famous mines including the Anaconda copper mine and he had money to fund the Examiner running the paper at a loss as a hobby and as a mechanism to stay involved in California politics.
William took it over after leaving Harvard - still in his early to mid twenties. It reminds me a bit of Donald Trump and his launch by his father Fred into Manhattan real estate. But after this running start with his father's deep pockets, William seems to find an inner drive that propels him almost in competition with his father.
William had a deep well of youthful restless energy, and is able to focus it on turning around the Examiner into a profitable business. He continues to expand on his own after his father's death, but his next successful paper in New York was funded largely from the estate run by his mother. The estate continues to fund him or subsidize his business, political ambitions, and lifestyle for the next ten years or more.
But with his high energy, he develops or borrows production and marketing techniques, hires good writers, sells lots of papers, expands again to Chicago and beyond, and gets involved in related ventures on and on. Along the way he is of course is distracted by the spending of the money, politics, runs for office in the US Congress, New York city as mayor, governor of New York State, President, etc. All his campaigns except Congress fail. But his business success is real and encompasses movies, news, papers, and magazines. We learn of his other distractions and other people, especially women.
It is all very fascinating tale, and made even better by three excellent sets of black and white photographs of the Hearst family, and William's famous properties, and the girl frie

Book Description
As National Public Radio's much loved and respected senior foreign correspondent Anne Garrels has covered conflicts in Chechnya, Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan, and Iraq. In Naked in Baghdad she reveals how as one of only sixteen non-embedded journalists who stayed in the now legendary Palestine Hotel throughout the American invasion she managed to deliver the most immediate, insightful and independent reports with unparalleled vividness and immediacy. Her evolving relationship with her Iraqi driver/minder Amer, and the wonderful e-mail bulletins sent to friends by her husband, Vint Lawrence, counterpoint the daily events of her life in Baghdad, and result in a deeply moving, and intimate portrait by one of bravest and most enlightening news reporters.

The only way this book could be enhanced..........2006-02-23
The only way this book could be enhanced is to have a CD of her broadcasts for NPR. Unfortunately I live in a part of the country where NPR broadcasts are hard to get and it could have made it even better. Unfortunately because I didn't get to hear the broadcasts I could only guess at their content from what the book mentioned. She writes well and seems to find the "hidden stories". Her husband's e-mails are a great voice from the other side of the correspondents life. Itr only adds to the pleasure that he is also a great writer. He had me laughing at some points I certainly hadn't expected to laugh. Overall though the book is great and highly recommended, however I'm sure it's even better if you've heard her NPR reports.
True Journalisam.......2006-01-24
Enough good words have been said about the book. But ultimately, this book is not about the war. That's why readers who expected to get detailed war stories will be disappointed.
It's about true journalism. Annie showed us the grace under fire, the courage to pursuit the truth, the genuine care for the people she reported on, and above all, the dedication to give a voice to the people who couldn't speak for themselves.
Amazing chance to learn the story behind that voice on the radio.......2005-08-30
As a listener to NPR, I feel so much closer to Garrels after learning the backstory behind her reports from the trenches of Iraq. She has extreme skill and intuition at conducting herself in a foreign country, at making people willing to talk, at befriending the right people.
I learned a lot about how much the Iraqi government practiced supression in the old regime. People were terrified for their lives if they talked to foreign reporters, and Garrels had to pay many bribes to get press credentials. When leaving Iraq, corrupt officials invent tests and fees for Garrels and her assistant to pay. Her stories humanized the Iraqi conflict for me--I met both crooks and good guys through Garrels.
Garrels has a great storytelling style. She'll tell an anecdote and then end with a biting one line zinger. She's as taltened on paper as she is on the air, and I'll be watching for more from this amazing woman.
Another view!.......2005-06-21
Learning Iraq from her is totally different than Television. This is another perspective to war. It is possible to find Iraqi individuals feelings about all situation. Book gives you Iraq before the war, during the war, and after the war. This historical event is explained very well. Book name comes from her naked reporting. Because, she was hiding her satellite phone from Iraqi officers. During the broadcast she reports naked and if officer comes she will say them she is naked and gets extra time for hiding the phone before open the door. Also she slips away from AIDS test due to her age.
This is another must read book for Iraq war.
Annie lays her soul bare in Baghdad.......2005-05-30
I used to hear NPR's anchors say "Thanks, Annie," as they said goodby to each other at the end of even the shortest of broadcasts from Baghdad. After reading this book, I know why. Even the use of her nickname on the air was a way of telling her they cared about her safety, and to take care of herself. And, with the help of Amer, she did, the best she could. This book didn't give sweeping overviews of how the buildup to the war, and then the war itself, went. The Iraqi government was managing the reporters too much for that. But she got away from her minder as much as she could and learned as much as she could, and let the American people know as much as she could. Here, in this book, is the back story of what could not safely be said on the air. It is full of telling details of people she met, their hopes and fears, the things they said and did not say, especially how those changed depending on whether a government official was within hearing distance. She also tells what it was like to be one of only a few reporters left, with few supplies, no electricity, and constant harrassment and demands for bribes. I knew she was a great reporter, and had reported on other wars. This book made me see exactly why she is a great reporter. She is tenacious and courageous and knows what stories to go after. She is willing to use the fact that she is a woman, both with women and men, and the fact that she is no longer young, to get interviews with all kinds of people. She trusts her gut. And when it's time to get out, she gets out. This book taught me more about the war in Iraq than anything else I've read. I just recommended it to a friend who has two sons serving there. I recommend it to others who want to see, not the broad military sweep, but what the buildup and beginning of the war were like for the people.

Book Description
Human beings may be the dominant form of life on Earth today, but our health, well-being, and, indeed, survival are dependent on the health and integrity of the environment in which we live. Anne Nadakavukaren explores and clarifies this web of interdependency and interrelationships with uncommon insight into the functioning of the natural environment and the impact of human activities. She provides a comprehensive, up-to-date survey of the major environmental issues facing the world today within a dual framework of ecological concerns combined with specific issues of personal and community health. With the same clear, compelling writing that has made this text a perennial favorite among students and faculty alike, the author imparts to readers a sense of how today's environmental issues affect their own lives. Moreover, Our Global Environment provides the understanding they need to participate in the decision-making processes that will influence health and environmental quality in the decades ahead. The Sixth Edition has been extensively updated and incorporates new issues of concern, including nuclear terrorism, genetically modified crop plants, mad cow disease, the obesity epidemic, and many others. Moreover, the text reviews the latest developments in international efforts to negotiate binding treaties on issues of global concern, such as climate change, ozone-layer depletion, and tobacco use, and incorporates numerous examples of environmental problems and solutions from other nations. Abundant photos and illustrations illuminate the discussion and also help clarify information and identify trends. The text contains 72 boxed features within chapters that highlight relevant, current, and illustrative issues and examples. These include: Tourism: Environmental Boon or Bane?, Seeking Greener Pastures: International Migration, The "Urban Penalty," Population Pressures Spur Mideast Tension, The Perils of Pregnancy, Supersized America: The Other Face of Malnutrition, Eco-Certification of Coffee, Slaughter in the Jungle, International Initiative to Fight Tobacco, Deadly Dust, The Dark Side of Beautiful Blossoms, International Initiative to Fight Tobacco, Beware of Mad Cows, "Loose Nukes" and "Dirty Bombs," Brown Cloud Over Asia, Watch Where You Swim: Recreational Water Illnesses May Be Lurking, and Plants vs. Pollution.

Interesting reading~.......2007-01-12
This book is for my environment health class, however, I didn't really use this book as often as I expected. Some of the readings are pretty interesting but at the time, it conclude a lot of information.
The Environment and a Bit More..........2006-07-04
This book was a required text for one of my courses. In the past I have not had the best experiences with texts that offer such broad overviews of topics, and as result, I was not looking forward to reading this book. However, I have found the book extremely well written with an abundance of references for additional reading and further research. Every chapter has inserts of up to date events that outline both the environmental and health effects of pollution on world populations. For example the chapter on "Water Pollution" (Ch. 15) at the same time that it identifies the many sources of water pollution it also provides the reader examples of water pollution on health; such as, describing in detail the how and why schistosomiasis infection rates have remained constant for the past 50 years affecting 250 million people globally. If you are interested on a well written introductory book on the environment and health, this is certainly a book to keep in mind.
Engaging read on environmental issues.......2006-03-20
This is a very well organized book that covers the major environmental issues facing our world complete with case study examples to illustrate the points.
Excellent book.......2005-02-16
Broad coverage of important topics in environmental health. Most important of all, it is very easy to read and grasp the points that the author is trying to make. It is comparatively much more readible than many other titles in the subject.
Good Reading.......2003-03-10
The book is well written with many important topics.
